Humpday!

Ace covered the big news last night -- the House is gonna try a defunding CR, say leadership sources. Two things, though: (1) officially, no member of leadership and no leadership aide will confirm the story -- a leadership spokesman says that the decision on what to do won't come until after a caucus meeting this morning; and (2) "many House insiders" expect that Sens. Cruz and Lee will be unable to push a defunding CR through the Senate and that the House will turn to a "Plan B," which looks a lot like the Cantor plan.

There are officially just four legislative days left on the House calendar, but it's looking very likely that the House will cancel next week's planned recess.

Buzzfeed has 9 potential mass shootings that were averted by armed citizens.

And that's all I've got time for this morning. If you haven't listened to last week's podcast yet, it's a good one:

1 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Wednesday, September 18, 2013.  On this day in 1837  Tiffany and Co. (first named Tiffany & Young) was founded by Charles Lewis Tiffany and Teddy Young in New York City. The store was called a "stationery and fancy goods emporium".  And they are still around and have a collection named Tiffany 1837 to celebrate their founding.  But this is not for us Morons.

2 As I predicted, the gun grabbing goons are out once again despite the recall of those CO gun grabbers.  They are trying to get up the "mental health" issue again over this latest cluster F.  And I like this:

In March, South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham spearheaded a plan to change firearm background check laws so that those with court-documented mental illness would not be able to purchase guns.

I hope Nancy Boy's Primary opponents let everyone know that he is pushing more useless gun control.   There are already laws on the books for this so obviously what they want is to back-door something else in.  I'm sure that it will go over very well in SC.  For this latest event it would have had ZERO impact for the same reason that the laws the SOB broke had ZERO impact.  On two occasions the law allowed him to slide on gun related felonies.  IOW, there were ALREADY laws on the books that could have prevented this IF they had been enforced.  Of course, he was in one of those MAGIC gun free zones as well.

4 Issa says they could recall senior witnesses for the Benghazi felonies so he can get some more TV time.

"We can certainly have Mrs. Clinton back," Issa said of the former Secretary of State.  "We want to be respectful of her time, so getting to the facts, including people below her, first is critical."

Why?  So she can lie to you again with impunity?  No we know it wasn't perjury because you failed to have her testify under oath.  But thanks to a change it the law, it doesn't matter because lying to congress carries the same penalty as perjury anyway.  But what difference does it make now?  Multiple felonies were committed over this mess and nobody has even been charged, much less prosecuted.  If this was a Republican administration and the same incompetent shit had happened there would already be people in jail.

5 Obama is about to use ADA (illegally) to require movie theaters to accommodate blind and deaf people.  Note that the corrupt department of justice has decided they can change the stupid and abused ADA law on their own.  ADA currently requires "reasonable" effort to accommodate handicapped people and it was intended for things like people in wheel chairs.  This shit is not "reasonable".  This has been one of the most abused laws in history.  Movie theaters are already on the edge of collapse, this would be the straw on the camel's back.  It would also open up some more lawyer bait in a law that appears to have been written for lawyer bait.

6 A 13 year old boy has died at football practice in TX due to allergic reaction to ant bites (fire ants from other sources of this story).  The State at home used to use old B-17 bombers to spread poison to kill and control these things when I was a kid.  But the fed stepped in and said, hey South we don't give a shit for you and the rest of the country doesn't have these fire ants so quit spreading that poison that may cause damage someone if they ate 50 pounds of it for breakfast.

So you Morons who may be moving to the South from the North be aware we have a variety of ant that is simply the spawn of the devil and if you have never been exposed to them you may be allergic and not know it.  And even if you are not allergic it is still a painful and then itchy bite and they are very aggressive and will chase you down by the thousands.  When you get here have someone show you one of their mounds so you can know what to look for and take steps to eradicate them and avoid them.  Note in this article they say that there were numerous mounds around the football field that were known and not taken care of.  I suspect the lawyers are already up and running there.

13 The Fraser Institute has dropped the US 15 places in the world rating for economic freedom since Obama took office.  Heritage's report had previously dropped the US as well.   I have never looked at this report but if you look at the Heritage report it shows that countries at the high end of economic freedom also enjoy the most robust economies while those at the lower end are mired in stagnation.  This is the most significant contributor to the US still being mired in a depression since Obama took office.

What constitutes a "court-documented" mental illness?

I mean, if I go to my doctor and tell him I'm feeling a little blue, one would assume the courts won't have that documented... right???

