In other news, the EU plans to fine Microsoft $700M dollars because European users are apparently too stupid to figure out they can download other browsers for free. Porn and bootleg software? Mad skilz baby, mad skilz. Browsers? Not so much...huh? what? where am I? what is this thing, why does it beep? Help, I've fallen down and can't get up.
The fine works out to around $50 for each machine in violation that was shipped by OEM's. The EU says they're cutting Microsoft a bargain cuz they could have been fined $7B, or $500/machine. Either way, its a pretty harsh shakedown caused by Euro-users (apparently) being lemming like incompetent imbeciles who are unaware other stuff exists. Its truly a wonder they manage to find the power switch...or maybe the EU sends out specially trained techs to turn on computers for people?

I'm sure the Peugeot dealers aren't required to ask you if you'd rather be driving a Skoda or an Audi.

Not really. The EU needs more money, so they're looking around for it. They felt MS had too much of it, so they just had to find an excuse to get it. It's a shakedown caused by an ever increasing need for more of OPM, and some kind of "Protecting People" reason sounds better than "You got money, and us wants it"

On an aside, I am struggling this day to overcome my government induced jet lag. Happy DayLight Savings Times!

Only if it's beer, and even then only in certain regions. You want a Coke in a restaurant it's 0.3L (skip the Coke, have a Spezi) or a 0.5L bottle.
Deutschfreund has occasionally expressed horror at the "small" soda here being 22oz, even after I point out that there's always so much ice in it you're actually getting less than 0.3L of soda. "Who could drink a liter of soda?" Americans, that's who.
Although what really makes us the best country on earth is restaurants that bring a whole pot of coffee to your breakfast table so you don't have to wait for your free second cup and third cups.

The proper course for microsoft is to move to cloudware for Europe, and to sell licenses to European businesses and individuals from the US over the internet.
Allow anyone to load a bootstrap OS on new PCs ... one that can only log into Redmond, and purchase permission to run cloud-Windows.
Simply end boxed software sales ... let a user order a recovery disk from the US if they didn't make one themselves before they crashed their PC.
Let the EU chase users around, and just laugh at the tards in Brussels.

Thanks for the Kid Rock video. First song of his I've ever heard, at least where I knew it was him. I'm hopelessly out of date and not suffering for it a whit. He did a bang up 20Q interview in a men's rag that shall remain nameless. I could not believe the common sense emitting from a man/child wearing a porkpie hat. He refused to slam the Bush cabinet since words to the effect, "Have you seen their educational backgrounds and track records. One thing I know and that's they're all smarter than I." I need to buy some of his music in gratitude. Guess I should get on that.
Plus, Kristopr, exactly. Some monopoly. Even here, I'm starting to run into problems with applications that actually do not run on Explorer.

I wish the EU had nailed them for $7 billion. No, I wish they'd destroyed the SOBs.
