Happy Monday.

The hostage crisis continues at the Nairobi Westgate mall. At least 68 people are dead so far. Al Shebab says the attack is "retributive justice" for Kenya's part in trying to help Somalia fend off the Islamist butchers.

The FAA is getting ready to publish a rule allowing the use of electronic devices during takeoff and landing. It sounds like implementation will come next year.

As I mentioned back in one podcast, the Clinton camp would have wanted to salvage all the time spent grooming Huma Abedin by separating her from her deviant, unpopular husband. The NY Post says that's exactly what the Clinton people want. Includes this hilarious attribution: "The candidateÂ’s bird-flipping parting shot to reporters after his humiliating defeat this month made a bad situation even worse, according to New York."

AP reports that the review panel Obama appointed to scrutinize NSA surveillance is actually working out of offices borrowed from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. Participants and privacy advocates say this isn't the "independent group" the president promised. Heh.

NYTimes' front page finally notices something Republicans have been saying for years: under Obamacare, if you like your doctor, you may NOT get to keep your doctor. "Consumers should be prepared for 'much tighter, narrower networks' of doctors and hospitals..."

1 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Monday, September 23, 2013.  On this day in 1952 the most liberal Republican since Teddy Roosevelt said he was not a crook and said he was going to keep the dog "Checkers".  BION, this schmaltzy shit worked at the time.  Either that or people really didn't give a shit about the VP slot and Eisenhower was popular even though he too turned out to be somewhat of a liberal.  The irony of the thing was that the accusations, which came from a disgruntled Republican Earl Warren supporter, were such penny-ante chickenshit by today' standards it makes you wonder WTF.

2 US 'aggressively' probes Kenya attack

What a laugh, the incompetent and corrupt DOJ will investigate an act in Kenya because CNN said Americans were involved.  And DIABLO King rushed to the TV cameras.

New York Rep. Peter King, a member of the House Intelligence Committee, said on ABC’s “This Week” that al-Shabab is “one of the only Al Qaeda affiliates which actually has actively recruited here in the United States.”

3 The NRA has jumped on the BS mental illness train for the Navy base shooter.  As I keep saying, that is a strawman for this event.   The NRA should be harping on the two previous gun related felonies that were not prosecuted and asking why.  I am sure that if Obama gets involved with this "guns and mental health" bull shit neither the NRA nor the Morons will like the outcome.

AFP:

ZAMBOANGA, Philippines (AFP) - Philippine President Benigno Aquino on Sunday flew out of a major southern city where troops are fighting Muslim rebels, saying he expects the deadly battles to be over soon."I believe this will wind down within the day," he said before boarding a jet that flew him out of Zamboanga, where thousands of elite troops have been fighting Moro National Liberation Front(MNLF) gunmen for two weeks.Aquino also vowed to bring criminal charges against MNLF founder Nur Misuari, accused of being behind the rebel incursion.About <b>200 MNLF rebels</b> entered Zamboanga, a major trading centre with one million residents, on September 9 in the most serious armed challenge to the Philippine government in recent years. They took over several coastal districts, burning thousands of homes and taking scores of civilians hostage, in protest at an impending peace deal with a rival Muslim rebel group.

Kenya  is getting even more dramatic.

Now the Kenyans think there are jihadis in the crowd around the mall so they are shooting tear gas into the crowd to disperse it.

And a security expert says the huge explosion which caused the billowing column of smoke came from inside the building.  Which contradicts actual Kenyan security forces, allegedly.

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.  Thanks for the morning briefing, Gabe and Vic.    Say, is anyone else having trouble accessing Tumblr?  I canÂ’t seem to get on it, just a screen that tells me the connection is unavailable.

Anyway, hereÂ’s my contribution to the morning roundup:  I think I've told you about the actor John Gilbert before.  He was a great romantic star of the silent era and had a burning passion for Greta Garbo.  The two nearly married, in fact, but one of them - and it's never really been decided who - got cold feet and backed out.

If Gilbert's remembered at all today, it's for a cruel legend.  The story goes that somehow, Gilbert had offended the almighty Louis B. Mayer, and when the time came for Gilbert's first talkie – His Glorious Night - Mayer arranged for the sound technicians to fiddle with Gilbert's voice in order to make him sound high-pitched and squeaky.  It's not true, of course, but Gilbert's career didn't survive sound and he ended up drinking himself to death.

