— Gabriel Malor Damn. I can't believe it's been so long. I found myself watching this last night. I do still miss him, by the way. Guh.
Elliott Spitzer and Anthony Weiner lost. Awesome. Honestly, I'd given up hope for that crappy town. Oh, and here's a photo of Weiner going out with a bang (SFW, I swear). Okay, I'm still not holding my breath. Whatever. I don't have to live there. ... I live in D.C. ... Crep.
For Colorado recall developments, see our own poll guy.
I've really got nothing else today. Just. Watch the replays. I don't know if they're gonna switch to it this morning, but for the past 11 years, MSNBC (I know, right?) ran their exact fed from that morning. Fox and CNN have moved on to other things. But I've watched MSNBC's 9/11/01 feed for most of these years and you should really switch over and see it if you can. It's unbelievable. Just unbelievable.
If they don't show it this year, watch the first 10 minutes of this video. We didn't know anything when it happened. Nothing. It's actually really hard to watch because they didn't know anything of what was coming when it started. And, of course, we do. I just think people forget. Watch the first 10 minutes. Don't skip, don't move to the parts you know. Just watch 10 minutes. Guh. They knew nothing.

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. No story today, but a question for the Horde:
At stately Poppins Manor, we have one of those receivers which also records shows, so theyÂ’re all on some sort of internal memory. I want to transfer some of the content to DVDs so I can both free up space and have copies of the shows for myself. Mrs. P originally thought she could buy a machine that does that, but now thinks that there isnÂ’t one and that transferring content like that would be illegal. Any thoughts?
And with that, hereÂ’s another picture of the lovely Miss Hepburn in My Fair Lady:
And since “Puttin’ on the Ritz” was mentioned in the last thread, here’s Clark Gable in 1939s Idiot’s Delight singing the original version:

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

So who will it be that is sacrificed, who will pay the price for the public humiliation? John Kerry, Vietnam War Veteran and Internationally Acclaimed Negotiator for World Peace? Some little noticed anonymous administration official with knowledge of the situation who is not authorized to speak to the media but does anyway?
Who? Who gets the shaft?

Depends, I am finding that to save money the providers want you to pick it up or send it back (if returning).
But a friend of mine had one of these years ago. It was prided by the local cable company and would hold 2 or 3 movies depending on how long they were. But you could output it to a DVD burner (or any kind of recorder). But you can probably output your cable box straight to a DVD burner.

Mrs. P is the electronics whiz, so I will run that by her. I'd prefer doing it that way, since I've got a lot of TCM silents that I'd hate to lose and would rather have on DVD anyway, in case the cable box gets fried.

This was the best speech Barack Obama has given in a couple of years.
It was well-structured, right to the point, and direct; it anticipated the skeptical viewer’s questions and tried to answer them, and it did so persuasively. In places, it even did so powerfully, especially toward the end, where he made specific appeals to his “friends” on the right and the left to try to see this conflict in contexts that traditionally mattered to each side—the “commitment to America’s military might” to the right, and “belief in freedom and dignity for all people” to the left.
And the sections of the speech that sought to tug at the heartstrings werenÂ’t overwrought. He did nearly as well as he could have done.

[in the next breath]
"Sometimes resolutions and statements of condemnation are simply not enough,"
So. is this one of those times when diplomacy isn't enough, or is this one of those times when we should give peace a chance? Can't do both at once. So we'll do diplomacy knowing that it might not work, and we'll have to bomb anyway but at least we tried. You want diplomacy? Ok, we'll try that!

And yet, here we are.
If you had told me - or any of us, I suppose - that in only a few short years, the country would elect, not once, but twice, a man who had been educated by Islamic fundamentalists, who spent formative years being mentored by outright Marxists, who had definitive, provable connections to domestic terrorists and who yet had no paper trail to lay out his background, his travels or even his birth, what would we have said?
I submit that, to those with open eyes and ears, the elction of Barack Hussein Obama was predictable. Recall those lonely voices at first - the Susan Sontags refusing to hang out American flags even on 9/12, the Chrissie Hyndes shrieking, "hit us again! We deserve it!" and the reflexive bleat of the left - as illustrated by Deval Patrick's nonsense - wondering why they hated us and what we could do to make amends.
A quick and targeted strike would have been popular and would have managed to hold a tenuous collection of doves, hawks and appeasers together (where that strike should have been is another question). But the lengthy conflict we became engaged in in Iraq - especially when filtered through an increasingly predjudiced media and windsock (when not outright treasonous) politicians - allowed the view of the "it's not our fight, this is just a military-industrial complex orgasm" to gain traction.
The election of Obama would have happened. A middle-eastern sounding candidate was the stopgap solution for an America weary of war, lied to by a complicit media and hounded by an undermining, treasonous Democrat party. "Here, we love you! Leave us alone now!"

