— Ace This is what universities (heavily subsidized by the US taxpayer) are churning out.
Because milk is produced by female mammals, a feminist perspective seems to offer a logical foundation for such inquiry. From the start, feminism has been a movement for justice: at its heart is the centrality of praxis, the necessary linkage of intellectual, political, and activist work. Feminist methodology puts the lives of the oppressed at the center of the research question and undertakes studies, gathers data, and interrogates material contexts with the primary aim of improving the lives and the material conditions of the oppressed. Using standard feminist methodology [standard feminist methodology?], twentieth-century vegan feminists and animal ecofeminists challenged animal suffering in its many manifestations (in scientific research, and specifically in the feminized beauty and cleaning products industries; in dairy, egg, and animal food production; in “pet” [note the scare quotes] keeping and breeding, zoos, rodeos, hunting, fur, and clothing) by developing a feminist theoretical perspective on the intersections of species, gender, race, class, sexuality, and nature. Motivated by an intellectual and experiential understanding of the mutually reinforcing interconnections among diverse forms of oppression, vegan feminists and ecofeminists positioned their own liberation and well-being as variously raced, classed, gendered, and sexual humans to be fundamentally interconnected to the well-being of other nondominant human and animal species, augmenting Patricia Hill Collins’s definition of intersectionality to include species as well.

This (ie see #49).
The problem isn't that people spend their time writing this garbage, its that the entire enterprise wouldn't exist without taxpayer subsidy.
IE, in the "free market of ideas", this slop goes on "clearance sale" pretty fast.
Anyway, whoever wrote this idiotic diatribe on milk should be proud of herself. This is the most publicity her "work" will ever receive, and this probably represents the absolute pinnacle of her academic career.
After next week, she'll be steaming milks at Starbucks part time for minimum wage (sans benefits). . .assuming they're hiring. . .probably not.

Greta Claire Gaard (born 1960, Hollywood, California) is an ecofeminist writer, scholar, activist, and documentary filmmaker.
Gaard's academic work in the realms of ecocriticism and ecocomposition is widely cited by scholars in the disciplines of composition and literary criticism. Her theoretical work extending ecofeminist thought into queer theory, vegetarianism, and animal liberation has been influential within women's studies. A cofounder of the Minnesota Green Party, Gaard documented the transition of the U.S. Green movement into the Green Party of the United States in her book, Ecological Politics.
She is currently a professor of English at University of Wisconsin-River Falls and a community faculty member in Women's Studies at Metropolitan State University, Twin Cities.

I think its doing away with them FOR WOMEN.
I don't think that's crazy in and of itself. Standards are good, but if the bar is set so high that most people can't reach it, then the standards themselves aren't helpful.
Along those lines, you can't expect female recruits to have the same upper body strength as male recruits. . .and shocker. . .that's what the Marines are finding with testing. The only way its reasonable to hold them to the exact same standard is if they're going to be tasked to the exact same activities (which, in this case, I don't think they are).
Unless the specific goal of this standard is to exclude female recruits from service, the key is to set a high standard that most of the recruits can actually REACH.

Other than that, if those animals are docile enough to let humans milk them, they get what they deserve. You notice we don't go around milking lionesses, do we? Yeah, there's a reason for that and it's because lionesses won't stand for it like a cow does.

Considering Praxis' proximity to Quo'nos, the economic and environmental impact to the Klingons was considerable. This cannot be emphasized enough. Had Praxis been a moon further out in the empirical system, the overburdened, yet key energy production facility - and the aftermath of the tragedy - would have been cause for minor diplomatic strains between the Federation and the Empire rather than the history-altering event it was manifested to be. I cannot stress this enough. Had Praxis' proximity been furhter out, the aftermath would have been minor. How minor?

This language they speak, these academics, writers and artists of the Left, is its own construct. George Orwell wrote extensively about the political and psycho-social aspects of language manipulation, specifically by totalitarian states. In short, the words we use determine the way we think, the way we perceive the world. In knowledgeable hands, impressionable people can be made to believe anything the State tells them to believe.
Leftist academics don't teach young minds a certain discipline or field of study. They teach them a language. The language they teach shapes thoughts and establishes boundaries. That language negates reason, declares classical Socratic logic an artificial social construct, eliminates traditional moral concepts such as right and wrong, and puts in their place a system of thought that makes its owner susceptible to unreason and thus open to whatever follows, no matter how illogical or alien to human experience. It is, among other things, a control mechanism.
I'm a commercial artist for a living. Sometimes my girlfriend and I go to arts-related functions in our city, dinners and exhibitions and get-togethers and the like, places where we sometimes hear unintelligible artspeak/academic-speak spoken. She laughs about it. I don't. I know where it comes from. I know what it's for.

