Vacation Time Open Thread
— Ace

Hey I'm taking off. I haven't had off (beyond a holiday) since January. I'm a little beat.

I will be around sporadically during the week, but mostly to put up open threads, if the cobs are busy. I may put up quickie links in a pinch but that will be the extent of my output.

4 I was waiting for the open thread for this: I'm a lurker here, and haven't posted in a while. Forgive me. However, I'd be grateful if you took a minute to read this and offer any experience or advice you might have. Basically, my natural gas provider (Duke Energy) seems to have lost their mind! I built my house in late 09, and I set up even billing with them after the first year. Initially it was around $70/mnth, and over time they reduced it to $47/mnth. I made the mistake of going with paperless billing and setting up autopay. This month, I received an NSF notice from my bank. The gas company had attempted to withdraw $2460! The bank charged me $30 for the NSF. I contacted Duke right away, and they opened opened an investigation and promised to call me back. I did hear back from them yesterday morning, but it was to tell me they were still looking into it and they would contact me again. Not having heard from them, I called them late today and things got really wierd. They claim that they came out and read the meter yesterday and found that I had been overpaying, and that I have a $2400 CREDIT!?. BUT! my even billing amount was now $296. When I pointed out that they are telling me they have been overcharging, but my even billing was going up like 6X, they agreed to reduce the even billing to $55 and they are going to issue me a $2400 credit. After the call I looked over my bills and find that I have only paid them $2160 over the past 42 months. So, basically, they tried to charge me 2460 and bounced the withdrawal from my bank that cost me $30. They now claim that was a mistake, and they really owe me some $2400 (more than the total amount I have paid them for 3 1/2 years), but my next even billing amount will be $296. Oh, and apparenlty I can take a hike over the $30 bank fee, since they are refusing to even give me a credit for that amount. I told them they are going to pay me that back, and better have their legal department contact me. They promised me a call back on Monday. Anyone have any advice here?

5 OK, after today's news, there is only one remaining course of action: a. Sell house, and most of my urban-oriented possessions. b. Take that sweet cash from the over-inflated Bay Area real estate market and buy a minimum of 5 acres (and hopefully more) somewhere out in the desert or mountains. Must have good view, from above, of entrance gate (see "f" below). c. Install lots of solar panels and windmills with some of the leftover sweet cash. LOTS. d. Dig a well, built catchment tanks and ponds; you know the drill. e. Cease usage of all credit cards, except where completely unavoidable. f. Target practice. Sniper target practice. I hate guns, but hey, you gotta do what yo gotta do. g. Say goodbye to most friends and relatives, what with their "Obama 2008" stickers 'n' all. h. Legally change my name to something real generic. I'm thinking "Morgan Tyler" is perfect, because it could be reversed, confusing the algorithms, and also could be either gender. Ms. Tyler Morgan, or Mr. Morgan Tyler? Or double-vice-versa? A search for the name produces 237,000 hits on Facebook. Nice. i. Dogs? Oh yeah. I'm thinking some pits, some rotts, some yappy terriers as the fuse. j. Off. The. Grid, baby. i. GET OFF MY LAND. Seriously. ----------- (Repost from earlier dead thread.)

If they think they owe you money but don't actually, they will figure it out.  guaranteed.

Just take your bills, figure out what you should have paid, subtract your even payments and look at the difference.  Get that resolved of who owes whom.

Then, stop doing the even payments and the auto withdrawl.  pay monthly.  Forget the $30, even for the principle of the thing.  You will spend more time than its worth.

my advice.

84 Rates for travel and vacation in Peruvia are a bargain  this time of year. An added plus is that the exchange rate actually (and remarkably) works in favor of the U.S. dollar, the current rate being 10,000 Peruvian Salovars (aka 'Brownbacks') per U.S. dollar. The circumstance has evolved as a consequence of the Peruvian government having adopted as continuing Official Policy every NYT column produced by Nobel Prize winner Paul Krugman.

101 84 Rates for travel and vacation in Peruvia are a bargain this time of year. An added plus is that the exchange rate actually (and remarkably) works in favor of the U.S. dollar, the current rate being 10,000 Peruvian Salovars (aka 'Brownbacks') per U.S. dollar.

Sure, just talk about the good side. Are you with the Peruvian Tourist Bureau? Do you want to answer a few questions about the disease rates of people who just touch the Peruvian currency?

