Words We Don't Have In English That We Probably Should
— Ace

Via Instapundit, some good words English just doesn't have word for.

A few examples:

2 Arigata-meiwaku (Japanese): An act someone does for you that you didnÂ’t want to have them do and tried to avoid having them do, but they went ahead anyway, determined to do you a favor, and then things went wrong and caused you a lot of trouble, yet in the end social conventions required you to express gratitude

Kind of convoluted but I know what they mean, I think, or at least something like that. I've been in the situation, trying to ingratiate myself to a girl, of suggesting we do something I'm guessing she'd like, and she agrees, thinking that's what I'd like, but in fact neither of us wanted to do this thing at all, so now here we are, trying to mutually please the other and both failing at at and now mutually displeased, eating a joint of mutton at Medieval Times.

Well no not Medieval Times but something.

3 Backpfeifengesicht (German): A face badly in need of a fist

Seems useful but I think maybe spelling it out in words is even better: "A face badly in need of a fist." Not sure I want to cut that down into a one-word thing.

5 Desenrascanço (Portuguese): “to disentangle” yourself out of a bad situation (To MacGyver it)

...

9 Guanxi (Mandarin): in traditional Chinese society, you would build up good guanxi by giving gifts to people, taking them to dinner, or doing them a favor, but you can also use up your gianxi by asking for a favor to be repaid

That idea exists in the English-speaking word but I don't know how you'd say it briefly.

11 L’esprit de l’escalier (French): usually translated as “staircase wit,” is the act of thinking of a clever comeback when it is too late to deliver it

I think maybe we have that, now: "Jerkstore."

22 Tatemae and Honne (Japanese): What you pretend to believe and what you actually believe, respectively

Very useful -- we talk about this when we talk about preference cascades.

5 2 Arigata-meiwaku.

This happens to me.  I keep telling people, "Please don't buy me Christmas or birthday presents.  I don't need anything.  If I do need something, I go out and buy it, instead of hinting around that someone should provide it."

But I still get presents.  And I still have to say thank you (which I do sincerely).  And the cycle continues.   I hope I don't sound like a dick, cos I'm not, I just don't want to get presents.

23 "Arigata-meiwaku" Here's a better example: I don't like chocolate or sweets in general. When my birthday comes around, someone will insist on making me a cake. I tell them not to go to trouble, but thank them for the offer anyway. I don't feel like answering a million questions about what's wrong with me for being born without a fully developed sweet tooth, so I sidestep the issue. Then the person decides to surprise me with a chocolate cake anyway. Naturally, I'm forced to eat an entire piece or else it'll hurt that person's feelings. I hate chocolate, cake, and feeling like I owe someone a favor, so you can imagine what this does to me.

24 "Taarof" in Farsi is such a word. I characterize it as "a whole bunch of rapid fire passive aggressive behavior, dressed up in the context of polite manners, that prevents me from getting that last piece of meat because you gave it to that bitter old lady." Wikipedia says: It is a way of denying your will to please your counterpart, however the will is only denied because of the custom and not to please the counterpart. But there are situations where tarof persist upon a request to make the counterpart genuinely satisfied. Tarof often causes misunderstandings between both parties and is a source for awkward situations in a social setting.

33 Equity and political capital are versions of Guanxi.  They are a bit more specific than the Chinese version in that they do not apply to every situation.  Equity is often used when someone screws up but understands they have built up a lot of equity on the job from past successes etc...

Karma is another word we use for a similar sentiment.

BTW, I think the Germans always make new words by just combining other words.  IIRC a glove is something like a handshoe.  Not the most poetic of people that lot.

This is like the thing they do in many countries where it's customary for a host to give their guests a gift, which the guest is then expected to respond to with a gift of equal or greater value.   Turning down the gift is considered very, very rude, just as it's rude to not repay the gift.   I've known at least one person who was dreading visiting family in... was it Taiwan?  Because she KNEW her grandmother was going to do this, even though she'd asked her not to, and she didn't   want to deal with    the    social etiquette of receiving a gift she didn't want and hadn't asked for, that would probably be quite expensive, and which she'd then have to repay in    some way    without offending her grandmother.

107 Ace, Yesterday you wanted a new descriptor for our "elites" and I think I have a word for you. Peacock. Think about it. They're overly aggressive and showy as all fuck. They try and give the appearance that they're something spectacular, but in the end they're all just stupid fucking birds. What is typical liberal elite? Somebody who is overly aggressive with their views and makes a big fucking show about it trying to prove how great they are and how much better they are than you. But beyond all the agression and fluff, they're nothing more than irrespectable little shits. Also, peacock has the word cock in it. So that's something, I guess.

125 This is like the thing they do in many countries where it's customary for a host to give their guests a gift, which the guest is then expected to respond to with a gift of equal or greater value.

