Yule Log Christmas Open Thread
— Ace

One Christmas morn, after finishing off a dispiriting bowl of Kaboom, I opened my presents, which consisted of a shovel and gravedigger's overalls. My pappy thought it was important that I learn a trade. And the family trade was thieving from the newly dead.

And then I watched the Ghetto Fireplace on television, and dreamt of a world in which I would have a pretty golden watch that didn't come off the wrist of a dead man. A world of kindness and decency and wonder.

An Apple Jacks world, if you will.

17 Ace, this explaiins so much. To add to the misery I must post the worst gift I ever gave. It was a fake lottery ticket, to my mother. Silly me, I wnet on the last minute "what else can I waste my money on?" Christmas spree. I found the spoler at Spencers. I must have been stoned. I thought, "hey, Mom loves the lotter, and I would llike to see her win!" I decided to stuff it into her stocking, so she would receive my Christmas surprise at the end. I was young, and stupid. She won $40,000 for about 10 minutes. Even my brothers were in near tears. Everyone was screaming and happy and hugging. I shrunk in my chair. I did not know how to tell them how badly I had fucked up. Needless to say, I kind of ruined that Christmas. And although my family never forgave me forme for that moronic mistake, I will never forget the joy that they had, (that they obviously have forgotten!) upon learning the reality of the matter. I guess what I'm sayin' is, I feel ya man! And remember, stuff is not only not important in the afterlife, it ain't too important now. At least, extra stuff.

19 I didn't think I was racist, but then I thought the Steve Martin tweet was the funniest thing I had heard since I heard Dave Chappell talking about the ghetto baby selling crack out of his diaper or Chris Rock talking about "run" if you find yourself on MLK st/rd/blvd. Then I was informed that the Steve Martin tweet was indeed racist and I denounced myself.

Merry Christmas.

I'm curious of any of you have built a wesbite for your small business and what builder/host you recommend. I've done a lot of work on Wix but now realize I'd like a blog and they don't offer this feature. Their site was easy to use but there are others like Ipage and webcom, etc. that might be as easy. I don't care for go daddy (they don't offer blogs either) and wordpress is beyond my comprehension. I'd like a site that would enable to build and host from same service. My needs are small and simple -- a one-person service business, probably five pages, no merchandise, lots of videos, and the blog.

Thanks for any recommendations.

Have you posted the quote from TownhallÂ’s Best Quotes of 2013? I put link here on Sunday. ItÂ’s the first site I look at every day and usually the last. I also appreciate the Horde and their prayers and thoughts when we need them. And they usually entertaining posts. I love all of my internet friends & wish all a Merry Christmas. I hope 2014 is better than this year, at least for my family. I hope that TFG continues to tank in the polls. I know itÂ’s not very Christian of me, but I have my doubts that he is a Christian.

145 On more than one occasion, I took my patrol boat into Cambodia.

In fact, I remember spending Christmas Day of 1968 five miles across the Cambodian border. It was a dark and stormy night as we wove our way up the Mekong Delta. Navigating the shoals of our fears, that daynight is seared, seared into my memory, and all of those memories are now baked into my psyche, and the Congressional record.

It was the night MaryJane met WillyPete.

157 I like documentaries. But there is something about me that decides to watch the most depressing docs or shows every holiday. Examples: Shoah, S21, Six Feet Under, Rwanda, etc. I swore I wd stop doing it. But yesterday, I found The Chekist on YouTube. It's a documdrama about the Cheka (KGB). I get where they were coming from regarding showing all these executions, but sheesh! I think I saw about 500 people shot in groups of 5. Lots of naked people if you are into that sort of thing (and there are people on the internet who are into naked dead people). After they were shot in this basement they were hauled up by their ankles and onto a truck. I can't believe the actors allowed themselves to be treated that way. Anyway, I don't think I want to see naked people for a while now.

206 Some of Felix's atrocities: At these times, there were numerous reports that Cheka interrogators utilized torture methods which were matched only by the Spanish Inquisition. At Odessa the Cheka tied officers to planks and slowly fed them into furnaces or tanks of boiling water; In Kharkiv, scalpings and hand-flayings were commonplace: the skin was peeled off victims' hands to produce "gloves"; The Voronezh Cheka rolled naked people around in barrels studded internally with nails; victims were crucified or stoned to death at Dnipropetrovsk; the Cheka at Kremenchuk impaled members of the clergy and buried alive rebelling peasants; in Orel, water was poured on naked prisoners bound in the winter streets until they became living ice statues; in Kiev, Chinese Cheka detachments placed rats in iron tubes sealed at one end with wire netting and the other placed against the body of a prisoner, with the tubes being heated until the rats gnawed through the victim's body in an effort to escape. Fuckin A, furnaces, flesh gloves and living ice statutes?! Gnawings rats?! And these days the left has the nerve to call deprivation of a Koran or denial of access to a lawyer torture?

