White House: Make These "Cuts" Hurt, Dammit!
— andy

This demonization and fear-mongering crap is really getting old. But, hey, it's the Chicago Way™.

Today's designated villain is, apparently, anyone who thinks the federal government should be able to competently manage a small cut to the rate of increase in spending.

The Obama administration denied an appeal for flexibility in lessening the sequesterÂ’s effects, with an email this week appearing to show officials in Washington that because they already had promised the cuts would be devastating, they now have to follow through on that.

In the email sent Monday by Charles Brown, an official with the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service office in Raleigh, N.C., Mr. Brown asked “if there was any latitude” in how to spread the sequester cuts across the region to lessen the impacts on fish inspections.

He said he was discouraged by officials in Washington, who gave him this reply: “We have gone on record with a notification to Congress and whoever else that ‘APHIS would eliminate assistance to producers in 24 states in managing wildlife damage to the aquaculture industry, unless they provide funding to cover the costs.’ So it is our opinion that however you manage that reduction, you need to make sure you are not contradicting what we said the impact would be.” (emphasis added)

Got that?

King Barack I proclaimed that the world would end on March 1, and by God you'd better do your part, Federal Bureaucrat No. 73842135/J.

The King has also decreed that his subjects will no longer be able to visit the Royal Palace due to "staffing reductions". Here's a list of all the employees who were let go:

On a related note, His Majesty feels awfully set upon by those dastardly Republicans who hate him more than they love their country. Or something.

So deeply ingrained is the animus aimed at Barack Obama that conservative lawmakers would rather put Americans out of work, sabotage valuable contracts for small businesses, and eject preschoolers from Head Start classrooms rather than give the president a legislative “win.”

The president himself made that argument Friday while explaining why across-the-board spending cuts could not be averted by March 1, and why he would now spend weeks or months, if necessary, working to get Congress to reverse what he called “dumb” budget policy.

***

Here's my pessimistic outlook:  The problem is not that opposition to 'Bammy is personal.  The problem is that everybody, yes even Chris Matthews, knows that 'Bammy is a bald faced liar therefore no solution or compromise is possible because any such deal would have to involve a certain level of trust and they know they cannot trust Obama.  Therefore, this will be a deathmatch.  'Bammy will have the low information voter/free shit army and the media on his side.   The opposition will consist of everybody without their head up their ass.  Neither side will blink as long as there is a hope of destroying the other side.

Posted by: WalrusRex at March 05, 2013 11:32 AM (Hx5uv)

President Obama and his people are furious because the Horrors Of Sequester were supposed to be the means by which the House would be flipped back to Democratic control in the midterms. That's one of the reasons why the reaction against Woodward by the Left was so vociferous. Woodward broke ranks. Worse, he pointed out what anyone with access to news from a year ago could know: Obama originated the sequester.

I consider myself a history buff and I simply can't recall reading about a president deliberately setting out to make a bad situation worse for the country in order to score points against the opposition party. Buchanan might qualify, given his borderline traitorous secesssionist sympathies, but at least one could say he didn't do what he did out of spite and petty narcissism.

I thought that as well, but I'm not so sure. If you look at the budget as a whole, that's correct.  But if you look department by department, I don't think so.

My understanding is that none of the "cuts" apply to non-discretionary spending.  So, no cuts or even a reduction in increase for Medicare/Medicaid/Social Security.  These programs continue to increase in a big way.

Discretionary spending (defense, etc.) is actually being cut.  However, when you take into account how much more is being spent per year on non-discretionary items, you end up spending more each year.  In other words, the amount of increased spending in non-discretionary spending is slightly more than the amount of cuts in discretionary spending.

Tom Coburn, R-Okla., posed that question this week to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, noting that two USDA-sponsored conferences are coming up despite the budget anxiety in Washington over the sequester. One in California includes a "tasting reception;" another in Oregon includes a "wine tasting" element, according to Coburn. "While these conferences may be fun, interesting and even educational getaways for department employees, food inspecting rather than food tasting should be USDA's priority at this time," Coburn said in the letter. And while your at it furlough the entire EPA and a half dozen other departments

You forgot that when Obammy thought this up, it was, by design, supposed to be so horrific that Republicans would cave and tremble in fear until they had granted every lib request for increased spending.  Of course, the brave Republicans led by Orange Boner may still find a way to cave and give in to the forces of Obama the magnificent!

