"You Make a Great Point There:" MSNBC Has Unexpected Take on Coverage of Obama's Funeral Selfie
— Ace

Three guesses.

Did you say "sexist" or "racist"?

Well either way, you're right: It's both.

The first woman to offer this assessment -- that the discussion is "racist" and "sexist" -- is identified by Mediaite as being an MSNBC reporter. Not one of their many, many, many opinion-spewing talking heads, but a reporter.

So at MSNBC, even the "reporters" are quick to report racist attacks on Obama.

They are literally claiming that you cannot criticize Obama or Michele at all, or else you're racist. (If it's Michele, you're racist and sexist too.)

I would like people to start reversing the question on these people. I'd like them to start being asked, "What criticism, if any, of Obama would you consider fair?" Force them to give us a list of criticisms we are allowed to lodge at the SCOAMFOTUS, or else make them confess that they deem all criticism racist and out of bounds.

Make them say it. Make them own their absurdity.

@johnekdahl noted that after Obama yucked it up with the comely Danish PM, and after Michele had seemed to stare daggers at the pair, Michele and Obama changed seats, so that Michelle now sat between the Danish PM and Obama. As if she wanted to separate them.

And for that observation, he was called racist and sexist in the Guardian.

He was also identified as being "the media." But whatever.

It's just too ridiculous. They literally have nothing else to say-- no defense of Obama's myriad failures, no real argument that he's achieved anything at all. From here on out, it's just racism, sexism, and racism forever.

Tangentially Related: Some people made parody "SomeECards" -- "SomeDCards," expressing progressive ideas.

They're pretty funny.

17 Just the fundamental lack of respect. It's not a F*cking Irish Wake, dumbass. It's a funeral. It's a somber time to remember the mortality of man, and honor the life and works, and fundamental humanity of those passed, knowing that those that loved them are grieving. It's closure to a life, with the glimmer of hope of what is to come. Obama couldn't stop being *look at me!!!!* *yuk*yuk*yuk* for one day to be somber and serious and truly honor another man. Even one so great as Mandela. He is a child. Period.

26 There's a slight misconception here, I think. I'm not sure they actually expect you to shut up because of the ridiculous accusation, though that certainly seems to work in DC. I think the primary goal is to reinforce "tribal stereotypes" among the left and the MFM (but I repeat myself), and ensure "their tribe" does not listen to you, consider what you say, or see any ideas outside the "tribe." I spent some time around someone recently (not much thankfully) who was perfectly normal and pleasant until they got themselves on one of their "tribal" political issues, at which point their voice went up an octave, twenty decibels, and the insults started flying, without pause. There is no effort to convince or discuss or learn, just to drown out and drive away. It's really sadly atavistic behavior.

33 "It's a funeral. It's a somber time to remember the mortality of man"

Say, anyone else remember when Dick Cheney was dispatched to an Auschwitz commemoration during the bleak wintertime, and packed badly, and showed up dressed in ludicrously inappropriate clothing, including a gaudy ski cap with a staff retreat logo plastered across it?

The left engaged in a huge collective harrumph of contempt and said that it showed just how shallow and tone-deaf the right are, to have behaved in such a callow manner at a sober, restrained memorial service.

Today? With Obama engaging in similarly grossly inappropriate and vulgar behavior at a state funeral? The critical response from the left is *crickets*.

That's a *black* stereotype now? Watch the old Dick van Dyke show on Netflix. Mary Tyler Moore would get jealous of a woman sharing an elevator with her husband.

I read that the reason why he wore that is because it was the warmest outfit he had.  This took place shortly after one of his open heart surgeries and people who have had heart problems like Cheney did had to be careful in extremely cold environments.  No one is expecting an old man with a history of heart trouble to be toughing it out with just a pea coat when it's zero degrees out.

Ah, is she?   I had no idea who the hell she was.  I'm glad to see that my opinion of her column was justified,  namely that it was damned silly.