128 Stupid question time.  Let's say that Obama manages to achieve the plan to mint platinum coins to back the debt.  What if he gets the bright idea to totally remove the gold in the Federal Reserve, place a neat, small stack of Platinum Obamacoins in their place, and sell off the gold?

Here's why I think that might be a possibility.  Politicians love to take things of intrinsic value and trade them for promises.  Eg they trade tax increases now for the promise of future cute.  Or they traded Social Security's funds with IOUs.

Two questions:  One, would that change anything?  Two, if this hare-brained plan to back debt with phony-value coins works, why isn't my scenario likely?

Kind of convoluted but I know what they mean, I think, or at least something like that. I've been in the situation, trying to ingratiate myself to a girl, of suggesting we do something I'm guessing she'd like, and she agrees, thinking that's what I'd like, but in fact neither of us wanted to do this thing at all, so now here we are, trying to mutually please the other and both failing at at and now mutually displeased, eating a joint of mutton at Medieval Times.

Bad example. Not that I can think of a better one of the top of my head, but that is a bit different I think, than 2 people both doing something they think the other likes.

It's more like "help" that doesn't help and isn't wanted, but you have to act grateful for it even though it fucked your shit up worse, because you know the stupid idiot was trying so hard to be helpful when he made everything worse.

177 Id like a word for liberal pseudo-philosophers and professors who purposely dont dress properly, comb, cut their hair or shave (purposely disheveled) in order to give off the appearance of being too busy pondering man's deepest questions to be distracted by such silly notions as grooming... as a cover for sloth.

---

I see a good deal of resemblance between myself and the character Kurt Wallander on Wallander, a sometimes series featured on PBS's Masterpiece Theater (which I watch because I'm an intellectual and shit).  So the other night old Kurt was bumbed because he had to kill this guy who had it coming but he was still a guy so he had let his personal hygiene deteriorate.  He finally went back to his boss at the police station and told her he wanted to come back.  She told him that they would try it but that he literally stunk.  He went into his office, sniffed under his arms, removed his shirt, then used the drapes to mop up any excess perspiration.  I thought, yes, they have captured the real me.

195 Btw, whenever there was an issue, this guy would point out that he sorts the mail. Actually, the super hates that, too, because this is one of his courtesies he performs extra diligently around the holidays, or tries to before this douche steps on his holiday tips. But that was one incident... My BFF helped her BF move on Christmas Day one year, and he dumped her right after. She came to my house afterward, and I told her she could smoke in the hall since it was raining out. (I get awful sinus infections from cigarette smoke now.) This guy knocked on the fucking door and complained. On Christmas. And I shit you not, he brought up the mail sorting. "I'm a nice guy, I sort the mail." Then I asked the landlord to ask him and his friends to take their party indoors when it ran close to midnight, because they were drunk and sticking their heads into my skylights to look at my apt and they were loud. Again with the sorting the mail, at which point I told him to shove it up his ass for all I cared.

The definition provided for Tatemae - Honne is not the single, one-and-only definition.  It's certainly accurate, but there are important variations on this definition.  The whole concept of the Tatemae - Honne dichotomy is culturally quite central to Japanese life.

It's all hugely bound up with the imperative to maintain broad-based "Wa" or harmony, whether within or across groups.  Careful cultivation and manipulation of the Tatemae - Honne construct helps to preserve "Wa" in Japanese society.

I heartily recommend Bob Whiting's aptly-titled book about Japanese baseball (and American Major Leaguers crashing it), "You Gotta Have Wa," for a great and non-mystical explication/illumination of this whole phenomenon.

(I've lived off-and-on in Tokyo since 1988, a dubious accomplishment flowing from my 4 years of formal Japanese language coursework in undergrad.)

Someone on this thread mentioned that this dichotomy is suggestive of hypocrisy.  In some cases, yes, yes it is.

But consider hypocrisy a matter of Free Will:  You can choose to not merely pay lip-service, or to suck up to some one or some group, or whatever.

In contrast, the Tatemae - Honne dichotomy has mostly evolved out of a straitjacketed social circumstance, indeed out of a historical tendency in Japan towards benevolent dictatorship in terms of social roles, responsibilities, stratification, etc.  In short, limited to no free will, or at least the expression of what one truly wants (as opposed to what one is obligated to perform, submit to, etc.) limited to a very small, trusted, and like-minded in-group.

The twist on this more "nuanced" view of the Tatemae - Honne dichotomy is that some people, while not openly rebelling against whatever given situation creates an expectation of obedience, do manage in some cases to very artfully finesse the lip-service expected of them in the immediate term, while in the medium-to-longer term actually maneuvering people and processes to go the way that their Free Will would have them exercise  -- just not openly in a Japanese setting.  So they get their way, and those expecting adherence to the Tatemae  surface-level-only approach are also mollified if neutralized.