So how does it get to the courts?  Are doctors going to be required to report to the state, anyone who they deem mentally ill?  What if my ex decides to talk about that time during the divorce (I'm not divorced, this example is for illustration purposes ONLY) when I went a little loopy?   Is that considered "court-documented?

The  courts and the  state:  not a place I want my mental health documented.

45

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.  Here are a couple of quick (and nice) stories.

First, the great John Barrymore:  towards the end of his life, he had his lines written on blackboards and held up just outside of camera range, even though he generally knew his lines already.  “The blackboard is to me what a net is to a circus trapeze artist,” he explained.  “He can do his quadruple somersaults with confidence, as long as he knows the net is there to catch him just in case.”

Came the time when he was offered Macbeth, one of his favorite Shakespearean roles.  But the venue was the Hollywood Bowl, and Barrymore was stumped when it was pointed out to him that there would be no place to hide his blackboards.

Barrymore thought for a moment.  Then his face brightened.  “IÂ’ll have them use skywriting.”

Now a story about Rock Hudson:  known primarily as a light actor, HudsonÂ’s first real dramatic role was in 1954s Magnificent Obsession, where he played the part of a careless playboy turned surgeon in order to restore the sight of a woman he accidentally blinded.  Hudson was nervous all through the shoot, not just because of the meat of his part, but also because his co-star, Jane Wyman, had just won an Oscar.  He often forgot his lines and sometimes required thirty or forty takes for a scene, but Wyman never complained.

After the picture had wrapped, Hudson sought out Wyman.  “Jane,” he said, “you really went out of your way to be nice to me when you didnÂ’t have to.  I want you to know that I do know that.  I appreciate it and I love you for it.”

“Let me tell you something,” Wyman smiled.  “It was handed to me by somebody and I handed it to you.  Now itÂ’s your turn to hand it to somebody else.”

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

That s what worries me about new legislation sponsored by Nancy Boy.  There is already a law in effect that if someone is declared mentally incompetent by a court that they can not own a gun.

So how was he going to change it to make that better.  But as I said, none of that really applies in this case since he was already involved in two felonies involving use of a gun and in both cases they failed to prosecute.

51 We simply must keep firearms out of the hands of those poor souls suffering from mental illness. No sane, reasonable person can deny the obvious.

The Sacred Duty to Report the News is equally important; we simply must keep the business of News Reporting out of the hands of the mentally unstable. No sane, reasonable person can deny the obvious.

The Business of Reporting the News is a Sacred Trust that can only be given to those of high moral character who solemnly swear an oath to intelligently pursue the facts, to report those facts, and do so in a timely manner so that the public can see the wisdom of the decisions made on their behalf by their elected representatives.

Therefore, I support the efforts of the Democrat party to license responsible individuals in the field of Journalism. Our great nation will only remain great for only as long as our exceptional citizenry are proper informed, well educated, and well represented in government.

No sane, reasonable, responsible person can deny the obvious.

Supposedly when they leave (or drop out of a campaign) there are only a few things they can do with campaign contributions:

1. Use it for future campaigns (there is a time limit)

2.  Give it to another politician(s) for their campaigns

3. Donate it to charity

However, I have NEVER heard of any pol being prosecuted for violating this so that leads me to believe that they are not enforcing it.

6 Vic:

As a Northern Boy (of about 30) I learned about fire ants the hard way -- by sticking my elbow in a mound while checking out how badly our van was stuck.

Do you have "velvet ants" in SC? They're not really ants but wingless wasps. I ran into them in Florida. Apparently people unfamiliar with them and allergic to bee stings die every year from anaphylactic shock because they think they got bitten by an ant when really they were stung by a wasp.

Once you get to southern Virginia and southwards there's plenty of deadly critters most northerners aren't familiar with.

Yes, we have them here.  They are all over the South.  The local name for them is "cow killer" because they are known for crawling into cow's ears in the pasture and stinging them causing death of the cow (or so the story goes).  I have never been stung by one so don't know how bad it hurts.  They are fairly easy to avoid and the usually come singleton and not in hoards like fire ants.

Another interesting thing about those things is that they are damn near impossible to kill by stepping on them while they are in the dirt. You can stomp them two inches into the ground and they will crawl right back up.

Got word from someone who should know in the VA GOP that so-called "moderate" factions are sandbagging support for Cuccinelli by, among other things, dragging feet on GOTV infrastructure and trying to suppress key endorsements.  This is also impacting down-ticket races like Lt. Governor (where EW Jackson is set to be the tie-breaking vote in the Senate) and Attorney General (where Mark Obenshain will be an even stronger conservative voice than Cuccinelli was).