I mean, this:

The president of the United States, leader of the free world, standard-bearer for everything upright, good and wholesome about the nation he leads, lost his morality, his dignity and his mind, using the solemn occasion of Nelson MandelaÂ’s memorial service Tuesday to act like a hormone-ravaged frat boy on a road trip to a strip bar.

In other words, he acted like Bill Clinton. Right? I mean, except for the fact that he was acting like a hormone-ravaged frat boy at a solemn memorial service, nothing about this description would be out of place in describing Bubba getting beejers in the Oval Office and raping women in trailer parks. The NOW crowd didn't seem to care much then, so I don't know why they'd care this time around. Sounds racist to me.

Any way, my point is this: you and I might find Obammy's behavior appalling, but the average LIV probably couldn't care less.    And     upper middle class white   women     sniffing about Obammy's   "inappropriate"    horndog    behavior while giving Bill    Clinton a pass is    racism, straight up.

If I've got heart trouble, and I need to stay warm, and my warmest clothes are ones that aren't appropriate for a somber memorial service, and I'm scheduled for just such a memorial service outdoors in the winter, I have two sensible options:

(a) Beg off on health grounds and send someone else, or

(b) Call my haberdasher and line up some warm, appropriate clothes.

Cheney just said (c), "Ah, fuck it," which was a bad call.

181 We don't claim that any and all criticism of President Obama is racist, wingnuts.

Why, just the other day I mused that President Obama can sometimes be just too sexy, smart and awe inspiring for his own good.  That he occasionally struggles to lower himself to the intellectual plane that the rest of us inhabit.

I wouldn't suggest a Republican is being racist for making a similar such critical observation.  The fact that you aren't though- might it be motivated by latent racist tendencies?

They insist that they’re not labeling it “racist” just because it differs from their opinion. So, what would proper opposition sound like? Enjoy the silence that follows.

Let's pretend that the Historic First Female POTUS Sarah Palin shows up at a huge AME church with Todd to attend the funeral of some really famous American Black person, let's make it Donna Brazile (not that I wish her ill).  Now POTUS proceeds to sit there and flirt and carry on with a really good looking foreign White dignitary to the point that Todd feels he needs to sit between Sarah and the hottie to settle things down.   How would that be received, with tut-tuts of sexism--just leave the girl alone, she was just being friendly?  Nope, they would be calling for her resignation.

Posted by: no good deed at December 12, 2013 01:09 PM (HsJeN)

According to the Daily Mail, the stadium was almost half empty,  the crowd kept booing the South African President, and applauded for Winnie Mandela,  his second wife,   more than they did for Mandela's third wife.   And the sound system was appallingly bad.

While I agree that using the length of the ceremony as an excuse for bad behavior is silly, I also think it was    stupid of South Africa to make it four hours long in the first place (and then start an hour late, which   made it even longer).    Two hours is more than enough.  Anything longer than that is just    meaningless preening.   The audience doesn't care    and     the speakers aren't going to say anything new or exciting that hasn't been said already.

What if I told you it's not because those people who have the skill do the job are rare, it's because the people who have the necessary political connections to do the job are rare. What if I told you that capricious government interference in business via regulatory authority, requires a very well connected CEO? And that costs a lot of money? Yes that huge amount of money that we pay CEOs above and beyond the natural market value of someone who can run a business IS a symptom of something very wrong with American and WORLD capitalism, created by governments creating an artificial shortage of CEOs.

251 "sexist" would have been applicable were the Danish PM being described as less significant than a whoring bitch of a c2nt. Whether or not she is, since that wasn't the printed story, it isn't simply another catch-all example, using the same word to describe any perceived offender. Here's another example of shit people say that describes themselves far more clearly than the target they presumed to take down: "It just comes to a point where some people step over the line. When you criticize something and you have no idea what you're criticizing, it undermines your credibility." House Speaker John Boehner Boehner, McConnell, McCain, Graham, Hatch, etc. have lost all sensibility, as have those who benefit and enable the so-called post-constitutional era. They don't even bother reading the f2ckin' legislation they sponsor, vote and pass, except to know their pockets are augmenting in size and comprehensive content stuffed full of avarice and malicious, abusive powers, and profits at taxpayer expense, and the destruction of the American middle class. As soon as the Tea Party movement began, the establishment Washingtonian Republicans swore they'd usurp it. So what's new, Boehner?

