— Gabriel Malor Happy Tuesday.
The EPA's new coal-fired power plant regulation contains this curious claim: "The EPA anticipates that the proposed EGU New Source GHG Standards will result in negligible CO2 emission changes, energy impacts, quantified benefits, costs, and economic impacts by 2022."
Here's what happens in the Senate between now and a shutdown. Under Senate rules, the earliest that the House could get a CR back from the Senate is Sunday -- assuming Sens. Cruz and Lee don't stop up the process. That would give the House exactly one day to act before a shutdown occurs.
Vandals torched a statue of President Reagan in a Southern California park.
NYTimes Supreme Court reporter Adam Liptak has an interesting piece on web links in Supreme Court decisions. It turns out almost half of the links Justices put in their opinions don't lead anywhere anymore or lead to, ahem, a bit of amusement.

We must kill coal now to accomplish nothing in the next 10 years to decrease emissions of a natural substance with a negligable effect on global warming, because Gaia demands it.

Nothing credible in terms of what the effects are, but they are sometimes very good at getting people fired up (see what I did there?) about it, so they can enforce regulations, or shut down plants.
Overall, the intent appears to be to get us all (and by all I mean many many fewer of us) back to mud huts and caves. I can't see any other possible conclusion.

I'm no Vic, but on this day in history in 1969, the Chicago Seven went on trial. Yet somehow since then, it's American culture that's been prosecuted endlessly.
Also, some dude named George Washington signed the Judiciary Act of 1789 that established the Supreme Court as a tribunal of 6 justices and nominated John Jay to be the first Chief Justice.

Vandals torched a statue of President Reagan in a Southern California park.
I'd say torch a Barack Obama Boulevard in return, but how could you tell?
Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. Today, appropriately enough, I’ve got a Ronaldus Maximus story. It comes from a 1966 issue of Time, so caveat emptor, though I think the Luces were still in control then and trying to keep it an objective magazine.
Anyway, the story goes that the writer William Faulkner was standing with fellow writer Stephen Longstreet at the gates of the Warner Brothers studio, waiting for their car. The two were working on a picture called Stallion Road, which, though they tried to make it a cut above average, was still a B picture at heart.
“Who’s going to star in this?” Faulkner asked.
“A horse,” snorted Longstreet.
“I mean human.”
“Ronald Reagan.”
Faulkner puffed on his pipe for a little while before saying, “I don’t know. Back home, we’d run him for public office.”
“Why?”
Faulkner thought a little longer. “An actor,” he finally said, “now has to be the part he’s playing, but this boy is too much of everything and none of it settles down. You can’t go too wrong in politics going from no place to nothing.”
Stallion Road did fairly well (as it should have, since the movie was originally scheduled to star Bogart and Bacall), but not everyone liked it. Faulkner, having seen the movie, sent a short note to Longstreet: “If you’re a horse, you’ll like the picture.”
HereÂ’s a still of Reagan and Smith: http://tinyurl.com/nu2ah6w
Hope you all have a wonderful day.

What does that even mean? I mean, the plain English interpretation of that is this won't change anything at all, so, what? It's a bureaucratese admission that the EPA is doing this for shits and giggles?

"Tax, spend, vote, tax, spend, vote.
On and on. More and more. Forever."
The way things are organized now, there is no incentive to do anything differently.
Instead of arguing the merits of taxing and spending more or less on each individual item, it makes more sense to change the incentives.

Let this moment be emblazoned on our memory forever. McConnell and Cornyn are whipping Republican votes against Cruz in the Senate to protect Obamacare. The GOP has shown its true colors in fighting for the big government takeover of family health decisions. McConnell, Cornyn, Obama, Clinton, and the GOP establishment. They all want the same thing: to throw American freedom into the abyss.
Let the Republican Party die on the vine.
Let the Tea Party rise and take its place and become America's party of freedom.