The whole thing smells like Bill Bolling throwing a temper tantrum because the GOP voters didn't want him to run for Governor so he's going to go passive-aggressive against Cuccinelli.  However, since Bolling is a "moderate," don't expect to see Establishment voices complain about Republicans fighting Republicans on this.

Mainly, Establishment cranks would rather have a McAuliffe governor (motto:  we'll do for VA what O'Malley has done for MD!) than live with Cuccinelli.

149 Grace and peace, A Gospel song, "How I Got Over" from the American-American tradition and Civil Rights movement written in 1961 by Clara Ward (1924-1973) . Mahalia Jackson sang it at the March On Washington in March of 1963. Even though it is strongly associated with the Civil Rights movement It's a powerful song that I think a Christian of any race can appreciate "My soul looks back in wonder, how I made it over...I look at the "man who died for me" .....I'm gonna thank God for how He kept me. I'm gonna thank Him that he never left me....I'm gonna thank God for old time religion. I'm gonna thank God for a vision." I found this today when I was looking for something as part of my daily devotional; I think some here may find it a blessing. Listen to the whole thing if you can. :^) And here's the "Queen of Gospel" Mahalia Jackson singing this song in a live broadcast: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRVzOV5ZaLs Jackson was a women of deep faith and that infuses her songs. David Ritz wrote, "Her voice is a heartfelt express ion of all that is most human about us—our fears, our faith, our hope for salvation… Hope is the hallmark of Mahalia Jackson and the gospel tradition she embodies." 150 #73 When I was reading an article in the WSJ a few days ago about the chaos surrounding Gaylord Focker's Syrian clusterfuckery it mentioned that when the Indonesian had the brain fart to go to Congress, which was in recess, he contacted Boehner in a hotel in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Whatever happened to the concept of meeting with the people you represent on these breaks? McConnell, Reid and Pelosi were all in their home districts but Johnny B was living large two fucking time zones away from the people who he is supposed to answer to. I don't begrudge people taking vacations with their family but if we're criticizing the JEF for gallivanting hither and yon when the country's in the shitter, that knife cuts both ways.

153 Mainly, Establishment cranks would rather have a McAuliffe governor (motto: we'll do for VA what O'Malley has done for MD!) than live with Cuccinelli. Posted by: @JohnTant at September 18, 2013 08:29 AM (hNNJ5) VA, along with many other states has been sold out by the commie wing of the Republican party. I cannot imagine a sane working citizen with aspirations for their children voting for McAuliffe, who has never been anything other than political pond scum, but "our" Repub representatives think he (McA) will be better than a (gasp!) conservative that might damage the party image by taking a stand.

162 VA, along with many other states has been sold out by the commie wing of the Republican party. And the nation at large. And, to some extent they're right. Conservatism is a tough sell. One person is promising you free stuff, and the other is promising you hard work. Which one are you going to take? But then I look back at history and the plethora of people who stood for what was right, even though it was a "hard sell." We remember their names, usually fondly. We don't remember the people who merely backed down, or if we do their names are synonymous with "traitor" and "weakling."

172 What is more appealing than the ability to say, "get out and leave me alone?" The ability to say, "Yo. Make me a sammich." Seriously, it depresses me to think about. These people have lives that are morally equal to those of slaves. They have no freedom of movement, any attempt to better themselves will be ruthlessly opposed- often by their fellows, and they are expected to work (vote) for their masters. In return, they are provided room (nicer digs nowadays) and board (better food nowadays). Yet they see themselves as "free" because they "don't have to work." They are free from the tyranny of choice.

The VA GOP is already navigating the loss of goodwill with the way they handled the last Presidential primary - they didn't allow any candidates other than Romney and Paul on the ballot.

Now there are arguments to support that decision, but the way it was handled (and the proposed then rescinded requirement/suggestion that GOP primary voters take an oath to vote for the nominee winner) just turned a lot of people off.

There's a lot wrong with the VA GOP, and I don't see it getting any better.

Thanks for the story about Barrymore (I love any actor who appreciates Shakespeare).

You're welcome, FS.  Here's another:

Barrymore was a drunk and very often forgot lines, so, as mentioned, he had them written, even for his appearances on radio.  One day, he saw a producer looking at the signs.  "You think I've lost my memory, don't you?"  Barrymore said.  "Give me a Shakespeare play and a scene."  The producer was too startled to reply, so Barrymore reeled off Hamlet's soliloquy, never missing a word.

"But if you can do that, why the signs?" the producer asked.

"Dear boy," Barrymore replied, waving a hand to the signs, "why should I fill my mind with that garbage only to have to forget it all tomorrow?"

