FRIDAY!

Sen. Coburn came in for some heat this week from conservatives irritated that he hasn't signed on to Sen. Cruz's defund tactics. He's pushing back with this Q&A explaining why he is opposed.

The MRC had its annual gala last night, during which the audience voted on the media's most biased pronouncements over the year. I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. Twitchy has recap.

Links to last week's podcast are below the fold, along with some music. The new podcast should be up this afternoon, with guest David Burge aka Iowahawk. Have a great weekend.

1 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Friday, September 27, 2013.  On this day in 1903 the wreck of the old 97 occurred sparking a major CnW song.  As the song says, it was en route from Monroe, VA to Spencer, NC when it derailed outside of Danville, VA due to excessive speed going into a curve and plunged into a ravine.  The engineer was trying to makeup time from a late start.

3 Headline: Concerns mount over UN gun treaty that horseface just signed?  How about this, everyone said it was dead on arrival to begin with.  There is no concern, it will never be ratified. Besides that it is unconstitutional and would not hold up in court. And no, treaties do not override the Constitution.

43 For anyone who is even thinking of going to the Coburn link, let me save you the trouble "Simply put: we cannot defund or replace Obamacare completely until we have a Republican supermajority in the House and Senate that can override a Presidential veto. Even then, Dr. Coburn questions if we could obtain all 67 votes in the Senate needed to override a veto" So Coburn's "strategy" to defund Obamacare is to wait until Republicans either have the White House and say, 63 vote in the Senate, or until they have about 70 votes in the Senate. In a related article, Dr. Coburn says his plan to reduce the debt is to have Congress win Powerball.

53 In Negotiations 101 you present a dollar offer. Seller rejects and suggests higher number. You stall and stall, then present slightly higher number. Seller rejects and suggests higher number. This time you stall even longer and propose number half of previous higher number. It's part psychology... even if people may not consciously register the extrapolation of time and dollars, they know somehow in the recesses of their brain that more time is not going to equal more money. The House has to start getting serious about getting some negotiating skills. But it's not their money so what the fuck.

57 52 -

People tend to get rankled when you suggest they  not only don't want to defund Obamacare, but seem to be in support of it.

The alternative explanation is that you  dislike it so much, you're going to announce to the world that you are going to let it breeze through your legislature, because you didn't craft the legislation.

So when it collapses at some unforeseen point in  the future, you can point out that it's not your fault.  As if at that point in the future, the Dems, and the rest of your assorted enemies  in the media are going to suddenly declare how right you were all along.

It bothers some people when you actually write that down, because  it kinda sorta leaves only the two alternatives:  you are a complete idiot, or you really DO want this thing to be the way we deliver healthcare in this country.

66 The GOP is not necessarily stupid in its methods, per se. It does what it does because it too relies on big government for its bread, butter and existence. The stupidity is in trying to be merely a wing of the Democrat party and ignoring/despising a large swathe of the electorate - the conservatives. But then again, if you vote the way they want you to vote, then you are in favor of smaller government. Meaning less power and money.

However, this article contains some details about his life I didn't know (including that he was ordained at 40 and continued to serve even after his eye sight failed). John Newton was a mentor to the evangelical Christian William Wilberforce who was instrumental in stopping the slave trade in Britain, The last paragraph is the best of all-about God's grace towards us, The author of the article was an army chaplain for 26 years. I wonder how he would feel about the current restraints on army chaplains http://www.lectionary.org/HymnStories/Amazing%20Grace.htm And I just love this rendition by Mahalia Jackson. I t get chills when I hear her sing. She seems to feel the words so powerfully http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJg5Op5W7yw. Grace and peace and thank be to God for His amazing grace.