An insurrection would be unlikely to turn out well. If we could win a civil war, we could win an election. As you point out, the most likely organizing entity for resistance has already been subverted by the enemy.
As Lenin demonstrated in 1917, a small disciplined and well organized group can beat a large mob with guns and good intentions. When I look at our side I don't see a lot of organization. When I look at them I see ruthless discipline and world class discipline. The GOP is merely an organization that exists to transfer donations into the bank accounts of millionaire consultants who don't care about or even know what matters to you. They have already secured their places in the Hunger Games society that is being built.

Redistribution really is just the start of it though. You turn the tables, the haves become the have-nots, but it's not like anybody expects the already downtrodden to rise. History is too clear on that point.
Any result of the constant conflict will inevitably include the worst outcomes for those who are already on the bottom.
So it's about the elites being brought down, to be replaced by a new elite. With many many fewer humans around to cause problems for the new Grand Poobahs.

He's right, of course. Obamacare can't be "defunded". If you guys had bothered to read the many articles posted here over the past few days, you would understand that. It is a futile fight.
The regulatory pieces of Obamacare are probably the worst part and most harmful to our economy. Insurance companies must start meeting those requirements on Jan 1st, no matter what. ALL health plans WILL change Jan 1st to meet ACA requirements. Nothing changes with the so-called "defunding" hissy fit playing out in DC.

Chi-Town, I don't think you understand what Cruz, Paul, et al are trying to accomplish if you call it futile. The first step was outright repeal, which is the ultimate goal. That will not pass the Senate, so we fell back to defund, which does decrease government spending. The regulations are still there, but if there's no funding for enforcement some people will ignore the requirements and will likely be absolved of wrongdoing when it is eventually repealed. Plus, if there is no funding, then more people will feel more pain and put even more pressure on their Congresscritters and Senators to repeal the thing. It's no more futile than the Leftists fighting their battles back in the 50s--you fought this battle not to win it now but to set up the future victory. Anyone who dismisses this battle in the Senate now as futile has acceded to continuing to just roll over for the Leftists. If you're not willing to fight for every hill, you're of minimal use to the cause.

It's out on DVD, though I'm afraid I don't have a link. But (in the interest of self-whoring), if you're interested in the Ripper murders, there's no better book out there than Philip Sugden's The Complete History of Jack the Ripper.
And, about 10-odd years ago now, I co-authored a book called The News From Whitechapel: Jack the Ripper in the "Daily Telegraph." It's an annotated collection of most of the major news stories during the murders, with five essays on different aspects of the crime. Really for the specialist, but I might as well plump for some royalties.

I thoroughly dumped my FB about a month ago and don't miss it one bit. But, since so many blogs, etc., use FB as a comment system, I still get to behold the brilliance of my fellow Americans. Just yesterday, I read someone's FB comment on a story related to the gov't shutdown re: Bammycare. The commenter stated that the only reason the GOP was doing this was because Obama was black. These idiots really believe this.

Ok. So the Republican leadership's strategy is to basically play ball with the Democrats without extracting any real concessions until the Republicans have the presidency, a majority in the house, and a majority (if not a supermajority) in the Senate.
Does anyone know what their plan to get control of the presidency, the House, and the Senate is? Because I sure don't. They almost act as if it is a natural occurrence, which of course it isn't.
The amazing thing to me is that they completely ignore 2006, 2008, and 2010. In each of those elections, one party made significant moves, not by being the "let's reach out and tell mr. 51% that we are just like him" but by having a clear agenda and convincing the country to come along. Heck, it doesn't even have to be a huge agenda - 2006 and 2010 were both along the lines of - "we will do everything in out power to frustrate the current administration."