259 I want a word for sending a guy to one specific store to buy one specific thing required to allow dinner to be finished...but, then the guy goes to another store, which never has the thing in question and he strolls in and says I went to Store X and they did not have it, so when will dinner be ready. So far, all I have is justifiable homicide, but, that is two words.

Wool-gathering, as in, 'Oh, I'm sorry, excuse me, I was wool-gathering. You were saying?'

It's a great word. It implies that your mind was busily at work but not focused on the discussion at hand.

267 What's the word for doing this, but then realizing five minutes into the babbling that there is actually a point to it, and now you have to ask about things said four minutes ago but you weren't listening so you're embarrassed to have to admit "I wasn't listening for five minutes, assuming it was your typical drivel, but now I have to ask what you said five minutes ago because I need to catch up?" ---------- ADHD.

277 9 Guanxi (Mandarin) aka Karma

Don't think karma quite captures it.    Karma involves some sort of universal accounting system where your actions get you what you deserve.

Guanxi literally means relationships.  A friendship is under guanxi, but is certainly not karma.  Connections, influence, goodwill, those are words that better map its meaning.

279 "L’esprit de l’escalier (French): usually translated as “staircase wit,” is the act of thinking of a clever comeback when it is too late to deliver it" L'esprit de escalier is "the spirit of the staircase" where what you should have said occurs to you as you are leaving and it's too late to be of any use. And it's not really a word. It's a whole phrase that describes a thing where your muse came through but only just when the argument was over. So French doesn't really have that "word" anymore than English does. French people had to build a phrase just like English people do. "Ooh burn, but way late dude. " Guanxi (Mandarin) is "brownie points" or "goodwill" or the old concept of "marker". Germans just glue conglomerate words together into new words which could be done in english but would look stupid. We do some lame tries at it like 'skinny jeans' or 'shit eating grin' but it looks stupid when we literally copy the technique directly as in " hatobviouslyworn just tohideabaldspotfromtheyoungwomenatthecoffeebarthatdoesn'tfoolanybody"

No shit...my parents were visiting and of course, Mom 'tidied up my kitchen'.  Of course, it took me twenty minutes to find the fucking salt. I am really sick of friends and family 'helping' me when not asked.  Today, this neighbor of mine asked if I wanted anything from Costco since she was going.  I said sure, thanks, I could use x, y and z.   No timeline indicated. Was napping and heard and ignored the phone. Dog started barking so I got up and said neighbor threw all the stuff on the front porch and started screaming at me about helping her unload the groceries.  I was still groggy while I took the stuff in the house, but managed a 'thanks, same to you' without looking at her as she stomped off. Bitch.

283 90 Id like a word for liberal pseudo-philosophers and professors who purposely dont dress properly, comb, cut their hair or shave (purposely disheveled) in order to give off the appearance of being too busy pondering man's deepest questions to be distracted by such silly notions as grooming... as a cover for sloth.

285 "9 Guanxi (Mandarin): in traditional Chinese society, you would build up good guanxi by giving gifts to people, taking them to dinner, or doing them a favor, but you can also use up your gianxi by asking for a favor to be repaid."

The English word for that? Politics - at least, politics Chicago-style. Edward C. Banfield's book "Political Influence" uses cases studies in Chicago politics to describe how political influence, or "clout", is a commodity that can be accumulated, measured, and redeemed.

In fact, "The Lisle Letters", which describe politics in the England of Henry VIII, people are continually giving gifts and otherwise doing favors for each other, in the hope of getting a share of the booty. Much like the Obama administration, actually - minus the beheadings (so far, at least).

"Arigata-meiwaku"

No here is truly a good example.

I returned from college to find that a parent had done me a "favor"(without asking) by taking my cheapo road bike to the local bike shop to have it tuned up/spruced up with the intension of surprising me with it on my return. Of course, they didn't have a proper discussion with the bike shop on the work to be performed and its cost, and refused to pay the bill. I returned home to have it explained to me that my bike was being held by the bike shop till the bill (more than the bike was worth) was paid by me.

Arigata-meiwaku!

288 I know I'm late to the discussion here, but that first Japanese phrase, for when someone does something you didn't want them to do, that pisses you off, and then they expect you to be grateful, forcing you to beat your head against a wall for the nth time, that describes my first marriage.

I may have slightly re-defined "arigata-meiwaku" a little for my purposes.  Maybe his current fiance, future ex-wife #4, can use it.

Backpfeifengesicht (German)-Seems useful but I think maybe spelling it out in words is even better: "A face badly in need of a fist." Not sure I want to cut that down into a one-word thing.

Depends how often you need to use it.  If you used it alot, like the Germans maybe did once-upon-a-time, you'd see the utility of having just one word.

It's probably not 1 word persay. Germans have a habit of trying to smush their entire language into 1 giant compound uberword.
