Welcome to Soviet AoSHQ ONT [krakatoa]
— Open Blogger

Where the comment lines are long and we have no bread.

In Soviet AoSHQ ONT, the comments entertain the Blog!

I've just checked into my hotel for the night, and saw there was no ONT on deck and a missive from Maetenloch for a fill in. So here comes a really crappy stripped-down ONT.

First though, a rant: There are ants on my hotel-room desk.

Ants I said. I'm pretty brand-loyal, but this chain has one marque that has really gone off the rails.

I'm not one to name names, so let's just call it ArriottMay YortCard. They've stopped with the free breakfasts and the free coffee in the lobby, and instead they've installed "Bistros" in all their lounges. They claim polling showed people didn't want free coffee 24-7 and a breakfast buffet, and instead wanted to wait in line in the morning for microwave shit on a shingle and the crappy Arbucksstay Creosote in a cup that everyone is brain-washed into thinking is Gen-U-Ine good joe!

The hell I say. I've had better coffee from a gas-station at 2 a.m.

/Rant off.

So everyone talks the talk. "They took er jobs! Ahm goin Galt!"

Allow the most interesting man in Chile to retort: "I rarely claim I am going Galt. But when I do, I don't fuckin' pussyfoot around a timetable. And I don't come back!"

Yeah. That didn't work.

I have no idea of that embed script is going to work, and I'm not going to spend all night trying to make it work -- so if nothing else, the video is here:

http://www.vice.com/far-out/faustinos-patagonian-retreat-full-length

Anyone else just get their concealed carry permit? Mine came in the mail last week, and I am in the market for either a .380 or 9mm. Checking out the Ruger LCP & LC9. I like the Taurus TCP as well. I love the idea of pocket carry, which the .380's are perfect for, but I also can't deny that a 9 has just a bit more oomph.

Here's a vid with a comparison between 4 micro .380's. I'm not a fan of the Kel-Tecs myself, but I know they have their proponents.

At the risk of starting a longbow-vs-crossbow debate, give me your best arguments for your favorite conceal weapon. And no, a Mossberg 500 doesn't count.

Yes, I have at least one other handgun right now *, but it's a little larger than I'm comfortable carrying in the summertime.

This post has been brought to you by fair warnings.

* Call me crazy, but I'm just not all that comfortable listing what I might or might not own in public forums anymore. I reserve the right to say in some dark future "Oh no, I sold that firearm years ago", and let the prove otherwise.

"Live ActionÂ’s undercover journalist went to  a Bronx abortion clinic to discuss the potential outcomes of a 23-week abortion — thatÂ’s nearly 6 months along — and got the kind of advice that one would expect from Kermit Gosnell himself:"

Here is one of the "people" the JEF asked God to bless...

“Like, what if it was twitching?” asked the pregnant woman.

“The solution will make it stop,” said the clinic employee. “That’s the whole purpose of the solution . . . It will automatically stop. It won’t be able to breathe anymore.”

As for any qualms a woman might have about seeing her newborn child being poisoned and drowned in a jar, the employee advised her “patient” not to worry: She’d be under sedation, and the murder would take place in another room anyway.

The employee said, humorously, that “the doctor” is “not gonna wake you up and be like, ‘Hey, excuse me, you have—’ ”

The sentence was left unfinished, too unthinkable even for a euphemism. There’s no polite way to say, “You have just given birth, but we will murder the child.”

37 I have a Ruger LCP. I bought it over a year ago. The first 150 rounds down range all fired without incident. Then, I started getting failure to feed from the magazine. Next, came stove piping. Finally, I ended up with a live round stuck in the chamber. I couldn't eject the round by racking the slide. I had to take the gun apart to remove the round.

This is going back to Ruger. Also, I have a Ruger SP101 that I had to send back. I'm pissed.

My go to CCW gun is a Smith & Wesson 642 CT. It is an airweight, hammerless. 38 spl +P rated revolver. It works flawlessly and would be a fine summer time hand gun.

50 Krak, I shot an LC9 for the first time last weekend. It shot really well, and I loved the sights, which are more substantial than you see in handguns of that size. One thing I dislike is that it has a magazine safety. It appears to be pretty easy to disable that "feature" though.

