When I lived in LA, during the pre and primordial intertube days, long before YouTube and Hulu, there was a video store in the Valley called Eddie Brandt's Saturday Night Film something-or-other. Amazing store. They not only had every film you could imagine but they had VHS copies of hundreds of TV movies of the week. The caveat was that they would loan them to you for free when you rented any regular movie from them at the regular price, and that's how they got around the copyright law. Totally legal, or at least no one ever went after them. And they are in the heart of TV land.

Depends, I am finding that to save money the providers want you to pick it up or send it back (if returning).

But a friend of mine had one of these years ago.  It was prided by the local cable company and would hold 2 or 3 movies depending on how long they were.  But you could output it to a DVD burner (or any kind of recorder).  But you can probably output your cable box straight to a DVD burner.

Working nights, I was asleep the morning of 9/11/01. A friend called me to say that the world was ending and to turn on the t.v. Only one plane had hit at that time. I saw the second hit live and thought "Holy shit!"  At that point we knew it wasn't an accident, that something bigger was going on.

If you had told me - or any of us, I suppose - that in only a few short years, the country would elect, not once, but twice, a man who had been educated by Islamic fundamentalists, who spent formative years being mentored by outright Marxists, who had definitive, provable connections to domestic terrorists and who yet had no paper trail to lay out his background, his travels or even his birth, what would we have said?

A quick and targeted strike would have been popular and would have managed to hold a tenuous collection of doves, hawks and appeasers together (where that strike should have been is another question).  But the lengthy conflict we became engaged in in Iraq - especially when filtered through an increasingly predjudiced media and windsock (when not outright treasonous) politicians - allowed the view of the "it's not our fight, this is just a military-industrial complex orgasm" to gain traction.

 

The election of Obama would have happened.  A middle-eastern sounding candidate was the stopgap solution for an America weary of war, lied to by a complicit media and hounded by an undermining, treasonous Democrat party.  "Here, we love you!  Leave us alone now!"

82 This morning 12 years ago, I was parked at a truckstop off 95 in Maryland. The qualcom started went off and there was a message from my dispatcher warning me and others to stay out of NY. He gave reasons that sounded like a bad joke. I turned on the TV and saw what had happened. First thing I did was fuel up the truck. A few minutes later another message came in saying stay out of DC.  The day had gotten worse. I made it around DC and into VA on my way to SC and that's where I finally was able to get a call through to my wife. They thought I was still headed into NYC.  Lucky for me, that load had been swapped to another driver late in the night.

181 I was doing weapons system checks on F/A-18 aircraft as part of the planned maintenance schedule, release checks are done every week. Although we did not know this at the time, by noon that day they would all be loaded with live weapons.


I went into the shop to get something and they told me about the first hit, and I thought "what a tragedy." I went back in about a half hour later and they told me about the second one. I told them "We're under attack, boys. We're at war." No one wanted to believe me.


The call came in about 5 minutes later to release check all the other aircraft that had not been on the release check schedule for that day, and the ordies followed right behind us with weapons skids. It is the first...and I pray the last...time I have ever seen live weapons loaded on aircraft sitting on the flight line rather than at the hot pad at NAS Oceana. Up and down the flight line, Hornets as far as you could see, all with warshots on the wingtips. The Tomcat side was loaded as well.

By that evening half of our aircraft were onboard USS George Washington (CVN-73) enroute to NYC.


FWIW, the Cole was in our battle group when she was hit. She was fueling up to go through the canal and join up with us in the Med.

182 We took the Ground Zero tour this summer. I really hadn't wanted to go because the whole thing makes me so angry. Our tour guides were a man who had worked in the Engineering section for WTC and lost 85 of his 110 coworkers that day and a woman who was working in one of the buildings adjacent to the twin towers when they were hit. Their stories were amazing. I can't repeat what they told us without crying. The woman told of how everyone tried to assist others that day. People poured out of businesses and residences offering shelter, phones, water or just a place to use the bathroom and to rest. She said "I've lived and worked in New York all my life" and that this was the New York she always new that they could be. The people who planned 9/11 are pieces of s%*t. The Americans who responded and tried to help others however - that's what I hope I never forget. Something like one in every five people who died that day were first responders all trying to save someone else. Hundreds of fireefighters, over sixty cops, building engineers, paramedics all fighting to save life. Another example of "not all cultures are equal" and "not all cultures are equally worthy of respect and preservation." And yes, left wing douchebags - I have taken care to teach my children that.

It used to be almost impossible to get a DVD burner with HDMI or component inputs.  My box won't output the widescreen bit on the S-video out so it's very possible you'll be stuck with a letterbox recording instead of a widescreen recording.  I did find an old panasonic DVD burner on ebay with component in, so I send the 480i input into that and then daisy chain that to a more recent burner so it burns with the widescreen bit. 

