When a narrative implodes in the park, does it make a sound?
— Purple Avenger

I'm stealth underposting this due to timeliness of the information.
Bottom line: Obama blinked and wants to talk now.

The "optics" of Obama's petulant gambit at the WWII monument were changing faster than the shape of a Hatteras sand bar in a hurricane.

This is what happens when you're tone deaf and living in bubble world.

"It is dangerous to play politics with the Budget." -- Clement Attlee (post war Brit labor party PM)

Sage wisdom there coming from a leftist. But Obama is not a leftist in the traditional sense of an Attlee.

How far off track has Obama's scheming gone?
NOW, suddenly, after his plans went all pear shaped and the optics at the WWII monument started breaking ugly, Obama wants to talk, and right now damnit!

President Barack Obama summoned leaders in Congress from both parties to the White House on Wednesday as the federal government shutdown entered its second day with no immediate resolution in sight.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., were set to huddle with the president at 5:30 p.m...

Petulance has turned to panic.

Its said no plan survives intact upon contact with the enemy. Obama and Reid's collapsed on contact with a few old guys who wouldn't be cowed.

Bonus hilarity from the Searchlight Strangler in that NBC piece -- Harry Reid says: "I'm not a criminal. I'm not a scoundrel,".

10 This is why I have been so skeptical of Gabe's doomsday predictions.  Obama has shown he will fold like a cheap suit the moment the optics look bad for anything.  He has no core principles, so why would he continue to stonewall for 5 seconds past the moment that he personally starts to look bad?

As long at the GOP could find the backbone to stand up to leadership and pull the trigger on a shutdown, then Obama would fold and go to the negotiating table.

Honestly, I don't understand why he wouldn't grab the lifeline for delaying the exchanges with both hands right now, given how bad the roll out is.

20 I might have a bit of respect for old Hairy Reed if he was only a criminal and a scoundrel. But he is a fucking traitor and communist liar and well below a mere criminal and scoundrel in status. He should be tried and convicted of treason and imprisoned in the Colorado supermax in strict solitary confinement until he's buzzard shit.

He did pivot to domestic policy after Putin schooled him, and now that this has blown up, I expect him to run away again.

25 Standard Obama theater; blame everyone else while making it look like you did something.

He's simply trying to project himself as a reasonable person. But that's not a believable role for him to play.

If Boehner was smart, he would receive assurances before going to the meeting, in writing, that actual negotiations will ensue. Otherwise he will simply end up being an ass puppet in this performance.

But if he does show up, there should be a press conference afterwards where he states "I came to negotiate, but the king would have no part of it".

26 Dispatches From The Front

2 Oct 2013

Washington, D.C.

The Battle of the Memorial continues into its second day.  Veteran Americans again stormed the ill-defended barricades erected by hostile forces and took possession of the high ground.

The opponent forces, previously adamant on total victory at all costs, are beginning to show the first signs of weakening resolve.

"They're demoralized as hell, boys, let's ride right through them!"

(A compromise, where ALL of Obamacare is implemented--i.e. removing any and all discretionary authority from the Executive Branch regarding implementation timelines and details--is I think the best-case scenario for a short-term 'exit strategy' for the liberty coalition.

This is a variation of the "Let It Burn" strategy:  "Let It Fail."

Unfortunately, it will hurt.  A lot.  But as Gandalf said:  "the burnt hand teaches best.")

Posted by: filbert at October 02, 2013 08:47 AM (FUbuZ)

27 HHS is also probably telling him the ObammyCare rollout is an epic fail and that the need some headspace for a relaunch. The healthcare.gov web site is pathetic. I tried to enroll and got this: "We have a lot of visitors on the site right now. Please stay on this page. We're working to make the experience better, and we donÂ’t want you to lose your place in line. WeÂ’ll send you to the login page as soon as we can. Thanks for your patience!" Why am I not shocked that President Incompetent has me STANDING IN LINE for a FRIGGING TRANSACTIONAL WEB PAGE! (Or as healthcare.gov describes it, an "experience." Unbelievable. Actually, since this is the Evil Spawn of Obama and Nancy Pelosi, it is totally believable. Welcome to Obama's Amerika, where they are "working to make the experience better." Stay turgid, morons.

I don't know if Obama is blinking on this.

Just for the optics, he needed to call everyone in for a meeting.  As long as he believes he'll continue to get good press and that the republicans and especially the Tea Party get the blame, he won't make any deal.

Posted by: jwest at October 02, 2013 08:51 AM (u2a4R)

30 Conservatives that I listen to on here, the intertubes, and *gasp* real life, who are/were resistant to taking a stand and pushing the House not to give in to a "clean" CR just have not grasped the significance of the optics to draw in those that otherwise pay no attention.  The Dems know this tactic all too well.  This opportunity has been our best shot in years with a hated law and a built-in compromise of an otherwise fully funded CR.  We are in the right, and more importantly, we hold the same position that the majority of Americans have internalized.

Posted by: dogfish at October 02, 2013 08:52 AM (nsOJa)

31

If only we had some smart people in the party, we could be putting out story after story of ridiculously wasteful spending and government employees making big money while not working at all.

This would offset the media's attempt to demonize the right with stories of doe-eyed kids who won't be getting their cancer cured with new miracle drugs from the CDC.

It's hard being part of the stupid party.

36 Obama blinked and wants to talk now. He did? In the article, I saw this: At the meeting, Obama "will urge the House to pass the clean CR to reopen the government, and call on Congress to act to raise the debt ceiling to pay the bills we have already incurred and avoid devastating consequences on our economy," a White House official said. A spokesman for Boehner said: “We’re pleased the president finally recognizes that his refusal to negotiate is indefensible. It’s unclear why we’d be having this meeting if it’s not meant to be a start to serious talks between the two parties.” Seems his demands are the same as before - a "clean CR" and raising the credit limit. Doesn't seem like he's actually blinked just yet. I'd say that if anything, it's more like a very small drop of sweat at his hairline.

38 Lose - lose situation for Obama.

Cave, and he looks like he did with Syria. Democrats don't mind so much if he is soft on scum like Putin and Assad, but to give in to the hated conservatives? Unacceptable!

Stand firm, and conservatives will be introduced to the joys of civil disobedience. A lot of of Obama/Reid/Pelosi's leverage and control depends on conservatives acting like nice little, law-abiding, well, conservatives, susceptible to public shaming (raaaacists!) and adherent to of even BS laws, regulations, and procedures. A little whiff of anarchy can severely reduce that leverage.

41 But if he does show up, there should be a press conference afterwards where he states "I came to negotiate, but the king would have no part of it". Boehner has no nads. As for smarts, that could conceivably be in dispute as well.

Posted by: Blacque Jacques Shellacque at October 02, 2013 10:31 AM (vd7A8)

42 Fuck him. After the shit he's pulled on these WWII veterans, he can go to hell.  As others have stated, these heroes had to fight through barricades and barbed wire on the beach of France and the Pacific. They shouldn't face barricades put up by their own government by an asshole "Commander in Chief" with a chip on his shoulder.

This man truly hates Americans more than America's self-sworn enemies. He's not looking out for anyone's best interest - except those who are willing to kiss his ass. The GOP shouldn't be looking after his.

By the way, I'm of the belief that we can do without much of those non-essential services.

Sorry if I've offended anyone.