Something that can't be said too frequently:
Obamacare is a "trainwreck", to be sure, but as with every trainwreck there are winners and losers.
There are a considerable number of American corporations whose top execs realize that (a) they personally aren't going to be touched by Obamacare, being able to go anywhere in the world for top-notch health care, and (b) Obamacare will be absolutely wonderful for their bottom line, letting them further socialize costs while privatizing profits.
Example: old-line old-time previusly paternalistic firms which had previously offered their retirees gold-plated medical care plans can instead pull the football away, Lucy van Pelt style, and dump those hapless retirees into the Obamacare exchanges. Which will be far inferior to the previous company-paid plans, but which will also save those companies uncounted billions in retiree health care costs.
Conspiratorial? No. Hard cold business reality.
Cynical and corrupt? Assuredly so.
Got any examples? Sure. IBM. Which just last week announced its plans to do precisely what I just described. Plenty of other firms to follow.
When you see sad old highest-bidder political hacks like McConnell and Cornyn quietly shilling for Obamacare, that's what is behind it. An already entrenched lobby for the trainwreck.

Surprised there are no prominent James Mason stories. He was an outcast from the Brit-exile H'wd community during and after WWII. Most either went home to "fight" or joined the anti-fascist cause. Mason was a pacifist, or said he was, and did nothing. He was very unpopular for that, for quite a while.

I don't believe the conspiracy nutters here who think Gabe exists solely to troll us. Accept that he's way to the left of most of the horde on social issues for selfish but certainly understandable reasons and just deal with it. He's also a DC-area lawyer, so the fact that he even has sympathy for any conservative causes, yet alone actually advocates for some of them, is a minor miracle in itself. You'll get your harder right fixes from DiT and DrewM, after all. I don't see constant flaming of CAC for his pro-weed tendencies, and there's certainly plenty of people on here who are not pro-weed.

A company can't "put" employees on Obamacare. Employees can choose to enroll in the exchanges, but they don't have to. And a company certainly can't force anyone into it.
------------
When a company decides they aren't going to offer qualifying health insurance as an employment benefit any longer (whether because their existing plans don't meet Obamacare standards or the company just doesn't want to deal with the headaches any longer)....yeah, people pretty much get forced into the exchanges.
Torquewrench has it pretty much correctly. Business is certainly not above lobbying government to get bennies for itself at the expense of others. In fact, it's legion.

Wait - you could say that the FFs know man is a flawed creature, therefore created the system of checks and balances, gave us the Bill of Rights, and in all ways attempted to set up a system of government to preserve freedom rather than destroy it. You'd be right, but the fatal flaw goes deeper than that.
They tried. It's the closest thing to a perfect system that has ever existed.
Contemporaries of the time knew that a moral populace was the assumption upon which all of the Constitution rests. I believe that the FFs knew very well that the system they created would one day fail.
The Constitution's core weakness is that it is a "gentlemen's pact" that means next to nothing when the nation is no longer populated with "gentlemen." There are no consequences for wrongdoing, there are no checks and balances when everything is equally corrupt.
The treasure of the American people, the accumulated toil of those who worked and bled to make the US great - well, that's been busted open like a pinata, and now it's a mad scramble to get as much of the candy as possible before its all gone.
And the gentlemen? They get to stand in the back and cry while the bigger kids push them out of the way.
Or, they can pick up the stick and start swinging.

Coco Chanel was disfavored for a short while due to her having spent WWII busily fucking half the Nazi generals in occupied Paris.
But of course it didn't take very long after the war for the rancid bitch to worm her way back into the limelight, and her very real and serious personal sins were promptly forgotten.
The thing about the entertainment and fashion communities is that since they're always about the Next New Thing, they thus have very short memories about the past. Intrinsically shallow and amnesiac.

I see your point, however I never condoned nor approved what has happened to our Republic over the course of my lifetime. I'm particularly peeved at the people I voted for lying to me, for saying one thing to get themselves elected, and then entering office and doing the opposite (Dondi, I'm looking at you).
I've gotten the feeling that I've been set up by a corrupt political machine that deliberately goes against my interests and what the country stands for and then turns around and points a finger at me and says, "Well, YOU voted for this" when I did nothing of the sort.