52 If you're looking for a nice .380 acp, I'd have to recommend the Sig P232. In stainless steel, I'd have to say it's the prettiest pistol I've ever shot. It holds 7 rounds, and is nice and slim for easy carry. It's got rounded off edges so there's nothing to get snagged either. The only complaint I have is the mag release is on the bottom of the grip, european style, not up on the frame of the pistol like most are used to. It has a bit of mass to it, more than some of the small ultra lite compacts, so the recoil is quite manageable. Not cheap, but hey, you pay for what you get.

64 Those are good choices for concealed carry. I personally carry a 642 Airweight revolver, because it can fit in a pocket, and in a moment of adrenaline rush I don't have to remember if I've already racked a load or if the farking safety's off. Point and shoot. And if 5 .38 + P hollow points aren't enough to resolve the situation I'm in a firefight I was already gonna lose.

73 Well, I have a P3AT, and I like it.  When I first got it, though, it jammed a lot.  I sent it to Kel-tec and they really took care of it - replaced the slide, and buffed and fluffed it.  Now it cycles just fine.  With the Clipdraw I attached to it, I can carry it and it is virtually invisible.  Like any 380, the recoil is kinda snappy, but it fills the niche for which it is intended.

77 For concealed carry I have two pistols that I carry-not at the same time- the FEG PA-63 with some grip tape on vital areas and a heavier recoil spring and a lighter hammer spring. It's basically a clone of the Walther PPK in 9x18 Makarov, with an aluminum frame. Made in Hungary, probably on machinery left by the Nazis. accurate, reliable, inexpensive, concealable, holds 7 +1. The other is a CZ-82, quality all the way around, can be carried locked and cocked, or in double action with the hammer down, holds 12 +1 Makarov rounds, not pretty, but very well made and a great value for the $- it's a CZ after all. You can argue caliber& stopping power all day long, but it's like real estate- it's all about location- where you put the rounds. I have bigger pistols, but this is what I CC.

82 in today's NYPost from an abortion clinic in the Bronx The Bronx clinic hasn’t been accused of any such wrongdoing. But as Rose puts it, “People need to understand what a late-term abortion is.” Aborting a fetus at 23 weeks in Pennsylvania or New York is perfectly legal, no matter how awful the details. And the details can be as horrific as what happened as Gosnell’s clinic. After the pregnant woman pressed the employee at the Bronx establishment, “If it’s twitching or breathing or something, like whatever showing signs of life or something, I’m not gonna have to, they’re not gonna be like you have to take this home like,” the employee replied, “No! No!” The employee also advised the pregnant woman to murder her child should the infant unexpectedly be born at home. “I don’t want to like go into labor at home,” the pregnant woman said. “Like what if it like pops out, like, at home?” “If it comes out then it comes out. 86 The other is a CZ-82, quality all the way around, can be carried locked and cocked, or in double action with the hammer down, holds 12 +1 Makarov rounds, not pretty, but very well made and a great value for the $- it's a CZ after all. CZ82 is a nice pistol. It has an extremely light trigger, so careful trigger discipline is essential.

Is there anything he can do? I'm assuming the Egyptian govt is no help?

Only found out less than 24 hours ago - he says he has contacted law enforcement, but really has no idea what to do next. Some of the folks on facebook were advising him to contact the consulate, and there is evidently a department devoted to these sort of situations, but just a few days ago Fox had an article about a woman that had to go to Egyopt herself and snatch her son back - very similar situation to this one, just with the gender of the parents reversed.

I knew that my uncle had gotten involved with a Muslim woman (and a sketchy-sounding mosque), but I somehow missed that they were actually married for a couple years and had a daughter. It makes me wonder if my uncle didn't actually convert - since his belief system seems to be dictated by who he is married to at the moment (ex-wife is his fourth, ironically enough) it is quite possible.

I got a Tokavev M213 in 9mm instead (a Chinese copy of a Soviet design that the Soviets ripped off from J.M.Browning, PBUH. If that just doesn't scream quality....) Unfortunately, I lost that pistol in a weird boating accident, ten years ago this July 4th. It was the Annual Row Your Guns Across the Mill Pond day, and I was about half-way across when a freak storm came up from outta nowhere. The wind shear sank my inflatable scow; I was lucky to escape with my life.