"Much remained unclear Tuesday about how — or even whether — chemical weapons inspections would occur."
The news media has already leaped ahead to the destruction of those chemical weapons.
"“If you can get around the legal and logistical questions, securing the stocks might be relatively easy to achieve. But if you add destruction of the munitions, you have to think in terms of years.”
Yet, all we have at the moment is an offhand remark by World Renowned International Peace Negotiator, John Kerry, US Secretary of State, who served in Vietnam, another remark by Russian President Putin that Syria would relinquish 'control' of those weapons and a brilliant speech by US President Barack Obama, but never mind that, the news media is ahead of the game and focused on the real problem; the destruction of very dangerous chemical weapons in the midst of a civil war in Syria.

I had two letters and three numbers. Twenty years ago, we were assaulted by the 10-digit dialing squad, who claimed that we were out of phone numbers in the area code. Now, I only took a couple of math courses, but it's easy to see that seven digits yield 10 million possible combinations, give or take, and there are only half a million persons in the service area. But they would not be argued with.
Ten years later, they admitted they were wrong and "apologized." This did not result in any refunds, demotions, or reductions in the number of digits, but, hey. And so, onward into the future.

Our own fire department is still holding a 9/11 service.
Have to agree totally with MP4. We should have known what Choom Boy was all about from his own public reaction on 9/11. His plea for "understanding" the Muzzie terrorists should have been enough (and, I think, would have been enough if not for Dubya's "hey, Muslims are Good People" remarks and tepid response to the attacks and the increasing radicalization of the leftist goons) to doom him to obscurity.
Instead, we have a Muzzie president and are aiding (militarily and financially) and abetting the people whose brothers killed 3000 Americans on that day.
Angry? ME? You're friggin'-A right I am. Angry at the "religion of peace," angry with Congress and Dubya, and angry with those stupid Americans who have delivered our nation to the Muzzie terrorists.
It is, perhaps, a Good Thing that I am not in a position of power. A lot of Americans (and alleged Americans) would be in prison, and much of the Middle East would be uninhabitable for the foreseeable future.

Here on the MA coast, the neighboring town of Gloucester decided -- at least the fire chief and mayor decided -- to ignore the 9/11 anniversary. It's time to move on, yadda yadda yadda....
Not surprised. The real Gloucester is dying (with plenty of help from the asinine government fishing regs). Now it's douchebag hispters and wannabe WASPs who can't afford to live in Magnolia or Manchester.

Once they started with the whole new area codes and overlays thing, I always wondered why they had to be so many random sets of digits.(234, 443, 571). The previous system had been so orderly, #0# and #1#. Why couldn't they have adopted other uniform sequences instantly recognizable as area codes? Like #2# or ##0?

One small correction: Gloucester IS dead, but doesn't know it yet.
Between the lunacy of the city government, the federal gubmint's intrusion into the fishing industry and the foolish moves intended to "remake" the place into a Tourist Destination, might as well bring in the bulldozers.
When I first moved to Rockport 2 1/2 years ago, I found Gloucester picturesque and interesting. Experiencing the collapsing infrastructure and the rampant idiocy of the locals has soured the experience, to put it mildly.
The collapse of a town is sad to see. But it was deserved...no, earned.

For decades, liberals told us that America was too big, that we needed to be taken down a peg, that we needed a punch in the nose.
Here comes 9/11 and the Moslems did what they were dreaming about. Remember one of the first reactions from the Media? "Ask yourself why they hate us." NOT "Animals that ought to be exterminated" but "Let's look at their grievances."
And Moslems have been the most favored religion by the left ever since. The left admires the Moslems and will do anything it can to protect and nurture them.

Russian President Vladimir Putin says that has to change. "You can't really ask Syria, or any other country, to disarm unilaterally while military action against it is being contemplated," Putin said in an interview with a Russian television network.
This is in reaction to Obama's suggestion that should diplomacy fail (how could it?) military action would be required. So .. to recap....Obama put down a 'Red Line Ultimatum", and when it was pointed out that the Red Line Ultimatum had been tested and that something must be done. well, hell you know the dance...so if diplomacy fails, President Obama seems to have appended another ultimatum to his list of things that Syria must do if there is to be world peace.
If one ultimatum does not achieve the desired results, issue another one.

DENVER (AP) — Two Democratic state lawmakers who backed tighter gun laws in the aftermath of mass shootings have been kicked out of office in a recall election promoted by both grassroots activists and the National Rifle Association.
Senate President John Morse lost by just 343 votes Tuesday in a swing district in the Republican stronghold of Colorado Springs but Sen. Angela Giron lost by a bigger margin in a largely blue-collar district that favors Democrats.
"The loss of this senate seat is purely symbolic," Morse said.

I went into the shop to get something and they told me about the first hit, and I thought "what a tragedy." I went back in about a half hour later and they told me about the second one. I told them "We're under attack, boys. We're at war." No one wanted to believe me.
The call came in about 5 minutes later to release check all the other aircraft that had not been on the release check schedule for that day, and the ordies followed right behind us with weapons skids. It is the first...and I pray the last...time I have ever seen live weapons loaded on aircraft sitting on the flight line rather than at the hot pad at NAS Oceana. Up and down the flight line, Hornets as far as you could see, all with warshots on the wingtips. The Tomcat side was loaded as well.
and the silence...that eerie silence...absolutely nothing in the air...
By that evening half of our aircraft were onboard USS George Washington (CVN-73) enroute to NYC.
FWIW, the Cole was in our battle group when she was hit. She was fueling up to go through the canal and join up with us in the Med.
Fuck all of those bastards. My idea of paradise will be feeding the fire that they are burning in.

