Elliot Spitzer's Not Sorry and As Much As Says So
— Ace

No not really. That's just bein' silly. Here's the real headline:

Elliot Spitzer's Not Sorry and As Much As Says So

It's one thing for someone to confess fault and acknowledge others have the right to render a moral judgment on him. The contrite man may offer reasons why they should be merciful in their judgments, but he'll acknowledge that others do have the right to judge him by his actions.

Elliot Spitzer doesn't concede you have the right to judge him for breaking the law while the chief law enforcement officer of a state, or of going after some mob-connected prostitution rings and yet not others.

He insists is none yo' bizness.

Asked by Mika Brzezinski about the various tabloid headlines bashing his past indiscretions, Spitzer replied: “I am mystified by the attention and the focus on that.”

Spitzer really revealed his thinking, however, in a back and forth with TimeÂ’s Mark Halperin.

“There is a difference between public and private lives,” Spitzer said in response to a question about whether lying to the public was disqualifying for a public official. “There is a divide there that is something we do want to think about at a certain point and time.” We all know politicians dissemble all the time about negotiations on substantive issues and probably on personal issues as well.” [Funky logic-breaking quotation marks in original.]

Later, Spitzer added: “I lied about personal sexual activity.”

Chris Cilliza concludes Spitzer is merely sorry he got caught, which is entirely different from being contrite. A contrite man doesn't constantly argue that what he did wasn't all that bad and Everyone Does It and Why Don't You Just Mind Your Own.

The sky-high payments, unheard of in city petition drives, reflect Spitzer’s deep pockets, his determination to succeed — and the desperate straits his candidacy is in.

What I find really troubling, is the Voters are more interested in 'what will you give me'... vice having someone they can trust as their Elected Representative.

Case in point?  The Clintons.  He LIED to us... which is a real moral problem... for once he lies to you, how can you trust him.... SHE LIED to us... as there is NO way for her to be stupid enough NOT to have known....

And then they stayed together in a sham of a Political Marriage... for appearance sake...

Now... how can anyone TRUST HER?  Yet... there is serious talk of her being the next PRECEDENT?

Our system only works if we have a Majority of Moral people in Power... if we do not have them as a check on the Power of Evil Untrustworthy people.... the system WILL Fail....

And it is... when the Precedent can announce that he will NOT follow the Law???? When he will not ENFORCE the LAW?  and there seems to be no way to FORCE him to enforce the Law?  AND he has no American Morals?

Done...

89 ** "There is a difference between public and private lives," Spitzer said in response to a question about whether lying to the public was disqualifying for a public official. **

Yes, there is, but his desire to lie publicly about his private life knowing that it would have a direct, negative impact on his public life means a lot more than him lying to a personal friend about his golf score or to his buddy about being able to pay back the $50 he borrowed. Plus, let's not forget, that Spitzer was lying about behavior in which he broke the law -- a law in which he used to personally prosecute others.

Everybody tells lies or half-truths at some point in their lives for various motivations -- some selfish (e.g., hiding misbehavior), some selfless (e.g., trying to avoid hurting someone) -- but some lies and the behavior that the lies are covering up should disqualify an individual from serving in a public position. This is one of those situations.

There are other things you can do with your life other than elective office and public service, Spitzer. So go do them.

104 #58  This supports my theory that someone in the DOJ was combing through Florida police reports looking for a white on black crime.  They thought they had hit the lottery with Zimmerman,  mistakenly thinking he was a white Jew.

Too late,  and all the rest of this has been the administration (" If I had a son he would look just like Trayvon")  and the media (doctored 911 tapes by NBC, creation of the term "white Hispanic" by the NYT) frantically trying to get a race war started using this case.

Disgraceful but not surprising.

Separately, in response to a Florida Sunshine Law request to the City of Sanford, Judicial Watch also obtained an audio recording of a “community meeting” held at Second Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Sanford on April 19, 2012. The meeting, which led to the ouster of SanfordÂ’s Police Chief Bill Lee, was scheduled after a group of college students calling themselves the “Dream Defenders” barricaded the entrance to the police department demanding Lee be fired.  According to the Orlando Sentinel, DOJ employees with the CRS had arranged a 40-mile police escort for the students from Daytona Beach to Sanford.

183 Reality is Wall Street money lets NYC do stupid stuff longer than other cities and recover quicker. NYC won't become Detroit as long as it has Wall Street. Look how much stupidity Chicago has engaged in, but it's still far from Detroit. The next Detroit is, in my opinion, likely Atlanta. It's been losing out to cities like Charlotte, Raleigh, and Nashville. As the good and decent and responsible move away, the remaining voters are dumber, lazier, and more corrupt.

No.  There's only one Bay Area, thank goodness.  Even Los Angeles isn't as bad as the Bay Area...  Also, I read an article earlier this year that suggests that the state Republicans are starting to regain ground in the Central Valley because the locals there are finally starting to realize that a stupid fish is destroying the area's primary source of income - i.e. farming.

In some ways, I think the media is missing the bigger story on Spitzer. Spitzer's biggest offense (in my mind anyway) was his use of the power of government to bully his opponents and make a name for himself. He relentlessly pursued Wall Street -- in a bad way -- and used the power of the law to do it. For all his sanctimony, he was not willing and able to abide by the same laws he so mercilessly held other people to.

In a weird way, Spitzer's situation reminds me of the parable of the unmerciful servent that I remember from Sunday School:

Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him. Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.

"The servant fell on his knees before him. ‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’ The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go.

