When Your Computer Gives You the "Working" Busy Signal...
— Ace

... do you guys go back and re-hit the button, but this time, adding a little bit of Authority in your button-push? With a bit of a Jaunty Nobleman's Flourish as you smartly bounce your finger away from the button?

Or is that just me?

Meanwhile, I think this is funny.

19 No I don't push the buttons any differently on a computer, but when a feed flow controller malfunctions due to a transmitter failure I have been known to push a button so hard it almost jammed through the control board trying to get the valve back open again.

After all, everyone knows if you push the buttons for manual control harder valves WILL respond faster.

I do the same thing, Ace.  I know we're supposed to be grateful they keep upgrading our tech, but I've had PCs since the early 90s.  Each new MS operating system gets more complex, requiring more memory and CPU, and the further we get away from it the more convinced I am that W2K was their best OS, and everything since then  is worse.

92 Mostly I curse the dimwit programmers who violate the 1/10th of a second rule for UI thread responsiveness.

It gets even worse with multi-threaded apps that allow setting of thread priority to idle-time priority.  Then the fucking idiots put UI interaction code on those idle time threads which can make the whole system seem unresponsive for minutes at time.

Threads in MS systems have been around since OS/2 1.0 back in 1987 -- you'd kinda think they'd have learned how this shit works by now.

500 years from now, historians will be looking back on this moment as the turning point - the beginning of the movement that returned the country back into the hands of the people.

The cashier is some snowboarder bum with a tongue stud. Tip jar. Seems as if any of these cashier jobs hipster douchebags gravitate to, there's the tip jar. Six pack at the 7-11? 251 I'll look. Is it for a Pentium Pro board?

Yep, IBM Server 315.  I got the PII Overdrive in it (basically a 333mhz Xeon w/512k L2).

Freaking fussy machine though, I'm not gonna put much more effort into it.  The only disk adapter it seems inclined to accept is an Adaptec 2940UW.  All the Ultra 100 IDE cards I got gag it, as does a CMD SCSI controller.  It likes the Matrox Millenium II though, which is good.  They were a bitching video card back in the day.

269 Got plenty of SCSI drives.

I bought a slew of 9G ST410800's a while ago super super cheap.  I love those.  Small by modern standards, but they're built like tanks and last forever.  If I got something critical I want to keep, I dump it on one of those and put it on the shelf with a CD-R as secondary backup.  The only goink about that Seagate is they didn't conformal coat the controller board and dust will zonk them every year or two in an unclean environment.  Just blow the dust off and they start running again.

Posted by: @PurpAv at March 06, 2013 12:19 PM (/gHaE)

270 I buy an SSD drive.

Dug out a spare SATA port, plugged this bad boy in, ridiculously slow 2010 comp (Intel RAID5 fails) has suddenly become zero-wait-for-anything comp. Windows actually loads faster than BIOS. This should save my comp for 2-5 years since I don't really PC game anymore.

Windoze seems to eat up whatever memory you have,

It's helping you over the fence.  It will use every bit in the box.

So MOAR ram, get an SSD (you'll hate going without once you've switched).  If your surfing the crap out of it use Memory Restart for FF.
