— DrewM There lots of talk out there about how Hillary Clinton is going to walk away with the Democrat nomination for President in 2016 and then sweep into over the charred remains of whatever sacrificial lamb the GOP offers up.
My response to that idea: Nuts. In fact, I don't think she'll run, and if she does she won't be the nominee, and if she is, she'll lose the general.
But assuming she does run for the nomination letÂ’s remember a few things about Hillary:
For starters, she’s not a very good candidate. After spending much of the 2008 cycle as the “inevitable” nominee it turned out she was quite evitable (fun fact, that’s actually a word).
A disorganized and bloated campaign team, her accent of the week depending on the crowd she was talking to and her earthy every woman drinking habits, Hillary annoyed a lot of people. She may have been “likable enough” as Barack Obama famously put it but not enough to win over Democrats. Remember her big breakthrough in terms of connecting with voters was when she cried on the eve of the New Hampshire primary. Had she not done that, the nomination race between her and Obama might not have lasted as long as it did.
Democrats in general don’t like re-run candidates. The GOP is the party of “next in line” while the Democrats are the party “Ohhhhh….Shiny!”. Maybe the chance to elect the first woman President will be enough to overcome the Democrats historic resistance to giving losers a second look. Since the birth of the modern primary contest in 1968, the Democrats have only nominated someone for President who ran for the nomination before once…Al Gore ran in 1988 and won the nomination in 2000. Of course he was the siting Vice President at the time so it was a unique situation (Walter Mondale was the nominee in 84, having lost with Jimmy Carter in 80 but he never ran on his own prior to 84).
History isnÂ’t destiny but odds are the Democrats will stay true to form and fall for someone new and exciting. This doesnÂ’t bode well for Joe Biden either (though he might get the sitting VP exemption).
But the Democrats will want to make history and nominate a woman more than find someone shiny and new to get behind you say. Well, it might not be an either/or situation. Luckily for Democrats they may get to do that AND have the chance to make history if Elizabeth Warren runs.
And let’s not forget that Hillary’s record of accomplishment is still pretty spotty. Yes, she was able to squirm out too much blame for Benghazi the first time around but you can bet Biden isn’t going to lay down quietly while Hillary runs around taking credit for Obama’s “gutsy calls” and saying Biden was frady scared. Biden is a whacky guy but he’s been around the block a lot more times than Hillary. He’s got a network of his own and he knows where plenty of bodies are buried. No one doubts there’s plenty of dirt out there on Hillary and not only will Biden know about it, he’ll know how to get it out into the public. A primary battle between two top veterans of the Obama administration will simply lay the ground work GOP attacks to come later.
And about being a veteran of the Obama administrationÂ…thatÂ’s not looking so hot right about now is it? Sure itÂ’s a long way to go and Hillary got out before the ACA mess hit the front pages but one year into ObamaÂ’s second term and IÂ’m not getting the sense thereÂ’s going to be a lot of energy for what would amount to a 3rd Obama term.
Yes, Hillary was on the foreign policy side of the shop but from the failed stimulus plan, and “cash for clunkers” to record debt and the ACA, there’s a lot of wreckage to answer for. Hillary simply isn’t a good enough politician to avoid responsibility for 8 years of Democratic missteps as Obama was.
Speaking of 8 years of Democratic disastersÂ….three straight presidential terms for a party is a pretty rare thing. Since the passage of the Twenty-Second Amendment (limiting a President to two terms), only once has a party held the White House in three consecutive elections (Reagan in 80 and 84 and George H.W. Bush in 8
. Al Gore couldnÂ’t parlay the seeming peace and the prosperity of the go-go economy of the 90s into a 3rd Democrat term (though he came close by winning the popular vote).
One other factor to consider is who the GOP nominates (assuming Hillary is the nominee). One can hope, though maybe expect is too strong, that next time around the Republicans will manage to nominate someone who isnÂ’t as inept and out of step with the electorate as Mitt Romney was.
A last factor to consider is age. Hillary is going to be 66 in two days. That means when we get to the start of primary voting in a little over 2 years (January/February of 2016) sheÂ’s going to be 68 and will turn 69 just before election day of 2016. Some people will say itÂ’s sexist to think about age and appearance but in a world of high-definition TV, these things matter. McCain and Romney were about the same age as Hillary will be and they didnÂ’t fare so well against a younger, more energetic candidate (and for all his other faults, Romney is a freak of nature when it comes to appearance and energy for a guy his age). DonÂ’t forget, Hillary had some health issues towards the end of her tenure as Secretary of State and people were talking about her being rundown after 4 years traveling the world.
Maybe the stunt casting of electing the first woman will be enough to overcome the economic ennui of the Obama years or the fiasco we are seeing unfolding that is the Affordable Care Act wonÂ’t look so bad by the time Hillary runs for the nomination or in the general but to say the combination of facts as we know them at this moments means Hillary Clinton is simply killing time until noon on January 20, 2017 is either wishcasting by Team Clinton or the residual disbelief among Republicans that Obama was able to win reelection given the status of the economy.

