FRI-DAAAAAAAAY!

POLL: the last time Obamacare received majority support according to ABC-Post polls was in August 2009. There's some amazing results in this one, including that more men than women support the healthcare law.

Home Depot plans to cancel its health coverage for approximately 20,000 part-time workers and send them to the Obamacare exchanges.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee sent around this Buzzfeed-esque release on the President's hypocrisy on Keystone XL. And, how 'bout an extended trailer for the upcoming Phase 2 film Thor: The Dark World?

Have a great weekend.

4 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Friday, September 20, 2013.  On this day in 2000 Robert Ray announced the end of the Whitewater investigation, and said there was insufficient evidence to charge President Clinton and his wife, Hillary.   Note he did not say they were innocent.

24 Tom Delay is totally vindicated. They tried to George Zimmernam his ass. Essentially, they succeeded because he was forced out of office. 31 Well at least we now know the official Fed policy on how they are going to deal with the National Debt.  Devaluing our currency.  This really sucks because the Wife and I have been dumping money into savings and our 401K's for decades.  I am very nearly at the point of cashing it all in and buying property, because in a few years it will be worthless.  ~4-5% currency inflation per year will mean I will have doodley squat in the bank 10 years from now when I was planning on us both retiring.

33 There's some amazing results in this one, including that more men than women support the healthcare law. Men, who for the vast majority of their lives will not need to see a doctor. Men, who I would bet receive something like 10% of the annual premium in actual services. I'm finding that really hard to believe.

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.

I was looking for a specific picture of Greer Garson from the film Julia Misbehaves, but I canÂ’t seem to find it.  However, hereÂ’s a quick little clip of her dancing in the costume I wanted to show you:

http://tinyurl.com/pewe3fh

In 1949, Garson and Errol Flynn co-starred for the first time in That Forsyte Woman.

The two had never met before, and the swashbuckling Flynn was intimidated by GarsonÂ’s manufactured imperious image.*  “We stalked each other like terriers for a couple of days,” Garson recalled, “then we found out we had a terrific lot in common.”

Flynn was so nervous about meeting her, he downed three vodkas in advance. Then he walked up, slapped her on the ass and said “Hi ya, Red!” The cast all held their breath until Garson let out a torrent of laughter, and the two were inseparable companions during the shoot, with Flynn up to his old tricks once he knew Garson had a sense of humor. In a scene where she goes to the closet to hang up a gown, she opened the door and found Flynn already in the closet.

Wearing only a top hat.

She screamed and almost fainted, but got even soon afterward. In a carriage scene, Flynn’s line was “Now, my dear, shall we alight?” When he touched the door latch, he shot to the roof – Garson had had one of the electricians wire it up to give Flynn the shock of his life.

And here’s a picture of Carolyn Jones, in a pose that explains why she was known as “the Beat Bette Davis” early in her career:

http://tinyurl.com/nax6nce

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

*Garson was a charming woman with a wonderful sense of humor, but MGM head Louis B. Mayer saw her as a grande dame, and kept steering her to dramatic roles, much like William Randolph Hearst forced paramour Marion Davies (a gifted comedienne) into costume roles that smothered her impish charm.

36 I am very nearly at the point of cashing it all in and buying property Buy some properties and become a landlord. The generation of young adults coming of age are so saddled with their own debt and lowered job prospects they'll never buy a home. Traditional supply and demand dictates that rents are going to go through the roof. With amnesty around the corner, it might not be a bad idea to learn a few phrases in Spanish like, 'Where's the rent money, deadbeat?'

40 While I generally don't believe polls, if we are to assume there is some accuracy to that one, I think the explanation may go something like this:

Women are more keenly aware of the healthcare industry, and would therefore be more likely to be concerned about how the law is going to effect their access, and their premium payments.

Men, of whom  there is a large percentage who don't really think much about the healthcare industry, figure if the government makes them buy insurance, or their employers offer it, it doesn't really matter.  And may even be looking forward to not feeling like they HAVE to buy insurance.  Just wait until you get sick, right?  Then sign up at that point, or pay some nominal fine, or whatever.