I think that's a perfectly fair approach, so long as the standards themselves are reasonable. EG, its pretty easy to set the bar so high that the Marines won't be able to meet their recruiting quotas. Is that really what we want? Is it better to exclude 80% of female candidates for the USMC?
In my opinion, so long as women in the USMC have a different role than men (eg they're not doing front line combat), then its reasonable to hold them to a different. . .though gender appropriate. . . standard. This comes down mostly to what expectations are for women in that branch.
>>#190 Three (pull ups) is too high a bar?
Most women can't do ANY pullups (period). They have considerably less upper body strength than men, and (usually) more body fat, meaning less proportion of muscle/body weight.
I'm not in a position to comment on what the "appropriate" upper body standard is for women in the US marines, but traditionally women do a "flexed arm hang" as a surrogate for pullups. I'll just repeat that if you want to have women in the US Marines, you're not going to have many (or any) if you hold them to the same upper body strength standard as men. There are plenty of jobs in the USMC that don't require physical strength. If it comes down to having women more qualified to do those jobs in every way BUT physical strength, is the USMC better off with those women or without them?

Also, quote from the blog I swiped that from:
Theorist Greta Gaard spoke about ecofeminist theory and practice, and mentioned queer sexuality in the context of animal rights (which I loved).
Other talks I found inspiring included pattrice jones’ discussion of her queer-run animal sanctuary Vine Sanctuary, and about how they have all of their important meetings standing up in the barn while surrounded by animals. patrice said to share with paleo dieters and purported feminists who eat meat: “Tell them that eating meat is something you do to someone else’s body without their consent.” What a powerful and accurate thing to say!

Isn't this the requirements for front-line stuff? AFAIK, women have been in the Marines for a while now. The only change is that now they're allowed to join the front-line combat teams. So no, I'm not entirely sure that it is appropriate, since we *are* talking about jobs where strength is important.

Is 'praxis' the Latin word for bull-shiesse ?
Actually, the 'linkage' of intellectual and political NECESSARILY degrades, corrupts and perverts them both: Intellectual work is compromised by 'agenda-driven intellectuallism' as with agenda-driven journalism, science, etc. is engages in an assault on truth-finding by compromising it with goals that are more about achieving pre-determined outcomes than verifying truth. Since 'the truth' is in the back seat, the political agenda itself becomes suspect, it's not stated openly and in effect is advanced under false pretenses (consider analogy of bogus global warming science used as a cover for an anti-fossil-fuel agenda which would be more honest if it was stated more openly).
"Feminist methodology puts the lives of the oppressed at the center of the research question and undertakes studies, gathers data, and interrogates material contexts with the primary aim of improving the lives and the material conditions of the oppressed"
Since the primary aim is already a predefined ideological outcome ('improving the lives') on a pre-defined assessment ("the oppressed"), stated in marxist terms, there is no 'methodology' except a do-what-you-can-to-justify-a radical politicized agenda. 'interrogates material contexts' translation: Tortures data and facts until they confess to anything you demand of them.
The phony lies of feminism is a logical consequential outcome of a corrupted intellectual process that is at its root anti-intellectual.
Men beat spouses more during superbowl games? Check. (Never mind that its false, its a 'narrative' that supports the wonderful agenda of man-hating feminism.)
Eggs and milk are symbols of patriarchy? um, whatever. I dread to think what the feminists with a whiff of freud in them will say about a nice sausage on the plate next to two nice sunny-side up eggs.

Without.
The USMC aims to be "every Marine a Rifleman", down to cooks and pencil-pushers. Riflemen need, amongst other things, to be able to haul their own weight over a wall or barrier, at a minimum. You know, becoz the enemy is shooting at them? And the USMC has that aim, interestingly enough, becoz they've got loads of times when, like the Foreign Legion, they've been stranded and surrounded and fought to the last man.

The fact that some people who think they're so very much smarter than the rest of us decided that women and men are exactly the same wrt military service puts the "Every Marine A Rifleman" saying into full force, IMO. I get that "every Marine a rifleman". That's the "theory". In an ideal world, every single US Marine would be an Olympic Pentathlete of 200 lbs of solid muscle, shoot nothing but Xs, speak five languages, etc.
But in practice, to paraphrase Dick Cheney, you have to go to war with the recruits you can actually get.
We're running a technologically advanced military now. For every soldier in the field there are now multiple support staff at the base, running logistics, operating communications, running computers, etc. So the historical image of the USMC aside, there is plenty of room for recruits who have technical skills and/or good communication skills, but who may not be so physically strong.
I fully agree that standards should be high for those who actually have to truck the gear into combat. . .if you can't make the cut you can't go it (irrespective of gender), but I think its to the detriment of any given service if you exclude people who otherwise have a lot to offer who don't make that cut.
By the way, its not just physical standards that have been relaxed:

So who's running the numbers? How many male recruits are lost for each female recruit gained, when the PC effects are included? When female soldiers get lowered standards and preferential treatment - what does that do to the desirability of being a soldier?
We go to war with the soldiers we have, but the structure of the armed forces can and does change in between conflicts.