No way in hell will they master the Pander bear to the point they dislodge Queen Pander.

First off, Hitlery is a Democrat. All sins are therefore forgiven (see: Obama B. H. and drug sales, missing records, terrorist pals, etc.). Second, she's a Clinton, and Bubba knows how to get things done, politically.
Finally, she is alleged to have Female Bits, and can therefore give her party a twofer on having President Historic First©.
Even a corrupt shrew can make it given those advantages.
Oh, and like Choom Boy, she still has a shitload of slavering fans....

Beagle posted this Fox News link in last night's ONT:
Soldiers attending a pre-deployment briefing at Fort Hood say they were told that evangelical Christians and members of the Tea Party were a threat to the nation and that any soldier donating to those groups would be subjected to punishment under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
A soldier who attended the Oct. 17th briefing told me the counter-intelligence agent in charge of the meeting spent nearly a half hour discussing how evangelical Christians and groups like the American Family Association were “tearing the country apart.”

- Sitting/former VP (see Hubert Humphrey, Walter Mondale and Algore Goracle)
- New and shiny (see Peanut Farmer, Tank Dukakis, S(l)ick Willie, Jean Kerry and Teh SCOAMT, with a partial nod to George McGovern)
- Old and busted (only stuck in to partially account for McGovern, though he entered the 1968 race only after all the primaries and caucuses were done and finished a distant third in that convention).
The only way the White House becomes Hiliary Clinton's is if she keeps everybody else out of the primaries.

My biggest fear is simply the "woman" card. I just think the "first woman President" line is going to resonate with a demographic we already have major issues with because the nation has changed on things like abortion and homosexuality.
Also, Hillary could easily play the classic Clintonian triangulation where she runs against Obama on something like ObamaCare and independents will eat it up.
Hillary though is definitely a poor retail candidate which is why she lost to Obama in the primaries despite having every advantage in the world.
But if any other Democrat gets the nomination, I think it will be the Republicans to lose. You get an old, white male as the Democrat nominee from some state in the Northeast and it will be Michael Dukakis 2.0
I honestly think it would be a smarter strategy for Republicans to engage in Operation Chaos on a national level to make sure she doesn't get the nomination.

Obama is an obviously, completely, hilariously unfit, uninteresting, uncharismatic, bumbling, unworldly, really ridiculous public figure - has been from the start.
That he was even a state senator, much less a US one or PRESIDENT, is all about the degradation of the country and electorate, not about him.

Yup, I think the whole "Historic First!!11!" thing will give her the nomination.
I also think (sadly) that she will win the general because, as we have learned so painfully from the last two elections, you should never underestimate the power of Stupid People in Large Groups.

The one demographic though that the GOP has to do well with but is losing at a rapid pace is suburban white women, and that's exactly the type of voter I see Hillary attracting.

I'd love to believe you, Drew, but Hillary! is running. She's laying the groundwork with Clinton BFF running for governor in Virginia. You didn't think McAuliffe picked the perennial purple state of Virginia by accident, do you? If McAuliffe wins, and Hillary! is doing all she can to ensure that, he'll be there to help her campaign.
Hillary! has also done a good job of sequestering Weiner from her top aide, Huma. Weiner was nothing but a leprotic sore on her campaign and she got him disinfected pretty quickly.
She's laying pretty low right now, knowing that the public - fickle as they are - will forget all about her gaffes, screwups, etc. in a couple of years. Her campaign will then hammer home how great she is while accenting the ineptitude of her Democratic challenger.
Hillary! is running. Take it to the bank.
And unless there is a hard left groundswell against her for Chief Warren, she's the Democratic nominee.