77 At this point I'm assuming people like Coburn are being obtuse deliberately. After all, he's generally a smart guy (with the worlds most annoying voice), so to not get the point must mean he chooses not to get the point. This isn't about "crafting good policy", you fool, its about taking up rhetorical arms against a tyrant. It's about recognizing the other side is out to undermine the entire basis of our Republic, that they don't give a shit about oaths to "protect and defend" the Constitution, only about getting their way. Fighting back is what Cruz did, and the popularity despite the sheer hopelessness of what he did evidences how desperate we are to find someone, anyone in DC who gets it.

91 Global Warming. I want to bring forward an incidental comment I found earlier this morning, posted at the end of the previous thread.

"In our study, we found that during the Late Cretaceous Period, when
carbon dioxide levels were around 1,000 ppm, there were no continental
ice sheets on Earth."
Science World Report
http://preview.tinyurl.com/n88zuzf

Don't just blythely skim over that comment. Ninety million years ago, carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere were higher than they are now. That means there was some naturally occurring process that injected CO2 into the atmosphere at a rate higher than the rate other naturally occurring processes were extracting it from the atmosphere.

Here and now, human activity is visible everywhere you look. Every hour of the day. When you are stuck in traffic, when you see huge construction equipment building yet another something., when you drive passed some industrial site with it's smoke stacks spewing water vapor into the air.  Psychologically, it's easy to believe that human activity is injecting CO2 into the atmosphere because you see so many other humans doing what they do. What you don't see are the other, naturally occurring processes that also inject CO2, whatever they may be.

The whole idea that man made global warming is occurring is fraudulent because there is undeniable evidence, accepted by the scientific community, that natural occurring cycles of cooling and warming have happened, repeatedly, over millions of years.

The fanatical leftist response is always 'yes, but' humans are contributing. It comes down to the arithmetic, the numbers, the math, and we don't know all the variables, nor can we accurately quantify them. Nor do we understand how those variables interact; the equations.

and none of this matters because it all comes down to what you believe. So I'm gonna go make pancakes.

He does state that Germany's (and Europe's) mindset was anti-semitic for nearly 1,000 years. Hence, it was very easy for ordinary Germans to participate in, if not be indifferent to, the mass murder of the Jews. If you want to understand what I mean by "mindset," look no further than the media, academia and culture in this country and its treatment of anyone and anything that does not agree with it lock, stock and barrel. Ace and others have spilled barrels of pixels on this very subject. In any case, Goldhagen's foolishness with Farrow in today's WSJ does not negate his scholarly work.

When Reagan came into a room, people stood: America just walked in. Does Mr. Obama bring that kind of mystique? "No," he said. "It's not like that."

144 I was at work yesterday and looked here at the blog when I had a late lunch. I read that there was a dustup, to say the least, between that twit Corker and Mike Lee & Ted Cruz. I watched it last night, and sent Corker an email and wrote that conservatives are happy to see some listen and fight against Obamacare and that we do not like moderates, in the age of TFG we need conservatives, people that are going to vote with the dems are not appreciated. I also wrote Corker that it is foolish to think that Cruz & Lee can get more attention by voting today because I have a job & canÂ’t possibly watch it. I wonder if heÂ’ll respond. I doubt he will. I have to call the chief of staff of my congress critter as Vendette suggested last week. I ordered a flag that was over the Capitol on June 15 and they charged me that day. I waited patiently & didnÂ’t receive it. I emailed CapuanoÂ’s office & man replied that it was on its way. That was late July. Today is September 27 and I still havenÂ’t gotten it. I emailed man early this month to say I want my $ back & he replied that he had requested a refund and confirmation. They have yet to credit my AmEx. Point of this is that they canÂ’t even get the flag order right and give me my money back. Can you imagine the government running healthcare? Next year I will order a flag from a retail store.

Watched a documentary called Homo Sapiens 1900 on Netflix about the eugenics movemnts prior to WW2 and thereafter. It was slow but eh-good because it showed a lot of the original footage and popular media of the day, and didn't flinch or cover up details of the movement in any country.