152 For the first time since a similar question was asked in May 2001, more Americans answered “no” to the question, “Would you be willing to give up some of your personal freedom in order to reduce the threat of terrorism?” Of those surveyed on April 16, 2013, 45 percent answered no to the question, compared to 43 percent answering yes. In May 2001, before 9/11, the balance was similar, with 40 percent answering no to 33 percent answering yes. But following the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the numbers flipped dramatically, to 71 percent agreeing to sacrifice personal freedom to reduce the threat of terrorism.

Yep. War is violence done for selfish ends. For the Left, it's struggle! Even if some people's lives end up shorter than they would be otherwise, it's for the cause, and certainly not the result of some icky war.

187 Hah! Typing this from a ArriotMay YortCard. The Bistros are bullshit. No ants on my desk, but it does look like something I would find in a college dorm. Water stains all over, scratches everywhere and wobbly to boot. Hooray for rethinking things! Also not a fan of the new Doubletrees by Hilton. I guess they are buying up "boutique" hotels and rebranding them Doubletrees. Umm, no. If I want a boutique hotel I will fucking book a boutique hotel. If I book a Hilton, or a DoubleTree, I want consistency. Not weirdo crooked rooms in San Antonio or some washed up Holiday Inn in an office park in Boston. Just, no. As for a carry gun - I am partial to Sigs. Someone upthread mentioned a P229. I have one and love it, but Sig makes guns designed for carry. Check out the P290 - lightweight, 9mm and it's a Sig. More expensive than some others mentioned, but...well, when you need it the thing had better go bang.

Young and stupid. I rejected the evidence of my own senses, shrugged it off, and only later found out that "waterbug" is what Floridians call cockroaches. I was taken, but good.

253 I've carried several pistols in various rigs, but found myself gravitating to pocket pistols for most wear...in the winter, they fit in my overcoat's slash pockets, and in summer shorts or a pant pocket are sufficient. I carried an LCP at first, but the thing was very unpleasant to fire, especially the trigger. Bumped into a cop at a range who had a Kel-Tec PF9, and I was impressed...9mm with more manageable recoil, much better trigger, and only slightly larger. I bought one a couple months ago, and haven't had any issues. If you can go slightly larger, and have a little more money, CZs are great. Get a P-01, send it to cajungunworks.com for a trigger/action job, and you'll be pleased.

282 Ants I said. I'm pretty brand-loyal, but this chain has one marque that has really gone off the rails. Yeah, I stayed at one of those hotels in NY....they charged me for everything, on top of the base nightly charge for my room. Breakfast consisted of a selection of fruit, breads, and juices...along with coffee....for the low, low price of fifteen dollars. Internet ran another 12 dollars per day. Parking cost me 8 dollars per day, per vehicle, with a surcharge for my oversize bucket truck. In all, just for a rack to sleep in, something to eat in the morning, email, and parking, I was spending over 200 dollars per night. I wasn't paying that...the company I contract with got the bill. I'm rather cost conscientious anyway, and if I can save a few bucks, I will....it's a value added thing. By shopping around, and expanding the distance I'm willing to drive each day to work, I've managed to cut that 229 dollar nightly bill down to 89 dollars. I have a decent room....included internet, complimentary breakfast that includes things like eggs, and sausage, (along with all the usual continental b'fast fare), free coffee 24 hours a day, free parking, (and they have no problem with my keeping two vehicles on their property). I have lots of equipment shipped to me each week...the staff stacks it up for me, and often times puts it all in my room before I get back at the end of the day. There's no swimming pool, or sauna, or shuttle service, (and I don't miss them). I signed up for their rewards program, mostly to help defray the cost of taking the family on vacations. I have to drive an extra eight miles to get to DC...and it's a long eight miles, thanks to usually heavy traffic, and annoyingly long, and unsynchronized traffic lights. But overall, I'm more comfortable here, with less to worry about. And in closing.....I found at one hotel in Canada, a complimentary bottle of water waiting for me in my room upon arrival. Only after cracking it open, and drinking it down did I read the cute little card that it came with. The water cost me four bucks. Or so they thought. I refilled the bottle from their tap, capped it, and and tacked the little broken plastic tab things around the cap with a soldering iron. I also rubbed my junk all over the mouthpiece of the in-room phone.

