With One Week Until January 1st, Obama Still Has Not Signed Up For Obamacare
— Ace

He's putting out the word: Sign up for Obamacare, exactly like I didn't.

Apparently he's staying on his "old, crappy fake-sham Bad Apple insurance" as long as the law permits him to.

And maybe even after that -- he can always suspend that part of the law, should it become inconvenient.

Meanwhile, an ad is now running against Jean Shaheen which can be easily used against every Democrat who voted for Obamacare, which is practically every single one of them. (A couple of House Democrats in tough seats were permitted to vote against it, to fool their constituents; a few of those may still even be in office.)

Oh, and people are "poised" to gain health insurance. Like the economy is "poised" to grow.

13 It will single payer, with a two tier result. The special snowflake class will have superb care facilities and access to the best doctors. Most of us will get the all encompassing sub-standard care where you die waiting if you have a serious illness. Just look at the NHS in the UK where this leads.

Serious question. Is this even possible? Most of the advances in medicine are very capital-intensive at this point (someone correct me if I'm wrong) and there is simply no way to recoup a multi-billion dollar investment in drugs and technologies if the only market for them is the "Ruling Class", which I presume will be very, very small. The whole of modern science is dependent on the mass market. Trying to limit it to just a small market will completely undermine the economics. Then, the human resources issues will kill the industry if that doesn't. No one with a brain is going to become a doctor or go into the kinds of engineering that lead to medical device technologies. So, I know it's possible in the very short-run, but I can't see it lasting beyond that, as financial, physical and human capital gets allocated to better uses. Not to say that these idiots don't think it's possible, but I don't think it is in actual real life. You can't have Cadillac medicine, no matter how rich you are, if the industry itself is only getting Yugo-level investments.

116 Serious question. Yeah eventually, the ruling class will have to do what millions of wealthy people from other countries did when they came here for treatment--find another country to get care. The only thing us that every other country is going to suffer from our Obamacare, as well. The US pharmaceutical and medical device companies fund the bulk of research that benefits everyone around the globe. Just as the rest of the world suffers (except the bad guys) when we cut our defense and are no longer the world's lone Super Power. In his quest to destroy America, Obama has screwed the rest of the world in so many ways.

My MIL's husband developed drugs for a big pharmaceutical co. (now retired). Apparently his co. (and probably others) have recently been outsourcing drug development to other companies outside of the US. But yeah, it will naturally slow down if Obamacare doesn't mandate that these new drugs be covered and they can't find rich Americans/Platinum-level health plans to cover them, right?

I would assume the same holds true for medical tech advances - if hospitals can't afford to purchase them, or upgrade as often for bid expenses like an MRI machine, that should slow things down, too,

Posted by: Sudden Clarity Clarence at December 17, 2013 08:15 PM (cUbs5) I don't know, but the ruling class lived very well compared to the peasantry in the pre-industrial era. Maybe they think that present-day technology will allow them to live much better than that if they monopolize the world's resources for themselves. Maybe they think that progress in medical science grinding to a halt, or slowing to a crawl, is OK as long as they can have the best that today's science can offer. That is orders of magnitude better than what the ruling classes of ages past had, after all.

168 With Obamacare we will revert back to life expectancies slightly better than the 1950-1960s. Most people need little care before they are 60.and most of the expensive advances have been for cancer and old age. My Mother lived 20 years past (due to those advances) what she would have in the 50s. My father still lives and likely would have been gone 10 years ago. The ability wont disappear just who it is used on. And advancement will have tocome from elsewhere Hahahahahahah

Posted by: Flatbush Joe at December 17, 2013 08:18 PM (ZPrif)"

But I would imagine that most of the cutting-edge stuff they have was developed in the US originally, on account of the massive US market. I don't doubt that the US political class is stupid enough to think they can preserve what's best in the system for themselves and give the rest of us pain pills, but I just don't see how the actual real-world activities necessary for that to happen will end up working that way. Even if you eliminated all labor costs and could force scientists to work for free, you couldn't develop drugs for a market the size of the ruling class. If there's no market for it, there's no drug. You can't conjure it up by magic.

I do worry, though, that the Left's 'cargo cult' mentality extends into even the most hard-core scientific fields like medicine. If Barky just learned that buying health insurance is complicated, wait till he gets wind of how complex it is to develop a single drug or medical device. Of course, that idiot will probably say "I'm better at developing drugs than the head of drug development at a pharma company".

Mostly in parts north of Staffordshire / Shropshire, and the Celtic fringe (including Cornwall).

The north (and west) is grim. Seriously, it's Detroit but with native-born chavs. The weather is awful, the soil is thin; there's no reason to live there, unless you like digging coal.

People who do live in these difficult parts of Britain tend to grasp at straws. The Scots, for one, are known to be heavily dependent on London cheese. They need the NHS to supplement the paltry income they get from their phony-baloney jobs.

207 158 The NHS is total shit, so why are there so many people who seem so devoted to it? Ideology, I guess? It's all they know. The system has been in place for a long time--people have forgotten what privatized healthcare looks like. Plus the MFM props it up, and it works fine if you are healthy. And politicians always are scare mongering about reductions in benefits if the taxes don't go up to sustain it. People are scared of change. Posted by: runningrn at December 17, 2013 08:33 PM (PLOz This is why I keep saying that an economic collapse could turn out to be a blessing in disguise. England and many other countries have had socialized medicine for generations. Their citizens today can no more imagine free market health care than I can imagine lighting my house with oil lamps. But we Americans have not gotten used to that, and an economic collapse will make it very clear that we as a nation can't afford it.

Other countries can insist on reduced prices from drug companies because the drug co.' know they can recoup their development expenses from full-price sales in the US. Once Americans stop paying for drugs (because most are no longer covered), then what? Maybe countries like Brazil will be pissed that they can no longer get things like AIDS drugs on the cheap.

Posted by: Sudden Clarity Clarence at December 17, 2013 08:47 PM (cUbs5) I'm just trying to guess what the ruling class might be thinking. Throughout history, elites have been satisfied with economic and technological stagnation as long as they had the best of what the world had to offer. It was only the rise of capitalism that allowed an acceleration in technological progress, and rapid increase in the standard of living for the majority of people. But the rise of a comfortable, independent middle class also reduced the power of the elites. It seems to me that the hereditary nobility has hated and resented America from the beginning. Modern-day Marxist and socialist ideology seeks to destroy the middle class and create a sort of "neo-feudalism", in which the elites will once again lord it over the "masses" and enjoy the best that the world has to offer. These people seem to value power over all else. In a competitive society their position is not assured, but is constantly threatened by innovation from below. Maybe they would accept technological stagnation in exchange for assuring an iron grip at the top of society's heap.

He was a tremendous "capitalist" when rising. But when he was at the top, he wanted socialism to guarantee his place and his family's continued place in society. And yes, most Europeans of the wealthy class HATE Americans because of the back and forth and ebb and flow of fortunes.
