White Smoke & Bells: New Pope Chosen
— Ace

The new pope should appear on the balcony to greet the throngs awaiting him "shortly."

White smoke poured out of the Sistine Chapel chimney Wednesday to roars of joy from the throngs jamming St. Peter's Square.

The new pope, his name not yet revealed, is expected to greet the masses from the balcony of St. Peter's Basillica shortly.

The 115 voting cardinals took four or five votes over two days to reach their decision, which required a two-thirds majority and came after a week of intense meetings.

Italy's Scola an Easy Choice? So speculates the Washington Post.

Rumor Has It... that Andrew Sullivan has already written his blogpost about the new pope, "A Monstrous Choice," and is just waiting for the name before hitting publish.

282 58No offense to anyone. But am I the only one that's just not that interested in this story?

I understand that it's highly important to Catholics and respect that, but it's just not a story that holds my interest.

I am interested in knowing who the new pope is but I've really not been following the story closely.-------------------------------------- As a Latter-Day Saint, the event itself is largely a non-issue.  The new pope isn't going to be my ecclesiastical leader, and I don't expect the leaders of my own church to follow his lead.  However, the pope is the head of one of the largest religious denominations in the world, and an awful lot of people look to him for guidance.  The pope's instruction on various issues can have important consequences over the length of his term. Pope John Paul II is generally thought of as one of the big three (the other two being Reagan and Thatcher) who were responsible for the collapse of Communism.  Put the right man in charge of the Catholic church, and we could see something of similar importance take place.  Put the wrong man in, and things could get a lot worse.

You're not alone. I do think, however, there's a great deal of humor value to be found in Hot Air's Ed Morrissey, whose breathless, on-the-scene-live-at-the-Vatican reporting style has a kind of  charmingly amateurish quality reminiscent of his Santorum reporting during the 2012 primaries:

Ed: 'The smoke is still black, yes. I can see clearly that the smoke is still black.'

Ed (later): 'Still looking, and I see the smoke is still black--no, wait, what? A bird--yes a bird--has perched on the chimney. I'm told by good authority the bird is some kind of...pigeon? No, wait, not a pigeon. A dove! Could that be a sign? No, sorry, wait. My bad. Not a dove. I repeat: it is not a dove. It's definitely a gull. Definitely a gull.'

Ed (still later): 'WHITE SMOKE! WHITE SMOKE! OMG!'

And so on.

365 and for our next thread (from reuters vis drudge):

The Obama administration is drawing up plans to give all U.S. spy agencies full access to a massive database that contains financial data on American citizens and others who bank in the country, according to a Treasury Department document seen by Reuters.

The proposed plan represents a major step by U.S. intelligence agencies to spot and track down terrorist networks and crime syndicates by bringing together financial databanks, criminal records and military intelligence. The plan, which legal experts say is permissible under U.S. law, is nonetheless likely to trigger intense criticism from privacy advocates.

Financial institutions that operate in the United States are required by law to file reports of "suspicious customer activity," such as large money transfers or unusually structured bank accounts, to Treasury's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN).

Certainly that would apply were Eastern Orthodox priests wanting to convert to the Roman Catholic tradition -- given the John Paul II outreach to the Orthodox Church, I can't imagine otherwise; perhaps applicable for converted Lutheran pastors as well. Whether the married priest is asked to practice celibacy, I heard he was. Whether asked, ordered or nothing at all, no telling.

As Catholic cardinals meet to select a new pope in Vatican City, President Barack Obama said in an interview that an American pope would rule just as effectively as a pope from another country.

But would an American pope take orders from him?

“I don’t know if you’ve checked lately, but the Conference of Catholic Bishops here in the United States don’t seem to be takin’ orders from me,” Obama said with a laugh.

I profoundly disagree. A priest is held up as so much more than a math teacher. It's not only fair to hold them to a higher standard, all Catholics should DEMAND it.

Others can do as they wish.

586
Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, SJ, Archbishop of Buenos Aires (Argentina) , was born in Buenos Aires on 17 December 1936. He studied and earned a diploma as a technical chemist, but then chose the priesthood and entered the seminary in Villa Devoto. He entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus on 11 March 1958 and completed his humanities studies in Chile before returning to Buenos Aires in 1963 where he obtained a degree in philosophy from the Philosophy Faculty of the San José Major College in San Miguel.

Between 1964 and 1965, he taught literature and psychology at the Immaculate Mary College in Santa Fe and from 1966, he taught the same subjects at Saviour College in Buenos Aires.

From 1967 to 1970, he studied theology at the Theology Faculty at the San José Major College, in San Miguel. He was ordained a priest on 13 December 1969.

In 1970-71, he finished his third probation at Alcalá de Henares (Spain) and he took his final vows on 22 April 1973.

He was master of novices at Villa Barilari, San Miguel (1972-1973), professor at the Theology Faculty, Provincial Consultor and Rector of the Major College. On 31 July 1973, he was elected Provincial of Argentina, a position he held for many years.

Between 1980 and 1986, he was rector of the Major College and of its Philosophy and Theologoy Faculties. He was also parish priest of Patriarca San José in the diocese of San Miguel.

