We're In the Very Best of Hands: Currently-Serving Democratic Congresswoman Does Not Seem to Understand What, or Where, Benghazi Is
— Ace

Wow.

Mark Steyn is aghast.

First, she has no idea what “Benghazi” is.

Then, pleading in mitigation that sheÂ’s there to talk about the Middle East, she reveals that she has no idea where Benghazi is.

Finally, when her constituents helpfully point out that Benghazi is in Libya, she turns to the side and gives that pitiful look that is the single thing I most loathe about American politics – the look a floundering empty suit gives to her minder when she needs him to come and rescue her. Which the minder immediately does.

This isnÂ’t an especially partisan point, but IÂ’m so weary of post-modern ventriloquistÂ’s dummies who canÂ’t be allowed near their constituents without the protection of a phalanx of aides. In this video, the voters are well-informed, but they have a low-information Congresswoman.

Wonk Gap, yo.

Literally nobody in the media has mentioned Benghazi at all. I'll bet she considered it as if it were the location of the stoplight in East Podunk. (2) Congresspeople are really expected to be knowledgeable about everything. There's a mind-boggling amount of information they're supposed to sound informed about. At a certain point, all the Left will have is DC and the Presidency, and that only because that's where the money gets printed and the 'free shit' handed out, along with a smattering of blue state governors. I don't think these idiots realize it, but they are driving us toward a sovereign debt/currency crisis and that's when all hell breaks loose. Given the fact that almost their entire voting base is living in major metropolitan areas, once that happens, they will be sitting ducks. I think that if they think they've got a plan to handle that contingency, they are mistaken. Way too many variables to handle, including foreign intervention from our debt-holders on the side of responsible fiscal governance. Time will tell.

I have no idea what 'interesting' might mean in this context.

Rush made the point that no US President would have attended this gathering of tyrants, thieves, murders and thugs before. They would have sent a State Department nobody or  no official representation.

The newly transformed United States is well represented by Barack Obama. He is us and we (half of us at least) are him.  The other half of us have little or no representation in our government.

202 179 my friend and her boyfriend went last summer....their eyes were opened.....they thought it was going to be wonderful....because they were staying in a "luxury" hotel....there is really no such thing in cuba.....

I stayed in an expensive hotel in East Berlin, not long after the wall fell. I had to stay there, because West Berlin was completely full of Germans who wanted to see this historical happening.

The hotel was expensive, but it was not luxury. It had "Palace" (Palast) in its name, but looked like an office building from the outside. The slippers provided in the bathroom looked and felt as though they were made from recycled heavy truck tires. I am not exaggerating -- they were actively hostile to the human foot. The room itself would have been shamed by any Holiday Inn room in the Midwest.

The most notable design feature of the hotel was that there was no way to exit it without being closely observed from many angles.

I asked a local friend if he had any tips for staying in the East. His number-one tip? "Don't eat the pizza."

Corn, at least, is true.  I saw a full-color menu from a Japanese pizza place when I was taking a class on the language, and corn was clearly visible on some of the pizzas.  No clue on the octopus, though.

Our instructor was a young woman from Japan who indicated that she was acculturated enough to prefer the American version of pizza by that point.

South Zimbabwe. It depends a lot on the tribe/clan situation in SA. Clan affiliation runs very very deep. Even Mandela's nickname is derived from his tribe name. The whites and Indians could serve as a bulwark against tribal clashes, at least for a while, being neutral in the tribal disputes. Eventually, though, one tribe will get powerful, probably through a charismatic leader and it'll just be Zimbabwe.

This is something I predicted, actually. When the Stimulus came along, I said "I'll bet this guy will use this as the new spending baseline, and start wasting the country's substance to send money to his friends, based on this new high bar." I was right, damnit.

So the answer to your question is, I am almost positive, is "it's going to favored Democratic constituencies." I don't know how it's getting there, but I'd bet anything that it IS getting there.

291 Actually, it seems that Ryan got was (a) some small pension reform, (b) no extension of UE benefits and (c) no discussion of a shutdown. He gave up the sequester and any hope of real spending cuts. But I can't get worked up about it. As long as we have an irresponsible-spending party and a media who will try to eviscerate any Republican who tries to reign it in, we won't get anywhere. It's not like we'll make substantial cuts anyway. The cuts will be symbolic. The deficit is now larger than all but 2 budget items: Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid. It is larger than the totality of Defense spending. Little sequester cuts don't mean a damned thing.

300 I hope, although I doubt, that this congresswoman and her staff are uncomfortable with how this video makes her look.

When someone asks a question about "House Resolution 36," and you are a member of the House of Representatives, answering that it's a Senate matter and you don't think the House has anything about that is not a good answer. Especially when the questioner correctly identified the resolution by number and description -- House Resolution 36 is indeed to appoint a select committee to investigate Benghazi.

Even if the congresswoman had no idea who or what or where Benghazi is, she could have said, "I will carefully consider that resolution but I haven't taken a position on it yet. I will get back to you later after I've had time to consider it."

That would have been unhelpful, too, but at least it would demonstrate that her brain was functioning.

I kind of agree with your view, hopefully this pension reform is real and it will stick. Also extension of unemployment, it's a toss up. The economist side of me says, yep let it end. Yea, well no Top Men are calling me either. But this wasn't to hard to see coming. Republicans got porked over the last shutdown. Doesn't matter whether we agree or not, it happened. And you know it would have happened again. In truth, even if the Republicans had gotten the end of Social Security in this negotiation Obama would have ignored it and in this climate he probably would have gotten away with it. Any spending reforms would have suffered the same fate. Personally, I do not want to give the left or the media anything to talk about for the next year but Obamacare. DOOM is coming sooner than we think, and it will happen more suddenly than anyone imagines. When the holders of US Government Debt have sell triggers because they don't want to be the last guy holding the paper, there will be an international rout. It probably happens in 2015, but I wouldn't rule out 2014.

The answer is going to be threefold: (1) asset sales, (2) means-testing Medicare (even more than it already is), and (3) devolution to the states of many of the programs they are currently already administering, like Medicaid, Section 8, SCHIP, school breakfasts and lunches, EBT cards, etc., probably with block grants that are smaller than the sum of those programs now. Some states will try to maintain benefit levels, and some states will cut them to match the new reality. There will be resorting of the makers and the takers. In the urban areas, as you mention, it will get ugly. Prepare for refugees, if you live in a place where we have food and energy. Your family members in blue states are coming to live with you sometime in the next decade.