Our story takes place in 1929.  Noel Coward, the English actor, playwright, composer and lyricist, was making his first trip to Hollywood.  At the request of mutual friends, Gilbert put him up for a week and also threw a party in honor of his guest.

A few days later, after Coward had set sail for the Orient, Gilbert threw a stag party.  During it, he told his friend Samuel Marx* what had happened after Coward's party.

It seemed that the two were sitting by the fireplace, drinking.  Coward thanked his host for the party, speaking so warmly that Gilbert was embarrassed.  He hoped, Coward added, that their acquaintanceship would blossom into a true friendship.

"I suddenly realized," Gilbert told Marx, "he was drawing his chair closer.  I hardly noticed his hand on my knee, but when it slowly started crawling toward my crotch, I knew I had to so something.  But what?  He's a great man, a guest in my house, putting me on a hell of a spot.  I couldn't insult him but I was getting panicky.  I looked at his hand and then laughed uproariously in his face.

"I howled.  He got the message.  He jumped up huffily and went off to his room."

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

*Not of the Marx Brothers.  He was an MGM producer who later co-authored a book about the “suicide” of Jean HarlowÂ’s husband Paul Bern.

75 As a passenger in a place, the only time I'm ever nervous is the first 30-60 seconds after takeoff, because it's the most dangerous time of the flight.  Something goes wrong, the pilot doesn't have time or altitude to deal with it, and unlike at landing you're generally not lined up and already approaching a nice flat area devoid of objects that will shear wings, ignite the fuel, and otherwise ruin your day.

78 But seriously though, I think I answered my own question by asking it.  Some of us may have forgotten, the Clintons were popular with Hollywood types, and vice versa, at least for a while there.  What we know about Hollywood is that the stars don't become stars because of their talent.  They become starts because somebody decides to groom them to become stars.

I think the Dem party has gotten some mileage out of that approach, but maybe not as much as Hollywood has, because to some minor extent, politics DOES depend on talent.  Probably because there are times when you have to be out there by yourself, and not all your lines are being fed to you by your producers and directors and writers.

Obviously some get away with it though, as our current White House occupant can attest, but I suspect it's more miss than hit.  Hillary won't be President, for example, and whatever they planned to do with Huma doesn't look like it's going to work either.

She's enjoying it   immensely, so  it'll be a little while until I get to read it. The upside is you'll get two reviews on Amazon  instead of one.

Many thanks.

85 You can't truly be free if you're concerned with meaningless trivia like staying alive. Here, have some food stamps. Whenever I wanna get my wife pissed off I tell her that something like 100 million 'mericans work, and something like 100 million 'mericans get food stamps or some other food assistance. I heard, I think it was Rush, a couple days ago saying that something like 100 million 'mericans work, and something like 100 million 'mericans get assistance of some sort with health insurance. Almost one to one correspondence between workers and beneficiaries. So slave long and hard today Radish, your beneficiary depends on you.

Yes, she did write that one, though it's "Is that a pistol in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?" from 1933's She Done Him Wrong."

And of course, that movie is the source for her  famous "come up an see me sometime," which was actually "Come up sometime and see me.  Come on up, I'll tell your fortune."

96 Inre the airplane electronic devices ban... I'm cynical, but I never did think it was about electronic interference, but rather a clumsy was for the FAA to guide behavior. For instance, before takeoff the airline wants people to be easily moved around if needed. It's hard to herd people around when they get ensconced with their laptops in their seats. During takeoff, they want people alert in case of problems. Same with landings...stop fiddling with your laptop, make sure all your stuff is put away, and prepare for landing (a process that does have more risk than cruising along at 35k feet). It was never about electronic interference...it was about the government trying to game things so passengers made the "right" decisions from the government's point of view.

112 CAIRO (AP) -- An Egyptian court has banned the Muslim Brotherhood group and ordered its assets confiscated in a dramatic escalation of a crackdown by the military-backed government against supporters of the ousted Islamist president Mohammed Morsi. Egypt state TV said the court issued its ruling on Monday. The Brotherhood was outlawed for most of its 85 years in existence. But after the 2011 ouster of autocrat Hosni Mubarak, it was allowed to work openly, formed a political party and rose to power in a string of post-Mubarak elections. In March, it registered as a recognized non-governmental organization. The ruling, which can be appealed, opens door for authorities to track down the group's elaborate network of social services, dealing a deadly blow to its pillars of grass-root support. They should not be deported if:
They are legal citizens
Have a green card
Have a work visa
Are not here illegally
Have followed the laws that are in place regarding immigration.