"But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii. He grabbed him and began to choke him. ‘Pay back what you owe me!’ he demanded.

"His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.’

"But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. When the other servants saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed and went and told their master everything that had happened.

"Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ In anger his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.

Well they were admitted to the union on their own petition based on the premise that they were "Colorado" So I think not only would the state have to agree to split...both halves, but the Congress who admitted them in the first place would also have to agree.

That's why California will never be split into two states. The majority in the South that exploit the minority in the north would never allow their personal water supply it's own sovereignty, because then we could charge them for the water they take from us, or, not give it to them at all and reinvigorate our farming communities.

In California haven't many parts of LA tried to secede, but LA won't let them?

-----------

I don't think so.  I could be mistaken, but I don't think that it's the city proper that most of the unincorporated areas try to secede from.  Instead, I think it's primarily the LA Unified School District.  The district covers the entirety of unincorporated LA, which essentially means that anywhere in the county is potentially a part of the district.  It's too big, and everyone knows it, and it has problems in part because of that.  But the city can't afford to split the district up because then it wouldn't be able to use the richer areas (who would split off into their own school district) to subsidize the poorer areas.

The city doesn't seem to have an issue with alternate arrangements.  Pasadena, which is an incorporated city, essentially runs all of the public services (police, fire, school, etc...) in adjacent Altadena, which is an unincorporated part of LA.

I believe that the statehood question could get on the ballot, and that it would pass. Not sure the CO legislature would present it to Congress for their consideration. I was thinking more just on a conceptual level if citizens in a state should be able to determine if and how to break up a state. The practicalities of it are probably too daunting at this time to make it a realistic option but purely in theory, I don't necessarily have a problem with it. The CA water rights issues could start a war. Aren't there still a bunch of active border disputes between the states? I vaguely recall there's an Ohio/Michigan border one and something about water rights in Delaware maybe. There's a big stink going on along the NC/SC border because GPS is being used to firm up some lines and now people are finding out they are going to be moved to another state.

338 Most appellate courts are rubber stamps for the prosecution. If Z is convicted, he is 99% fucked.

Posted by: real joe at July 10, 2013 10:13 AM (y1DP7)

339 334 Even if the state gets a conviction, this will be tossed so fast on appeal that it isn't funny. Yeah, but will Zimmerman have enough money to file the appeal? There are other ways to punish someone. --- I think his lawyers may be willing to work pro bono for a while considering the publicity they're getting out of this case. They're dick-slapping the prosecution on national TV and looking like the next OJ Dream Team lawyers.

340 Spitzer , Weiner, Kill them all. They are the worst elites in politics. Don't just kill them, poison them, then hang them, then stab them, then shoot the fuck out of them. If if I had my way, I would haul them out into the wastelands, put an IV drip into their lying asses (to make them live longer) and peel their lying asses layer by layer like an onion to make their suffering legendary even in Hell. I bet blue NY votes them in and sucks their jam! Dumbasses! Dem Idiots! Hey NSA and Obama ..Fuck you. I live in the land of no extradition, and if you try the extreme rendition bullshit on me, me and my people will impale your agents on pikes and post it on the Inet.

A Republic is based on the rule of Law... if the law is not enforced equally, a Republic cannot exist.

I have said it before... they are trying to destroy the very foundation of this country, ie, the rule of Law.... this is part of the direct assault on 'the Republic, for which it stands"...

Ben Franklin was Prophetic.... 'a Republic Maam, if you can keep it'...

Nothing is harder to do than to keep  an innocent defendant from testifying.  This scrunt judge just knows that Z wants to get up there and set the record straight.  But it's the dumbest thing he can do right now.

I think West is trying to tell this to Z and keep him from being bullied onto that stand by the Judge.

345 What is the appeal reversal for murder convictions? If it's more than 5% I'd be surprised.

346 Press him to waive a right while sitting with the power of contempt above him with every question you ask?

Do ya think that *might* be appealable there Juris Doctor? Maybe? God I wonder what people learn in law school sometimes. Law is just a hobby of mine and I know that fails about 16 different tests for what you *cant* do.

352 There is no law anymore. Barky chooses by decree which laws to enforce and which enemy (thats ya'all) to crush. Time to pick up them guns and travel to DC. I would take a stealth plane back for that, kissing the wavetops. But then again. I wake up angry and in a bad mood everyday!

353 How about this, Spitznotswallowz: you engaged in a criminal conspiracy to use your office to eliminate your madam's competition. How's them apples, buddy? what? you say it ain't so? who am I going to believe, you or my lying eyes?

355 If I read the prosecution right here, their line of questioning is that it was TWO black males that broke into her house and that proves GZ was racially motivated b/c TM was solo.

And also that, given that she and GZ may have speculated as to where the two lived, that somehow proves motive to kill TM.

Holy shit. Kangaroo, kangaroo, kangaroo.

Posted by: RoyalOil at July 10, 2013 10:59 AM (VjL9S)

356 And that the fact that the two prior perps got away PROVES GZ was on a mission of revenge.

This fucker for the state is evil.

All he wants is a scalp and he don't fucking care about justice.

357 Can you imagine Spitzer, as New York AG or New York County DA, faced with a guy caught doing what he got caught doing, buying the public-private thing with a straight face, let alone letting the guy go? Yeah, no. Me either.

358 The sad part of the :weiner/schnitzel debacle is that, were they republicans the left would be out in the streets with tar, pitch forks and lanterns demanding that they not run for office again, ever.

Ah, the double standard, alive and well and living in merica"