I usually carry a Glock Mod.36 in a Tauris ankle holster.  The Glock is a .45 and has very nice ergonomics for me.  I have fired hundreds of rounds through it and have found it to be very reliable.  The Mod.36 is not much bigger than a large .380, such as the Walther PPK/S I sold to get the Glock.

When I wear a pair of shorts in the summer, I will switch to a Berretta Tomcat in .32ACP and carry it in a pocket holster.  The .32 is a bit anemic, but the Tomcat is tiny and a mouse-gun is better than no gun.

312 Guns. Concealed Carry. Reliability. By now, everyone has realized that guns are sensitive to ammunition quality and power, correct? Enough power to ensure that the bullet always leaves the barrel is given. Revolvers are sensitive to power; at and above a certain level, the gun starts "loosening up", and starts becoming unreliable. 2 cures: 1) buy enough quality gun (brand, price, many reviews) for the loads to be used (and maybe 1 load level up), and 2) DON'T USE the specified load all the time. The gun is not self-healing; it will eventually have to have maintenance. Preferably, "eventually" is not every 6 months. Automatics are sensitive to power "zone"; too much is bad, but not enough, and the gun fails to operate correctly. This is especially noticeable in Desert Eagles. The .357 version will even fire .38 Specials, but as a pump-action pistol. Correct, expected, auto-loading operation requires quality, and sufficiently powerful, ammunition. The instructions even specify brands and loads. .380 automatics are smaller weapons, and have less friction, weaker springs, etc., than larger, say 9mm, pistols, but the loadings are very much less powerful than 9mm loads. Figure, then, the odds that most .380 automatics would be more prone to jam. --> My opinion <-- then, is that for smaller automatics, spending extra coins to get a better-quality pistol (Walther, H&K, SIG), and buying better-quality ammunition (handloads, if they're known to be reliable and reliably made), are necessary steps for depending on a smaller automatic for personal protection. 328 Ok, let's do hotel horror stories. I'll start. When my husband was 18 a bunch of.his friends came down to Austin to drink and be annoying 18 year olds. To facilitate maximum douchebaggary, they got a hotel room. Of course since they were 18, their finances were limited. The Roadside Inn was the obvious choice. They walked to the door of the first room, but quickly turned around when they realized that it had recently been kicked in. The manager seemed apathetic, but gave them a new room. This one had functioning.locks, but also a blood stain under the table. Apparently that was acceptable because they stayed there and did shots to character deaths in Young Guns. The night ended with my husband passed out in a bath tub, and far more bodily fluids joining the blood on the carpet.

One of the reasons for that is that hotels are getting out of washing sheets each day by claiming they are "going green" and only doing that upon request.

Going Green = Going Third World

Yes, exactly. Conserve water, conserve power = third world poverty. The American Way is to f'ing figure out how to make more! Hell, water doesn't disappear, and power can be made from atoms. Just because the Left's religion requires phony shortages and privations doesn't mean we all have to wear their hair shirt.

A tip about tips: I make it a point to leave a buck or two (depending on the level of the hotel) for Housekeeping every day. When I do that, they ALWAYS wash the sheets and towels, whatever the stupid "Go Green" laminated card says.

Gah! Mrs. Chronda just booked a room at the ArriotMay YortCard in NaheimNay for Blizzcon just moments before I read the ONT. She didn't score tickets (although she'll doubtless be scouring eBay soon), but it makes little difference to me; I tend to waste my Blizzcon time in the hotel room playing with LEGO and/or offbrand plug-compatible building bricks anyway.

350 My grandparents, God rest their conservative souls, lived in Leesburg FL, about an hour north of Orlando.  When I was around 10 years old and visiting, we went out one day and I'd grabbed my slip-on shoes to put on in the car.  Sitting in the backseat of that powder blue Ford Fairmont, a ginormous black bug about the size of my foot crawled out of the shoe I'd been carrying moments before. I screamed bloody murder and nearly killed gramps who had a heart condition and nearly wrecked the car.

Still, that bug.

371 My preference : KelTec P32 32 ACP. The 32 is lighter than the .380, the 32 is inherently more accurate, and the difference in stopping power is non existent. 32 JHP is slightly more expensive, but? The KelTec disappears in a pants pocket with a spare mag or two in the offhand side, and 10 round 32 mags weigh about what the standard capacity 380 mag weighs. In addition, I have yet to find a decent shooting lightweight 380. If you're determined to go bigger than 32, get a S&W J Frame. The Model 342 has a concealed hammer that makes pocket carry a breeze and they are what the 380 ain't... easy to hit with. Just my 2 cents.

