Update on Sonoma Cross Incident
— Ace

@moxiemom doesn't like the War on Higher Ed meme and draws my attention to the college's president's statement, which I honestly hadn't read.

She is right, though: this seems like a fairly fulsome confession of error.

University spokeswoman Susan Kashack confirmed to Fox News that the incident occurred and expressed extreme regret.

“Someone who works here was concerned that the cross might be off-putting to students who are coming to campus for the first time,” she said, adding that the supervisor was “completely wrong.”

“It was absolutely an inappropriate action for him to make that request of her,” she said.

Kashack said Sonoma State President Ruben Arminana was “angered” by the incident and they are trying to contact Jarvis so they can apologize.

“The president was very upset about it and asked me to contact Miss Jarvis and give a profuse apology,” she said.

Well, you can't really offer much beyond a profuse apology, or branding the request "absolutely inappropriate."

However -- I was wrong not to include that (my eyes had glazed over before I read down that far), but it still seems to me that there's something wrong here.

That is, when someone establishes guidelines -- wait, let's think about a guideline. A guideline, literally, is a guide for keeping you on the path. It keeps you from going off into the woods and ditches on either side, right?

Now, if you're explaining a guideline to your underlings, and you mostly teach them how to avoid going off the left side of the path, that is, now not to offend those on the left, and do not spend much time at all telling them how to avoid the ditch on the right side (the individual liberty side), well, a stupid underling, having heard mostly about avoiding the ditch on the left side, is going to go too far over on the right side, because all this idiot is thinking is "avoid crossing the left."

Any rule for keeping behavior on a straight path must contain two lines, as two lines mark a path, right? The left boundary and the right boundary. (Sorry to keep on this metaphor but it's useful.) If this universities just talk about the left boundary all day, and don't give their Idiot Employees (who are largely lefties in the first place) careful instruction about the right boundary, we're going to have idiots crossing the right boundary all the time. The right boundary hasn't been sufficiently demarked for them, and, being Stupid as F*ck, that means they're going to be traipsing off into the deep woods unless you afford them the sort of serious minding you'd give to a baby who just learned how to toddle.

@moxiemom is right that the college president certainly seems to be effusive in her apology, but I wonder if this college president has thought about the natural consequences of a very one-sided guideline for university personnel behavior, a guideline that is focused constantly on PC crap and rarely speaks at all to the individual liberties of individual students. A guideline that talks all day about "not offending other students" but does not then lay down the other side of the line, that students have a basic right to express themselves even if some very sensitive idiots might be offended by this expression.

I don't think that latter idea was communicated to this moron. And that is on the college. And in fact that is on almost every college.

They have created an environment in which Emotion and Censorship, rather than Reason and Expression, are the king and queen of the ivory tower. And the stupid, ass-kissing courtiers will follow the lead of the king and queen they wish to impress.

OCALA, Fla., July 2, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Florida State's Attorney Angela Corey has been indicted by a citizens' grand jury, convening in Ocala, Florida, over the alleged falsification of the arrest warrant and complaint that lead to George Zimmerman being charged with the second degree murder of African-American teenager Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida.

The indictment of Corey, which was handed down last week (see www.citizensgrandjury.com), charges Corey with intentionally withholding photographic evidence of the injuries to George Zimmerman's head in the warrant she allegedly rushed to issue under oath, in an effort to boost her reelection prospects. At the outset of this case, black activists such as Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, who whipped up wrath against Zimmerman, demanded that he be charged with murder, after local police had thus far declined to arrest him pending investigation.

It sure sounds apologetic. Yet it makes no mention of a promise that it will never happen again.

Here's the thing: These academics a) believe that signs of Christianity are offensive, and b) know damn well that asking a person to remove said signs are inappropriate.

That won't stop them, however, from making these "requests" in the future. They'll continue to do it until they wear us out. That's how the Left do.

The whole point of the apology is to make this "go away." If the President really felt contrite, they would say, "The supervisor involved is being disciplined according to university guidelines*, and we will be holding classes on acceptance religious diversity and expression- including Christian expression- to make sure this never happens again." Which is exactly what they'd say (sans the "Christian" part) if this had been a Muslim girl, for instance. *- It IS an internal HR issue, they really can't just say, "And she's being fired."