I could see it going like that.

58 Men, of whom there is a large percentage who don't really think much about the healthcare industry, figure if the government makes them buy insurance, or their employers offer it, it doesn't really matter. Better then anything I got. I guess because I used to sit down and write out the company premium check every month I actually thought about how much money was being spent in return for the services rendered. I knew who got sick, who had to go to the ER, or to the hospital. Men were getting next to nothing in services, while paying through the nose.

Posted by: Schrödinger's cat [/i] at September 20, 2013 03:39 AM (U2UQk)

59 I would like to put an idea out there that some people may not have thought of regarding Democrat strategy. IF the House votes to defund ObamaCare and say that Harry Reid actually allows the vote to give cover to those Democrat Senators up for re-election and then Obama vetos the bill, would this not set up the 2nd phase of the Sequester? The upshot would be ObamaCare would be funded due to Obama's veto with no new Bill, BUT that money would have to be found by taking it from other domestic programsÂ…like Food Stamps, etc. It would be a partial win for taxpayers as it would trim money spent on other wasteful mismanaged programs but still a loss because that money would be dumped into another ill conceived program designed to waste any money it receives on a cadre of bureaucrats. Whom can we talk to about confirming what actually happens? I believe the threat of a shutdown is bogus because the Budget Control Act of 2011 would kick in to force funding under a preset diminished formula. A formula we have found out that only LIMITS the rate of growth and does not reduce the amount of actual money spent.

Yes, you really can see Jones' resemblance to Davis, especially around the eyes.  Unfortunately, Jones didn't age well (in fairness, she did suffer bad health most of her life), and even in certain stills from The Addams Family, you can see a sort of jowly, puffy look.  Still, she was a lovely, funny lady, and it's too bad she didn't have more of a Hollywood career.

85 I'm skeptical. The entire health-insurance-through-employers thing is a decidedly female-oriented system. It's no coincidence that the entire industry got its start just as women were entering the wage-earning workforce right around WWII. It reflects and appeals to a certain economic mindset -- Stable, ultra-low-risk tolerance, predictable. It's sort of like the way that (mostly female) teachers choose their retirement plans -- they overwhelmingly select the annuities. Most men would not buy any health coverage, or at most one of those cancer-and-car-accident high deductible plans that should cost maybe $30 a month. The GOP had one shot to end this debacle, but they were too in bed with the insurance companies to even consider ending the state-sponsored link between health care, insurance and employers. We're so boned.

95 59 -

I've gone without health insurance in  the past, but once I had kids, that was it.  I was part of the "pay in so other people can use it" component of the health insurance ponzi scheme.

It seems rather simple to me, at this point.  The Obamacare system is not about giving more people access to healthcare, it's about forcing more people to pay in so others can use it.  And the dirty little secret is, most hospitals are salivating at the notion of fewer uninsured patients.

It's about shifting more of the cost to those of us who have ALWAYS shouldered most of the burden of the costs.  That there  are men out there who don't understand that means them though... well, as they say, ignorance is bliss.  Until it isn't.

99 There was a joke in the early 90's that if you hadn't gone bankrupt, you hadn't tried hard enough in the 80's (Reagan years). There was some element of truth to that, in that if you invested in a business, begged, borrowed, or even stole a pile of money to finance it, you did okay. But business cycles are business cycles and you had to pay the debt off quickly, before the inevitable short downturn. The only limit was physical endurance. The government pretty much left business alone, deregulated some industries, didn't create monstrous 2,000 page bills to disrupt the economy. But some people didn't really care, and while the middle class was exploding, they felt left behind. So they whined and whined and whined. So fast forward to the Obama years, where the middle class is slowly evaporating, total numbers of employed is still ~10 million less then a decade ago. The 2,000 page economy destroying bills are everywhere, not all yet implemented. The people who got left behind before are not whining about Obama, he's just fine, because no one is getting ahead. It's classic crabs in a bucket.

