Here in Pennsylvania, if you pass a bicycle, the law is you have to maintain four feet of distance. Try that on the average ten foot wide road, with a six foot wide car. It doesn't happen unless you go over the center line. Go over the center line, it's a ticket, or maybe a head-on crash. When I pass a bicycle, unless he's hugging the shoulder when I go by, its a long horn blast and the middle finger.

First, I have a Shirley Temple story.  She entered the movies at the age of three in 1931; by 1935, she was the nationÂ’s number-one box office attraction.  Her films singlehandedly saved Twentieth Century-Fox from bankruptcy, and studio head Darryl Zanuck publicly called her “the worldÂ’s eighth wonder.”

But there was also a darker side to TempleÂ’s appeal, one that was noted by the writer Graham Greene in 1937, in his review of Wee Willie Winkie.  In a passage that cost him a libel suit, he wrote:

This is the thing. The cyclists are supposed to follow the same rules as me driving a car.
I think some cyclists forget that the cars that are out there are doing a speed that will close on them reeeeeeeaaalllll fast if you pull out in front of me. Plus, as a car driver I have to watch out for dogs off a leash, skateboarders, pedestrians who think that since I have to give them the right of way in a cross walk gives them a license to wander out  50 ft. front of me as I approach them doing the speed limit, texting drivers, stupid drivers, drivers window shopping at a garage sale, and anyone or thing that thinks they have a right to be in front of me.

STOP at the stop sign. Walk your bike across the road if it is busy. Teach your kids to obey the traffic laws also.

222 I have the worst bike situation of anyone. Our little road runs parallel to the interstate so lots of people use it to avoid traffic. There are several condo complexes populated by people who drive huge Caddies and Buicks. The road is narrow, shady and curvy. The bikers are extraordinarily plentiful. Once my husband had to take one to the hospital while I searched for his teeth in the culvert. It is a bad road for bikes and I am sick of being stuck behind them the whole way with no place to pass.

I live on a 3.9 mile circle,   about half of which has a bike lane. The Sunday morning peloton comes by  promptly at 9:30 and usually consists of about 50 riders. Everybody around here is pretty tolerant of    bikes, thank goodness. I haven't had too much trouble when I ride  to keep my new heart plumbing in good  order.

 

Occasionally, I'll ride   down to the big corner about three miles away. I always take  the sidewalk since there's no bike lane   plus   it's a four lane  and 45mph.  No cop has ever even looked at me while doing that.  If I ever have to explain to the nice officer why I'm on the sidewalk, I'll just say I'm not about to risk my life on the road with the cars.

 

I'll  tell the judge the same thing  whilst explaining why I don't have the money to pay my ticket,  should it come  to that.

Mostly here the bikes are OK.  Although occasionally I have a "WTF" moment.

The road outside my subdivision is actually a state highway, quite busy 4 lanes (6 in a few places) and yet we get bikers just taking a lovely ride, drifting out of the bike lane into traffic.

What I fail to understand is why these bikers ride this rode, when 100 yards away is the Katy Trail, that connects to a smaller loop around a lake, and 4 other bike trails.

 

Now when I had to drive to a friends house in the city, that was frustrating.  I almost hit another friend as we were driving to the same place because I assumed (wrongly I guess?) that if he was on the road he'd follow stop signs and such.  I arrive at a stop sign before him, I go to make my turn and he...just doesn't stop, and almost hits me on the way buy.

I chewed him out in the car (much the same as Radish's rant) and his response was "well it's safer if I don't stop."

I just gave up.

