Want A .50 Cal Rifle, New York LEOs? Pound Sand.
— andy

Via Mare at the Splitters comes this heartwarming tale of solidarity among the very small population of manufacturers of rifles chambered for .50 BMG.

XXXX,

Yes, I got the message and tried to return the call but got no answer. I appreciate your interest in our BFG-50A; IÂ’m sure it would be an excellent addition to your departmentÂ’s arsenal. Unfortunately, we have a policy of selling to state law enforcement agencies only what is allowed to be sold to private citizens in that state. Since the passage of the NY SAFE act, the BFG-50A is considered an assault weapon and as such is no longer available to private citizens in the state of New York. Therefore we have to respectfully decline to supply your department with BFG-50A rifles.

Regards,
Mark Serbu

Of course, Ronnie Barrett won't sell to them either.

The reverse-boycott continues apace. Well done, Mr. Serbu.

Also continuing apace ... the Ace-a-Thon. Hobo disposal is expensive, you know.

I guess the next time the police have foreknowledge of the make, model, license number, and target of a truck-borne suicide bomb they can hop right on that.

The .50 cal is primarily an anti-material weapon, meaning lightly armored vehicles like APCs and self-propelled artillery. Any old rifle will punch through an SUV and out the other side. Most likely it's more of the macho bullshit militarization that's going on in law enforcement now. 105 Hmm, this reminds me of something I wanted to throw out there. The opening scene in the first X-man movie is a Senate hearing about the danger of the mutant population. Now I'm aware X-men is a forced gay discrimination analogy, but Jean Gray was using pro-gun talking points to push the mutant side. I.e., Senator: Are mutants dangerous? Jean Gray: The wrong person behind a wheel of a car is dangerous. The whole idea was to block "mutant registration," to which the rejoinder is "what do the mutants have to hide?" So does the comparison hold up?

136 Greetings: What's left of my cranial capacity remembers back a decade or two to a bit of commotion in the law enforcement industry. It seems it's paid members were concerned that their nominal opponents, criminals, that is, were better armed than they were as the latter had semi-automatic pistols while the officers were condemned to the revolvers of the days of yore. Not too long after, our rulers found the wherewithal to supply their officers with semi-automatics with large capacity (10+ rounds) magazines. Now if one follows that logic, it seems peculiar to me that, in states like California, the citizenry is prohibited from having similar weapons to what their actions admit officers need to protect themselves from criminals. This seems to me to be legally unfair in an "equal protection" kind of way and yet there has been no legal challenge in that regard.

139 "Side note: is the 1911 now the legal gun of choice in NY now that Cuomo is adjusting the law to make it barely legal?" Is that what the seven round thing is all about? To allow flush magazines in .45s but nothing more? Even here in Commiefornia we can have ten. I used to have a 9mm with 15 round magazines - the idea was if I was ever in an honest-to-God gunfight I could keep shooting the bad guy until he went down. With a ten round limit I'm thinking "well, I need a more powerful round if I have fewer". Not sure if that's what they intended.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) has emerged as a key player if Senate Democrats are to have any chance of passing legislation to expand background checks for private sales of firearms.   A-hole.

link at drudge.

btw, if only the laws that only the liberals want enforced are selectively enforced, you gain nothing by playing along.  2nd Amendment supporting LEO's, judges and prosecutors should not comply.

198 :::: Is that what the seven round thing is all about? To allow flush magazines in .45s but nothing more? :::: No, Cuomo is making a lot of noise about modding it to 10. Apparently the iota of common sense floating around in his brain informed him that nobody makes 7-round magazines.

202 I have the first season of Walking Dead on disc and have never cracked it. Is it worth a shit, or is everyone just too invested in it, waiting for it to get good?

It's good enough as a novelty. The second season was mostly worthless (it was done in fall/spring parts and the fall was boring as hell). It has been better this season, in the same way that STNG and B5 got better after the first season).

Would you refuse a superior weapon if in this situation? Not all LEO's need 'em but some sure do." Only if they're planning on shooting said gangbangers from 2000 yds. Little hard to order a guy to drop his weapon at that distance. This isn't the kind of rifle you're leveling at a guy from behind your cruiser door. I can't think of a scenario where a cop would need something like this. I'm open to arguments from the other side, but I've never heard a convincing one. Have drug dealers been buying APCs lately?

214 >>>>You know.... those dam 'Oaths' they take? to Enforce the law?<<<<<

Isn't this just another manifestation of checks and balances?
The legislature passes a dipshit constitutionally questionable law and the executive says "enforce it yourself". Isn't that all that really happens when the SCOTUS declares a law unconstitutional? They can't tell the congress what laws to pass or the executive what to enforce (co-equal branches) but they tell the lower courts which cases to hear and which to dismiss.

I still play the old 2d version of Doom. The big fella, Cyberdemon I think they call him, would take a number of BFG hits to kill, but that was just about the only weapon which could put him down. With lesser monsters, the BFG would clear an entire room with one shot.

Posted by: Rule #2 at March 24, 2013 05:17 PM (CypDC)

217 DC, I've taught LEO SWAT in many others. The police aren't out gunned, they are undertrained. That said, more carbines wouldn't be bad idea. I hate seeing the cops deploy tactically with pistols. Each cruiser should have a shotties and a carbine, not just the special guys. The average officer is far more accurate with a carbine, and the rounds have the same down range lethality.

This is a no-brainer anyway.  If civilians don't "need" a .50BMG, why the hell would law enforcement "need" one?

Kudos to the gun guys.

234 Hopefully the beginning of denying the little fuckers a whole lot more. Someone, I think it was here, pointed out that the US Government does not have any of its own arsenals any more; EVERYTHING comes from private industry. What private industry giveth, private industry can taketh away. When they go after the private industry, that's when you know it's no longer a democracy.

236 ...the hell does LE need a .50 for anyway?  I'm no expert on marksmanship, but I know a couple guys who are.  Unless your target is at 1.4 miles or you're shooting through a building, you don't need a .50.  There's not application for that in LE.

A well-placed 7.62x59 round at 150 meters will do just fine for LE.  Outside of that?  You're going to be justifying your shoot to the AUSA and will likely get to spend time picking up the soap.