217 17 And some good news (or views). Today's Shorpy shows you why Grace Kelly was considered such a babe in 1954 when she was 25 years old. Look at those eyes. Ironically she was named after her father's sister who died at a young age. She died at 52. In a terrible car crash. She was also from a very wealthy family in Philly, then she married the Prince. http://tinyurl.com/3a4zqj

As opposed to an eco-friendly biodegradable fair trade  farmed-wood-stock shotgun?

That's the only kind I like.   For future generations.

219 "191 Why do I have the feeling that this latest shooting won't evoke quite the hysteria and 24/7 punditry and blame shifting as other shootings have?" Pretty much every detail that has come out has gone against the gun-control narrative. http://t.co/oAwTcB6jbi Gun Control’s Dead End The Left, if it’s honest, will find no reason for a new push for gun control in yesterday’s tragedy. By Charles C. W. Cooke "None of the usual political language applies here. Alexis, who killed twelve people, did not buy a weapon “from a friend” or “over the Internet” or in the “parking lot of a gun show”; he did not have a “high capacity” magazine from which to “spray” bullets around; he did not buy a “military style” “assault weapon” — nor even use one; he did not deploy “armor-piercing bullets.” Instead, he bought a shotgun, which almost nobody is openly suggesting should be banned or controlled. Politicians and public figures who call for new laws in the wake of this shooting will thus need nailing to the wall with a simple and reliable question: “What exactly do you propose doing, and how specifically would it have changed what happened at the Navy Yard?” When I have asked this question of non-journalists on Twitter, I have received a common — refreshingly honest — answer: “A gun ban.”"

I think most people want to believe they're being charitable, but charity is hard, so they have Papa Government do it for them.

Problem is, that's not virtue (nor charity) so it's not learned behavior either.

There's an apocryphal story that Prince Rainier, when wooing Kelly, visited Hollywood to meet some of her friends.  Like many people, the Prince loved showbiz gossip, so he asked one actor (reports vary on whom) who gave the best head in Hollywood.

"Easy!  Grace -" the actor began, before remembering who he was talking to and finishing with someone else's name.

224 Gas price per gallon at self-serve near in small city 7 mile from Boston $4.29. ThatÂ’s another of the JEFÂ’s accomplishments, no wonder so many of us are struggling just to keep up. Forget about buying anything to splurge on, thereÂ’s not enough money.

225 Perhaps also worth pointing out that the Remington Model 870 design is even older than the much-maligned AR-15 that killed the crazed gunman.

227 Dear boy," Barrymore replied, waving a hand to the signs, "why should I fill my mind with that garbage only to have to forget it all tomorrow?" That's great. Thx so much. It really gets hard to remember lines as you get older. Am I remembering that you're sometimes actor, MPPP? Maybe that doesn't happen to you or you're young enough so that is doesn't. :^) I prefer to direct now- when I have the time-because I;d rather not deal with lines unless it's a fun, small character part.

The 870 is about as simple as you get.

Smooth bored pump action shotgun.  Not much a liberal can latch onto there.

The only thing simpler would be a Muzzle loader (maybe a Single action revolver depending on how you count "complex")

You forgot the most dangerous animal of all-

"...a Florida man..."

Posted by: I Am Rex Ryan's Spleen at September 18, 2013 09:21 AM (8sCoq)

No, the most dangerous of all is a Florida man who says "Here, hold my drink and watch this."
Posted by: joncelli

No, most dangerous is a CW4 in Florida, just after he says "have you ever done this ..."

THIS

But it's not a CW4, actually it's a Master Sergeant at Camp Mackall.

....or Camp Rudder.

An H&R single shot break action 20g.  You can get other barrels for it as well.  My current Bambi killer is one of their 357mag barrels bored out to 357max.  But the base 20g is simple, safe, cheap and can be honestly used for wide range of tasks.

40, Burt, I was grabbed once by a crazy guy.  No harm done but still he had been lunging at every woman listening to an ipod before he grabbed at me, so I filed a police report.

A few days later, I got a phone call asking if I could appear as a witness in court so he could be committed.  I did, and I assume he was as he was floridly psychotic, although who knows for how long.

But that is court-documented mental illness.

Problem is, I had to miss a complete day of work because the court kept putting off my hearing and I don't know how many people can do that and not miss a day's pay.  When the court is disrespectful of witnesses and victims, it's hard to get people to follow through.  As a matter of fact, the first cop seemed annoyed that I wanted to file a report and I always wanted to track him down to tell him I actually followed through.
