World to USA: "your notions of democracy suck ass" [Purp]
— Open Blogger

Even with the worldwide Obama lovefest bump from 2008-2012, we're still under the 50% mark in the "shining example" category with a lot of countries.

Although there's no 2012 data on them, we're probably still a solid lock with Ghana, Ivory Coast, and Kenya based on the 2007 figures, so at least we got that. Given their dysfunctional systems, looking impressive isn't a big deal though.

If the USA isn't setting a (perceived) positive example for others and inspiring them, then what the hell are we doing? And should we keep doing whatever that is?

I'd like to hear how the president and congress would answer those questions.

3 When I asked for a little pick-me-up, I wasn't thinking of a rope and a chair under a ceiling beam. I figure there are three factors here (at least). First, there's a lot of false propaganda about us. Secondly, there are a lot of things that America does that the people don't approve of (quite angrily if ineffectually sometimes). Thirdly, a significant number of people are just determined to be pricks as much as they can get away with. That last one doesn't have a "side."

6 Hey, Argentina hates us! Maybe it's because they're all Nazis. Pakistan and Turkey are kind of obvious. Spain seems a little bipolar. I knew about Africa but it's surprisingly consistent. Mostly it's because I think most reasonable people avoid polls.

11 Here's my theory:

Back in the Golden Age of Movies there was a studio system that was to a large extent run by immigrant Jews like Sam Goldwyn.  They thought America was a much better place than Tsarist Russia where pogroms were always a distinct possibility and they imposed their preferences on the products of their studios.  American movies were seen all over the world and the attitude of most people in the world was generally positive towards the United States.

Then when the old time moguls died and some time after that the Hollywood studio system collapsed, the blackballed America hating communists came back and were able to thrive in the new chaotic movie making system.  They hated America and made movies reflecting that attitude.  These movies are still seen all over the world and people pick up their attitude towards the United States from that.

People like Roger Simon say that conservatives should move to Hollywood and try to get their message out there.  I just don't see it.  For one thing that would be a multi generation project and for another the leftists who run the place will do everything within their enormous power to prevent it.

I think that the better approach would be to treat Hollywood as the enemy and to devastate it by attacking its revenue stream.  Change the intellectual property laws.  First off, make it impossible to sue or prosecute people for downloading movies or music.  This would be extremely politically popular.  Second "rationalize" intellectual property law so that copyright protection lasts exactly as long as patent protection i.e. 20 years.  That means that every movie and music recording from before April 1993 would now be in the public domain.

But, what would we watch?  Well there are plenty of people putting out stuff on Youtube that is actually not that bad.  Then there are all those British cop shows and comedies on Netflix.  And Bollywood cranks out enormous quantities of stuff.  The nice thing about importing entertainment product from foreigners is that even if they are slipping in snide put downs of their local conservative politicians, I have no idea who those people are so it doesn't bother me.

13 You think the elites here love us, or the American ideal? These samplings are always biased towards the educated "elite", the ones who would lose their position of privilege in a free society (or one would hope). So the results shouldn't surprise you. This crap is produced all the time on university campuses, want an opinion on the state of affairs in a region - lets ask the students from the region. You know the 99%ers who get to go to school in the US. Extrapolate that to State swilling martinis with the swells and wonder why we get surprised by every populist junta that sweeps to power and executes the elites we had brunch with Sunday last, the horror.

14 Good morning! Most people here in Eastern Europe still admire and aspire to be like the US. I have met a few who admitted that they do not like Americans. No details from them, but in airports I regularly see the "Ugly American" tourists fulfulling the stereotype. LOUD, overconfident, demanding, insistent on speaking only English in another country, not willing to even learn a little bit of the native tongue, etc. Still, people here are always looking the US for leadership to overcome international crises. I fear that Obama's economic and military dithering will cause them to turn away from America's role as the "City on a Hill".

18 American Democracy:
Do you like or dislike American ideas about democracy?
---
I reject the premise. Needs to be restated as: Do you like or dislike Americans level of God Given, Constitutionally Endorsed, Freedoms and Rights to Private Property?

I personally hate our current 'democracy' because it is supposed to be a Representative Republic. It has devolved from RR to democracy and now down to thug-a-cracy. Still the best deal on Earth, though.

