Trailer for Arrested Development Reboot Hits Internet
— Ace

I guess I need a political hook, so... Alternate media streams threaten to blah blah blah existing broadcast networks blah blah blah complete collapse of so-called "mainstream media" blah blah blah as the asteroid destroyed the dinosaurs blah blah a more individualized "pull" form of media delivery which will extinguish the current "push" model.

I've been a skeptic of this project -- the more one wants something to happen, the more reason there is it probably shouldn't -- but the trailer, at least, seems funny, and much in the spirit of the old show.

22 "Alternate media streams threaten to blah blah blah"

Yeah, sure thing, whatever, been hearing that utopian crap since the middle Nineties. Meanwhile, in the real world, it still hasn't even been possible to accomplish such minor steps as the unbundling of cable TV services.

I just finally said, "Fuck it," and cancelled everything, and tossed the TV at the dump, and I feel enormously better for having done so. I am smarter and healthier now, and I have the giant satisfaction which comes from knowing that not so much as one polished penny of my money is going to fuel the powerful liberal influence machine that is Hollyweird.

Turn it off. Stop feeding the beast. Read books.

Posted by: torquewrench at May 14, 2013 10:47 AM (gqT4g)

23 It's going to be cool. Every episode is intertwined like one big episode. And thats the reason they release them all the same day. When two people interact and go their separate way, the camera follows each and in both episodes that thing happens, except the camera follows each respective person. Never seen anything done that way and am counting down the days.

49 I always thought that the Fox execs did shows like Arrested Development and Firefly a mercy by putting them down while there was still an iota of creative spark left. Even in the third season, Arrested Development was veering toward snotty political commentary and leaving the comedy behind. Maybe a ten year hiaitus has given the writers/actors enough time to reinvigorate the show. Off-topic, but Psych seems to be defying the trend. I don't know if they got new writers or what, but the show is funnier this year than it has been for the last several.

Archer has nothing to do with archery. Sterling Archer, codename Duchess, is a secret agent for Isis on FX's hugely funny animated show. He's a James Bond parody with massive psychological problems and full-on alcoholism. He's also one of those great characters, like Cartman, who is either brilliant or absurdly stupid depending on the need of the plot or joke (and yet you just accept it, it seems plausible).

Speaking of worthless superheros-

Why is it that superhero cartoons always make the super-speedster or the shape-shifter (and they all have at least one of those) into a completely worthless (not to mention useless) bafoon?

Flash would save the day, except that he trips.

Beast-boy (Teen Titans) can turn into any animal he wants and yet can't figure out how to open a can of sardines.

I could continue.

Why is that?  Why not have Superman be the dunce?  Let Cyclops be the complete idiot.  Just for variety.

And yes, after a slow start I think this season has definitely picked up a lot! I'll admit, I was disappointed with the Clue episode, but I think it's because I love the movie so much and had it hyped so much in my head it was going to be a let down. But I think starting with "Dees Nups" and forward it's been a great season!

I objected because I thought your defense -- which I appreciate -- seemed to be conceding the point itself, that is, that diversions can ONLY be justified in terms of a break from politics, just so we can be refreshed for MOAR POLITICS. I talked about this at blog con. The media is the Number One stereotyper of Conservatives as moral scolds who are hyperpolitical and narrow minder. The Number Two stereotypers? Conservatives themselves, who are all too eager to be the exact stereotype. I know there is other news out there. Yesterday was a big news day, and so is today. I'm covering news. There do exist in this world other things beyond Conservative Activism, though.

Ace, I agree with you, but I think part of the problem is that there is still a hunger on the right for an outlet for conservative activism.

We all thought in 2009-2010 that it was going to be the Tea Party.  It is still active but IMO it isn't the grass roots organizing bonanza that it was supposed to be.

The left is beating us on this score.  They can organize boycotts and protests at the drop of a hat.  Why can't we?

So I think it is just an expression of justifiable anger.

The left extends their agitation into the human, the social, the cultural, while we focus on the least compelling aspect of politics, the politics itself. The media does not push its politics front and center-- they induce people to watch for other reasons, such as entertainment or cool factor. But whenever someone on the right attempts to do this, he's knocked for deviating from the political. The funny thing is 90% of the people on the right SAY we need to do this too. But the minute someone tries, the leash is yanked, and it is insisted that we return to our regularly scheduled programming of All Politics All The Time.

300 294 Dyson spheres are so yesterday, Matrioshka brain isthe future. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matrioshka_brain The term "matrioshka brain" was invented by Robert Bradbury as an alternative to the "Jupiter brain"—a concept similar to the matrioshka brain, but on a smaller planetary scale and optimized for minimum signal propagation delay. A matrioshka brain design is concentrated on sheer capacity and the maximum amount of energy extracted from its source star, while a Jupiter brain is more optimized for computational speed.[3] Such a structure would be composed of at least two but typically more Dyson spheres built around a star, and nested one inside another. A significant percentage of the shells would be composed of nanoscale computers (see molecular-scale computronium). These computers would be at least partly powered by the energy exchange between the star and interstellar space. A shell (or component, should a Dyson swarm be the design model used) would absorb energy radiated onto its inner surface, utilize that energy to power its computer systems, and re-radiate the energy outwards. The nanoscale computers of each shell would be designed to run at different temperatures; shells or components at the core could be nearly as hot as the central star, while the outer layer of the matrioshka brain could be almost as cool as interstellar space.[citation needed] The ideal mechanism for extracting usable energy as it passes "through" a shell or component, the number of shells (or orbital levels) that could be supported in such a manner, the ideal size of the shells to be constructed, and other details, are all issues of speculation.[citation needed] The idea of the matrioshka brain violates none of the currently known laws of physics, although the engineering details of building such a structure would be staggering, as such a project would require the "disassembly" of significant portions (if not all) of the planetary system of the star for construction materials.[citation needed]

315 I read that each new episode will primarily focus on a single character, and the intersections between them will only be occasional, but the greatness of Arrested Development was rooted in the ensemble.

If it's not really an ensemble show anymore, will it still work?

That's my only misgiving. Otherwise, I'm glad it's back. Never thought that would really happen.

Same, but I want those other threads to be *good*, like this one was before it got derailed.  The gaming thread is, and no offense intended to the guys who post it, almost completely outside of my gaming interests every week.  Hotline Miami is basically tailor-made for Moron Nation (ultraviolence + weirdness + 80s music) and it barely merits a mention, but every week we get 3 dense paragraphs about EVE?

Plus the commenters treat it as an unfortunate speed bump.

320 The pattern for watching an AD episode goes as follows: Meh....heh....heh... .meh.. ...meh... .meh... .heh.. ..HA!.. ..meh... .meh... ..meh... meh...meh. ..meh... .heh.. ..meh. ..meh...THE END My new fave is on the Forbidden Channel- Hannibal on Thurs night. They started the series as a bit of a slow burn regarding Hannibal Lector, but that let us see him as the others around him do. That may have been a mistake given the ratings the show has. Slowly, they've been letting him out of the cage though and introducing characters that play a part in the books. Last week they introduced the guy who will become the "no-face-guy" Gary Oldman played in the movie "Hannibal". Give it a look. You'll be surprised how good it is.