Ynet learned Monday that the ultra-Orthodox United Torah Judaism Party presented the House with the bill, demanding general election be held within 90 days. Now this probably will not pass but it does present Netenyahu with difficulties in forming a New Gov and the fearless leader obama said he will NOT visit Israel if they have not formed a new Government, which might mean it has an excuse to skip Israel again just like Kerry is this time.

Oh, not really.

But there are a lot of people who went to work for the government because they thought it would be 'job security'...or 'recession proof'.

When things deteriorate to the point that the government is killing the jobs that fund the government jobs...then it is hard not to resent them, though.

An employer in the Private Sector cannot borrow money...and charge it to other people's children.

This is another thing that fosters resentment.

Government work is still called..."Government Service".

We have to remind them that they work for us.

And I'm one of those people who always opt out of going through the naked scanner machines. You'd think if they'd fuck with someone, it would be me. Never happens. They give me the pat-down, I say please and thank you, they say the same, I'm on my way without incident.

He said Tehran has a history of denial and deceit and is enriching uranium beyond any plausible peaceful purpose. Mr. Moo-moo,

I have no reason to doubt the veracity of your experiences.  All I can say is that you should consider yourself fortunate.

As to your other point, I'm afraid it is a bit offensive, although I detect you meant no offense.  I don't think people have been "taught," or conditioned to hate the TSA, at least in the sense that you imply.  Any hate, I'd argue, is learned by actual experience, not peer-pressure.

I travel frequently, and my distaste for the TSA has occasionally caused my to rent a car and take a long drive rather than fly.  I do that not because I think it's cool to hate the TSA, but because the TSA sucks.

191 Take the slightest annoyance and people elevate it to a "holy shit, these people are the worst humans in the world".

Coming back from my first trip to Germany, I watched a morbidly-obese 95%-chance-of-voting-for-SCOAMF TSA agent in Philadelphia scream at an elderly European woman with limited English (and surely no experience with the particular dialect the screaming was being conducted in) until she cried (her husband got shunted to another line and he had the passports).

Maybe you just get lucky, but when I go through the lines in the airports in our finer urban Democrat-strongholds, most of them seem to be taking the Obama "punish our enemies" directive to heart.  With glee.

I try to remember that most people in line are stupid and/or jerks. But that's not an excuse.

Nope, they are not rare.  I have a relative who is a white haired blue-eyed lady retired university librarian in her 70s who is always searched.  She laughs it off by saying, "I am their GIMMEE, they search me, then the folks who should be searched can't say they were profiled."  I used to travel for my job and flew every week.  For two years, I flew out of Hartsfield in Atlanta and it was pre 9/11 and security was a nighmare then.  The few times I have flown lately for personal business have convinced me that I could not stand to put up with the TSA.

I'll give you an example of what I mean. My in-laws fly maybe once every 2 years. Last summer they went to Hawaii. All excited, pumped for the big trip. It was cheaper for them to fly out of where we live than their local airport. So they came over and spent the night then I drove them to the airport. On the way there, my FIL told me he really isn't looking forward to dealing with the TSA. I don't remember exactly, but I think the last time he actually had to deal with the TSA was in 2009 when they flew to Mexico for my sister in law's wedding. And yet here he was, 3 years later, freaking out about what the TSA would do to him. And as far as I know, when he flew to Mexico, nothing out of the ordinary happened since he didn't mention anything the whole week we were all down there together for the wedding.

I have no doubt that there are some well-meaning and competent people who work as TSA employees, and that you have encountered most of them.

I would hope that you would reciprocate that sentiment - that myself and a lot of other people have had experiences with the TSA that justifies an abiding hatred of them.  Most of the TSA people I have encountered look as if their last job was picking up trash on the median of the highway in an orange jumpsuit.  Maybe we just fly into and out of different venues.
