I Got Nothin' Overnight Open Thread
— Ace

I got nothin'. Well I usually got nothin'. Today I also got nothin' to write.

The Wall Street Journal, however, is just now reporting that the NSA's capabilities are far greater than has been claimed since the beginning of the Snowden Imbroglio and now admits it has the "capability" to monitor 75% of all internet traffic at any time.

Okay that's not funny but this is. Remember David Paterson, the half-blind accidental governor of NY who turned out to be kneedeep in affairs?

He's still got the silver tongue.

David A. Paterson was, abnormally, at a loss for words.

The question was why voters should choose Scott M. Stringer, whom Mr. Paterson has endorsed in the Democratic primary for city comptroller and with whom he was campaigning on Monday morning in Harlem, over Eliot Spitzer, under whom Mr. Paterson served as lieutenant governor.

After a pause, Mr. Paterson replied, “Because I endorsed him.”

Asked again a minute later, he did not do any better.

“I’m not going to answer the question of why they should choose Scott over Eliot,” he said. “That’s your question. I didn’t ask that question, and I’m not answering it.”

This is not at all funny: The judge seems to have ignored the clear meaning of the law in order to rule in favor of Michael Mann in his sham defamation suit against Mark Steyn, NRO, and CEI, at least as regards the defendants' motion to dismiss the suit on grounds it's a SLAPP suit intended to squelch vital criticism.

And so for something funny, here's Baby Monkey Feeding Time.

Queen's swan found dead and barbecued at Windsor Castle on riverbank

UK Mirror:  http://tinyurl.com/lbl9jvo

One of the Queen's swans has been found killed and barbecued on the riverbank near to Windsor Castle.

The cooked swan's carcass was dumped near Baths Water, and was discovered by Wendy Hermon, 46, a volunteer for charity Swan Life, which cares for sick and injured birds.

She described the scene as 'sickening', and admitted she would have been distraught if her young son was with her when she made the grisly discovery after being called out by a council warden last Sunday.

...

"We could see that whoever did this had taken the breast out.

"It was done neatly, presumably to get at the meat. We have no idea how it was killed, it could have been shot or beaten."..

They have a picture of the poor thing's burnt up carcass at the story.

NSA thing.
“The National Security Agency (NSA) doesn’t know how much information leaker Edward Snowden was able to obtain because of an underdeveloped capacity to audit its own data, according to a NBC News report released late Tuesday.”

This is criminal. Every single thing he did should have left an audit trail, both as a guard against misuse, and for damage assessment in a case just like this.

I didn’t say “criminal incompetence,” because if the need for an audit trail is obvious to such as me, it surely must have been obvious to higher-ups at NSA. If the systems lack the capacity for this, it’s because somebody doesn’t want the records kept. That suggests abuse at a systemic level. (It also undercuts claims of extensive auditing)

anyway ,I thought it was interesting.

My BIL lives near a canal and told me that the cute ducks that swim
there have been disappearing at a rate of knots and it's the immigrants
who find them tasty.

I mean, I get it.  I do.    If you come from a third world shit hole where anything floating around on the water, paddling its feet and searching for bugs and fish, is     up for grabs as that night's dinner, I get it.   But there tend to be things like RULES and hunting licenses and crap like that, especially in cities,   and especially in places where    hunting for    game and fowl    is   popular.   Britain's got dumbass gun laws, but they still like their hunting.   You can't just move to England, say, "Look, is duck!  Duck good in stew," and take it back to the dinner table.

Besides. Can you imagine what ducks and geese and swans in London and the surrounding environs must eat on a daily basis?  *shudder*

It just pisses me off!   And not just because I'm a bird lover (though yeah, i totally am).

101 The media are, in fact, obsessed with whether Hillary Clinton will become the first female president. Her every move is analyzed and interpreted, like tea leaves from which we might deduce her 2016 intentions. But in their heavy breathing over Clinton, many in the media seem to be ignoring an equally important story about women and politics. Put another way, instead of setting up a beat dedicated to covering Clinton, perhaps the Times could better serve the public by using those resources to cover women and politics more broadly. Will shattering the Oval Office’s glass ceiling and electing a madam president be an inspiring achievement for this country? Of course. Do we also need madam mayors, madam senators, madam councilwomen, madam sheriffs, madam governors and madam congresswomen all across the nation? You betcha. In fact, this has never been more urgent because women across the country are in the fight of their lives. Anti-woman legislation — slashing funding for education, health and nutrition services to low-income women and their families — is everywhere, especially in the states. In Texas last month, Gov. Rick Perry (R) signed a bill that will likely shut down 90 percent of the state’s abortion clinics and force low-income Texans to drive hundreds of miles to the closest clinic. ************ Katrina Vanden Heuvel demanding more free commercial endorsements for Liberal women from the NYT--she is writing at WaPo of course.