The USA portions were interesting and horrifying, particularly in the early years. It showed the climactic clip from The Black Stork http://is.gd/L7OoB8 where the bastard doctor refuses to even put a warming blanket on a newborn because he determines the baby is defective and should die - and, yes, it was a real newborn. They've been killing kids that way in Chicago for a hundred years, apparently.

In later years, the American eugenics movement - besides the horrors of PP and forced sterilization - turned itself into beauty contests and gold star-type award competitions for 'fit to breed' families, much more surface than the sinister versions of Germany and the USSR, but also more durable since once you see it you can tell its still everywhere.

152 Pat Buchanan has an awesome column about all this.  His idea is brilliant too, instead of doing these massive budgets, all or nothing, they should piecemeal out the whole budget.  Create a separate CR for DOD, another for education, another for social security, etc.  Would the Senate Dems and Obama refuse to fund one department because it lacked language that funded another?  If they did this they wouldn't be able to scare Republicans into supporting Obamacare over the issue of a shutdown.  For them to force a shutdown they'd have to vote down dozens of other CRs that have nothing to do with Obamacare.

155 WASHINGTON (AP) — This time, President Barack Obama says, he's not budging. This is the confrontational Obama, the "Make my day" president, betting Republicans blink to avoid a government shutdown or a first-ever default of the nation's debts.

Brave Sir Barry is so tough standing up to the Vichy Republicans.

In this round, however, the president and his aides maintain that when it comes to raising the government's borrowing authority and meeting its debt obligations, there's no bargaining.

"The entire world looks to us to make sure that the world economy is stable. You don't mess with that," Obama said Thursday. "And that's why I will not negotiate on anything when it comes to the full faith and credit of the United States of America."

Putting us further into debt. Another gutsy call.

170 Congress reaches new lows in latest budget battle

(CNBC) With lawmakers on the verge of putting the U.S. government out of business for the third time in as many years, the latest budget battle has veered even further off course than past efforts to drive the government off a fiscal cliff.

Five days before the current $4 trillion funding law expires, the discussion this week devolved into a 21-hour diatribe by Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz on the sweeping health-care law that begins providing coverage next month to millions of uninsured Americans.

214 A lot of comments about my Visa card.  I don't use it as a "credit card".  99.9% of the time it is only used in ordering stuff via the Internet and it is paid off as soon as the bill comes in. The other 0.1% of the time it is used at a restaurant or hotel but that is rare.

I could use my debit card for ordering on the internet but that is more dangerous than the credit card because in disputed billing cases you are limited in liability on a credit card to $50.  There is no limit on a debit card.  They can clean out your account and disappear.

If you mean post 73, it says the House Democrats agreed to it, not that they voted on it on December 24th.  I don't see anything anywhere that says they did that.

As far as I can tell, the actual vote on the senate bill in the house was in March 2010, which was what I thought.

260 I used to love fried okra when I was a kid.  Can't stand it now.

As for letters about insurance I got mine a few weeks ago.  They are switching their plan to a new company.  It is a company we used to have about 15 years ago that they dropped.  It was dropped because most of the healthcare providers in our area refused to accept their cards because they were so shitty about paying. They were even worse than BCBS.

The letter also said my premiums were going up again and coverage was going down as my catastrophic plan was no loner available due to Obamacare.

My old plan I paid the first $5K (both me and wifey) and then they paid 100% after that.  We usually hit that 5K in early February.

Posted by: Vic at September 27, 2013 05:18 AM (zZbNF)

262 Okra prep: Cut into thin disks. Dust lightly with flour to get a sticky surface. Coat with fine corn meal. Corn masa works even better. Fry the living fuck out of it. Most of the coating will fall off. Don't worry. When you can barely tell it was once green it is done. This produces fried okra that you will eat like popcorn. Nice, nearly charred taste and no slime. Otherwise okra is hog food.

"So what they are saying is that everyone should form a trust for their assets, buy "insurance" like this, and just prepare the bankruptcy forms in case you get hurt."

This is essentially the plan if you have assets to protect.