102 I made some awesome short ribs in the crock pot the other day- used a modified recipe I saw on facebook.

3 lbs short ribs

2 carrots - large chunk
2 onions - large pieces
2 celery ribs - large pieces
1/2 cup red wine
2.5 cups beef broth
1/2 cup apple cider
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoons Paprika
1 teaspoon pepper flakes
3 cloves garlic cut in larger chunks
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

Salt & pepper in some flour in a bag and coat the ribs - brown on all sides in a hot pan in some oil. I drained the oil when done.

Deglaze the pan with a 1/2 cup of red wine. then throw in the rest of the liquid and cook for a few minutes.  Add the garlic and spices and sugar and Worcestershire .

Line the bottom of the crock pot with veggies and lay the ribs on top of them.

Then add all the liquid to the crock pot and cook on high for 8-10 hours.

All my wife had was smoked paprika, but it was great.  For the last hour I took the lid off the crock pot and let the sauce thicken, then added some beef bouillon, pepper and a little more Worcestershire till it was ok.

Served with potatoes.  friggin awesome.

Burt - that's what insurance IS, in a nutshell.  But it's no ponzi scheme by a long shot.

You seem perturbed that other people got sick and not you!

You are simply laying down a bet with an insurer against your getting sick.

Do you feel cheated in the same way about car insurance?

You pool your money with thousands of other people, and the actuaries figure how likely you or someone else is to need a payout.  That, and profit, is what makes up the premium.

Most hospitals I've seen seem to be doing pretty well.. with new additions.. and they are constantly remodeling and rebuilding.

The libtards cite how "expensive" the uninsured are.  But when hospitals report how much "free" care they had to give out, they are quoting the highly inflated prices that no one really pays.  If you had a bill with a hospital go offer them 10-20% in cash.  They will gladly take it.  The $20 aspirin really only costs them 2 cents.

What O'care should have done was keep the system in place and just pay off the hospitals at cost for free services.

Ya know sven, if they'd have passed a law specific to that population, I'd have much less problem with it. They are often in legitimate need of help, the system is pretty good honestly but could use improvement. Whats needed most for HIV-infected persons is linkage and retention in care, and that often includes a lot of services unconnected to strictly health concerns.

And look, I know that aspect isn't popular, either, but Hell we're talking a disease you'd rather were contained and not touching anyone you know,  plus non-adherence is leading to superinfections like TB. I'd throw in to the pot to keep the black plague at bay, too.

141 Insurance Industry "But it's no ponzi scheme by a long shot." Global insurance-investment-banking Industry absolutely IS the most blatant of Ponzi schemes. First, don't try the blind rationale that would feign these financial corporations are not interwoven. These financial corporations are as it were a trinity with the most intricate legal protections against prosecution, owning politicians AND central banking board members of governments around the world. Insurance companies insure properties that should never be insurable. And when the insurance policies all come due at once, the insurance co. folds. As if no one made off with all the industry's income over the years while declaring bankruptcy when accountability arrives. Same with related financial corporative banking investments in derivatives, having the audacity to demand that taxpayers "refund" [pay twice again] the profits which the Boards already made off with, rewarding pirates not only with the booty but with the additional compounded tax-funds prize for being official thieves.

===================

My understanding is that the feds will set up and run an exchange for Texas, so one will exist.  The big question is, will employers in Texas have to pay the penalty if employees are on the exchange.  The law says "no" - only employees on "state run" exchanges will key the penalty.  The lawless administration says "yes" - that's really what congress meant, don't mind what the law says.   I think that's one reason why the employee reporting requirement was delayed for one year, to delay standing for the court case.

121 ICYMI, that link I posted has a pic of Christie Brinkley who is smoking hot at age 59...............

I saw that picture this morning too, it was attached to an article about how men give up on their appearance around age 46 but women keep trying until age 59. It was kind of odd I saw that because just this morning I was thinking to myself I wonder how long until I decide all this work to try to look good isn't worth it anymore. I will be logging another year in the books tomorrow and it's depressing. She looks wonderful for 59.