426 In South America, they have spiky microfish that swim up your urethra and get lodged in there. They don't "get" lodged, they stick their fucking spikes out to purposely stay there. I learned about these fun things when I was a lowly LT based in Panama. About 6 months later I find myself in Peru, in a city on the Amazon, with the opportunity to drink beer and go water skiing on the Amazon. Who could say no to that? My only (emphatic) instruction to the (half-drunk) boat driver was to keep me out of the inside of the turns in the river. That was where the river flow was the slowest, and also where all of the bad shit hung out (pirahnas, penis-fish, etc). I got up, did about one minute on the skis and called it good. Get me the hell OUT of this river and into the boat! And to this day I can still tell the story about water-skiing the Amazon! Hooray for stupid stunts while young!

When confronted, the goblin raised the crowbar at Lonnie, and charged him.
Lonnie shot him twice, center-mass with the .380 Winchester silver tips.

The large man charged him and chased him for almost a block, with the crowbar, before he realized he was dead, as Lonnie had shot him twice in the heart...

the soldiers roaring with approval. It made me feel good and I would
like to see it again. I've tried googling for it, but GWB is completely
poisoned in the Google search if you know what I mean. Thanks in
advance!

539 hmmm...concealed carry weapon.   Well I did everything wrong to conventional thinking.  Bought an old Browning Hi-Power because I thought (and still do) it had great lines.  About the tenth round out of the weapon the rear sight flew off and I sent it back to Browning and had them install an adjustable rear sight.  But I practiced with it and learned to reload 9mm.  The local range I shoot at had a 900fps limit for rounds at the time and some gunsmith in Germany that I knew over the internet taught me to stone the hammer back to actually get such low velocity rounds to work.  Long story short I just learned the weapon.  I have a custom 1911 (45acp)  that I shot a lot more that the Hi-Power,at the time, just cuz I wanted to be able to hit with the .45 as well as the 9mm, but that never happened.

So...when we got concealed carry here in Ohio I sent my trusty beat to hell Hi-Power to Wayne Novack's gun shop for reliability and accuracy work (pretty much required for all older Hi-Powers' and 1911s').  He also made it very...very pretty.  I wouldn't be ashamed to go to a Sunday Texas Barbeque with that pistol.

This is not advise, just my experience.

549 Since, in a fit of madness, I got the Wii U, I've acquired about forty Wii games. Plus I had a few I picked up over the years in anticipation of someday having a Wii when it was cheap enough but the games were dirt cheap right then and there.

But keep in mind I was getting these for ten bucks or less. A five dollar game doesn't have to be great to be worthwhile if it does something interesting. The only remaining items for the Wii to be acquired are Mario Galaxy 2, the 2D Mario entry, some of the RPGs Dude listed and that is it. And I may never get any of those if the price isn't right.

I have way too much cheap but good stuff lying around to even think of paying more.

556 Why is the Mushroom Kingdom ruled by someone of another species? This seems to come up a lot in Japanese culture. On one of the biggest anie series of the 80s, Uresei Yatsura, one of the recurring characters was Oyuki, Princess of the Tengu. She ruled over a race of demons/aliens that looked like crows and were of that size, while Oyuki appeared entirely human, definitely mammalian, and only acknowledging her relation to her subjects with her odd winged hairdo.

1. Sing the words to "Amazing Grace" to the melody of "The House of the Rising Sun".
2. Sing the words to the "Gilligand's Island" theme song to the melody of "The House of the Rising Sun".
If neither work, drink yourself to sleep, as I have nothing better.

598 I had a .380 colt government, i changed out the plastic trigger for metal and put on some wood grips. It was stainless and I carried it in a sheep wool IWB holster for about 10 years. I loved it at the range and as an everyday carry. It was also on the nightstand every night and able to be fired nicely by my wife. Consider it, or not, i don't care.

From CA? I could probably get the same effect from going up to visit my sister in the north-west corner of WA. I'd need a lot more than a car wash to get me all the way across the continent. Say, a good job for a few weeks, with them picking up the mileage.

602 Yeah but going to new places and getting paid for it is pretty nice. I don't get t do it nearly as often as I'd like.

