Happy Tuesday.

The EPA's new coal-fired power plant regulation contains this curious claim: "The EPA anticipates that the proposed EGU New Source GHG Standards will result in negligible CO2 emission changes, energy impacts, quantified benefits, costs, and economic impacts by 2022."

Here's what happens in the Senate between now and a shutdown. Under Senate rules, the earliest that the House could get a CR back from the Senate is Sunday -- assuming Sens. Cruz and Lee don't stop up the process. That would give the House exactly one day to act before a shutdown occurs.

Vandals torched a statue of President Reagan in a Southern California park.

NYTimes Supreme Court reporter Adam Liptak has an interesting piece on web links in Supreme Court decisions. It turns out almost half of the links Justices put in their opinions don't lead anywhere anymore or lead to, ahem, a bit of amusement.

31 Sierra Club, and other insane lefties go after coal because, apparently, that's what insane lefties do.  If you listen to them (and unfortunately I have had to), they really have nothing in particular to complain about.  The plants send up smoke.  Which is dirty.  And has chemicals... CHEMICALS!! in it. 

Nothing credible in terms of what the effects are, but  they are sometimes very good at getting people fired up (see what I did there?) about it, so they can enforce regulations, or shut down plants.

Overall, the intent  appears to be to get us all  (and by all I mean many many fewer of us)  back to mud huts and caves.  I can't see  any other possible conclusion.

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.  Today, appropriately enough, IÂ’ve got a Ronaldus Maximus story.  It comes from a 1966 issue of Time, so caveat emptor, though I think the Luces were still in control then and trying to keep it an objective magazine.

 

 

Anyway, the story goes that the writer William Faulkner was standing with fellow writer Stephen Longstreet at the gates of the Warner Brothers studio, waiting for their car.  The two were working on a picture called Stallion Road, which, though they tried to make it a cut above average, was still a B picture at heart.

 

 

“Who’s going to star in this?” Faulkner asked.

 

 

“A horse,” snorted Longstreet.

 

 

“I mean human.”

 

 

“Ronald Reagan.”

Stallion Road did fairly well (as it should have, since the movie was originally scheduled to star Bogart and Bacall), but not everyone liked it.  Faulkner, having seen the movie, sent a short note to Longstreet: “If youÂ’re a horse, youÂ’ll like the picture.”

Instead of arguing the merits of taxing and spending more or less on each individual item, it makes more sense to change the incentives.

An insurrection would be unlikely to turn out well.  If we could win a civil war, we could win an election.  As you point out, the most likely organizing entity for resistance has already been subverted by the enemy.



As Lenin demonstrated in 1917, a small disciplined and well organized group can beat a large mob with guns and good intentions.  When I look at our side I don't see a lot of organization.  When I look at them I see ruthless discipline and world class discipline.  The GOP is merely an organization that exists to transfer donations into the bank accounts of millionaire consultants who don't care about or even know what matters to you.  They have already secured their places in the Hunger Games society that is being built.

Chi-Town, I don't think you understand what Cruz, Paul, et al are trying to accomplish if you call it futile.  The first step was outright repeal, which is the ultimate goal.  That will not pass the Senate, so we fell back to defund, which does decrease government spending.  The regulations are still there, but if there's no funding for enforcement some people will ignore the requirements and will likely be absolved of wrongdoing when it is eventually repealed.  Plus, if there is no funding, then more people will feel more pain and put even more pressure on their Congresscritters and Senators to repeal the thing.  It's no more futile than the Leftists fighting their battles back in the 50s--you fought this battle not to win it now but to set up the future victory.  Anyone who dismisses this battle in the Senate now as futile has acceded to continuing to just roll over for the Leftists.  If you're not willing to fight for every hill, you're of minimal use to the cause.

Ok.  So the Republican leadership's strategy is to basically play ball with the Democrats without extracting any real concessions until the Republicans have the presidency, a majority in the house, and a majority (if not a supermajority) in the Senate.

Does anyone know what their plan to get control of the presidency, the House, and the Senate is?  Because I sure don't.  They almost act as if it is a natural occurrence, which of course it isn't. 

The amazing thing to me is that they completely ignore 2006, 2008, and 2010.  In each of those elections, one party made significant moves, not by being the "let's reach out and tell mr. 51% that we are just like him" but by having a clear agenda and convincing the country to come along.  Heck, it doesn't even have to be a huge agenda - 2006 and 2010 were both along the lines of - "we will do everything in out power to frustrate the current administration."

Cynical and corrupt? Assuredly so.

When a company decides they aren't going to offer  qualifying  health insurance as an employment benefit any longer  (whether because their existing plans don't meet Obamacare standards or the company just doesn't want to deal with the headaches any longer)....yeah, people pretty much get forced into the exchanges.

Wait - you could say that the FFs know man is a flawed creature, therefore created the system of checks and balances, gave us the Bill of Rights, and in all ways attempted to set up a system of government to preserve freedom rather than destroy it.  You'd be right, but the fatal flaw goes deeper than that.

They tried. It's the closest thing to a perfect system that has ever existed.

Contemporaries of the time knew that a moral populace was the assumption upon which all of the Constitution rests.  I believe that the FFs knew very well that the system they created would one day fail.

The Constitution's core weakness is that it is a "gentlemen's pact" that means next to nothing when the nation is no longer populated with "gentlemen."  There are no consequences for wrongdoing, there are no checks and balances when everything is equally corrupt.

The treasure of the American people, the accumulated toil of those who worked and bled to make the US great - well, that's been busted open like a pinata, and now it's a mad scramble to get as much of the candy as possible before its all gone.