209 The Guardian article (linked at blazing cat far) by the atheist who has come to appreciate people of faith was interesting. Here's what he says about Richard Dawkins: "I also see Richard Dawkins differently. I see him as a grown up version of that 16-year-old kid, proud of being smart, unable to understand why anyone would believe or think differently from himself. I see a person so removed from humanity and so removed from the ambiguity of life that he finds himself judging those who think differently. I see someone doing what he claims to hate in others. Preaching from a selfish vantage point."

230 Ronald Reagan: Christmas Message — Dec 24, 1981 "Nancy and I are very happy to send our warmest greetings and best wishes to all those who are celebrating Christmas. We join with Americans everywhere in recognizing the sense of renewed hope and comfort this joyous season brings to our nation and the world. The Nativity story of nearly twenty centuries ago is known by all faiths as a hymn to the brotherhood of man. For Christians, it is the fulfillment of age-old prophecies and the reaffirmation of God’s great love for all of us. Through a generous Heavenly Father’s gift of His Son, hope and compassion entered a world weary with fear and despair and changed it for all time. On Christmas, we celebrate the birth of Christ with prayer, feasting, and great merriment. But, most of all, we experience it in our hearts. For, more than just a day, Christmas is a state of mind. It is found throughout the year whenever faith overcomes doubt, hope conquers despair, and love triumphs over hate. It is present when men of any creed bring love and understanding to the hearts of their fellow man. The feeling is seen in the wondrous faces of children and in the hopeful eyes of the aged. It overflows the hearts of cheerful givers and the souls of the caring. And it is reflected in the brilliant colors, joyful sounds, and beauty of the winter season. Let us resolve to honor this spirit of Christmas and strive to keep it throughout the year. Nancy and I ask you to join us in a prayer that prudence, wisdom, and understanding might descend on the people of all nations’ so that during the year ahead we may realize an ancient and wondrous dream: “peace on earth, goodwill toward men.” Let me guess: "Christian" Obama's message didn't have the grace that Reagan's did.

237 []Obama is a Christian the way Henry the Eighth was a Christian. Given Henry's belief that the reason why he had no legitimate heir was divine punishment for marrying his cousin, I think that was unfair to Henry. Crazy as it may seem, his decision to divorce Catherine was not entirely motivated by self interest. That the Pope's proposed solution was a dispensation for bigamy and marriage to Ann w/o a divorce from Catherine didn't help much.

241 Something about Christmas music in films...

I dunno how many of you have seen the film "A Midnight Clear".

Essentially, a group of Army scouts are caught behind the lines during the Battle of the Bulge, trying to make their way back to US  forces. Not an uplifting film, but at the end as the credits roll Sam Philips sings a stanza of "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear" that is a killer, and fits in totally with the ending of the film.

Other Christmas music, sort of, is in the film "The Rapture". A group of women are being held in a cell, while apparently the Superbowl is being played on the TV next to them. Suddenly, static hits the TV, changing to a horseman galloping. Then an earthquake hits the jail, and the bars start falling down. As a number of women scream and huddle down, one of them, in a beautiful voice, starts singing "Hark the Herald, Angels Sing."

It's weird, but it fits the scene amazingly well.

246 My father's military service ended over fifteen years before my birth and never had any influence over where any of his children were raised. My parents grew up mostly in Providence, RI but my brothers and me, the three youngest of the five kids, all were born and raised in SoCal. I don't seem to have anything they tested for that narrows it down more than a fairly vast range, never mind the possible east coast locations it also suggested that were also a pretty broad zone.

It may be that I was a voracious reader from an early age and had a lot of influence that wasn't tied to the geography.

Thanks for any recommendations

And a merry fuck you too, Timothy. With a rusty pineapple. Sideways. At least you'll have an excuse for walking funny.

If the usb drive is 7 years old, junk it (physically destroy it if the file is sensitive) and get a newer one with many more GB of storage.

295 270 I really hope Ace gets a puppy simply because of the wealth of amusing puppy disaster posts it would spawn. Posted by: Y-not at December 25, 2013 06:31 PM (zDsvJ) Give an old dog. Contrary to lore, they can learn new tricks.

298 I thought I had a pretty comprehensive list of grievances about atheists, but hypocrisy's not on there. Hypocrisy actually takes quite a bit of frontal lobe functionality.

300 " When the skies are brighter canary yellow I forget ev'ry cloud I've ever seen, So they called me a cockeyed optimist Immature and incurably green." "I have heard people rant and rave and bellow That we're done and we might as well be dead, But I'm only a cockeyed optimist And I can't get it into my head." ........ "I could say life is just a bowl of Jello And appear more intelligent and smart, But I'm stuck like a dope With a thing called hope, And I can't get it out of my heart! Not this heart" Merry Christmas
