Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.  Yesterday, as you recall, we were talking about the power of the Kennedy name and the transforming effect that “stardom” – of whatever kind – has upon people.  HereÂ’s a story that illustrates that:

 

 

In the early 1950s, the director Henry Koster and his wife Peggy invited a young Dutch girl to live with them for a while.  The girl was a student at Beverly Hills High School, but she was a shy, gloomy child and the Kosters grew concerned about her social development.  “Did you sit with anybody for lunch?” theyÂ’d ask.  The girl always said no.  The Kosters saw that the girl was afraid to talk to other people (no doubt feeling very apart from the gleaming-toothed, sun-bronzed children of privilege at the school), and when she broke her leg, they suspected that sheÂ’d done it on purpose to avoid the pain of school.

 

 

It happened to be 1954, and Koster was directing Desiree, starring Marlon Brando.  One evening, Deanna Durbin – who had left the movies and relocated to France – happened to be in town and came to visit.  When Brando heard, he said, “IÂ’d love to meet her,” and asked if he could drop by.  Of course, he was told.

 

 

Peggy Koster told the Dutch girl that Deanna Durbin would be visiting that night.  DurbinÂ’s pictures had been huge European successes after the war, and the girl asked, “Could I meet her?”  So after Durbin and Brando arrived, Peggy asked Durbin, “Would you go upstairs and say hello to this little Dutch girl whoÂ’s living with us?  She wants to meet you and sheÂ’s a fan of yours.”  Durbin agreed, and Brando accompanied her.  Together they went up and talked to the girl, and both signed her cast.

 

 

The next morning, the girl was thrilled at having met Durbin, but asked, “Who was that man?”  “You donÂ’t know who Marlon Brando is?” asked Peggy.  When the girl shook her head, she was told, “Well, when you go back to school you tell your classmates that Marlon Brando came up to your bedroom and he signed your cast.  Now donÂ’t forget.”

 

 

As you might expect, once she returned to school, this little Dutch girl became extremely popular.  She made many friends and the Kosters had teenage girls running in and out of their house at all hours, perhaps hoping to meet Brando.

Here it depends on the accusation.  If you falsely accuse someone of a misdemeanor then the accusation is a misdemeanor.  If the false accusation involves a felony (which Z's was) then the false accusation is a felony.One article I read said that the police were looking at charging her.

Final report from Australia because I leave tomorrow night for Texas.

Tony Abbott will take the PM job sometime next week.  It seems to be fluid when that happens after an election but they don't have two months to pardon every crony like the USof A.  He says they have already drafted legislation to repeal the Carbon Tax.  But.... this needs the approval of the Senate as well, still controlled by the Liberals.  Senate elections are June of next year when the Liberals are expected to become a greasy spot in the highway.  Abbott called on the Senate to abide by the people's decision and pass his legislation but we'll see. 

For those sweltering in Texas and the outlying provinces:  The low last night here in Fremantle was 43 with a high of 59 today.  I

Unfortunately, history has shown that anything new like this has a limited shelf life.  It won't take long before defenses figure it out, and it becomes just another thing.  Last year, it was San Francisco's read option.  It worked well enough but didn't carry them to a Super Bowl win.  In the first game this year, they didn't run it much at all.

I just finished reading Glenn Reynolds' piece saying that Obama is a laughingstock, and must agree with his conclusion: it is not good for the country when a US President, of whatever ideological persuasion, is perceived as an incompetent bungler.

 

Another thing, too: we laugh at Obama's own special mix of narcissism and ineptitude, at the desperate attempts of the MSM to cover it up. Time to stop laughing. The President knows people all over the world are laughing at him and if there's anything he can't stand, it's ridicule and laughter at his expense. He's a very thin-skinned man. Piss him off and, motivated by spite and resentment, he's liable to lash out and do something even more incredibly stupid and destructive to the country.

 

Remember the mad Roman Emperor Caligula? He once told the plebes packed in the Colliseum, 'If you had but one neck, I would strangle it'? Yeah, that. Something to consider.