Please call person X and tell them we are sorry for thing Y is in a different category altogether from please get person X on the phone and then I will apologize to her. This isn't an apology, this is spin, pure and simple. They got caught. They are fucked legally. They are trying to walk it back. Your pathway example is spot on. Years and years and years ago I got appointed to a diversity committee in law school, mainly because the prof who put my name in for the position had a wicked sense of humor, and I used to constantly point out all the things that offended me. Let's just say the precious darlings on the committee hated being held to their own standards. Speaking of holding people to their own standards, I do believe that now that the reasonable person standard for sexual harassment on college campuses has been eliminated, it's time for the Right to go off to the races. Exactly. Don't care.

If this were a Muslim student who had been offended, the Obama Party and the left would be screaming for seven-figure financial settlements, firings, mandatory "diversity" training for all employees in the state university system, etc.

Conservatives need to take the regulatory state the Obama Party has built and use it to choke them. Every single dumb requirement, every single imbecile rule, every single mandatory this and that and whatever and force them all to sit through it.

Liberals do what they do because their only thought is that someone else will have to follow the rules they create. Force them to live under their own regimes of terror, and play back their shrieks of how what they're being forced to do was "necessary.

89 Well it was a much bigger 'Boom' moment because even before the defense got up, it was obvious that she was going out of her way to minimize GZ's injuries. Maybe I'm just cynical, but I wouldn't expect anything else. And who appointed her isn't all that relevant to my mind. On the other hand, getting her to admit that everything she just said went almost 100% against her training- that would be "bombshell" territory.

108 Injuries she never examined. We have already had the testamony of the EMT and the NP that treated Jorge in person. Exactly. Let's take apart her testimony (and this is just from what was reported here on the blog): 1) She was using glossy photos to "diagnose" the extent of the injuries. A doctor would never do that. Doctors don't even like using video- they want, even need, to be able to see the injuries first hand to determine the best treatment. After-the-fact, the correct ethical thing to do is say the equivalent of "yep, those are injuries, all right." 2) She was using that flawed diagnosis to come to a conclusion about what Zimmerman should have believed about the injuries. That's even more ridiculous, because a) they were largely on the back of his head (where he couldn't see them), b) while you're being attacked is not the time for careful deliberation, and c) all it takes is "just one more" blow to the head and it can crack like an egg. You don't have to wait until you're literally "in fear for your life," the State has to prove that you did not have a Reasonable Expectation that your assailant meant you grievous bodily harm.

129 I've noticed that in these campus cases where "religious symbols" and such are suppressed by policy, the enforcement is slanted *enormously* towards Christians.

I'm not even a Christian myself, but the bias is extremely strong and quite pervasive and it's impossible to not notice it occurring.

As for enforcement of such codes against, say, Muslim headcoverings? Pagan symbols? Nonexistent.

Again, these are the fruits of the "long march through the institutions" which began with the New Left radicals in the 1960s. They set out a plan to deliberately capture and control higher education, and they've gotten it, and they're now using that control to punish their enemies and reward their friends.

It's time for conservatives to stop cooperating with that crap. I love the idea of putting universities on the hook for defaulted student loans, and it would be completely awesome to have the House start to push on that front. So,

I'm with the horde here.  Apologies are a dime a dozen, especially from university professors.

Hell our (now deposed) University President had a foul mouth, told the students to "panhandle" for tuition money, and told the faculty he didn't care about them.

He also was rumored to have a huge running tab at florist that rented shop space on campus because of his "apologies."  Clearly however they did not effect behavior.

I'm reminded of the Big Bang Theory Line by Dr. Gablehauser.  "What's the business of this place?"

(murmering amongst the guys).  "Research?"

"No, Money."

It's not sarcasm it's true.  And this is just an attempt to make sure they don't lose any sweet sweet donation money. (By the by, our "Freshman Advisors" were full of sorority girls who thought it was fun to see how many people in their freshman group they could bed.  I was blissfully ignorant of this my Freshman year, but it was apparently a poorly kept secret, yet no one was ever disciplined.  So there's your love the leftism trumping all things.)

The problem with guidelines is that sometimes people go way beyond what is intended.  A general prohibition on proselytizing gets morphed by some eager beaver into a prohibition on anyone saying anything about religion.  The first is likely to be appropriate - the office cannot be used to promote this; the second is likely inappropriate - you can't stop people from discussing a topic.

That does happen because we are still dealing with human beings and human beings are morons (not all of them of the good kind).

Little known fact: the gloves in the big box in a doctors office (and likely the same ones used in a morgue) are not anywhere near sterile.  They're 99.9% for the doctors protection and maybe .1% for yours.

I'd be willing to bet if you took a swab off the some fresh ones pulled from a box you could get a DNA sample off them.