We need to invent something better.
The "good" religions are nearly universally pacifist, and the largest religion in the world relies on forgiveness as a doctrine.
Not a good recipe for a firm stance against corruption, because there's only one thing that the corrupt understand - the threat of force.

I'm calling the people who accuse Gabe of being a troll the conspiracy nutters. Because to accuse him of being a troll, you have to believe that ace is conspiring with him to let him troll, or is too stupid to recognize Gabe as a troll. Since I don't believe either of those to be the case, I don't believe Gabe is a troll either, and further that it is a little bit crazy to think otherwise.
As to fighting on this hill--I'm not saying we must die on it. But I am saying you must be willing to fight, and make your enemy bleed, on every hill, because short of a Second American Revolution or a complete political philosophy paradigm shift in the LIVs, the long game is the only way we can truly take this country back, and you can't win the long game if you don't show up to play.
Chi-town, it's clear we have irreconcilable differences on the way to handle Obamacare. I haven't heard you offer any solutions today, positive or otherwise, to the problem. I've made my case for what I think should be done and why, but if you're not behind fighting then you are at best a bystander, if not complicit in the slowly unfolding train wreck that is O-care.

Whereas the F-15 has apparently shot down more than 100 enemy aircraft, with no losses from enemy aircraft....
It seems the Russian fighter-planes have killed more Russian pilots and spectators at air-shows than the people they were designed to guard against(American pilots in F-15s)....

I've heard the same statistics elsewhere. I can't speak for F-15s in foreign air forces, but no American Air Force pilot has been shot down in air-to-air combat since Korea, F-15 or otherwise. I don't know about helicopter pilots, but I'm guessing the answer holds for that as well.

Outrage After Police Shoot ‘Well-Known Neighborhood Dog’
The Blaze: http://tinyurl.com/mkfepea
Neighbors in Valdese, N.C., are outraged after a police officer shot a “well-known neighborhood dog,” WBTV-TV reports. The dog later had to be euthanized due to its injuries.
The dogÂ’s owner, Holly Woody, said she arrived home on Sunday night and there were cop cars surrounding her property. What they told her next broke her heart.
“They said, ‘we had to shoot your dog,’ and my son started crying,” the woman said....
Police were reportedly responding to reports of a dog on the loose and say they found the animal aggressive...
Valdese Police Chief Jack Moss told the news station that his officers felt threatened by the dog and decided to use lethal force...
The dog did not bite or injure anyone before it was shot, according to the report.
Not only did they use lethal force, they did it WRONG and the poor thing had to be euthanized.
If the dog was known in the neighborhood, who called the cops? If it was "on the loose" why were the cops clustered around the woman's house when she got home, not somewhere down the street? Does it count as being "on the loose" if the animal is in its own yard, which is all I can assume? How many cops are required to take down a dog? WHY were cops the responding officers in the first place? Why not animal control? Just WTF?

The idea of Total Pacifism- you may never be violent ever- came from other traditions (Buddhism comes to mind, but I'm not sure of that).

And the idea that its a part of Christianity comes from the twisted view of Jesus being arrested in the garden and his telling his disciple to not try and defend him after already taking one of the soldiers ears off. Of course those who push this tend to ignore that Christ didn't seem to mind his disciples being armed.

The dogÂ’s owner, Holly Woody, said she arrived home on Sunday night and there were cop cars surrounding her property. What they told her next broke her heart
I wonder if she hates her parents.

My pinko aunt was probably in on that; she was pastor at an ELCA church in a crappy part of Mpls for awhile in the 90s, very multi-ethnic.
She's since moved to Canada, and I haven't talked to her much since she supported the recall of Scott Walker...while I was still living and paying taxes in WI.

I see it as a scenario where parents are concerned about an adult child's significant other being harmful, and they try to sit down and tell their concerns, but the adult child won't listen until consequences are felt from the decision. By then, significant harm may be done.
Consequence is the most powerful teacher on the planet. Even then, it doesn't work most of the time.
Fear of consequence is the greatest motivator.

