Weekend Obamacare Roundup And Open Thread
— Gabriel Malor

Just some stories of Obamacare I saw in the morning papers.

Insurers say CMS is overstating the Healthcare.gov backend fixes. "Insurers said that they had previously reported many of the errors to the “help desk” at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and that the problems remained unresolved."

California is sending "insurance educators" to colleges to tempt young invincibles onto the California exchange. "In California, a bellwether state, about 22% of those who enrolled in coverage over the first two months came from the under-35 target audience." Estimates are they need 40% of enrollees to be from the young demographic.

The lagging Hispanic enrollment rate in California is raising red flags for exchanges nationwide. "Hispanics are a linchpin of the health-care law because they constitute more than a third of the estimated 29 million people who are eligible to buy coverage on the online insurance exchanges."

The D.C. exchange is trying to woo young invincibles at Denny's and Footlocker. Because everybody loves being bothered by annoying people with clipboards while trying to eat or shop or just walk down the sidewalk.

Consider this the Open Thread for purposes of the Football Thread above.

8 Why Denny's? Is Denny's run by a big prog and McDonalds said no? Not a big young people hang out as far as I know although lots of young people work at them. Foot locker? Why not game stop?

Lynchpin, you say? But isn't the narrative that these people couldn't afford it before - so they'll be using a lot of subsidies to purchase a plan and/or go on Medicaid? Bring on the death spiral!!

But, hey, if they really are that important to the program's success, maybe HHS should have completed the Spanish language version of the site before December 13th?

36 >>So this black Santa kerfuffle is really becoming a thing isn't it?

Saw the snarky story on CNN, too, and they took such glee in showing Megyn being mocked on SNL and Comedy Central. The CNN host and the Slate writer who started this all then joked about what a racist idiot Megyn was - all while piously lamenting that Megyn just wasn't taking the racial sensitivities of others seriously.

They're using the Destroy Palin template: Back in 2008, the MSM would put out a Palin is stupid/silly/crazy story, then SNL and Comedy Central would do a bit mocking her, then the MSM "news" programs (especially MSNBC) would replay these clips over and over.

I brought up the topic of Kwanza and Kwansa Klause due to the nature of people not being able to make declarative statements as to the race of legends and folk lore characters.

Last I checked, there were not a lot of black Nordic types several hundred years ago.

But, I am certain that if a character emerged from African culture as a saint, and giver of presents and gifts, their skin and physical features would be presented as black.

Funny that.

President ObamaÂ’s flirting with DenmarkÂ’s prime minister would be shameful on any occasion. That it happened at the memorial for Nelson Mandela only adds to the embarrassment.

But the “selfie” episode also symbolizes the greater global calamity of Western decline. With British prime minister David Cameron playing the role of Obama’s giggling wingman, the “look at me” moment confirms we have unserious leaders in a dangerously serious time.

150 CC, I had to admit my mother to a mental hospital because she was at home with Alzheimer's & was violent & home alone 3-4 hours a day. Doctor told us what hospital to take her to. It was a scary place, locks on all the doors, we couldn't get in or out unless they let us in. They told us not to visit for four or five days, and my mother must have been scared. We listened to her doctor. I wish I had called one of my older cousins because there is a similar unit for elderly psychiatric patients that does not have locked doors & encouraged us to visit & often. I found that out almost a year later, my mother was in a nursing home & I won't bring up all the issues at that place because it will make my BP go up, & they wanted to send her for an evaluation. That time I called my cousin first& she told me about the other hospital & I insisted my mother go there. She had no behavioral issues, she had a urinary tract infection & that can make elderly people, especially with Alzheimer's act up. Please make sure your niece is in the second type of hospital.

151 Since this is an open thread: I think my sisters Bug (Boston Terrier-Pug mix) just ate a rat. It sure looked like a naked grey tail slurping into his mouth at least. Should I be worried? Both for him and the fact that there appears to have been a rat outside my house.

Probably want to worm him.  Get the medication from a vet, not Safeway.

153 @ 151

"Probably want to worm him. Get the medication from a vet, not Safeway."

Also, Mrs. jbarntt, who is a licensed vet tech, said to watch for sickness. If the rat had eaten rat poison, so has the dog.

Posted by: jbarntt at December 15, 2013 01:40 PM (UNFot)

154 Best advice would be get the dog to a vet. Rat poison is usually a massive dose of blood thinner, which causes internal bleeding.

155 "Hispanics are a linchpin of the health-care law because they constitute more than a third of the estimated 29 million people who are eligible to buy coverage on the online insurance exchanges." Really? What kind of linchpin do they constitute - the part where the subsidies come from, or the part where the subsidies go?