I had defensive driving in high school, back when they showed horrifying crashes routinely. It changed my POV. I've been in accidents when cars did incredibly stupid things in front of me, in one case I had about 10 nanoseconds to get my car sideways (the entire family was in it) to avoid a head on crash with some kid coming right at me. My wife left the scene in an ambulance, the kids were fine. I see people in cars, every single solitary day doing stupid stuff, not paying attention, one hand on wheel, other phone to ear. It's rampant. I want at least 3500 pounds of automobile wrapped around me and or family member. I believe in defensive driving, it saved my life and my kids. But what these knuckleheads on bikes are doing is not practicing defensive driving, even, as Heather Radish pointed out, they're tempting Newtons Laws. It's 'in your face' taking over the lane. It's aggressive, not defensive. Mix that with inattentive/distracted drivers and it's a deadly combination. Newton Laws will win. If you really cared about your two daughters you would stay the hell off the highway with a bicycle.

This happens to me all the time, particularly with cars pulling out of the gate of an apartment complex.  I'm riding on the street.  The gate opens, they pull up, look both ways and then pull right in front of me.  So far, I've only gone over the handlebars once.

When I lived in Phoenix, there was I bicyclist I used to see on my daily commute who would ride with a large hog leg type pistol in a holster on his left hip.  Drivers tended to give him space and not push him into the curb or force him to drive over sewer grates.  If Texas ever allows open carry, I will probably start doing the same.

(Although I confess, the mountain bikers on the hiking trails at the state park near my old house were quite frustrating.  You'd go for a run on a hiking trail and suddenly you'd hear "Coming through" and they'd take the hairpin (with hill on one side and sheer bluff on the other) at 10MPH or so, with me clinging to the side of the hill trying not to get squished.)

I liked the t-shirt with "186,000 miles per second.  It's not just a good idea. It's the law."  That was from back when the double nickle was the law of the land and they used to run commercials with a similar message about 55 mph.

The same guy had a t-shirt with the message "Reunite Gondwanaland!"

299 Lots of people in China, Vietnam and other places ride bikes on a daily basis to go to work. I think regular people should do this and important people (Like President Obama and people in the government) should excempt because they stuff to do for us. Then we would have less pollution, less accidents, fatalities and insurance rates would drop too.

The Dayton vicinity has 300+ miles of bicycle highway. Not bike paths. Foot and bicycle traffic only. Except for street crossings, the bicycles never encounter a motor vehicle. Lots of people commute to WPAFB on bicycles. If you live within 5 or so miles, there is a time advantage over driving, at least during heavy traffic hours.

Even at that, though, there is "conflict" between fast and slow bicycle traffic, and dog runners.

Bicycles were infantilized after the car became the thing. Most bicycles, even today, are the equivalent of toy bicycles, and not fit for daily use. It's assumed that bicycle operators have diminished capacity, because for a long time they were used only by children.

Dayton, obviously, has a different feeling about bicycles, historically -- but also had a lot of open usable land when they moved towns and rivers around for their massive flood control projects. In some areas, what were formerly back alleys became the bikeway. Alleys arose in a time when streets were mostly for walking, and fuel delivery and trash removal were "around the back." Experience has shown that most cities aren't very willing to keep up their alleys anymore.

But I don't like it when railroad rights of way are converted to bike paths. They tend to connect, erm, "incongruent" parts of cities, and you have to wonder what will happen if we ever need those railways again. Moving crude oil, for instance.

Making a railroad right of way into a bike path preserves the contiguous right of way.  If it is wide enough, you might be able to put a single rail line and bike path next to each other. 

I remember several years ago when the City of Los Angeles was trying to reopen a commuter train tunnel only to find that over the years the builders of high rise buildings had sunk their foundations down so that the tunnels were blocked in numerous locations. 

This is the main issue with bicycle paths in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.  There are lots of bicycle paths but they are put in primarily for local recreation and they don't connect to each other.  It is also impossible to cross the Trinity River by any route that is both legal and safe.  The reason that I have never commuted by bicycle in this town is because every conceivable route contains at least one section that involves serious risks and a guarantee that one day my luck would run out.

Wasn't he a fox original?  He has a loyal audience at 3.  He's the Olberman of Fox.  I know people who would tivo olberman and not miss a program.  They do the same with Shep.  Oprah's old audience moved over to Shep.

I don't watch him but he has such a wide appeal I find myself wondering what it is but, did the same thing with olberman and oprah.