As un-PC as it may be to say it, female candidates have to deal with a handicap that male candidates don't. Namely, female candidates take a big hit at the polls if they're not at least somewhat attractive. It's not the way things ought to be, but it's the way things are.
And Hilary isn't even remotely attractive.
That by itself might be enough to torpedo her chances.

This is a nice thought, Drew. Unfortunately, Barack Obama has proven ANYONE is electable if the media is in their corner.
And consider the flip side of the coin: why do you think our last two primary cycles have had, mostly, a bunch of back-benchers? Running for the presidency as a Republican is an incredible sacrifice considering the nastyness of the oppositon.
I agree that Hilary isn't inevitable. There's enough people who see that the presidency is a Democrat's for the taking, and consequently resent the idea that it's just going to be handed to her without a fight.
If the electorate was going to wake up, it would have done so already.

The fact that Obama won in 2012 despite losing independent voters to Romney by over 10 points is like drawing a Royal Flush. Hillary is just not going to have that sort of devoted turnout.
Any other time in history, losing the independent vote by 10 points would have been a landslide loss. Bush lost the independent vote in 2004 yet still won the Presidency by a decently comfortable margin.

Sure she is has zero skills, zero experience, and is dumber than a creosote post, not to mention crookeder than a dogs hind leg.
But so was Obama. It all depends on "who's turn it is" with the RNC. If they run yet another "moderate" she will win. If the feckless set of asshole leadership in the House passes amnesty and squares it with the Senate, at the same time they run another shitty moderate, she will win by greater than 10%

If Bill dies soon, she's a shoo in.
You can't buy publicity like that. The MFM will wax poetic about the "Clinton Legacy" for at least a month, whitewash everything and Hillary will become the next Jackie Kennedy for a few months, until she bravely steps up to continue the Clinton Legacy.
She'll get all the benefit with none of the baggage and no one will dare say anything mean about the "poor widow of an American hero".

If by "complex" you mean systemic, I agree. The problem is widespread but, IMHO, is in no way complicated. The problem is that after 40 some years of steady effort the left's control of public education has finally suceeded in dumbing down the electorate to the point where critical thinking is virtually nonexistant and people decide en-masse to support whoever and whatever the "Cool Kids" think is "cool".
And the "Cool Kids" are the Democrats.

Reagan was sincere in his beliefs and was able to project that. But that's not the main thing. It's a different country than it was in 1984. I don't see how the Democrats can lose no matter who they nominate. Evidence: November 2012.

Hilary has said explicitly that she isn't interested in seeking elective office ever again. I realize that you have to take that with a gigantic grain of salt, but at some point when politicians say they aren't running again, you do have to take them seriously.
Supposedly Hilary was phoning it in as Sec State, not doing late hours, commuting early back home from Washington on weekends, etc. After being destroyed by Obama last go-round, after watching all her supposed allies jump behind him (instead of her), and after being 8 years older now, she simply may not have the desire to run a hard campaign again. Apart from the wishful thinking of others projecting her into the office, I don't see much from HER indicating that she really wants this.

Whether Hillary runs or not, any Democratic Party candidate who wins the 2016 primaries has a very good chance of winning the general election--a better chance than any possible GOP nominee, even Joe Biden.
For one thing, according to various articles, the GOP Establishment and its coterie of big money donors are taking steps to neutralize the Tea Party elements of the conservative base, whom they perceive as an extremist, 'wacko-bird' fringe. Unlike Democratic Party leadership, which harnesses the energy of its base to accomplish policy goals and win elections, the Republican Party leadership is actively combatting its base, viewing itself as enlightened and compassionate while perceiving its most loyal voting bloc as a pack of revanchist racists--although I fail to see how pushing immigration reform and de facto amnesty in order to exploit the possibilities for sweet, cheap labor is either enlightened or compassionate. In any event, the divisions within the GOP widen and I don't think a fragmented Republican Party torn by animus and internal strife can beat a unified Democratic Party in a national election.
And then, of course, there's the simple fact that Democrats cheat. It's taken the radical elements of that Party decades to acquire power and I just can't believe they'll ever give up that power as the result of a free and fair election.

Hillary will still appeal to those in transition. It takes a lot of real world beatings to break down the old programming. Obama is only the starting line for a lot of those people who will transition.