No need to deport anyone if they are here legally.  We are a nation of laws.

"innocent"

True, but their definition of innocent is not one you would like.  Just one example.  After the ayat which is always quoted by western  politicians, 5.32, the next one say anyone who causes "corruption in the land" should have a hand and the opposite foot cut off.  Two examples, sorry, there are about three verses which say to attack the neck or head.

The leftist hothouse has announced an event entitled “Real Talk: A Dialogue about Internalized Racism” that is “open to people of color only.” The brochure explaining the event states: “Conversations about race in the U.S. mostly focus on race relations between white communities and people of color. However, people of color are also prone top [sic] internalize racist messages about their own community, and about other races/ethnicities/people of color. This conversation allows people of color to come together and examine how we may have accepted racist attitudes toward other racial groups and our own racial/ethnic communities, and move towards healing and mutual respect. In order to create a safe space, this program is open to people of color only. A similar conversation for white students, faculty and staff is planned for the spring semester.” The brochure also notes that dinner will be provided. “Please contact Amit Taneja for more information (ataneja@hamilton.edu).” The discussion is scheduled to take place on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 4:15 p.m. at the school’s Bristol Center (named for the co-founder of global biopharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers Squibb). It was pushed to the margins by a campaign that has involved U.S. Special Operations troops as well as African forces mobilized largely by Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia and Burundi."

We're going to try to take him in tonight or tomorrow night (our vet is open until 11P) to see what's wrong. Of course, "what's wrong" is that he's a large dog pushing 14 years old. Time is not, as they say, on his side. Then, this morning, we find out that a little girl- a friend of my son's- has died from the brain cancer she's been fighting for the last two years. My AP English teacher was a Hamilton alum.  Great teacher, personally a liberal to a fault but he certainly didn't try to indoctrinate anyone.  He also ran the gifted program, before it got deep-sixed by administration (budget, I think), he ran what was basically a study-hall for gifted students across grade levels where it was more often than not just free-wheeling discussions about life philosophy, evolution, whatever.  Met him for drinks once after college, when he was nearing retirement, and we just shot the sh*t drinking beer and scotch.

Anyway, I think my teacher would be appaled by that b.s. event at his alma mater.

First, I had the joy and privilege of explaining to the wee baby lawyer who rents office space from us that, yes, he did screw up big time by missing a deadline by a day. Welcome to a big grown up job where ooops has negative consequences for people besides yourself. Thing the second, I like my boss. I do. He's a good man and he treats us well and he's been moving heaven and Earth to keep this place going. That being said, I'm going to throttle him. You know, if he's going to tell a client to meet us for a hearing at a time that's a half an hour later than the time I told the client, he could, maybe, just maybe, tell *me*. *wheezes and clutches chest* No, I wasn't sitting here completely losing my mind that you were going to be late for court and that the client forgot about the hearing entirely. What gave you that idea? Other than me freaking the hell out, I mean. *wheezes more*

191 Great hymns of the faith-"Once to Every Man and Nation"-(Comes the moment to decide). This once popular hymn has been excised from some of the denominational hymnals including, I believe, the Presbyterian and Methodist Hymnals. The music combined with the powerful Welsh hymn music sends chills down my spine. Music from the London Philharmonic Choir. Magnificent: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U21b6h8g7PM James Russell Lowell(1819-1891) was a son of a Unitarian minister in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was an abolitionist, and one of many Americans who opposed the Mexican War. The annexation of Texas, adding a new and large slave-holding state, inspired Lowell to a poem which actually contains more verses than this: As Denis Hancock, Christian, scout leader and outdoorsman notes in his website, "Reformed Angler""" Ironically, the aftermath of the Mexican War and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo resulted in California joining the Union as a free state. The Mexican War was also where many future generals from North and South would learn lessons that would be put to use 15 years or so later, when the Civil War would tear this country apart far more effectively than the Mexican War did. It seem to be an appropriate for many choices (more than one actually) which have and do face our nation. The words: Once to every man and nation, Comes the moment to decide, In the strife of truth with false-hood, For the good or evil side; Some great cause, some great decision, Offering each the bloom or blight, And the choice goes by forever, 'Twixt that darkness and that light. Then to side with truth is noble, When we share her wretched crust, Ere her cause bring fame and profit, And 'tis prosperous to be just; Then it is the brave man chooses, While the coward stands aside, Till the multitude make virtue, Of the faith they had denied. Though the cause of evil prosper, Yet the truth alone is strong: Though her portion be the scaffold, And upon the throne be wrong, Yet that scaffold sways the future, AND, BEHIND THE DIM UNKNOWN, STANDETH GOD WITHIN THE SHADOW, KEEPING WATCH ABOVE HIS OWN.