In March 1986, he went to Germany to finish his doctoral thesis; on his return, he was assigned to the Saviour College, going from there to the Jesuit church in the city of Cordoba as spiritual director and confessor.

On 20 May 1992, Pope John Paul II named him titual Bishop of Auca and Auxiliary Bishop of Buenos Aires. He was consecrated on 27 June in the Cathedral of Buenos Aires by Cardinal Antonio Quarracino, Monsignor Ubaldo Calabresi (Apostolic Nuncio) and bishop of Mercedes-Luján, Monsignor Emilio Ogñénovich.

On 3 June 1997, he was named Coadjutor Archbishop of Buenos Aires and succeeded to full governance of the Archdiocese on 28 February 1998, following the death of Cardinale Quarracino.

He has written the books: «Meditaciones para religiosos» in 1982, «Reflexiones sobre la vida apostólica» in 1986 and «Reflexiones de esperanza» in 1992.

He is Ordinary for the Oriental-Rite faithful living in Argentina without their own Ordinary. He is second vice-president of the Argentinian Bishops' Conference and, as a member of the Executive Committee, is a member of the Permanent Commission representing the Province of Buenos Aires.

He is currently a member of the Episcopal Commission for Catholic Education and of the Argentina Catholic University, of which he is Grand Chancellor.

667 Glenn Beck will be going nuts, there are his favorite words "social justice" Posted by: Snarky the Bear at March 13, 2013 03:31 PM (/b8+5)

People who talk about social justice, especially non-Catholics, always leave out the key theological point behind the Catholic version of it.

"Subsidiarity" is a key piece of the Catholic SJ theology.  This means, you take care of the problem at the lowest level, which is to say, face-to-face.

Otherwise, all you're doing is outsourcing your duty and trying to buy some grace on the cheap.

671 LORD, make us instruments of Your peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is discord, union; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; Where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that we may not seek to much to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardonning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. That's always the result when government tries it.

But there's a ton of research out there that shows faith-based programs are anywhere from 3 to 10 times more effective than government.  Which is why government should just get out of the business altogether.

And what happens when the Catholic church gives it's approval and/or blessing to  the countries perpetuating social justice.

690 "After a pilgrimage to Rome, where he joined the poor in begging at the doors of the churches, he said he had a mystical vision of Jesus Christ in the country chapel of San Damiano, just outside of Assisi, in which the Icon of Christ Crucified said to him, "Francis, Francis, go and repair My house which, as you can see, is falling into ruins." He took this to mean the ruined church in which he was presently praying, and so he sold some cloth from his father's store to assist the priest there for this purpose." http://tinyurl.com/48kdws

691 Miss Marple, it does seem some people do not grasp that concept.  That us poor mortal souls are going 'Mary can you please talk to your Son for me?'

Of course I know of one Church rebuilt after Katrina that seems to push the concept that Saints and Holy Family are lesser gods.  They put statues that survived the storm surge from Katrina into small plain white Greco-Roman style alcoves inside the Church.  They look like mini-temples.  Every time I attend Mass in that Church I cringe.

That's not the way any Church has rolled, TBH.  So let's not pin it all on the RC Church.

And I am unaware of a single example of how the RC Church "blessing" to anything affects how a government acts.

In the Catholic sense, "social justice" is nothing more than giving a person what they deserve.  There are some pretty clear precepts the Church supports, and I think if I laid out those precepts you'd agree with them 100%, but we'd argue about how to implement them.  People who think the Catholic Church itself is pretty much full-on commie have no idea what the Church is really about.

And that includes the people IN that same Church.  Individual priests?  Yes.  But the institutional Church?  No.

Posted by: Sean Bannion at March 13, 2013 11:50 AM (sbV1u)

700 Though Pope Francis has a few hurdles to still clear.  He has been selected but still got the formal investiture ahead.  Got to beat John Paul I' record for a short Papacy.  Then feel out what he can do while retired Pope Panzer is still alive and nearby.

I need to leave, as dog needs to be picked up at vet.

705 Look, I love my church, my faith. But outside of mass on Sunday a lot of people, these are the regular church goers were praying that someone will be chosen who will fix everything, clean everything out, make the Church more transparent. The faithful are completely aware of all the problems in our church. We know we have our work cut out for us and it looks like Pope Francis I knows this too. If everyone is on the same page, it's all good.

Posted by: Snarky the Bear at March 13, 2013 11:54 AM (/b8+5)

Columba Garnica Gallo Bush
parents:

José María Garnica and Josefina Gallo
birthplace: León, Guanajuato, (Central) Mexico

Jeb's son
George Prescott Bush announced his GOP candidacy for TX Land Commissioner.

Given the social/cultural oligarchy ruling Mexico, I wondered who the Garnica and Gallo families are, and after your "sheesh" decided to look. The links that come up searching the father's name regard his daughter. The Independent Populist reports that Mr. Garnica was a migrant worker. Interesting trivia, Columba had
$19,000.00 worth of new clothes and jewelry brought into the country while failing to report. Likely that incident was after she met Jeb Bush in 1971 in León, where he was teaching English as part of a foreign exchange program. Failing to report bringing in $19K at customs aligns with the Bush family "open borders" policy.