24 My persuasive speech for speech class:

Fifteen million.   That was the estimated number of illegal immigrants in this country as stated by the US Border Patrol in 2006.   In 2004, the New York Times reported that nearly 2,000 people died trying to cross our border in the six years prior.

These numbers are unique to the United States.   No other country reports numbers like these, not that I have been able to find.

Why?  What does the United States have to offer that would compel a person to risk their life to get here?  What is it that America offers that no other country does?

In his speech to the Republic National Convention in 1984, Ronald Reagan said “that no one can be denied the promise that is America.”  In his first inaugural address, President Reagan called our nation “a beacon of hope for those who do not now have freedom.”

Today, I will explain how calling our country a democracy threatens that beacon of hope.   IÂ’ll do so by quoting from a video that explains the terms democracy and republic.  Then, I will share the words of Paul Harvey and Andrew Breitbart in regards to how mislabeling something changes our attitude and eventually our behavior.   I will conclude with a plea to compel you to a simple action that defends our republic.

First, the explanation of the terms.  In the John Birch SocietyÂ’s video What is AmericaÂ’s True Form of Government?, we can hear these words about a democracy as a form of government:

The word “democracy” comes from two Greek words:  Demos, meaning people, and Kratein, meaning to rule.  Democracy, therefore, means the rule of the people, MAJORITY RULE.  This, of course, sounds good, but suppose the majority decides to take away oneÂ’s home, or business, or children? Obviously, there has to be a limit.  The flaw in democracy is that the majority isnÂ’t restrained.  If more than half the people can be persuaded to want something in a democracy, they rule.

That hardly sounds like something worth risking oneÂ’s life over.

In the same video, we hear these words about a republic as a form of government:

What about republic?  Well, that comes from the Latin:  Res meaning thing and Publica meaning public.  It means the public thing, THE LAW.  A true republic is one where the government is limited by law leaving the people alone.

Leaving the people aloneÂ…to worship as they want, to live as they want, to do as they want.   Would an oppressed person risk his or her life so they can do as they want?  Would they seek a better life for their children so their children can live as they want?  I think so.  I think I would.

I realize that there is a generational gap between us.   With the exception of our instructor, all of you are closer to my sonÂ’s age than mine.   When I was your age, it was not on my radar to care about such matters of which I speak today.   I ask that you consider this:  if we lose our freedoms in America, where would be our beacon of hope?

Now, I want to tell you about Paul HarveyÂ’s essay, If I Were the Devil.  In 1964, Mr. Harvey published his essay about what he would do to destroy the American way of life.  He tells of how he would convince us that the opposite is true of most everything in which we put our faith:  the Bible is a myth, that man created God, what is bad is good, and what is good is “square”.   In other words, change the labels.  His essay continues in such a way that it is obvious we have cemented in our society today so many things he warned us about 50 years ago.

HereÂ’s another example of mislabeling.  Andrew Breitbart traces the story of how communism came to America in his 2011 best-seller Righteous Indignation.  He states that our enemies long ago concluded that destroying America would involve control of the culture — which includes influencing movies, music, and the arts.

In his book, Andrew identifies the socialists from the Frankfurt School and traces them, as well as their careers, their establishment in our nationÂ’s academia, how they incorporated their changes into our curriculum, and how those changes from 75 years ago still affect us today.  The goal was to change behavior, and they did it by changing the labels, such as convincing people that being patriotic was part of the problem.

I personally believe the phrase, “Never discuss religion and politics!” came from this movement.  What better way to weaken our social fabric than make taboo those topics that strengthen our bounds?

Changing our culture was the means to the destruction of our way of life, to get the society to change their way of thinking and eventually their behavior.  To that end, if we call our government a democracy, eventually the culture will treat it as such, and our republic will be lost.

This brings me to my conclusion.  IÂ’ve explained how the idea that our countryÂ’s form of government is a republic, and IÂ’ve explained how calling it something else could lead to the loss of that republic.  You can choose to make a difference by simply correcting anyone who says our government is anything but a republic.  I am not asking you to be combative or confrontational about it.  Simply refer to our national government as a republic and speak up when you hear someone say otherwise.

31 I think tfg slipped when he said "tragedy". He was thinking that it was a tragedy for his presidency that, just as he is about to ram amnesty and gun control down our throats he has to be distracted by more "bumps in the road" I have known narcissists personally, and everything in the world is viewed through the affect on them. I have found this type of word misuse as a good indicator of the personality type.