The Sterile gloves are pricey and usually stored elsewhere.

Having said that: "eww." And perhaps a morgue is different? (Although unlikely, since contamination would be minimal anyway.)

171 The problem with guidelines is that sometimes people go way beyond what is intended. 177 "Sonoma County is a White Refuge, layered with Hippie-White semi-stoners and normal ordinary White people, with almost no non-Whites once you get out of the towns along 101."

Yet even by the standards of the People's Soviet Socialist Republic of Commiefornia, Sonoma is enormously far to the left.

For twenty years they routinely sent off to Congress the arch-moonbat Lynn Woolsey, who actually boasted of being the first former welfare recipient elected to Congress. As though being on the dole were some sort of impressive personal accomplishment.

Remember when Cindy Sheehan showed up at one of George W. Bush's state of the union addresses and promptly had to be arrested by the Capitol Police for misbehavior? (As anyone who is paying attention knows, I carry no brief for Bush, but having a nut like Sheehan deliberately brought in to where he was speaking was beyond the pale.) It was Woolsey who gave Sheehan the invitation.

Woolsey also had a long history of personal antipathy to Christianity and Christians, but loves her some muzzies. Voting for example for a symbolic resolution to "recognize the importance" of Ramadan.

So to find this stuff going on in her old district is no surprise.

Maybe I (in my 20s) are just old school.

Having said that, I thought it was strange that it was (according to those I spoke with) the woman who did most of the..what's the right term...assertive flirting.  Not that their weren't male advisors who did it to, just that the proportion was less.

(Most of the men advisors I knew later had long term girlfriends.)

188 110 Injuries she never examined. We have already had the testamony of the EMT and the NP that treated Jorge in person.

Exactly.

Let's take apart her testimony (and this is just from what was reported here on the blog):

1) She was using glossy photos to "diagnose" the extent of the injuries.

A doctor would never do that. Doctors don't even like using video- they want, even need, to be able to see the injuries first hand to determine the best treatment. After-the-fact, the correct ethical thing to do is say the equivalent of "yep, those are injuries, all right."

2) She was using that flawed diagnosis to come to a conclusion about what Zimmerman should have believed about the injuries.

Posted by: AllenG (Dedicated Tenther) at July 02, 2013 02:45 PM (/PCJa)

Well at least troy isn't around today.  He'd probably talk about his personal experiences with diagnosis of injuries and based on his personal experience he knows, without looking up any information about the case that Zimmerman was not hurt enough to be fearful for his life.

FMG. "Foreign Medical Graduate".

If you look at the stats, FMGs account for a wholly disproportionate number of the doctors who get disciplined for misconduct or sued for incompetence.

This is in part due to the fact that in a lot of the rest of the world, including in India where Dr. Rao trained, it's a routine thing to be able to buy one's way through medical school exams and licensing.

Expect to have a lot more Dr. Rao types showing up in your personal medical future thanks to Obamacare.

That's how it has worked in, say, the UK, where FMGs fill out the ranks of their National Health Service. And just as frighteningly inept there as here. I could quote dozens of terrifying stories off the top of my head about NHS FMG doctors administering the wrong drugs to lethal effect.

The REAL key to the whole self defense argument is not even being talked about...

In Zimmermans next day video, he says.... yes he was getting beat... but it was not until his coat road up, T saw his gun and said, 'you're dead' that he pulled the gun and shot...

Lets see... guy assaults you... sees your gun in the holster, THEN says you're dead as he starts to move TOWARD your gun....

I'd say that counts as a 'reasonable' fear for your life....

(and just to point out... note... Z did NOT pull his gun early in the 'fight'... as he could have if he was 'out to get' T).

"A guideline that talks all day about "not offending other students" but does not then lay down the other side of the line, that students have a basic right to express themselves even if some very sensitive idiots might be offended by this expression."

I'd go further: students who are offended by a visual reminder that people with different beliefs or opinions exist and will be swimming into their view all day, every day, should be quickly educated out of such sensitivity.  It shouldn't be acknowledged, let alone pandered to.  There are Christians, Hindus, atheists, Mormons, Muslims etc. all around you.  A university is supposed to be a magnet that attracts people from all directions.  If that offends you, then resign yourself to being offended.  But a better way to enjoy your time at university is to realize that your expectations that inconvenient people will magically disappear when you're around is asinine and should be abandoned at once.

320 I'm sorry, I missed the part in the statement that the offender must attend sensitivity training.
