Hello, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.  Another day, another eight hours supporting the FSA. 

 

 

While I pass out the coffee and pastries (hereÂ’s some lox and bagels for you, J.J.; IÂ’ll take mine with caviar), here are a few short stories, with no real connecting thread:

 

 

Every actor, whether star, supporting player or day extra, knew the time would come when their careers would end.  But there were those whose time in front of the camera seemed as short as the burst of a shooting star, and they never could get over the loss.  One such was the great silent actor John Gilbert.  On the day he came to MGM to pick up his final check, he found carpenters already turning his dressing room into David O. SelznickÂ’s office.  “Please, gentlemen,” Gilbert sighed, “the corpse isnÂ’t even cold yet.”*


 

 

 

One of the early film pioneers, Sigmund “Pop” Lubin, made a great deal of money producing films for his string of nickelodeons, but he was never convinced that he was in the right business.  Looking over the books one day, he groused to a friend, “I was a fool to go into making movies instead of producing plays.  In the theater, an actor can run on stage and yell, ‘The ship has sunk with all on board!Â’  In the movies, you have to spend five thousand dollars to show the ship sinking.  And actors can get drowned!  And sue you!”

 

 

 

In her early days, the ethereal Loretta Young was known as something of a good-time girl (she even had an illegitimate daughter, fruit of an affair with Clark Gable), but by the time she shot Rachel and the Stranger with Robert Mitchum in 1948, her self-created image as a pure, chaste woman was complete.   Among her affectations at the time was a collection cup which she would bring to all of her sets.  If anyone in the company swore, they were expected to drop money in the cup.  A “hell” would cost you 25 cents, a “goddamn” 50 and so on, all the money going – ironically – to a home for unwed mothers. 

 

 

During one clinch with Young, Mitchum blew a line.  “Damn it!” he spat.  “ThatÂ’ll be a dollar, Bob,” Young piped up.  Mitchum stared at her for a moment, then pulled a sawbuck from his pocket.  “Go fuck yourself, Loretta,” he snarled, ramming the bill into the cup.**

 

 

 

And finally, a story about the director Michael Curtiz (Captain Blood, White Christmas).  He was always annoyed that filming had to stop for lunch: “What do you need lunch for?” he would grouse.  “A glass of milkÂ’s enough.  Breakfast, thatÂ’s it, when you get up.  No lunch.  Work, work!”  It so happened that one day he was shooting a scene at Malibu with about 350 extras, preparing for a motor launch to come up to the dock.  It was just a little after eleven when Curtiz stepped up to the microphone and called, “Send for the launch!”  Whereupon the extras, misunderstanding his thick Hungarian accent, all broke for lunch.  So, at ten minutes past eleven, 350 box lunches had to be passed out and Curtiz could only stand there, fuming impotently.

*a persistent legend concerning Gilbert is that Louis B. Mayer, long a foe of the actor, had sound technicians alter GilbertÂ’s voice in his talkie debut, His Glorious Night, making the great lover sound like Tiny Tim.  It isnÂ’t true.

52 MP4, I meant exactly what I said.  Bubonic is transmitted by fleas, attacks the lymph nodes.  Very nasty, but you actually have a decent shot of surviving.  Pneumonic is aerosolized and about as deadly as an infectious disease gets.  Most victims drown in their own blood within 48 hours.

59 #45  Back in the early 50's,  Father Patrick Peyton started a Catholic television show which illustrated stories of the Bible.  Often,  the stories would be interspersed with scenes of people at mass.

These are occasionally aired on EWTN and they are interesting because of the stars he convinced to act in them.  I remember seeing a young Raymond Burr as St. Peter,  for example.

One of the mass scenes had Loretta Young seated next to Mr. and Mrs. Don Ameche and Jack Haley.

70 I was on a gluten free diet for several weeks around the time I started med school because they were uncertain if I had celiac or not--I was miserable, because I love my carbs and am not a big fruit/veggie eater.  Going out to dinner with one in the party was a huge chore even a decade ago, though most restaurants now either have gluten free right on the menu or have a special menu readily available.

A ballot measure proposed by former California legislator Steve Peace would attempt to eliminate partisan primaries during the state's presidential elections by cutting off public funding. He hopes his latest proposal would extend the "top-two" primary to the presidential election.

The proposed initiative, which is pending at the state attorney general's office, would discontinue the use of public funding to hold party elections, such as county central committee and presidential primary elections.

By cutting off the public funding, Peace hopes political parties would open their primaries to all voters, not just members of their own party. The secretary of state and elections officials currently use public funds to certify candidates, draw up ballots, run polling places and tally votes.

"If you, the Republican Party, want to say independents can't participate, fine, but you're going to have to pay for the costs to tally that vote," he said.

California Republican Party Chairman Jim Brulte declined to comment.

Our genius filled in her name backward. And that was the terminus of our experience with Catholic education in Chicago. Our teachers were not that dumb when the Mrs (W. side Chicago Catholic) & I (smallville Public school) were young. Oh! Just remembered that my first published cartoons were hand-carved, backward, into mimeo stencils for the Jr HS newsletter. That was challenging.

242 We moved to Princeton, NJ when my sister and I were in middle school. Very progressive school system being an Ivy League town and all. The school was about 80% white and 20% black. We had two principals, one for the white kids and one for the black kids. White kids got traditional punishment for traditional offenses. Black kids pretty much never got punished for anything cause ... Not surprisingly, the black kids became very militant and it the school was full of black on white crap. It didn't work then, won't wort now. King was right, people should be judged on the content of their character and not the color of their skin. Odd that liberals seem to miss this part of the message.

Today, we find out that the complex was not a private one, but owned by a company that used federal and state money to purchase it. In other words, public.