Some people don't understand how stressful it is to sit around in your jammies all day surfing Ewok porn and trying to out-wuss Allah.  They don't see the cracked nails, the lingering backaches, the constant fear of running out of lotion or Kleenex or Cheetos.  They don't suffer the heartbreak of carpal tunnel syndrome and attached shame of knowing how you got it.  They just see the finished product of seemingly random words posted on an old template as mainly open threads and think, "Hey, that looks pretty easy!  I might start me one of them bloggy things and make some quick cash!"

That is a difficult cut. I consider myself a good cook but have trouble with it. It's intensely flavored, but not particularly fatty, so it's easy to overcook it and dry it out. And the grain is pronounced, so it's even tough to cut correctly.

If it tasted good then you should be proud of yourself.

220 I grilled a marinated flank steak this AM. It could have been in a magazine; it looked that good. Tasted good, too, but not quite four star. FWIW, a perfectly done piece of flank steak is as good as any beef around. At least a close second to an aged prime filet. Flank steak marinated in Andrea's* steak sauce is psycho good. *Andrea's is a unique marinade/sauce. It's from downstate Illinois and includes things like rutabaga, and is like Worcestershire on steroids. It 's really thin and penetrates meat like some kind of culinary solvent.

Damn you CRUUUUUUUUUUUUUZZZ!

We had 'em.  We had 'em where we wanted 'em.  For five years we gave 'em everything they wanted.  A massive stimulus bill to start it off, that was then built in the CRs for the last five years.  Presidential executive orders repealing work requirements for welfare.  A massive tax increase after the 2012 election.  We let them pad the foodstamp rolls and the SSDI rolls.  We let them ignore the immigration laws and bring in a flood of illegal aliens to work for cash and get welfare on the side.  We let the DOJ pick and choose what laws they wanted to follow.  We stood and watched the left try to ramrod a man into a life sentence in prison for defending himself against a two bit thug.  We slowly and strategically caved on gay marriage.  We avoided calling out the QEs that are creating a bubble in the stock market.  We let them put out tens of thousands of new EPA and OSHA regulations that are strangling small businesses.  We let them use the IRS to stifle the tea party movement in the 2012 elections.  The plan was working perfectly to set us up for ultimate victory....

We had 'em on the damn ropes... and then CRUZ had to try a filibuster to call attention to the evils of Obamacare.

What a damn idiot that guy is.

223 189 What I've read from regular people - not the critics who seem to love it - is that there's no plot. Also, Clooney is barely in the movie, so people were disappointed that they implied he was a co-star. I'm not sure I can envision being entertained by Sandra Bullock in deep space for an hour and a half. Posted by: Y-not at October 11, 2013 09:58 PM (5H6zj) The movie is almost a one-woman show. Personally, I could be entertained by Sandra Bullock anywhere, anytime. But I would have gone to see the movie regardless of who was occupying the spacesuits. See some of the user reviews at IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1454468/reviews?filter=best&spoiler=hide Then there's also the thread at NASASpaceflight.com: http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=28092.0 That thread is 16 pages long, and the first seven were from before the movie was released. Warning: The last several pages contain spoilers.

I would not expect that $2400 because their credit department does as little as possible and understands even less. My story: Fraud attack on my bank account ($3100) forced me to close account. Called Duke that day to inform them that they would need to take the automatic funds from another bank account, but was willing to pay any upcoming bills (I have two properties) immediately via the open account or cc. Was told all was fine, plenty of time to change accounts. That was six weeks ago. Duke's credit department is still trying to sort this out. Have received threatening letters calling me a deadbeat more or less on one account and "welcome to automatic bill pay" on the other. Almost daily calls to Duke "customer service" still result in same response: "Our credit department will be reviewing your issue in the near future." Heaven help the working poor that have to deal w these nincompoops.

232 So.  Tonight's dinner is Moose Stew.
Pretty simple really:
1 Savage 99 in .358 Winchester, then:
1/4 lb. butter
1/4 cup flour
2 1/2 lb moose in 1 inch cubes
2 12 oz bottles of Guinness Stout
32 oz beef stock
1 large onion, chopped fine
Roughly chopped:
- 2 carrots
- 2 parsnips
- 1/2 turnip
6 small red potatoes

Coat moose meat cubes with flour, saute in butter till lightly browned.  Put stock and Guinness in 5 qt pot, add onion and veggies.  About 3 1/2 hours at 325.