...OTOH, I think proggs want to wipe out Judeo-Christian principals more than they want the State to be separate from Church--hell, I think they want the State to be the Church. But proggs encourage our schools and judiciary to push Islam, and force the various and sundry Gaia Worship liturgies and rituals upon us all (mandatory recycling, lightbulb ban, no-flow toilets, etc). Hardly a bright line there.

Lutheran Services may have their hearts in the right place, but the road to hell is paved with good intentions. We have a shitload of Somalis and Sudanese here in NH, and up in Maine and in VT. They come to this country, get about a month of counseling to help them integrate, then they're on their own. I guarantee if you could look at the demographic makeup of the welfare roles here in NH, a solid 1/3 of the people on it would be African refugees. And what else are they going to do? They don't speak the language. They have few if any marketable skills.
You know what that does? It creates silos. Instead of trying to become part of the new country and culture in which they find themselves, which is hard and slow, they instead remain insular and separate from their new home. It's easier to stay in your self-imposed neighborhood boundaries, where people speak your language and understand your values and share your history.
But you're still going to face the problems of everyday life in America. You're going to have all the incumbent social ailments that are associated with a poverty-stricken environment in an otherwise wealthy nation. You've got lots of young men and women who are caught between their homeland's insular culture and their new home's promises -- as seen on TV and in other media -- and find themselves in a no-man's-land. They're not content with their current situation, but they're not equipped with the skills or knowledge to enable them to succeed beyond their social and cultural confines. In America you really can pull yourself up from the bootstraps, but if you didn't grow up here and don't KNOW that, you're not going to see it as an option for you.
So just like other youth in poor urban slums and ghettoes, they seek out something that makes them feel empowered. In Chicago it's street gangs and thug culture. In more rural areas it's cliques and family feuds and bands of bullying jerks (at least that was MY experience). In Somali and Sudanese neighborhoods in America's cities, it's Islamist jihadism.
And people are SURPRISED that we have hotbeds of Al Shahbab Islamists in this country? In the upper mid-west and here in New England?
These are the dangerously naive people who are going to get us all killed.

I can't speak for that either. I know Israel, Japan, and Saudi Arabia are some of the biggest purchusers of F-15.
I was just suprised that most "Russian Kills" were scored by Russians... Poor design, improper maintenance, pilot error, whatever.....

Ed Anger,
North Vietnamese, or North Vietnamese marked warplanes? Oh, nevermind. I was talking about 4th Generation fighters.
BTW, when was the last time you went to Vietnam? I went last year. You know what I found? Vietnamese have the dirtiest toilets in the world. Dirtier than India or China X1000.
I saw sun-faded signs about promised construction projects. The signs were 5 years old.
I went to the Ho Chi Minh museum. You know one of the reasons he started the "revolution"? Because the French drank wine... How difficult is it to get a beer in Ho Chi Minh City?
Not
at
All.
I will say one thing nice about Vietnam.... The rats are friendly.

The first Thunderbirds I saw were F-100 Super Sabres! That would have been mid 50s-ish. One of the soloes did a thing where he flew down the runway at about 50 feet and less than 100 knots, I swear. He had the nose way up to keep it in the air, and he rocked the wings while blipping the afterburner on and off! The F-100 burner was either on or off, nothing in between.
Holy shit, can you imagine them doing that today?
Posted by: Ray Van Dune at September 24, 2013 08:02 AM (BaQuW)
And, the F-100 wasn't anybody's idea of a "nimble" handling airplane.

Glad I read the Newsbusters piece on Matthew Shepard and found out that a leading LGBT publication IS coveing the book, and that the author is gay.
Pretty much puts the lie to any crap about the motive for the censorship being concern for the sensibilities of the LGBT community, right?
Let's call a spade a spade - this is thought-control by the media, on behalf of Democrats, who need divisive issues to manipulate us with.