I think mentally stable, emotionally well-adjusted, and highly motivated patriotic people who wish to serve our country should be allowed to serve our country regardless of handicap--unless that handicap requires additional resources and proves detrimental to the mission. That doesn't mean, however, that standards should be lowered to accommodate them in positions they are not capable of filling.
I was once Airborne Infantry in the 82nd. We usually carried 100 lbs of weapons, gear and ammo even on field problems, and were even more heavily laden in combat. We sometimes ran or crawled with all that shit on our backs. We speed-marched (pick 'em up put 'em down) for miles and miles, and the weak and unfit fell by the wayside. If they fell by the wayside often enough, they were deemed unqualified and drummed out of Division. That's the way it was and--in my view--the way it should be. If you can't do the job, you can't do the job, so find another job. The stakes are too high to screw around.

What's a 'hang power cleans'?

They have "some", but in practice Israel doesn't put women into combat units, unless the women jump though hoops to insert themselves there. Most don't want to be in combat, and most combat units don't want to have them.
With a military that's roughly 50% women, only something like 3% of them are in actual combat units. Even the ones who are, aren't in what might be termed "front line", but rather military police, artillery, and defensive type positions.
Back on USMC, standards just have to be appropriate for the job/mission at hand, that's all. If today's USMC really has no room for anyone who can't hump 80 lbs of weight up a hill, then so be it, but empirically, I just don't think that's true. Women have been serving just fine in the USMC for years, and they haven't suddenly just LOST the ability to do pullups.

Leftist academics don't teach young minds a certain discipline or field of study. They teach them a language. The language they teachshapes thoughts and establishes boundaries. That language negates reason, declares classical Socratic logic an artificial social construct, eliminates traditional moral concepts such as right and wrong, and puts in their place a system of thought that makes its owner susceptible to unreason and thus open to whatever follows, no matter how illogical or alien to human experience. It is, among other things, a control mechanism."
Well said!
Language shapes thoughts is what they discovered, and so they have pursued the empty enterprise of using language to pervert what is truthful and use it as a weapon.
There biggest accomplishment has been making saying the truth a ThoughtCrime ('racist!' etc).

Is there a reason that people need to know that an animal sanctuary is "queer run"?"
Yes, ...
"Vine Sanctuary - where the men are queer and the sheep are nervous."

I don't know the answers to these questions about quotas, but I don't really think this is an either/or situation. I strongly doubt that the USMC is sacrificing field readiness so that it can have women in the corps. Right now less than 10% of US marines are female, and I can tell you that there are plenty of them who do a great job, who can't do a single pullup. While "maybe" they could all be replaced by males who are physically stronger (eg including nurses!), its not really clear to me that the USMC would really benefit from doing that.
I'm also going to guess that there aren't any male US Marines who are resentful that their female colleagues are held to a different standard with respect to upper body strength, let alone potential male recruits who decide that they don't want to become a Marine for this particular reason. If this really mattered to any individual, that person probably shouldn't be a Marine anyway.
>>We go to war with the soldiers we have, but the structure of the armed forces can and does change in between conflicts.
Of course, and we have (at least to some extent) the ability to tailor our forces to our needs. So these aren't trivial or unimportant questions.
I think the issue here has been touched on above. Its not that female Marines are being held to a different physical standard (this has been true for decades), its that now there is going to be some possibility for female marines put directly into combat, the issue of differing physical standards has reared its head again.
Again, my take on this is just that the recruit in question has to be held to a standard reasonable for their particular job/mission. In practice, this very well may mean that 99.8%+ of female USMC Marine recruits can't make the cut into combat units, and if not, so be it.

The point was more that the PC culture that says we "need" female soldiers is one which is focused on social engineering than on the true mission of the armed forces - destroying the enemy and being ready to do so. That sort of PC culture is toxic to the work environment and social policies.
The more likely reaction of the typical teenage soldier to female soldiers is, "cool, I want to bang her". (and there have been several comments this morning observing the various brothels being run by female soldiers) You'll note does not work towards the primary mission either, and is more destructivethan it is helpful.

When men and women are not interchangeable, it's folly to design the system as if they were. Young men become stupider than usual in the presence of females (Sally's hit! Get her to safety!); and that is not good when dealing with the mission-focused life-death situations the military is intended to be used in.
Speaking of 99.8% - how many female NFL players are strutting on the field? You might need a few more 9s.