You can never go below zero, so owing 5 million more than you can pay is the same as owing $10 more than you can pay.  Take the lowest premium, trust in luck that you'll be healthy and if something goes wrong, declare bankruptcy.

Live in a house you rent from a trust.  Don't carry large balances in personal accounts.  Time to game the system.

@266 baldilocks

I think that is an effort at mythology building.  One piece of  landing gear (symbolism is important here)   actually flew and hit that building.  Rauf's apparent   idea is genius, take that as a sign from Allah that they should build there.   Then invite the mujahideen from overseas to make their hijra.

Here's the thing though. The Grassley Amendment was supposed to take care of this issue. I have zero belief that the Vitter Serious You Guys You Have To Follow The Law Amendment won't be executive ruled away as well. How is an unelected and unaccountable executive department handwaving away parts of a duly passed law not tyranny again?

312 230 I could use my debit card for ordering on the internet but that is more dangerous than the credit card because in disputed billing cases you are limited in liability on a credit card to $50. There is no limit on a debit card. They can clean out your account and disappear. You can put a limit on how much can be withdrawn on your debit card per day, to limit the damage from a lost or stolen card. I keep my withdrawable limit at 300.00 per day. I figure I'm going to notice (or be notified by MasterCard) if if my card is lost or stolen within 24 hours, so my max loss would be 300.00.

318 Cannot wait for the Breaking Bad finale. Trying to predict what's going to happen on BB is a losing game, but I saw one interesting theory on a BB fansite: Remember Jesse's little brother? We haven't seen him in a while. He has a near-genius IQ, he's no stranger to drugs, or at least to pot, and he's a devious little fucker. Fooling his parents into thinking he's the perfect kid. So, assuming Walt ends up dead and Jesse retired, Jesse's little bro and Brock team up as the new Heisenberg and Jesse, with Brock in the Jesse role. Final shot is of Jesse's brother putting on the Heisenberg hat. But who the fuck knows. All you know with this show is that you'll never guess right.

323 Coburn is just parroting the standard republican talking point that there's nothing they can do until there's a whole bunch of republicans in congress, in other words, his only concern is using Obamacare to get Republicans elected, not actually stopping Obamacare.

If Republicans did somehow get a supermajority somewhere down the road do you really think they actually get rid of Obamacare? If you do allow me to point to the income tax, social security, abortion and on and on. Republicans want to get elected, that's all they care about and they need those issues to get elected, they'll never do anything about them.

Posted by: booger at September 27, 2013 06:10 AM (xRDdL)

324 If the Democrats agreed with Republican defeatists that Obamacare would be funded without the CR, they'd vote for a CR that didn't fund Obamacare. And laugh. Since they absolutely refuse to, I conclude there's some damage to Obamacare from defunding it. Sure there are alternate sources of funding -- but how much they'd produce, and how they'd produce anything when the House forbade using federal resources to look for them, is totally unknowable. Title 18 United States Code Section 641 makes it a felony to convey federal money, property, or anything of value for another's use without authority. The punishment is 10 years imprisonment or a $10,000 fine or both. That's a crime only members of government can commit, and it smells impeachable to me. But I'm looking for a way to defeat the President and his gang, and Dr. Coburn isn't.

That's exactly it.

You know all those Republicans who have said obamacare is unconstitutional?

yeah.

See them fuckers following through?

Because if they really believed it was unconstitutional, then no Supreme Court ruling magically makes it constitutional, no vote by the legislature no matter how many in favor confers nothing.
The Founders meant for us to interpret the law, you know "We the People?"

And if the federal government insists on enforcing an unconstitutional law, then they--having sworn a fucking oath to uphold the Constitution!!--have a duty to declare the federal government is in a state of rebellion and that it has forfeited all legitimacy.

Instead, the cowardly bitches whine and moan.

So fuck them.

We will all have our piece and they can choose who they will stand with. Neither I nor the good Lord will forget.
