Data shows that for the avg person the chance to use a gun against a criminal is a once in a lifetime event.

Toure, you dolt. I carry a concealed handgun, and I hope like hell I never have to use it.
I also carry a homeowners' insurance policy on my house that I hope to never have to file a claim on.

Data shows that mass shootings are also rare and dropping.
Data shows a commensurate decrease in crime as rates of CCW have gone up.
Data shows that the AWB back in the 90s did fuck-all for stopping crimes.

Not on this issue, at least nationally.
Even here in MN where the Dems hold the governor seat and control the legislature, their proposed "assault weapon" ban is on track to fail.
The stupid is extra strong because the Dems know they're losing the gun control argument and getting desperate.

One of the most classic forms of liberal blindness to reality comes up in any discussion of gun self-defense. To wit:
[Liberal] No one needs a gun to protect themselves. That's the police's job.
[Torque] My friend Bill has had to pull his carry weapon FIVE times. There were no cops anywhere around, and he wouldn't have even been able to finish dialing 9-1-1 before getting stomped or stabbed. Street thugs aren't much intimidated by a phone.
[Liberal] I don't believe you. Show me the police reports that your imaginary friend "Bill" filed afterwards.
[Torque] Bill carries concealed illegally. Because this is goddamned urban Commiefornia. You have to be a ultrawealthy female Jewish liberal U.S. Senator like Dianne Feinstein to get a legit concealed carry permit in these counties. A privilege the Feinstein types have denied to everyone but themselves. If you're an ordinary working class schmuck, forget it. No chance of permit issuance. If Bill called the cops to report he averted an assault by pulling his sidearm, the cops would throw HIS ass in jail. That's why there is no report of the incident.
[Liberal] I knew you were lying.
Note how the situation liberals carefully set up (with an assist from idiot RINOs) works to further buttress the liberals' long term goal of a total gun ban. A lot of data about armed self-defense is never recorded because liberals made it a crime to go armed and thus to provide said data.
Steam jets. Ears. Some assembly required.

And of course as Billy said, you don't have to actually SHOOT a criminal to "persuade" him to leave you alone. As any cop or armed robber will tell you, merely credibly suggesting to someone that they MIGHT get shot is a fairly effective way to change their attitude right quick.

Dang me--I missed the import of that second tweet. It's an extremely rare event for a criminal to show up!
Tell that to the 500 or so homicide victims in Chicago each year. They'd all like to know that it's rare for a criminal to show up---it's even rarer for the shooter to show up at the victim's funeral to say that they're sorry, and they didn't understand Toure's rule that criminals should show up infrequently if at all. They probably missed Kindergarten Teacher Toure's lecture on sharing their blanky.

Horseshit. No resemblance to reality.
In the absolutely overwhelming number of cases that I am personally aware of regarding armed self-defense, the perp escapes completely unharmed.
Here's the sequence:
(a) Perp confronts intended victim
(b) Intended victim deploys firearm
(c) Perp instantly turns tail and runs
(d) Intended victim looks at escaping perp and thinks, "Gee, do I shoot this scumwad in the back, and quite likely lose everything I own in a civil suit, and quite likely go to prison on murder charges that will follow me for the rest of my life even after I'm paroled, or do I just reholster and call it a day?"
(e) Intended victim reholsters and goes about their business.
It would be REALLY GREAT if every time a mugger or rapist tried to ply their trade on an armed citizen, the predator was removed from the food chain. But it does not work that way for what should be obvious reasons.

30 years ago when I was going to college in mpls. I almost got a beat down from a psycho brute with a tire iron after he ran me off the road. I was able to calm him down while standing behind the hood of my pickup with my hand in my jacket and saying, "you do not want to do this, you will be shot dead."
Luckily he believed me, and yelled at me for another 30 seconds and then got in his piece of shit chevy and drove off. I did not have a gun. Thankfully I was able to bluff him, and no one and nothing got hurt that day, especially me.
And that is how most defensive gun uses really end. No shots, no one hurt. The bad guys decide that the risk is too much and leave. The ones we see in the paper are the stupid, the drugged up or crazy, and the evil criminals.

I did a semi-head-on once at maybe 20-25 MPH and they deployed. But since i have the seat all the way back (the Clarkson, not Hammond position), all it did was give me a burn on the arm since the seat belt stopped me before my face reached it.

A well regulated Militia.... the right to Bear ARMS....
I submit, that the clear itent of this Amendment is to make it possible for the People, to create a Militia... Military Weapons are ARMS.... to be 'under arms' is to have a Militarily viable weapon.
The base Military weapon worldwide today? The Assault Rifle...
Yet, the intent of the Amendment is clearly being violated by our own Government, in their attempt to grab Assault Weapons...

I guess you missed his column about how awesome it was that when he knocked up a girlfriend in the 90s he was able to take her to go get it scraped out. The one time he needed a prophylactic, he didn't have one....
Don't worry, everyone else missed it, too. Even the people on Twitchy who pointed out that Mr. Neblett has killed more black children than any NRA member randomly selected from their database.

One of them jumped in front of my car and started banging on the hood. The rest of them started to surround my car. I pulled out the gun and "showed it to them" They backed off immediately. So yes. If my home should be destroyed for some other reason, like the kids want to camp out and it's cold and raining outside, so I let them build a campfire on the living room floor, I'll just have to suck it up. I'm a big believer in personal responsibility.
If the evil George Bush destroys my home with one of his hurricanes, tornadoes, forest fires, lightening strikes or acts of God, I know I can count on FEMA to help me out as soon as they're done helping the victims of Hurricane Sandy in ten years or so.
