Two Tornadoes Hit Suburbs of Oklahoma City

As the twisters may hit the most populated area, this has the potential to be worse than the Moore strikes.

Oh, No: Now tornado sirens are going off in Moore, too.

The tornado (one of them) is expected to hit downtown OKC in the next three minutes, per Shep Smith.

Losing Destructive Power? Shep just explained something I don't understand -- something about a down-draft rearward wind, or such -- which may have knocked the storm cell down a notch in power.

UPDATE [DIT]: Casualties reported at a Holiday Inn in Earth City MO, about 10 miles NW of St. Louis. The ball game at Busch Stadium was called off tonight.

Just lots of confusion and bad storms. Watching KMOV for coverage.

I was taught to go find a ditch or something, but thankful I have never had to do this. I also was told to shelter under my desk during a nuclear attack from Bay of Pigs, so what do I know.

In last week's Moore tornado, it was 15 minutes which is why they believe only 24 people were killed. 15 minutes is pretty good.

Any storm in a watch area has the potential to drop a tornado.  If a storm is headed your way, you should have a plan to get to safety.

Those things tend to make a tornado "lift" when passing over it. (I grew up on the Nebraska side of Sioux City, and actually watched the Missouri river cause that phenomena. North Sioux City would get hit, South Sioux was spared, and destruction resumed around Dakota City)

114 Flatbush, they forecasted the possibility of tornado outbreaks early in the day if not last night.  They knew the possiblility exists, just as always... they just never know exactly when they'll drop down and track...

I'd bet warnings were issued late afternoon...  but in this part of the country, watches and warnings are issued and most of the time, city-wide devastating systems are .... or used to be .... rare events.  This outbreak is crazy..

We USAF folks know stuff, not like those Army pukes.  Stationed twice at Tinker.  Was first duty station in 1972 and returned as commander of a very small unit in the early 80s.  Had several tornadoes head right for the base while we lived there.  Threw the family in the bathtub and covered them with a mattress.

No warnings then of course.   Hardly anyone in the ranach areas even had radio,  because no electricity.

He was scared of storms his whole life.  Once dragged us into the station wagon and drove 10 miles south due to seeing a transformer flash during a thunderstorm.

I've always had the same concept about elevators.  With my luck when the day finally comes, I'll be too old and decrepit to get a good leap, or I'll mis-time it.  Ah well. 

 

'Mythbusters' actually tried to debunk the elevator thing.  I think they had a lot of flaws in their set-up so it was inconclusive in my mind.

Perhaps if you were in a small plane.
In my mis-spent youth, I roadraced motorcycles for a while. I generally regarded a spill on a M/C as less risky than a car crash. The reason being, once a car is out of control..., you're just along for the ride. Because of the large mass of the car, it is likely to continue onward until it hits something. As they say, it isn't the speed...., it's the sudden stop that gets you. One regularly sees M/C racers dismounted at high speed. Generally they skidder along a bit, but slide to halt fairly quickly.

I am in Floriduh now but have family all over state. Hurricanes will be coming for me soon, but, here on Coast, the tornadoes are weak little water spout things compared to what is going on tonight in OK and MO. Had my share of some big ones growing up, therefore the knowledge of leaping from car to ditch if in tornado. However, if a snake was in the ditch I would rather deal with the tornado.

A HUGE storm came up as I brought him back on base, the night before his graduation.  As we arrived at the gate, we were told several windows at his barracks had been blown out by and extremely powerful storm we drove through.

I love Oklahoma, and would live there, if circumstances allowed. One of the highlights of my childhood was visiting my cousins in Oktaha and swimming in a creek, with one kid on the lookout for water moccasins.

Tammy: the Dems are scarce in this county. They are skeered of us. There is a large black snake in our yard who, husband claims, keeps away the bad snakes. I think there are coral snakes somewhere, but I rarely venture outside into the wilds. Let's just say if Mr. Black Snake, who has scared me in the past, ever gets inside, well, I am out of here. Lizards I can handle (hairspray messes them up pretty badly, the wee little ones who somehow get inside). I read yesterday that snakes were falling out of trees in DC and that made me happy as, for once, it was not in Floriduh (which now has giant lizards and some type of huge snail that looks gross and pythons in toilets). We are moving West, God willing.

I'm not seeing any reports of stadium damage. There is reports for of damage at a holiday inn not far from here with many injuries.

we had a power surge. I turned off our ac after it sounded loud after the surge it was running at the time. Any horde members have advice on that? I haven't turned it back on yet.

462 Can you see storms from 200 miles away? Well, yeah. I can remember seeing some storms off to the east and coming in to check the radar to see where they were. They were in Louisiana, and I'm in Katy, TX, west of Houston. Going to a horizon distance calculator, I find that the horizon distance from 30,000 feet is 212 miles.

No. Don't shelter under an overpass if you can help it. Just don't. If you find yourself caught without shelter in one of these situations: Find some relatively low place on the prairie (like a ditch or a culvert) grind your face into the ground and commence pooping/praying. Well, that's what's worked for me.

481 In the olden days, when I was growing up, we were told to "drive at a right angle to the storm" if we were driving and a storm came up.  If it was going due east, go due north or due south.  Don't try to run in front of it.

This actually did work, a couple of times.  Not really recommended, though.

486 Commissioner Gordon, I was living in Delaware County Ohio at the time of the Xenia tornado, which is just north of Columbus. I remember that day it got dark as night around noon, but the clouds off to the west had cleared off early enough that I could watch the sun set. And we lost power for 24 hours. We were just about to use the neighbor's gasoline pump to pump the water out of the basement when the power came back on.

487 The bottom line with severe weather is to understand what the forecast is DAYS before it happens. If you want to be safe, you KNOW what the convective outlook is and make your plans around it. You have an emergency radio, an app for your phone for radar/warnings and a PLAN for wherever you are at. OKC was sitting in the middle of the hatched zone days ago. Here in the STL area, we knew that this would be the worst day of the week. If something was going to happen, it would be today. Doesn't mean that something will happen but means that you pay attention. If I lived in OK, I would for damn sure not be on the road, whatever that looks like. But there are always some people that don't want to modify their plans. Leave work early or stay late or whatever. Never operate blind. This includes people who visit. There are free apps for phones and always always check out www.weather.gov for the area that you're traveling to in tornado alley. Always.

488 I work a half mile from the holiday inn, at an evil health insurer. Live about a mile or 2 from work and we have some fallen trees and such. House was also in the path of the Good Friday tornado a couple years ago. Had the same feeling of intense pressure in the ears as then, and was relieved it wasn't as bad here this time. Hear the work building took it bad though. Haven't tried to make it there, because its a PITA for emergency personnel to have onlookers. Sounds like we'll have to be contingency planning for Monday all weekend though.
