Yet Another Lone Wolf Dies in Confrontation with Law Enforcement
— Ace

Gabe mentioned this account in his morning post. It's still pretty mysterious.

From CBS News:

A man named Ibragim Todashev had been a friend of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, possibly due to their joint interest in martial arts and murdering civilians.

An FBI agent and two Massachusetts state troopers went to his apartment to interview him. At some point, he went crazy For Reasons We Will Never Understand, and advanced with a knife on the FBI agent. The agent sustained minor injuries, and Todashev was shot dead.

Remember that story that Tamerlan was suspected of having a connection to a triple homicide of his friend? This Todaschev may have been connected to that.

Officials told NBC News that investigators did not believe Todashev played any role in the bomb attack, but were questioning him in connection with a 2011 triple homicide in Waltham, Massachusetts, in which Tamerlan Tsarnaev also may have been a suspect.

A few days ago Mary Katherine Ham wrote this wonderfully sarcastic headline:

Note Found In Boat Points to Mystifying Motive We May Never Truly Understand

“Basically the note says that he does not mourn his brother Tamerlan, that Tamerlan was a martyr now and that he was in paradise, that Dzhokhar expected to join him there soon,” Miller said. “That the bombings were in retribution for the US crimes against Muslims in places like Iraq and Afghanistan; that the victims of the Boston bombing were ‘collateral damage,’ the same way innocent victims have been collateral damage in US wars around the world, summing up that when you attack one Muslim, you attack all Muslims.”

Per MKH, the NYT deigned to report this, albeit as an incidental fact mentioned deep in an article about another topic entirely. That story concerns the FBI's interest in another Tsarnave pal, Musa Khadzhimuratov, who, based on the first name, I'm guessing is the mysterious "Mischa" we previously heard might have been influencing the brothers towards the path of jihad.

“We talked about family, not religion or politics,” he said. He said he had no inkling that Mr. Tsarnaev had driven several times from his home in Cambridge, Mass., to New Hampshire to buy fireworks for the explosive powder used in the bombs or to shoot at a firearms range in Manchester — let alone that he would attack the marathon.

I've highlighted the part I think is less than credible.

that the victims of the Boston bombing were ‘collateral damage,’ the same way innocent victims have been collateral damage in US wars around the world,

This is the bit that mystifies me.

"Collateral damage,"   as I understand it, is another way of saying "unintended victims," at least in the case of human casualties.  If the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings were "collateral damage," then just who or what the hell were the Brothers Tsarnaev trying to    blow up?     Because if   they just wanted to make a statement, they could have done that somewhere that wasn't crowded with men, women and children who were     absolutely    going to be wounded or killed    by the explosions.

They were not "collateral damage."   They were clearly the targets    of the Brothers   Tsarnaev from the start.   The Schnoz needs to get schooled.

The FBI still only has 100 employees who speak Middle Eastern languages, the same number as prior to 9/11/01. Fundamentally, a couple points follow below. Though it feigns that it doesn't, the FBI uses mass murderers as informants even while the murders go on under the FBI's nose, utilizing the information that the FBI provides the serial killer informant. Also, the FBI will latch onto a harmless but disgruntled Muslim and lead that boob into a terrorist act, providing the boob with the weapon and information where to use that weapon of mass destruction (a grenade, for instance). Then, hurrah, "success headline" and career promotion while the real terrorists go unchecked, despite the obvious terrorist websites owned by the "real" terrorists, ignored by the FBI, despite official word from foreign intelligence to the FBI requesting cooperation to keep an eye on the named Boston terrorists, for another example. Prior to GWB Patriot Act, Reagan designated responsibility for terror prevention on the FBI that really functions better at solving crimes after the fact, not in prevention. And for whatever reason, regarding terrorism, the FBI failed to intelligently prevent attacks, being predisposed and distracted with their previously selected mafia Public Enemy #1 for instance, despite evidence and information on the activities of the 9/11 terrorists, which properly analyzed and UTILIZED, would prevent the first and second World Trade Center bombing and airline-as-missile attacks, and the same application of information utilized would have caught the Boston Marathon bombers before the bombings. Hear him out. He gives credit to the local police who utilized CSI techniques to catch the terrorists. And though I think there'd be problems handing national domestic anti-terrorism security responsibility to the Secret Service (let's parteeeeee, hook-up, hickup), that's where Peter Lance would place that job of preventing domestic terrorism. If interested, here's the end from his Amazon bio, quoted. Peter Lance ... Following the 9/11 attacks Lance began investigating the origins of the FBI's original probe of World Trade Center bomber Ramzi Ahmed Yousef. After visiting Yousef's former bomb factory in the Philippines, he came away with 100's of pages of classified documents proving that Yousef had set the 9/11 plot into motion as early as 1994. Lance then went back and examined the FBI's original efforts to stop Yousef in 1992 as he built the first WTC device. The result is his acclaimed investigative book from Harper Collins 1000 YEARS FOR REVENGE. Lance followed that book with COVER UP in 2004. In it he established evidence that federal officials entered into an "ends/means" decision in 1996 that buried a treasure trove of al Qaeda-related intelligence in order to preserve a series of Mafia-related cases in the Eastern District of New York (Brooklyn). Lance presented probative evidence in the book that a senior Organized Crime Supervisory Special Agent in the FBI's New York Office (NYO) may have been in a corrupt relationship with a Colombo Family killer. It was the FBI's desire to prevent this potential scandal from tanking the mob cases, that led, Lance determined, to the al Qaeda evidence suppression. A year after COVER UP's publication the Brooklyn D.A. commenced a grant jury investigation inspired, in part, by Lance's revelations about the Supervisory Special Agent: R. Lindley DeVecchio. On March 30th, 2006 DeVecchio was indicted on four counts of second degree murder stemming from that D.A.'s investigation. In TRIPLE CROSS, the final book in Lance's 9/11 investigative trilogy, he provides stunning evidence that senior FBI and Justice Dept. officials may have obstructed justice in their failure to monitor Ali A Mohamed, Osama bin Laden's principal spy inside the United. States. In April, 2010 Lance was appointed Research Scholar at the Orfalea Center for Global and International Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Lance's profile of former FBI undercover asset Emad Salem, "The Spy Who Came In For The Heat," was the lead non-fiction article in PLAYBOY's September, 2010 issue. "The Private War of Anthony Shaffer," Lance's investigation surrounding the Pentagon's censorship of "Operation Dark Heart," was the lead nonfiction piece in PLAYBOY's January, 2011 issue. On April 4th, 2013 a new Kindle edition of Lance's first novel "First Degree Burn" was published on amazon.com. The trade paperback will be available on April 10th. His fourth book for HarperCollins, DEAL WITH THE DEVIL, the epic story of the FBI's 30 year relationship with a Mafia killer will be published on July 2nd 2013.