Local radio idiot was interviewing Michael Mann the other day.  I didn't even know it was Mann, but about 3.8 seconds after I tuned in I knew I was listening to a lying sonofabitch.

He says the problem with the emails was someone used the word "trick," and the mean old right wing media misconstrued that to mean someone was actually, you know, using tricks to arrive at their data.

No, according to Mann, the word "trick" is like a shortcut, like a mathematical formula, rather than doing all the math by longhand.

The radio idiot just let Mann talk and talk and talk, spewing one lie after another.  Mann is apparently promoting his book, which has the phrase "hockey stick" in the title.

169 Banana Rats used to be a big problem at the Navy Base in Cuba, but were virtually wiped out in a short few months when Castro opened the prisons in 94 and the boat people swarmed to try and get to Florida.  The Navy and Coast Guard caught most of them and brought them to the Navy base at GITMO.  Put up about 30,000 of them in temporary camps all over the place and within a few months you didn't see a Banana Rat anywhere because they ate them all.

I expect to be reading stories of "immigrants" getting their asses tossed in jail.

172 Hooray for baby monkey!  Man, I wish I had a baby monkey -- I'd dress him in miniature versions of all my outfits and ... what?  It's not like anything could go wrong ... unless the baby monkey grew up and started hurting people ... which he almost certainly would

I STILL want a baby monkey!  *pitches puggie fit*

I wanna monkey!

I wanna monkey!

*holds breath, turns blue, promptly passes out*

wanna .... mon ... key ...

173 Yeah, Barry Hussein barely knows his half-brother Malik (whom Egyptian officials are claiming is raising money for the MB in Egypt, and is the reason Obama is supporting the MB there, despite all their crimes against the Egyptian people, such as burning churches). Malik Obama was just the guy Barry Hussein asked to be his best man at his wedding to Michelle. He barely even knows the dude! Remember the part in Barry's (Billy Ayers') book where he says he'll "side with the Muslims." Maybe Barry actually meant he'll "side with the Muslim Brotherhood" and Billy Ayers just misread Barry's notes. 174 RE: gardening foibles

Outsourced gardening is like outsourced software and support. It's good when it's not common because really determined people are trying to move up in the world by doing work for foreigners. Later, it turns out to only look good on paper. The later folks don't have a dang clue what they are doing and don't care.

176 #172  You are correct.  I believe they are all considered property of the crown and are to be left alone.  There is an annual count done,  too.

8 minutes of feeding a monkey. Waste of time.
8 minutes of spanking a monkey. Time well spent.

179 #179  Call an arborist who is certified.  Get them out there to take a look and see if they have any advice.

And get a written statement if it IS ruined,  so you can get a free replacement from the tree whackers.

181 He's like an alternate side Peter (the apostle). Posted by: baldilocks at August 21, 2013 03:22 PM (Tnlh/) *************** Yes, instead of denying Christ three times, Barry Hussein denied (1) his mentor/father figure Jeremiah Wright; (2) his close friend and ghostwriter Billy Ayers (Barry's political career in Chicago started in Ayers' living room); and (3) his half-brother and the best man at his wedding, Malik Obama.

184 I think Volokh got it wrong on this one. I don't think you can destroy a libel suit as anti-SLAPP litigation, by arguing your serious public policy advocacy is done through hyperbolic opinion not to be taken seriously as fact. Nor does it really help to say its as silly and innocent as saying "George Zimmerman is a murderer" because that acquittal can't stop the jabber. Or something. (Yes, that was Volokh's example). Maybe trial on the facts is costly and laborious, but surely that's better than "winning" on the basis that you're a silly ass nobody really listens to. Speaking as somebody who took Steyn seriously, that is.
