— Ace As the twisters may hit the most populated area, this has the potential to be worse than the Moore strikes.
Oh, No: Now tornado sirens are going off in Moore, too.
The tornado (one of them) is expected to hit downtown OKC in the next three minutes, per Shep Smith.
Losing Destructive Power? Shep just explained something I don't understand -- something about a down-draft rearward wind, or such -- which may have knocked the storm cell down a notch in power.
UPDATE [DIT]: Casualties reported at a Holiday Inn in Earth City MO, about 10 miles NW of St. Louis. The ball game at Busch Stadium was called off tonight.
Just lots of confusion and bad storms. Watching KMOV for coverage.
MORE: No casualties at the Holiday Inn (Express)

Except for the Katrina dramas and bodies scattered all over I-10. My personal favorite, however, was Geraldo snatching baby from Grandma's arms and screaming that this baby (whose face he was pinching and making her cry) was the face of Katrina! HELP! Rape! Then Grandma looked at the loon and got her baby back.

Any hope for advances in warning tech? Couple hours warning so people can hunker down.
If you're smart, you start nervously eying the sky when a Watch is issued.
Any storm in a watch area has the potential to drop a tornado. If a storm is headed your way, you should have a plan to get to safety.
When the sky starts turning sickly pea-soup green, it is time to execute that plan.

I'd bet warnings were issued late afternoon... but in this part of the country, watches and warnings are issued and most of the time, city-wide devastating systems are .... or used to be .... rare events. This outbreak is crazy..

I'd rather see O'Reilly bloviate with an insert with the coverage and then break way if something happens.

Or something like that. Then he got jabbery during the manhunt and I was correcting him from my chair. Sometimes his mouth cannot keep up with teleprompter, but he tries!

We USAF folks know stuff, not like those Army pukes. Stationed twice at Tinker. Was first duty station in 1972 and returned as commander of a very small unit in the early 80s. Had several tornadoes head right for the base while we lived there. Threw the family in the bathtub and covered them with a mattress.

No warnings then of course. Hardly anyone in the ranach areas even had radio, because no electricity.
He was scared of storms his whole life. Once dragged us into the station wagon and drove 10 miles south due to seeing a transformer flash during a thunderstorm.

Same thing for an elevator that is run away. I would time my jump so as not to smash into the floor when the elevator hit the ground. I am a thinker like that.

I've always had the same concept about elevators. With my luck when the day finally comes, I'll be too old and decrepit to get a good leap, or I'll mis-time it. Ah well.
'Mythbusters' actually tried to debunk the elevator thing. I think they had a lot of flaws in their set-up so it was inconclusive in my mind.

You would have to jump UP at a velocity almost equal to the downward velocity of the crashing plane. Most of us cannot jump upwards at 100+ (conservative estimate) miles per hour.

But elevator? Might have a chance to at least lessen your velocity at impact.

Perhaps if you were in a small plane.
In my mis-spent youth, I roadraced motorcycles for a while. I generally regarded a spill on a M/C as less risky than a car crash. The reason being, once a car is out of control..., you're just along for the ride. Because of the large mass of the car, it is likely to continue onward until it hits something. As they say, it isn't the speed...., it's the sudden stop that gets you. One regularly sees M/C racers dismounted at high speed. Generally they skidder along a bit, but slide to halt fairly quickly.

A severe t-storm can pack some winds up to 100 mph, like the "dericho" that hit Virginia and Maryland last year.
That would knock down more power lines than the relatively narrow path of a tornado

I am in Floriduh now but have family all over state. Hurricanes will be coming for me soon, but, here on Coast, the tornadoes are weak little water spout things compared to what is going on tonight in OK and MO. Had my share of some big ones growing up, therefore the knowledge of leaping from car to ditch if in tornado. However, if a snake was in the ditch I would rather deal with the tornado.

Tammy: the Dems are scarce in this county. They are skeered of us. There is a large black snake in our yard who, husband claims, keeps away the bad snakes. I think there are coral snakes somewhere, but I rarely venture outside into the wilds. Let's just say if Mr. Black Snake, who has scared me in the past, ever gets inside, well, I am out of here. Lizards I can handle (hairspray messes them up pretty badly, the wee little ones who somehow get inside). I read yesterday that snakes were falling out of trees in DC and that made me happy as, for once, it was not in Floriduh (which now has giant lizards and some type of huge snail that looks gross and pythons in toilets). We are moving West, God willing.

The thinking is that the tornado alerts for OKC will be lifted at 9PM CST. Severe flooding and grapefruit sized hail still a problem.

@403. Jane.
I was a soldier, but never, ever, did I think Marines were pussies. Someone has an agenda, whatever the fuck that might be.
In all honesty, there are days when I wish the Marine recruiter had not gone out for coffee that day in Scottsdale recruiting office. I don't regret my Army service at all, but I missed out on the chance to become a Marine.
Prayers to your son.

And to the people judging those who live in the heartland, enjoy living in the NE and So. Cal. The jihadists will be knocking on your doors again.
Seriously, people are suffering and dying.

we have basements in STL, so most people don't do the storm shelter thing.

It is entirely possible that the guy is just a mouthy, ignorant asshole, who may have heard that from someone who did intend it as malevolent. Having said that, there is plenty of good-natured inter-service humor. Any long-term serviceman has a whole raft of cheap shots to take at the other services. At any rate, if the guy wasn't speaking from that perspective, then see opening sentence.

Saw a huge black snake sunning near a flower bed the other day. Next day I was mowing near the same spot and saw him slip-sliding away. I sure hope I did not hurt him with the mower.

And the consensus opinion is that they were f'ing idiots and damn lucky to be alive at all after that stunt.
That was a very, very, VERY small, VERY weak tornado, by the way.
They were DAMN lucky it wasn't any bigger.