Terrible, especially that one victim was a 3 yr old kid.

If someone hasn't already said it - Chicago needs to tighten up their gun control after this shooting. They need to find out how the shooter(s) obtained the gun(s) and consider prosecuting the dealer and outlawing that model. In fact, let's get Piers Morgan's take on this. Oh.....Chicago is already a gun free zone? There's no Republican or conservative pol or organization to blame? Nevermind.(guess that's why it only got about 20 seconds of coverage on my local news)

I'm going the "Ace" route and denouncing my membership in the Republican party.  Now, I'm an independent with conservative/libertarian leanings.

Now that practically the entire country wants to dump Obamacare, we've got nothing to offer.

Back during the 90's, the right wanted to change welfare and the left wanted to expand it.  Newt had a plan and, when people compared it to the status quo and what the dem's wanted, it was no contest.  People flocked to the polls and voted the left out of office.

Today the issue is healthcare.  Everyone agrees that Obamacare sucks, but we've got nothing to replace it.  Not that there aren't a few good ideas out there, but if anyone tries to talk about them, they are a commie RINO who needs to shunned and primaried.

If republicans could just rise from being the stupid party to the mildly retarded party, this would be easy.  But, there is no chance of that happening.

So now, I'll comment from the sidelines as an observer instead of a participant.

I don't know how I went this long without mentioning it:  in The Addams Family, Carolyn Jones played both Morticia and her seemingly homicidal sister, Ophelia.  Mother Frump (Morticia's maiden name was "Frump") was played by. . .

Margaret Hamilton.

236 I don't suppose anyone here lives in one of their districts, but if ever something was phone call worthy, this is it. I checked, because I was pissed. In Pa it was shitbag lawyer (redundant, I know) up in a tiny little corner of the state. I guess after the last shifting around of the voting districts they couldn't carve out a (R) majority in that gawd-forsaken area. I wonder what Nancy Pelosi promised him in return for his ignorance.

I was unaware that Wisconsin and Michigan were gun running havens.

They use that same argument for DC, it's arguably defensible for DC because it's a small city isolated from a state more or less partially surrounded by Virginia.  Still a crappy argument, but not to far into crazy town.

Chicago is bordered by a lake, and more Illinois on each side .  So recycling arguments doesn't work to well there.

Fuck!  What  a  way  to  ruin  friday.  I  was  blissfully  ignorant  and  didn't  know  that  cocksucking  son  of  a   filthy  hippie  whore  was  coming  to  town.

On  a  happier  note,  I  talked  to  a  microbiologist  researcher  who  expects  HIV  to  mutate  into  an  airborne  pathogen  in  fifty  years  or  so.

ATC  did  you  know  the  Cleveland  Browns  were  originally  named  the  Brown  Recluse   Spiders  but  it  wouldn't  fit  on  the  score  board  so  they  shortened  the  name  to  the  Browns.

247 About men supporting the law more than women, I think it's the opposite of what it seems - women, who rely more on healthcare services, are disproportionately affected by the law's negative consequences - the main one being LOSING YOUR HEALTH INSURANCE.

Don't assume anyone buys the original premise anymore, just assume everyone sees it as 'pay a tax or pay more for health insurance that is worse.'

Women would be affected more by this than men, so it would make sense they'd oppose it more.

I agree completely.

I think a Federal law that supersedes all state regulation is in order.

How's this?

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

256 Okay, Hollywood historians, help me out here on this vague 50s/60s Carolyn Jones memory that I can't resolve on IMDB: She plays the incredibly fashionable hot neighbor who comes in to feed the dog/walk the dog/babysit the kids or some similar task while the lothario hero juggles and struggles with complicated and comic girlfriend(s) farce. She floats above it all while the hero digs himself deeper and deeper into a romantic hole, never saying a word about his predicaments. The point being that he's jumping through hoops for some meh blonde, while red-hot Carolyn is at his beck and call. They would have wanted Rock Hudson in the lead, but settled for another handsome lunk (Cliff Robertson? Rod Taylor?) Any guesses as to this movie?