And the gentlemen?  They get to stand in the back and cry while the bigger kids push them out of the way.

Or, they can pick up the stick and start swinging.

I see your point, however  I never condoned nor approved what has happened to our Republic over the course of my  lifetime. I'm particularly  peeved at the people  I  voted for lying to me, for saying one thing to get themselves  elected, and then entering office and doing   the opposite (Dondi, I'm looking at you).

 

I've gotten the feeling that  I've  been set up by a corrupt  political   machine  that   deliberately goes against  my interests   and   what the country stands for and then turns   around and points  a finger at me and says, "Well, YOU voted for this"  when I did nothing of the sort.

As to fighting on this hill--I'm not saying we must die on it.  But I am saying you must be willing to fight, and make your enemy bleed, on every hill, because short of a Second American Revolution or a complete political philosophy paradigm shift in the LIVs, the long game is the only way we can truly take this country back, and you can't win the long game if you don't show up to play.

I absolutely agree.  I also think that the Founding Fathers and many other contemporaries (such as Tytler) knew this was a doomed endeavor, but they wanted to forestall the inevitable as long as possible.

Whereas the F-15 has apparently shot down more than 100 enemy aircraft, with no losses from enemy aircraft....

 

It seems the Russian fighter-planes have killed more Russian pilots and spectators at air-shows than the people they were designed to guard against(American pilots in F-15s)....

I've heard the same statistics elsewhere.  I can't speak for F-15s in foreign air forces, but no American Air Force pilot has been shot down in air-to-air combat since Korea, F-15 or otherwise.  I don't know about helicopter pilots, but I'm guessing the answer holds for that as well.

Not only did they use lethal force, they    did it WRONG    and    the poor thing had to be euthanized.  

 

If the dog was known in the neighborhood, who   called the cops?   If it was "on the loose"    why    were the cops clustered around the woman's house when she got home, not somewhere down the street?       Does it count as being "on the loose" if the animal is in its own    yard, which is all I can assume?       How many cops are required to   take down a dog?  WHY were cops    the responding officers in the first place?  Why not animal control?     Just WTF?

278 I'm not sure if what some are advocating is more integration of religion into state governments, but if that's the idea, I'm opposed to that. I live in a state where I'm in the vast minority and where the boundaries between religious life and work & politics are very blurred already. I can't imagine it going well if they were eliminated altogether. But even more importantly, the willingness of some religions - especially Islam - to trample the rights of women, gays, and other minorities is so opposed to the American way that I would not stand for any state becoming an Islamic one. I would go to a new civil war over that. So although I appreciate the frustration many feel about how progressives have twisted (or invented, depending on your POV) the separation of Church and State, I'd rather err on the side of keeping the line between them as bright as possible. YMMV.

292 If the dog was well-known in the neighborhood, my guess is that it was perpetually out of its yard and off-leash, like many around my neighborhood. My dogs are walked, on-leash, several times a week. They spend most of their time in our house, going out to our fenced yard to do their business but not spending hours on end out there. So my dogs - which are distinctive-looking (collies) - are not "well-known" in my neighborhood. In my experience, owners who let their dogs run around off-leash consistently underestimate the intimidation and threat-level their own dogs present. They pass off charging behavior as big nothingburgers. It's very irresponsible and unfair to both the neighborhood and the dogs themselves when something like this happens.

Lutheran Services may have their hearts in the right place, but the road to hell is paved with good intentions.   We have a shitload of Somalis and Sudanese here in NH, and up in Maine and in VT.  They come to this country, get about a month of     counseling to help them integrate, then they're on their own.    I guarantee if you could look at the demographic makeup of the welfare roles here in NH, a solid 1/3 of the people on it would be African refugees.   And what else are they going to do?  They don't speak the language.  They have few if any marketable skills.    

 

You know what that does?  It creates silos.  Instead of trying to become part of the new country and culture in which they find themselves, which is hard and slow,   they instead remain insular   and separate from their new home.  It's easier to stay in your self-imposed    neighborhood   boundaries,    where people speak your language and understand your values and share your history.    

 

But   you're still     going to face the problems of everyday life in America.  You're going to have all the incumbent social ailments that    are associated with a poverty-stricken environment   in an otherwise wealthy nation.    You've got lots of young men and women who are caught between their homeland's insular culture and their new home's     promises -- as seen on TV and in other media -- and find themselves in a no-man's-land.   They're not content with their current situation, but they're not equipped with the skills or   knowledge   to    enable them to   succeed beyond    their   social and cultural confines.     In America you really can pull yourself up from the bootstraps, but if you didn't grow up here and don't KNOW that, you're not going to see it as an option for you.

 

So just like    other youth in poor urban slums and ghettoes, they    seek out something that makes them feel empowered.   In Chicago it's street gangs and thug culture.  In more rural areas it's   cliques    and family feuds    and   bands of bullying jerks  (at least that was MY experience).   In Somali and     Sudanese     neighborhoods   in America's cities,   it's Islamist    jihadism.     

 

And people are SURPRISED that we have hotbeds of Al Shahbab Islamists in this country?   In the upper mid-west and here in New England?    

 

These are the dangerously naive people who are going to get us all killed.

The first Thunderbirds I saw were F-100 Super Sabres!  That would have been mid 50s-ish.  One of the soloes did a thing where he flew down the runway at about 50 feet and less than 100 knots, I swear.  He had the nose way up to keep it in the air, and he rocked the wings while blipping the afterburner on and off!  The F-100 burner was either on or off, nothing in between.

 

Holy shit, can you imagine them doing that today?