Whoah Whoah Whoah here.

The NYT and Gabe both buried the lead here on the healthcare thing.  It's not just that they're giving you less options, the NYT article notes that they're specifically skipping over "major medical centers.

So, patient's are just being left with "less" choice, it's entirely arguable they're being left with "worse" choice.

(Yeah Yeah, we could have a giant discussion about the waste and possible fraud that results from these behemoth medical centers, and it's one that needs to be had.  But LIVs don't know that, and frankly, in some, probably many cases the major medical center is going to provide you better overall care, especially for complex cases.)

If you are not supposed to be burdened beyond your ability, then is seems to me that cancer should not exist.

And expose you to more resistant organisms and potentially catastrophically bad nursing.

Good community hospitals are a wonderful resource, mostly because they keep people out of the medical centers!

I'm not surprised that a parent spoke up.  I used to live in Hendersonville and still keep up with things going on there.  The school system and local government have a rough few months here lately with revelations that something along the lines of $1m from liquor taxes intended for the schools cannot be accounted for.  This has put both local government and the schools under a great deal of scrutiny.

225 If you are not supposed to be burdened beyond your ability, then is seems to me that cancer should not exist. That passage (not to be too pedantic) is regarding temptation to sin. It has nothing to do with your physical health- else any terminal disease would also be "burdened beyond your ability." It's weird, but I can look at Job for some comfort, here. Life ain't fair, and we're not the ones who set the foundations of the earth. But God still loves us, and it hurts His heart to see this continue. I can only Believe that He has a reason. Second lesson of the Book of Job- When your friends are in pain, it's not your job to look for reasons why or give them advice; it's simply to surround them with love. I don't know the little girl's family, but I'll be praying. And I hope their friends and Christian family surround them with love.

Ok, then let's take abortion off the table.  Your choices are: carry to full term and keep the baby or carry the baby to full term and give to a loving family through adoption.  After all, it isn't a loss of choice to have fewer choices.

233 I hate it when some asshole gets on his/her cell phone when they're sitting near me on the train and if that happens on a plane I will probably not react well. That used to bug the crap out of me until I learned why from some article about ten years ago. The problem is that we build in cues when talking that signal, "I'm done giving my piece of input, now it's your turn to give yours." Since you hear only one side of the conversation, you subconsciously are nagged by the idea that it's your turn to say something. I don't know why learning that helped me, but it did. I can tune out one-sided conversations. Hell, I don't even know if the reason given is true.

Posted by: Hrothgar at September 23, 2013 09:17 AM (XdnQT) Being a person of faith, I've always taken that to mean that God never gives more than one can handle to those in God's care. (Assuming if you aren't His, you aren't ascribing the giving to Him) However, if one is in God's care, God is actually doing the handling and He can take on quite a bit more than we. It becomes necessary at that point to stop trying to handle it ourselves and allow God to do it. Easier said than done.

Right, I get it.

And we could have an entire discussion on the utilization of medical resources, emergent, urgent, can wait, etc. (although good luck finding anything within 50 miles of me that *isn't* a medical center, but this town is weird.)

Iatrogenic infections, over utilization of hospitals, etc. etc. etc.

And I'm very willing to have this discussion.

OR

We could latch on to this, like the democrats would if it helped there case and ride it as far as it will go.  I'd prefer this choice as the starting gambit.

(I'm actually very much open to, and tepidly in favor of a two/multi-tiered medical system.  We have a multi-tiered everything else from clothing, to food, to housing to transportation.  It's not a prima facie bad thing, despite what some would say.  What I am opposed to is a two tiered medical system designed by a pitiful attempt at a command economy.  Under ObamaCare people will no longer be able to choose "higher deductible, more choice of providers" which I think is a fair tradeoff, nah instead they get told "This, this is your option.")