Willow, you're a lovely woman, so I say this without any trace of snark: why is it the role of the United States to raise "the hopes and prospects of embittered children?" Or, rather, why should it fall to us rather than to those childrens' nations?
I understand, in a vague "HOPE ship" way, that a benevolent US presence in the world can lead people to think that perhaps the Great Satan is not all that. Yet we've funded, with food and money, regimes that have been hostile to us for years with no result (NoKo being one example). When do we say that enough foreign aid to ungrateful / hostile nations is enough?

I haven't messed with the bluray burners, but have had some success with a regular DVD burner with a few caveats.
1. You have to set the output of your cable box to 480i. HD input isn't supported on any of the DVD burners I've used, but maybe bluray burners are different.
2. It used to be almost impossible to get a DVD burner with HDMI or component inputs. My box won't output the widescreen bit on the S-video out so it's very possible you'll be stuck with a letterbox recording instead of a widescreen recording. I did find an old panasonic DVD burner on ebay with component in, so I send the 480i input into that and then daisy chain that to a more recent burner so it burns with the widescreen bit.
3. The 480i recordings look pretty good, the only problem is darker shows look crappy.

I remember 9-11 completely. I was watching the local news, later than I normally would have because I had a doctor appointment in the morning. I was watching the local NBC station and can even remember the anchors of the morning. At about 5 minutes before 6:00, the local anchor said there was a report of a plane hitting the World Trade Center and he switched to video from New York. I guess they were bouncing around everywhere - I have no idea whose video it was but it wasn't the GMA stuff linked earlier - because they showed a view from what was, I'm guessing, either across one river in Brooklyn or the other river in New Jersey. There were two guys talking and one was saying, "It's terrorism." I said to the TV, "Let's not leap to any conclusions," and maybe a minute later, the second plane hit and I said to no one, "OK, that's terrorism."
And now, to my eternal distress, I see more and more women wearing hijab. To some extent, it's because I live near a large mosque. (It's the Islamic Center of Seattle, formerly the Idris Mosque, but I guess they changed the name so no one would pay attention to the fact that the place was paid for by Saudis. Their website used to acknowledge the prince Idris who paid for it.) Anyway, it's still very disconcerting to see a woman in black, head to toe, not even her eyes showing, trying to sort through some papers with thick red gloves on. It's very disconcerting to drive by the mosque at noon on Friday and see the men with their pants rolled up over their ankles (Mohammed thought trousers below ankles were vain - go figure). And it's really disconcerting to see what look like white men with full beards and rolled up trousers because how can a decent American fall for that shit? (I only mention white men because there are so many African/Arab immigrants at this mosque that I would not be able to tell an American black man from an African immigrant.) When I see these women in the grocery store, just their faces showing, I always want to treat them as if they were as invisible as they seem to want to be, but I just can't bring myself to be that shitty, even though if this were an Islamic republic, I would be shoved off the sidewalk to walk in the gutters like a good dhimmi.
Our poor country, committing suicide.

I could spend two hours and have over 100 links to separate events involving the knock-out game, black-on-white rioting, or other forms of black targeting of white or Asian people, nationwide.
It's not isolated to NYC. It is an epidemic. Oddly, I have a (somewhat dated) dataset that I plotted in some software, and it looks like Peoria, Illinois has or had a MAJOR problem with it.
But you don't hear about it. The guy in Syracuse who had his eye kicked out of his head and died, or the guy riding his bike on Lakeshore Drive in Chicago, or the college kid walking home in Urbana - the ones that live know the truth.
Should you choose to investigate yourself, keep in mind that this topic attracts Nazis like a moth to a flame. There are plenty of more legitimate sources, but you will need to sift through them and it is disgusting. If I were to include the blatantly racist sources, I could easily find over 300 events in a very short period of time, going back over a decade.

On the 14th, the wife and I had to drive across Ohio to Pittsburgh to visit the mother-in-law, who was very sick. We got off the turnpike east of Toledo and just drove across the heartland, listening to the National Prayer Service on the radio. So genuine and so moving were the hundreds of flags, spontaneous makeshift memorials, and home made signs expressing sadness ... prayer ... fury.
Mass that Sunday was packed, more than Christmas Eve or Easter.
I remember telling my wife, that we now knew what it was like to be alive on December 1941. A clear enemy. Unity of purpose aligned behind an inspiring President. No division.
All of it a distant memory now, killed by the hyper-partisan state religion of the Democratic party and the only enduring principle it has -- gimme free sh!t.

This little girlÂ’s death wasnÂ’t even a comma in the manifesto they hoped to write. They made sure that her last moments alive were filled with horror and blood, screams and fear; they made sure that the last thing she saw was the desperate faces of her parents, insisting that everything was okay, weÂ’re going to see Mickey, holding out a favorite toy with numb hands, making up a happy lie. And then she was fire and then she was ash."
