Minnesota author Vince Flynn has died after a long battle with prostate cancer.WCCO-TV has learned that Flynn died Wednesday morning at United Hospital in St. Paul.
Flynn has authored 15 novels centered around the character of Mitch Rapp, an undercover CIA agent. The majority of those novels have made it to the New York Times bestseller list.

Many of you have emailed me, messaged me on Facebook, posted on my Facebook page and tweeted about the similarities between the new movie Olympus Has Fallen and my book Transfer of Power. My team and I have noticed the similarities as well and know of a second movie coming out this summer also about an attack on the White House. Neither of these movies are Mitch Rapp movies nor do I have any involvement in either project.
It is very difficult to prove where a producer, director or screenwriter gets an idea, or to prove how their ideas may have been inspired. It is exceptionally difficult to prove in court, costs lots of time and money and usually amounts to a great deal of frustration. My team and I have decided to stay focused on the Rapp Franchise-writing one great Rapp novel a year and getting American Assassin made into a movie.
With Bruce Willis signed and on board to play the surly Stan Hurley, a character that I created with him in mind, things are looking good for a fall shoot. Things will start to move quickly in the coming months as Rapp, Kennedy, Stansfield and others are cast. It will be a very exciting time.
I appreciate you looking out for me, and your concern for my intellectual material. In many ways your comments have allowed me to stay calm and focus on what I love most, which is writing a kick ass Rapp novel. For that I offer you my sincere thanks.

I had a former Navy buddy who lived in OH who got it and it went to the bone before they caught it. The doctors in OH would not even treat it. He went to TX to a special clinic where they tried surgery then returned to OH for chemo. He did not make it 6 months. Once it makes it to the bone it is virtual certainty that you are not going to make it. But if you catch it early the cure rate is near 100%.
This is why those checks, though embarrassing and painful, are so important once you pass 40.

She's undergone surgeries, chemo, radiation, you name it. It really seemed like she'd beaten it. And now she's learned this morning the tumors on her spine are back. She's in extreme pain, and doesn't want visitors.
Her husband has been a rock. Her daughter and son-in-law are nearby (they're in the N. GA mountains) and her son is also not far away.
And yes, she did smoke briefly in her twenties. Her mother died in her forties of lung cancer.

If you notice a change in your normal urinary pattern, hie thy ass to the doctor and ask for a digital exam and a PSA test. Don't put that shit off for 6 months cuz you're 'busy'.

I got to see him speak and briefly meet him at a book signing in New Orleans about three years ago. His love of country and respect for the men and women not only in our armed forces, but in our clandestine services was wonderful to see in such a successful author. Vince was a true insider; politicians, soldiers and intelligence personnel sought him out to tell him their stories and thank him for treating them and their jobs with respect.
Most importantly, he was a husband and a father of three. I can't imagine the hole he will leave in their lives. Like Andrew Breitbart, Vince was a giant in his field and he'll definitely be missed by anyone who considers themselves a patriot.

Don't look at me! My complaint is with the no reflective use of PSA tests (which, absent a long history of baseline values have been shown to be not that great meaning a lot of useless biopsies.)
As much as it stinks, the "digital Rectal exam" is still one of the best diagnostic tools we have for this (the fact that it's cost is effectively nil is a bonus.)

PSA's have proven decent enough for monitoring prostate cancer (especially the type that shows up much later and is slow growing and highly unlikely to kill you.)
But considering "ejaculated within 28-48 hours" is enough to cause a high PSA test...they're pretty useless for most men as a first line screening.
(IIRC they were never meant to be a screening too anyway, they were meant to be a monitoring tool, it's like checking T cells in every person as a way to screen for AIDS.)

EoJ - do it. it's not fun, but I think every man over 40 should start seeing a doc at least semi-regularly for checkups, and especially that bend over one. Getting a baseline on the PSA is also important.
I have high blood pressure and am forced to see my doc at least once a year or he won't refill my prescriptions. I just wish I had picked a woman doctor with slender fingers.. *sigh*

One wonders. There have been billions invested in research, and it is ongoing at an all-time rate. I am NOT a medical guy, or even a studied layman, but it seems that that we can hope for no more than incremental progress. It is a hyper-complex problem, and it manifests itself in a myriad of forms. To know that 'enormous strides have been made' is of little consolation when the reality has to be confronted. Having said that..., I would certainly have preferred that the near-trillion dollars spent on the 'stimulus' had been invested in cancer prevention/treatment, rather than pissed down a hole.

A large (1+) increase in the PSA value over that time period is BAD. Mine went from 8.5 to nearly 10. Time for a biopsy, and quickly too.
Your best chance for survival is to stop it before it spreads beyond the prostate.

Its kind of funny. My regular Dr sent me to the urologist because of a high PSA blood test. That is when the urologist told me that a single test was next to worthless. Since then I have had another PSA which decreases slightly which was also meaningless giving the plus or minus accuracy of the test.
But he has poked his finger up my ass twice now and said slight enlargement but not an issue. Once you get past late 50s enlargement is normal.

