She is a year out of HS with about 20 hours of general BS like history, English etc.. but in HS she did AP calculus, physics and chemistry, so I'm pretty sure she has the background to build on. Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.  Whatever time zone youÂ’re in, have a cup of coffee, tea or an adult beverage and spend a moment with me, will you?  Except you, Vic – just rest those weary bones for a while.

 

 

By 1948, Hollywood found itself in trouble.  It wasnÂ’t just that the war – which provided the studios with audiences hungry for escape – was over; there were also the twin body blows of the government and progress.  “Government,” in this case, was an antitrust decision that forcibly parted the studios from their theaters.  Now there was no longer an assured market for MGM, Universal or Fox product, and one by one the lavish movie palaces of the ‘20s and ‘30s closed.

 

 

“Progress” was television.  Introduced in a small way in 1948, by 1950 over 7.5 million sets were sold in the United States.  The moguls insisted that TV was a passing fad, but knew they had to compete somehow.  So began the decade of gimmicks – 3D, Smell-O-Vision, CinemaScope, Cinerama, Todd-AO and VistaVision, all designed to give the television audience experiences and spectacles their tiny little black-and-white boxes couldnÂ’t provide.

 

 

But “television” was always a dirty word in Hollywood. 

 

 

For instance, no Warner Brothers film showed a television set in a house; even to mention the word could bring down the wrath of Jack Warner.  When songwriters Sammy Fain and Paul Webster (Calamity Jane, The Incredible Mr. Limpet) were working on an assignment, they asked scriptwriter Mel Shavelson (Beau James, Yours, Mine and Ours* to give a listen to one of their tunes.  TheyÂ’d barely begun to play when Shavelson interrupted: “ItÂ’ll never be in the picture.”  “What do you mean?” the songwriters asked.  “That was only the first eight bars!”  Shavelson repeated, “ItÂ’ll never be in the picture.”  Fain and Webster each reached for their wallets and bet that it would. 

 

 

The next day, after the two had played the song for Jack Warner, they ran into Shavelson and paid off the bet.  “How did you know?” they asked.  Shavelson told them it was obvious – the first line of the chorus was “IÂ’m in love with the girl from Channel Nine.”

It has been a long long time since I went through Navy Nuke.  But I can tell you it is tough.  The desk school is the last two years of high intensity college physics/math type courses crammed into 6 months.

Then you get 6 months of OJT at a prototype, 12 hour days 7/week with a couple of days off between.

Then you go to fleet and spend lots o' days at work.

Tell her she would be better off going to a two year tech school and the getting a job as an auxiliary operator/Plant equipment operator at a Nuke Plant in the  civilian world.

If she wants to do that I may be able to help.  Big may the way they do hiring now.

Speaking of LZ..

A couple weeks ago the wife and I saw the band Heart who is touring with the Jason Bonham Led Zeppelin Experience.  Jason is the son of LZ's original drummer, John Bonhan.

Anyhoo.. Jason Bonham does the whole first set with a really good band and a really good singer doing all LZ songs.

Then Heart did a fantastic set.. then both bands get back together and they do more Zep tunes, with Ann Wilson wailing on Stairway as the finale.

It was a fantastic show.  If you get a chance to see them, do it.

Prepare for 2 years of schooling and to get radiated. Supposedly once they start working they are only supposed to get so many rads or spend so many hours a week in a radiated area. It's somehow becomes a parenting zip-line. Hubby and I are in St. Augustine celebrating our 30th anniversary and catching up with old friends. My review is from "Not the Donald."  Starts out with the word "WOW."  Certainly strongly recommend this awesome book (Amy Lynn) to the horde, particular since the horde gets a mention and a few hat tips to our feelings about what is going on in our country now.

Last year he got 2 concussions and missed the end of the season,  and this spring he got a knee injury in league play which necessitated surgery.  He did his best to get in shape,  but the short summer meant that his speed and strength was not full-up before school started in JULY (spit) so,  no team this fall.

Recommend he continue his workouts on his own.  When he is back up to full speed have him let the coach know he's ready and available if the team needs him.  At the very worst  he stays in shape and there is always the possibility someone will get hurt or quit the team and the coach will need a replacement.  Just a thought.

Newt is plenty smooth.  I love watching him stick the knife in twenty times in one well crafted sentence and doing it so sweetly, smoothly, and succinctly that the reporter looks like a pole axed steer.  I love it when their shoulders slump and they look down at their laps to gather their thoughts and they get that surprised look on their face when they don't find their gently steaming intestines spooling onto the floor.  Then they look up to find Newt politely waiting for their next move.

181 I'm ok with the RNC pulling out of the network primary debates. With technology today it's possible to produce and run the debates themselves stream them over the internet and then allow the networks to air coverage of them on a tape delay. This would certainly deal with the moderator problem and it's not denying the public access to the debates, they'd be online and would be available to the networks but Republicans would have more control over the situation. I'm not saying that the RNC is capable of producing something of similar quality to the network debates, just that it's possible.