OTOH, I know people who travel a lot for work but it's all flying and they're given almost no time before or after, so they hardly see any of the places they go. I know one guy who did IT for Carnival Cruise lines. They fly him to Italy to meet a ship in port and immediately had him installing the new stuff. Less than twelve hours after finishing he was on another plane back here.

619 Typo, meant 8.1 for the version of the upcoming Windows revision. Formerly known as Blue, now known to call itself Windows 8.1.  combines some new features and changes with all of the accumulated patches, updated drivers, etc.

They intend to get an update like this out annually and a major new version every three years. So there should be an 8.2 before Windows 9 starts being talked about.

Whether they charge existing Windows 8 user for this remains to be seen. It seems likely they'll release it as a freebie to rehabilitate the public image of Windows 8. Those expecting a return of the Windows 7 desktop should give up on that fantasy now. They'll compromise a bit but not that far. Much of the new stuff in Blue is really for making the touch side more functional, such as providing a more complete set of control panels using the Modern UI. Users of the Surface tablets have to use the desktop control panels for a lot of stuff and it can be a pain if you don't have suitable input devices connected.

But there is a Start button on the desktop. It takes you to the start screen, though, it doesn't pop up the old start menu.

You do realize there is absolutely zero relation between DOS on the Atari 8-bit systems and DOS on the PC? (Though there was a CP/M clone command line from OSS that a lot of people used.)

Also, Atari DOS was at 2.0 long before any of the XL models. There wasn't much reason to ever use the buggy 1.0 by that point. For myself, I rarely used the straight Atari DOS. I almost always used the modified versions like LJ Silver, that had a bunch of additional menu items that were handy.

Posted by: epobirs at April 29, 2013 02:09 AM (kcfmt)

627 Actually epobirs, I didn't know the lack of relation, more so just showing the variety of systems I used.  A couple of my uncles worked for Burroughs back in the 70s and 80s, and my older cousins relate how they used to warm up the tape deck for 20 minutes before loading programs.  Never was a CS guy myself and would not claim to fully understand a system beyond DOS 6, though I know enough about what I don't know about Win9X and above to NOT do real damage.

638 XP Mode properly refers to a free item for Windows 7 Pro/Business/Enterprise (essentially any version that can join a domain) that uses the Virtual PC software that Microsoft acquired when they bought Connectix (some of the tech used to run original Xbox games on the Xbox 360 was also created by the Connectix guys, who were best know for a long running emulator for running PC stuff on the Mac before they used Intel chips).

It was primarily aimed at small businesses who had badly written old software that wouldn't behaved correctly under the security requirements that were enacted with Vista. A lot of stuff developers used to do was greatly frowned upon by Microsoft but they had a policy on non-interference with outside developers. But as most computers became connected tot he outside world it just wasn't acceptable any more, so a lot of recommendations became enforced laws under the newer OS releases.

A lot of businesses couldn't adopt Vista because they had evil old software. XP Mode created a virtual machine running XP within Windows 7. Once you installed an app on the virtual XP machine and had an icon on the Windows 7 desktop, you could fire up the app and it would appear to be running on Windows 7.

It was pretty slick. You could fire up the XP virtual machine and just work in XP but that was mainly for getting stuff installed or making needed adjustments. Another nice feature of XP Mode is that it could get a lot of hardware the didn't have Windows 7 support working. I have an old Canon Lide 30 scanner that the company stopped supporting after XP. By the time Win7 shipped they were about five generation on with the scanner hardware. I eventually got one of the newer models but found I could still use the old 30 under XP mode. I was impressed because a lot of virtual machine stuff then still didn't offer very support for hardware connected to the real machine.

http://tinyurl.com/nwo6s5

Microsoft doesn't support XP Mode for Windows 8, as most of the problem software has long since been updated or replaced. But there are ways to get it working on Win8 if you have the need.

With regards to hand guns....

Someone once said that "A Wheelgun is like a fork," "You pick it up and it works."

Revolvers are often over-looked because they don't have the "Sexy" like semi-autos.

Look into a small or "J" frame type if your looking for a pocket carry.....you might be surprised and some of the offerings pack a MAJOR punch as with the .357 or .38+P loads. Given that most defensive shootings occur at under the standard "Combat Range" of 7 yards, if you need more than 5 rounds to take out a threat....you did not practice enough.....now taking down other types of threats, read...(   )...Black Rifle and a 30 round mag + 4 mags in the coat pockets......minimum....such is the times we live in.