Simple stats on the women/men thing.
There's more tissue (and more types of tissue) in the average Woman's breast, meaning they're more likely to get it.
Sadly the people making the rules on these things often don't think about the fact that men (especially slightly overweight men like me) have *some* tissue there, and thus stand a small (but real) chance of breast cancer.
So pretty much everything in that field is driven towards women.
And it's fairly easy to fundraise too, meaning breast cancer research is funded out the Wazoo. It has one of the highest survival rates of adult cancer now too, IIRC, which I guess is a testament to the fact that money can solve some things.

Then, when our son was four months old, Daddy had to have a quadruple by-pass. After that, he was walking one day and had an excruciating pain in his left toe, and barely made it home. He'd had an abdominal aneurism break off and go to the toe.
Over the next five years, he suffered a mild stroke, and then developed kidney cancer. Fell one night on his way to the bathroom and hit his head on the bedroom floor. Died that night, after undergoing emergency surgery from a subdural hematoma. On Mother's Day.
On the upside (if there is one), the docs had told him his kidney cancer would be fatal. So he didn't suffer for months or weeks.

My point is and was that we would have spent the money employing researchers in a worthwhile endeavor, not wasted it on the caprices and fancies of a vain, angry, and greedy woman who has never contributed anything to the common good. True, my Grandmother had breast cancer when she died at age 93, but, she died of old age. They were not even treating her for it. She is not on my "cancer list". As I understand it the problem is the telomeres and their deteriorating ability to be produced over time.

Beto, that definitely sucks. My friend, a CRNA, likes to say that no medical procedure is without risk. I'd still say that following the guidelines on having colonoscopy checkups is worth the hassle.

Cancer is, IMHO, the scariest disease there is, because you just never know if you'll be it's victim. You could leave a blameless, healthy life, be in the peak of physical shape, and BOOM! Cancer. Or you could be a fat layabout with a crap diet and little to no exercise and never even ahve a brush with cancer. It's such a quixotic aggressor; like a psychotic who attacks at random. Maybe the psycho is more likely to attack a woman in red shoes, or a man in a three piece suit, but that doesn't stop the psycho from also attacking a toddler on a tricycle or a grandmother in bedroom slippers "just because."
It's truly frightening, and I mean it when I say I wouldn't wish cancer on my worst enemy. Not even Nazi PeloKKKi or Harry "Hairy Reed" Reid.

Agreed. The human body is a myriad of complex interdependent systems and each tiny little component is fraught with frailty. To suppose that cancer presents the same for each component is silly. It is more a catch phrase to indicate that "wild" tumor cells are attacking that component(s).

My late dad's father, a WWI vet, died of stomach and liver cancer before my parents met. Daddy said he'd get off the elevator at the hospital and he could hear his dad crying in agony all the way down the hall. And this was a man awarded the Croix de Guerre for his service in the war.

Most of those fears are unfounded firstly, and furthermore intentions (and reasonable precautions) do matter.

All things considered it's amazing they were able to reconstruct as much of the plane as they did.
People I know who have seen it in person said there are just boxes of "other stuff" in the warehouse they're pretty sure belongs to other planes, boats, etc.
Just seems like a ton of effort for a cover up.

Skeptical sure, but all the evidence I've seen thusfar is questionable at best. Eyewitness testimony and now this "radar" thing. I'm not even sure how that would work. Our aviation radar wouldn't have the resolution to tell between an external explosion on the tank and an internal one in it would it? (Note they didn't say "an object heading towards the plane" they said "an external explosion." So the radar missed the missile, but caught the really narrow difference between "internal and external" explosion?!)

Yeah, I rarely go to the hospital with a migraine, but, I had one last fall that was so bad, I went. I handed the ER doctor my typed list of allergies and after reading it, he raised his eyebrows, and politely inquired, "Just what was it you want me to do for you?" There was one intravenous drug not yet on the list. So he ordered that. It stopped the headache, but, I was sick for two days from the reaction, so now it is on the list.

Well they think I am. I had a epic bad case of poison ivy years back. Literally head to toe down my right side. (They think someone was burning it behind our house.)
Anyway, I got put on "Atarax." to stop the itching and reduce the rash.
3 days later I broke out in hives. There are two working theories. 1) I really am allergic to an antihistamine or 2) the hives was an over response to the poison ivy after it was mostly gone.
In either case they don't want me taking it again, which always leads to a hilarious set of conversations.
1) Electronic health records spit Atarax out as an "error" when you put it in allergies.
2) I have to explain "yes, I might really be allergic to it, yes, I know it's an antihistamine, no, I don't mean I take that for my allergic reactions. Yes, I know what I'm talking about."

Flight 800 was one of the first stories I experienced in real time, as an adult, where the TV version didn't match up to the information from other sources (in this case, from the Internet, which was relatively new in 1996).
Official policy at the time was that Clinton was charming the world and so we were all safe. The motive to lie was too strong to ignore.

If I had to come up with a "Grassy Knoll" scenario it would be that the plane was struck by a metorite. I was living on Long Island at the time and I remember that there was a large amount of meteorite activity at the time. Since there's really nothing anybody can do to prevent a plane from being struck by a meteorite it makes sense that the government would want to suppress the information in order to not "panic the public".

I hate that Vince is dead. I pre-ordered his next book and could never wait to get his latest. He was a fun author to read. I'll miss him a lot.