252 If political criticism is solely a function of race and gender, then why is the very white and very male GOP leadership subject to constant criticism by the GOP base? Shouldn't they be getting the mother of all passes from criticism?

Of course, even to pose the question is to take the Left way more seriously, at least intellectually, than they deserve to be taken.

257 Representative Elijah Cummings (D., Md.) realized on the flight back from Nelson Mandela’s memorial service that the fight over Obamacare had similarities to the former South African president’s battle against apartheid, according to the Hill. He encouraged Congress to act in the spirit of Mandela and embrace a “push for reconciliation” over divisions regarding the health-care law. Way to cheapen the hell out of apartheid there buddy.

258 @252 OK, that's is not the point. Logic here: Palin white firing on white male is to Barry black firing on black female. He fired on a white female. Your comparison fails. Where the funeral was has nothing to do with the comparison.

Whats  most  interesting  to  me  about the selfie shot is that TFG is obviously so much more comfortable with the PM's of GB and Denmark than he is with any political leaders here in the U.S., even those from his own party.

He likes those Euro trash types.

261 Can anyone explain to me why the President of the United States, the Prime Minister of GB, and the Prime Minister of Denmark found the need to take a selfie AT ALL? Like they wanted to capture the moment but couldn't imagine any other way? It didn't occur to any of them that cameras would already be trained on them, here out in the open in this worldwide event, and if any of them wanted a picture of the 3 of them together, there would be 1.5 billion versions to choose from instantaneously?  It's not 1986, where one person takes a group picture with the 110 and everyone starts yelling, "Get two and send me a copy."

I don't know that King Putt was exactly flirting with her, but my take is more that Worf was pissed with him for acting like a jackass at a funeral.  Her body language while they were taking the selfie says it all-- she wasn't leaning towards or even looking at them.  She was totally closed off. (Not that I blame her.)

The series of pictures of them in the Brit newspaper, from the first smiles to him in a different seat and looking pouty, is priceless.

Exactly.  She's his beard, she knows about Reggie, and they'll quietly file the divorce papers she drew up in 2007 at some future point when he's out of office.

What If I told you the Pope's right? What if I told you the reason wages for CEOs is so high is because the people that can do the job is so rare.

271 (Reuters) - U.S. wireless carriers will make it easier for consumers to "unlock" their mobile phones for use on a competitor's network, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Tom Wheeler said on Thursday.

Wheeler told members of Congress an agreement was reached between the carriers and the agency, and details will be presented at an FCC meeting later on Thursday.

Industry sources have said the agreement would ensure that providers notify customers about the eligibility of their phones for unlocking - by text message, for example - and could also cover some pre-paid phones.

The deal would also require carriers to process or deny unlocking requests within two business days, according to FCC's earlier guidance.

U.S. wireless carriers often "lock" smartphones to their networks as a way to encourage consumers to renew their mobile contracts. Consumers often get new devices at a heavily subsidized price in return for committing to longer contracts.

The new deal would assure consumers that they could get their phones "unlocked" at the end of their contract and make the process more uniform among carriers.

You can always count on an overseas adventure for Preznit Pretender to entertain, from dress to decorum. Please see his toast to Queen Elizabeth if you ever need to laugh (I have it bookmarked) and she tells his self to "stand down." Between that and his Beast of a car (not Mooch, although she may have provided some added weight) getting stuck on a speed bump in Ireland, well, I was happy to read about that trip.

If an aide said, "Mr. President, it is tradition and etiquette to be somber and solemn at funerals. You are expected not to giggle and pose for selfies," Jug-Ears would pause in his nerf basketball game, standing with grody fungal feet on the Resolute Desk, to ask, "Who is Eti and why did she quit?" ***fist bump***