239 Well, in Kenya they are cutting off hands and disfiguring faces. So the Quran is not really going to help us out of this one. Posted by: Beagle at September 23, 2013 08:19 AM (sOtz/) I posted yesterday the demographics of Kenya (84% Christian, of which 54% Protestant). Kenyan minority Muslims are SUNNI (Wahhabi terrorist) concentrated populations holding majority demographics in Kenya's north eastern and coastal Provinces. The Kenyan North Eastern Province prior to WWI was the southern portion of Sunni Jubaland which the British divided in half, awarding northern Jubaland to Italy renamed Somalia. The British incorporated southern Sunni Jubaland into Kenya, renamed the current NW Province for Colonial British Empire. Prior to that point, Kenya's identity was Christian without any significant Muslim interference. But since conjoining Sunni Jubaland/Somalians into Kenya, there has been civil strife and civil wars and terrorism ever since. The British did global Identities no favors after WWI, redrawing traditional borders, insuring the augmentation of perpetual strife. And as for the elitist/eugenicist early 20th Century alliance with barbarous Wahhabi Sunnis, again, Britain's leadership with the USA in tow is proving the downfall of our democratic Constitutional Republic, the FIRST Republic since the ancient fell back to authoritarians. The first US White House Counter-Terrorism Chief was Steven Pieczenik, M.D., psychiatry who served FIVE POTUS administrations. It was Pieczenik who negotiated the release of our hostages with the revolutionary Iranian new government during Carter's CIA/Embassy fubar that assumed no hostilities would actually touch US officials. Pieczenik reminds Americans that despite media hype for their own profits, the US Embassy bureaucrats taken hostage were humanely cared for, were NOT tortured, and were released unharmed. THAT of itself illustrates the huge distinction between the universal barbaric Wahhabi terrorism conducted by Sunni against the rest of the world, and the civilized Persian/Shiia Muslims. Whatever else he is, Webster Tarpley is a historian above reproach. He made the point that in recent centuries, Iran has never conducted a military invasive conquest. THAT of itself illustrates the absolute distinction between the Persian/Shiia demanding its own independent Identity from the Saudi/Sunni which has zero tolerance for ANYTHING but its own Wahhabi Global Caliphate. Consider again the colossal mistake vs. humanity AND civilization caused by the British insistence to shatter the Ottoman Empire AFTER the Caliphate had already reformed completely; all people regardless of gender, ethnicity or religion were of equal status throughout the Empire; all enjoyed equal rights under the law which itself was Constitutional, not fundamentalist or authoritarian; all enjoyed equal rights to purchase property and conduct business enterprise without penalization based on Identity. Our own US history with nationalism is hypocritical no thanks to politicians and a public "educated" by official propaganda, a public "trusting" politicians to be honest. Remember Wilson's futile US Military intervention in Russia's own civil war. Consider Eisenhower who campaigned/won on the platform to get the US out of the UN/Korean War; only to launch a series of interventionist exploits including AJAX robbing Iranians of their own sovereign status and democratically elected Republic governance, installing such Monarchies throughout the ME to favor the growing identity of the US-global corporatism (that has us all bound as slaves today). Unfortunately for too many people around the world including the US citizenry, our own government launched its anti-communist Domino War Games, all the while revising US Constitutional Governance into Authoritarianism. Indeed, "Identity" is the common ground, either for global stability by mutual respect, or for global instability by invasive wars to monopolize the world. Consider carefully the Iranian President's Op-Ed for Americans to read. Most of us haven't a clue except for what we're fed by media motivated for profit and monopoly vs. accuracy. It isn't as if Iran or Russia are the bff of the USA. However, it would be foolish to think that the Saudis are allies of the USA. And only idiots swallow what D.C. serves the public. Détente

What? Let the market control pricing and choice?

You're preaching to the choir.

Probably impossible, but it's a nice thought.

Ending corporate tax deductions for health benefits is probably the best shot we have, and even that is a tough fight.

Agreed! I'd even call that a good idea, we should send it to Obama then point out that good ideas have been suggested, he's just ignoring them.

(I'd only want that deduction ended though as part of greater tax overhaul, if we just end it, it'll just be more money for the progtards to spend.  I'm even up for treating health benefits as "income" on the employee side of the ledger, or at the very least letting people who buy privately deduct it equivalently.)

Certainly one of the root problems is the misguided idea that health care is a right. Just like housing is a right.

sinking huge amounts of capital into those two is a terrible investment, if the goal is to increase growth.

When the right finally gets around to crafting a solution to the healthcare problem, it needs to include the elimination of hundreds of regulations that limit what nurses can do in lieu of the doctor's guild.

A free market solution relies on making things as efficient as possible.
