Yea, its Monday again, which sucks. This will help. [Purp]

In other news, the EU plans to fine Microsoft $700M dollars because European users are apparently too stupid to figure out they can download other browsers for free. Porn and bootleg software? Mad skilz baby, mad skilz. Browsers? Not so much...huh? what? where am I? what is this thing, why does it beep? Help, I've fallen down and can't get up.

The fine works out to around $50 for each machine in violation that was shipped by OEM's. The EU says they're cutting Microsoft a bargain cuz they could have been fined $7B, or $500/machine. Either way, its a pretty harsh shakedown caused by Euro-users (apparently) being lemming like incompetent imbeciles who are unaware other stuff exists. Its truly a wonder they manage to find the power switch...or maybe the EU sends out specially trained techs to turn on computers for people?

14 I wonder if the tourism pages for France and Italy have little pop ups saying: "Have you considered going to Spain instead?"

I'm sure the Peugeot dealers aren't required to ask you if you'd rather be driving a Skoda or an Audi.

Not really. The EU needs more money, so they're looking around for it. They felt MS had too much of it, so they just had to find an excuse to get it. It's a shakedown caused by an ever increasing need for more of OPM, and some kind of "Protecting People" reason sounds better than "You got money, and us wants it"

19 They may be too stupid to download new browsers, but the can still buy a 32-ounce drink.  They are clearly smarter than NYC.

20 First day back to work after Daylight Savings Time change. Not sure if it's urban legend or not but it's supposed to be the day of huge uptick in auto accidents. So have an extra cup of coffee or two before climbing behind the wheel this morning and remember one in seven motorists doesn't have auto insurance, per Farmers Insurance commercial. Guess we need ObamaAutoCare.

21 I'm thinking any excuse these EU assholes can use to grab some cash to keep afloat just one more day; they're jumping at it. Of course, 90% will be siphoned off by bureaucrats to reward their lackeys. And themselves.

23 I'm still working on my liberal arts degree from education connection. Posted by: Shannen Doherty at March 11, 2013 06:13 AM I'm still working on my diabeetis. If you qualify for Medicare, you may be eligible to have diabeetis testin supplies shipped direct to your door. That way, you don't have to get dressed, get in your car, drive all the way to the store, wait in line and deal with people. If there's anything I hate more than high blood sugar, it's dealing with other people. Liberty Medical can help you live a better life.

Only if it's beer, and even then only in certain regions. You want a Coke in a restaurant it's 0.3L (skip the Coke, have a Spezi) or a 0.5L bottle.

Deutschfreund has occasionally expressed horror at the "small" soda here being 22oz, even after I point out that there's always so much ice in it you're actually getting less than 0.3L of soda.  "Who could drink a liter of soda?"  Americans, that's who.

Although what really makes us the best country on earth is restaurants that bring a whole pot of coffee to your breakfast table so you don't have to wait for your free second cup and third cups.

30 So there are no programming geeks in the EU or within Microsoft that can provide simple ways to disable or remove IE? I think I'm starting to understand why we bail them out every few decades.

33 Resist long enough and there won't be a European Community left, you might say, but its pretty predictable that the tax, fine and other extortionate efforts will survive even the end of the EC.

34 fuck microsoft.  they agreed to do something because they were a fucking monopoly.  they didn't do it.  they got fined.  so what?

Posted by: Dogstar at March 11, 2013 07:18 AM (2MnmS)

35 They've taken MS for over a billion now. Cut em off. Let them suck on Linux or let Apple rip THEM off for a while.

Posted by: Max Entropy at March 11, 2013 08:53 AM (mWNod)

36 Dogstar: bullshit. No government agency forces people to only use Windows.

The proper course for microsoft is to move to cloudware for Europe, and to sell licenses to European businesses and individuals from the US over the internet.

Allow anyone to load a bootstrap OS on new PCs ... one that can only log into Redmond, and purchase permission to run cloud-Windows.

Simply end boxed software sales ... let a user order a recovery disk from the US if they didn't make one themselves before they crashed their PC.

Let the EU chase users around, and just laugh at the tards in Brussels.

Thanks for the Kid Rock video.  First song of his I've ever heard, at least where I knew it was him.  I'm hopelessly out of date and not suffering for it a whit.  He did a bang up 20Q interview in a men's rag that shall remain nameless.  I could not believe the common sense emitting from a man/child wearing a porkpie hat.  He refused to slam the Bush cabinet since words to the effect, "Have you seen their educational backgrounds and track records.  One thing I know and that's they're all smarter than I."  I need to buy some of his music in gratitude.  Guess I should get on that.

Plus, Kristopr, exactly.  Some monopoly.  Even here, I'm starting to run into problems with applications that actually do not run on Explorer.

Posted by: Mazzuchelli at March 11, 2013 09:53 AM (piR98)

38 Microsoft's entire business model is based on lemming-like users using teh supplied Microsoft app rather than getting something that doesn't suck, but may have issues because of all of Microsoft's sucky things that those other apps have to interact with.

I wish the EU had nailed them for $7 billion.  No, I wish they'd destroyed the SOBs.

Posted by: Greg Q at March 11, 2013 10:31 AM (4Pleu)

39 kristof or whatever- bullshit.  microsoft is a monopoly.  that is a legal fact.  they were tried and convicted and it upheld appeal all the fucking way.

they are required to offer choice of internet browsers.  and i don't fucking feel like covering for them if they don't want to comply with the fucking law.

they caused this situation.  they forced the decision.  fuck them.

Posted by: Dogstar at March 11, 2013 12:10 PM (2MnmS)

40 and fuck this formatting crap.

Posted by: Dogstar at March 11, 2013 12:11 PM (2MnmS)

41 Microsoft should just ship their OS without IE. Then include a link to buy IE for 1the euro on the desktop. Then sue the crap out of any OS that includes ANY browser.