My mother worked at the Burroughs factory in Westlake Village, CA for many years. I worked there about a month before deciding I was not well suited for the job. The feeling was mutual and I jumped barely ahead of being pushed. Which is kind of funny considering how much I enjoy building PCs today.

Back in the day, DOS was a catch-all term for OS extensions that enable disk operations or a separate version of the OS entirely to support disks. So there were hundreds of completely distinct products that called themselves <something>-DOS. Usually the something was a brand name or a product line name if the company had multiple incompatible lines.

Add on top of the the zillions of DOS variant that were sort of related. Before IBM PC clones became the rule, there were a ton of machines sold, like the Burroughs B25, that ran MS-DOS but weren't compatible with stuff written for the IBM PC. Back then, Microsoft's core business was porting its languages to various machines, with producing variants of MS-DOS a close second.

Making a program written for the IBM work on your system was usually pretty easy but it also meant ignoring any of the nicer features of your machine. A lot of those MS-DOS machines were big improvements on the IBM, especially in graphics. (Some, like the Mindset, were comparable to the Amiga and had a common heritage of engineers who'd worked at Atari when the 800 chip set was designed.) But none of them ever caught on in a big way, though a few had dedicated followings. Once Compaq showed how to make a fully IBM compatible machine free of legal issues, it was all downhill for machines that ran MS-DOS but weren't IBM PC compatible.

Only for people incapable of learning new things or those who allow popular opinion to take the place of finding out for themselves.

I've been using Win8 almost daily for over a year. It took about 15 minutes to learn the new stuff and from there it was just a matter of practice to take advantage of the new stuff.

Are there things that could be improved? Of course. And they're working on it, which is why the point revision is in the works.

A lot of the complaints could have been blunted if not for the personal philosophy of Sinofsky, who resigned shortly before the launch. He thought it better to make a clean break in the software design than to invest a lot of time and cost into transition mitigation. Popular opinion went against him, as was already obvious before the launch. Sinofsky's ego won but Sinofsky ultimately lost. Rather than being in line to run the whole company someday, he is out of the company entirely.

The gun-and-ammo-buying frenzy might create a discrepancy between what you want to buy and what's available. And if you find the pistol you want, will you find enough ammo with which to practice?

My hot summer pocket carry is a venerable Beretta 950. If you also purchase one of those pocket holsters, which keep your pistol clean and safe, yet allow a safe draw, you will not have to worry too much about pocket lint and such. Still clean your pistol regularly. As far as ammo goes, your pocket pistol will be a close-in protection weapon, and you will not shoot just one shot. Shot placement, not caliber,  rules.

Whatever you buy, practice, practice, practice. And, before you go out, be sure that you have practiced your draw and presentation from that pair of pants, both standing and sitting.

CCW guns....take a Charter Arms .44 Bulldog, take off the target grips, put on a set of stock Undercover sliver grips, add a bobbed hammer, trim the barrel down even with the ejector rod, stuff it full of WW Silvertips, add a pocket holster, and buy a bag of ice and some Tylenol. Fire 24 round of the WW and apply ice to you hand, take two Tylenol and call me in the morning.  The last time I fired it at an indoor range, the rangemaster called a cease fire, and scolded me for firing a non allowed 454 Casull in the lane. Showed him the fired cases.  He just muttered something about "morons", and walked away.

Another favorite trick with this is to load up some black powder loads for it. Just don't get the indoor and the outdoor ammo mixed up. Sigh...banned from ANOTHER range.....

657 Maybe late to the carry discussion but I have to chime in. Because guns. Honestly, go with what fits your hand, what fits in your pocket and what you can shoot accurately at 25 feet. That means a lot of range time with rental guns (which is fun). My 'summer' gun is a Kel Tec PF-9. My wife's is a XDS. The Glock 19 is surprisingly concealable but maybe not quite pocket sized. I also have a Bersa Thunder in .380 that may get into the rotation if I can get a FTF issue ironed out. Also take a look at the Kahr P9 or PM9. People either love them or hate them (due to the tirgger mostly) but the K9 and P9 are shockingly accurate as are my XDs.