3. The 480i recordings look pretty good, the only problem is darker shows look crappy.

199 I was on I44, had just cleared Springfield, MO, we were going to Indiana for my Dad's birthday (13th) and a big surgery he had scheduled (12th). We stopped at a place with a TV and saw the second tower fall. We kept going. Just outside of St. Louis, we heard that every single used cheap car in the city was gone--sold to groups of people banding together to get home after the airport was closed. We kept going. By the time we got to Indiana, gas was $5.00 a gallon. When we got to my folks, my Dad was so sick and in so much pain, I took him to the hospital ER. My Dad was a rock, so when he said the pain was unbearable, I freaked. On the 12th, he was in surgery for 8 hours, so we sat in a hospital waiting room and astched the towers fall again and again. The Dr finally came out said he had removed most of Dad's intestines and gave him 6 months to live. He lasted until July, 2003. I spent a month in NYC as a consultant. My suite at the Hilton overlooked the Towers. I will never forget.

I remember 9-11 completely.  I was watching the local news, later than I normally would have because I had a doctor appointment in the morning.  I was watching the local NBC station and can even remember the anchors of the morning.  At about 5 minutes before 6:00, the local anchor said there was a report of a plane hitting the World Trade Center and he switched to video from New York.  I guess they were bouncing around everywhere - I have no idea whose video it was but it wasn't the GMA stuff linked earlier - because they showed a view from what was, I'm guessing, either across one river in Brooklyn or the other river in New Jersey.  There were two guys talking and one was saying, "It's terrorism."  I said to the TV, "Let's not leap to any conclusions," and maybe a minute later, the second plane hit and I said to no one, "OK, that's terrorism."

 

And now, to my eternal distress, I see more and more women wearing hijab.  To some extent, it's because I live near a large mosque.  (It's the Islamic Center of Seattle, formerly the Idris Mosque, but I guess they changed the name so no one would pay attention to the fact that the place was paid for by Saudis.  Their website used to acknowledge the prince Idris who paid for it.)  Anyway, it's still very disconcerting to see a woman in black, head to toe, not even her eyes showing, trying to sort through some papers with thick red gloves on.  It's very disconcerting to drive by the mosque at noon on Friday and see the men with their pants rolled up over their ankles (Mohammed thought trousers below ankles were vain - go figure).  And it's really disconcerting to see what look like white men with full beards and rolled up trousers because how can a decent American fall for that shit?  (I only mention white men because there are so many African/Arab immigrants at this mosque that I would not be able to tell an American black man from an African immigrant.)  When I see these women in the grocery store, just their faces showing, I always want to treat them as if they were as invisible as they seem to want to be, but I just can't bring myself to be that shitty, even though if this were an Islamic republic, I would be shoved off the sidewalk to walk in the gutters like a good dhimmi.

I was in the office in Fairfax, VA on 9/11, and it was crazy - everyone in my office trying to get ahold of their loved ones in DC (such as spouses in the Secret Service, etc. or in the news biz who had been sent to the f'ing mall to report while the capital was being evacuated). It was chaos just trying to get home to Arlington and make sure friends and loved ones were safe. Then watching the Pentagon burn from my living room (from a high rise). I was digging a hasty and foxhole position when the drill sergeants started going around and letting us know what had happened in NYC. At first, I just thought, "meh, drunk pilot" and continued on with the digging. When the second plane hit, that's when we knew that this was no accident. The hit on the Pentagon was hard to imagine. Since we were out on the woods, we had no way of seeing what had happened. Two days later, we road marched back to garrison and finally saw with our own eyes what the rest of the nation has seen over and over again. I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that I would be going to war. Twelve years after I got out of the Army the first time, going through basic training successfully for the second time in my life, and at the age of 32, I knew. April of 2003, I was headed to Iraq. My mom always said I had shitty timing... I will never, ever forget.

A number of years ago we rescued an Airedale who was the best dog I ever had. Unfortunately Emma had been treated poorly and came as damaged goods. The vet talked me into doing exploratory surgery to try and repair what was wrong; I got a call at work that as soon as they put her under her heart stopped. 228 You drove past the train station.  Usually overnight there were one or two cars, people who stayed in the city for fun or work.  But there were enough cars so that it looked like the weekend amount, people who went in to shop or go to a show or dinner, a lighter scattered amount of cars than the commuting crowd. 

The 9/11 cars in the train station represented those who were never coming home.  Initially we didn't realize that, we thought they'd be rescued, found, saved.  With each passing day we realized that the cars in the train station represented our town's great loss.

229 I was on my way to Natchitoches Louisiana from East Texas. I heard on the radio of the first strike and figured it was some doctor flying his family on a sightseeing trip. When the second hit came I knew what it was and who it was. An Indian friend told me it was the Saudis and Pakistanis. He about nailed it. He said India would be glad to stomp a hole in Pakistan. Mrs. E and I had tickets to Whidbey Island to see a couple of my young pups initiated as Chief Petty Officers on the 16th. We were unable to fly out of DFW of course. When my wife found me later that day crying in the truck she was shocked. Until that point I was just mad. Today I am damn furious. And hell no I won't ever forget.