You mewling puppy. Get a man's gun. Atlanta Armory has Snyder conversion Enfields imported from that warehouse in Nepal. They are chambered for .577 caliber. That is a minnie ball over 70 grains of FFG black powder in a cartridge that looks very much like an old paper walled shotgun shell. The troops in India complained bitterly when they had to turn them in to be replaced with the girly .45/.577 Martini-Henry rifle. That is why the arsenal at Dum Dum experimented with hollow point bullets in order to get the same sort of destructive terminal ballistics from the smaller .45 caliber bullet as they used to see from the full sized .577 slug.
.308 - don't make me laugh.

The same forces that didn't want Hillary to be president in 2008 are still out there and still don't want her to be president. She has tried to prostitute herself to them by being a good little Obama toad but it won't work.
And Drew is 100% right about the Dems almost never going back to a candidate who lost before. They just don't do it. Their nominating system is more wide open and much easier to game by an insurgent candidate. Howard Dean would have been the Dem nominee in 2004 if he had not self-destructed. Bill Clinton himself was an insurgent candidate in 1992. The only times the Dems have gone with "the guy whose turn it was" were Mondale and Gore, and they both lost.
Barack Obama became a legit threat to Hillary with one speech at an Iowa Jefferson-Jackson dinner. There will be someone else who will step up into that role, whether it's Lizzy Warren, Martin O'Malley, or someone we don't even know about who wins a surprise election in 2014 (Wendy Davis, God forbid?) and becomes the New Shiny Toy.
Posted by: rockmom at October 24, 2013 09:44 AM (Q4elb)
Drew, I'm afraid I must disagree when you say that "Democrats didn't like her." She beat Obama like a red-headed stepchild in every major primary; where Obama cleaned up was in the states that used caucuses: his organization was very good at stacking the electorate (that good old Chicago electioneering coming to the forefront). You may beat the Clinton machine once, but not twice; it's safe to assume that she's learned from her mistakes, and will not overlook the caucuses again.
One other point: If not her, who? The Democratic bench is not deep. No rational person takes Biden seriously. I just don't see anyone who can stop her.
And yes, she will win the general. In fact, I predict that no Republican will be elected president as long as I live (I'm 61, so figure the next five or six elections). Consider the obstacles:
* A press that is effectively a DNC PR organization.
* A praetorian-guard federal bureaucracy that is throwing its weight behind the party.
* Business, especially big businesses, that is afraid to oppose the regime, or is profiting from crony capitalism.
* All in support of a party that lusts for power and will stop at nothing to keep it.
Against that coalition, a principled, smaller-government opposition won't have a prayer. Trust me, I've lived in Chicago all my life: I see how this works here. While I shudder to see the country being turned into Cook County writ large, our last chance to stop it was in November 2012, and we failed. Our constitutional republic is in its death throes, and there's nothing you or I or anyone else can do about it.

limited government is dead for the time being. The leftists have controlled public education long enough that we live in a world of people willing to petition for the repeal of the bill of rights. Add to that the leftist control of the media where limited government candidates are demonized unfairly, and leftists are lionized undeservingly, and it is obvious to me that it doesn't matter who we run. Doesn't matter who they run. In all cases, limited government will be suppressed and statism will be promoted.
Until we reprogram the uneducated masses, and until there is a prominent conduit of unbiased press coverage, it is not about our candidate or their candidate. It is a the era for big government. Especially considering many in the GOP are just as guilty as Democrats at promoting huge spending, deficits, and entitlements.
Those of us that pine for individual liberty and want government to live within its constraints are fighting an uphill battle.

If anything, her negatives have all increased since then. She's tied by the hip to inarguably the worst foreign policy administration since Carter (and probably longer). She's not any younger, healthier, or better looking. And when people look at her, they're going to tie her failed pre-Obamacare healthcare overhaul effort with the current stinkpot.

I'm not quite there yet, but I understand how easy it is to get discouraged.
If anyone besides Hillary gets nominated, I think we will have a big advantage, but if we're up against "first woman President" nonsense, I think the deck may be stacked against us. If we had already had a woman President, Hillary would be easily beat as she's a terrible candidate.
Had about 1.5% of the vote flipped in 2012, Romney would have won. Had just the same Republican voters that showed up in 2004 showed up in 2012, we would have won a landslide.
A few years of the middle class getting slaughtered with ObamaCare is going to be a big opening for a conservative IF we don't fuck it up.

While I don't think the candidates will be nearly as bad as the slate we had to choose from in 2012, I'm already having deja vu of GOP nominees pounding away and killing each other at months at the delight and instigation of the MFM.
