Zimmerman, Martin, and the Clash of Civilizations
— Ace

Dynamite Big Picture essay on clash of two different cultures, two different tribes, on the frontier where Elites never deign to step foot. They're deep in the Capital areas of the empire, protected from danger and insulated from the knowledge that such exists at all.

But Zimmerman had to step there, because he lived there, and while he was middle class, he was lower middle class, and had to live on the frontier. He didn't have the money to live in the gated communities and Private Security Patrol areas of the Capital.

It could be that Zimmerman reminds the actual Elites of their own good fortune, and therefore they hate him for that. In their Narrative, Zimmerman becomes the Elite who must be punished, because they damnsure aren't going to punish themselves.

Very good essay, definitely give it a read. I've gone off on my own tangent (similar but not identical to the points made in the essay), so don't think you've already read it based on my own ruminations.

8 Zimmerman scares the Elites because they realize instinctively that the vaneer of civilization is very thin, and they know they are incapable of surviving if that vaneer is ever worn through. They are comforted by the thought of layers of protection between them and the bad guys, but know that if those layers disappeared they wouldn't last two seconds.

10 One civilization is dying. The other is thriving, but will be short-lived. Irony of Ironies: The 'new' civilization' is snuffing out the 'old,' but the 'new' cannot sustain itself. So once the 'old' dies out, the new civilization will shortly follow.

28 I think we are all trying to read too much in this while gazing at navel lint.  This is really not even uncommon.  Travon was a doper and a dealer and a thief. Zimmerman was exactly what the prosecution said, a "cop want-a-be".

When he and Travon got into the altercation from what I gather it went down exactly as Zimmerman said all along.  This case is all about one thing.

When it was initially reported the names rang out in the press who failed to follow the 24 hour rule.  Man name Zimmerman shoots and kills an unarmed innocent black youth.  That was the meme complete with an old picture of him as a 14 year old.  It was another chance to practice race baiting.

By the time the facts started coming out the press had already tried the case and Florida, being Florida, decided to step in an override the local cops and do a lyching.  All because they though Zimmerman was a white of German extraction.  By the time they saw he was not they were already sunk into the shit they created up to their armpits.

The trial going on now shows that clearly.  The AG should be disbarred and prosecuted. And Zimmerman should sue the living shit out of NBC and the AG.

32 I was assuming/hoping that the "class of civilizations" discussed here would be white working class vs. black working class. Zimmerman's fear and distrust led him to stalking a guy who was just some kid, and only because he was a black kid wearing a hoodie. And that led to a confrontation and fist fight. And because Zimmerman was carrying, that garden variety fist fight ended in death. And the sad part is that lots and lots of people are very ok with all of the above.

But the case isn't about race either. It's about a struggling middle class in a precarious economy trying to hang on to what it has. And it's about a culture of dropouts from the economy who celebrate thuggery and then pretend to be the victims. It's doubtful that anyone in Zimmerman's neighborhood who weathered multiple break-ins has much sympathy for the Martin family. And that's one reason that the prosecution hasn't found any useful witnesses

I work in Eliteville. I mentioned to a co-worker that thinks he is guilty that the defense says they may wrap it up Wednesday. The coworker sucked in her breathe. Why? Perhaps  she fears the great rioting of white Hispanics and their brethren should there be a conviction. Or maybe, just maybe,  Eliteville runs a bit scared that the protective veil may be at risk for a couple of days.

A bit of a rhetorical question; the media claims they do not as a rule cover local mass murders of babies via decapitations and the like. Why the fixation on this local crime story?

That's the real story behind the headlines, the agitprop and the circus of a public trial. It's the reality that doesn't get talked about much because it's much less interesting than the straightforward story being fed into the presses. The one about an innocent young boy killed for no reason at all. It's a story about what happens when people are backed into a corner and then told to stay there. It's about a frightened middle class trying to survive. And it's about territory.

Zimmerman picked his side of the coin and Martin picked his.

46 Excellent points in that essay, particularly about the feeling of being backed into a corner. There is something dangerous in the air right now and it's going to lead to somewhere horrible. There's a growing belief that the levers of power are being used only against those who are law abiding and not against the law breakers. It most certainly appears that not popping out a kid and not being a junkie and not being functionally illiterate has resulted only in my having to work hard in order to support both myself and those who have chosen to opt out of what used to be deemed the mandates of society. This dovetails with Sara Hoyt's observation that those who are existing on government largesse do, indeed, have a job. Their job is to navigate bureaucracy and to keep the money flowing. That is not a simple matter. Is it productive work? Well, it is for them and that's what's important. I have an acquaintance in Florida who owns a nice house in a nice neighborhood right on the edge of a very nice neighborhood indeed. She and her husband have worked their fingers to the bone to make a good life for them and their kids. Guess what? She's about ready to walk away from it all. Why? Well, apparently the speculators who built the McMansions in their neighborhood and who now cannot sell them have turned to accepting Section 8 vouchers. Needless to say, this has resulted in an influx of residents who are less than keen on keeping the property in good condition and who are more than keen to pursue some possibly illicit entrepreneurial activities. Thus, they are now living in a war zone. They played by the rules. They worked hard. They moved away from the frontier. The frontier followed. Now they are the ones who are in the wrong for wanting a quiet, peaceful, safe life. After all, how desperately classist and racist to not want your children to be exposed to an open air drug market right across the street. How declasse indeed to presume that the school system is there to educate your child and not to serve as a babysitter. How gauche to believe that your child should be able to go outside to play without you worrying that s/he will be caught in drug gang crossfire in the middle of suburbia. I have no answers for this. People will protect themselves and their families. They will. That impulse may well be engraved in our DNA. Attempting to stop that will only make things uglier. The Burning Time comes. May I go quickly in the first wave.

50 This farce started out with a simple mistake from the media that a white man shot a black a youth.  An assumption was made based on Mr. Zimmerman's name and instead of correcting this mistake the media doubled down and created a whole new ethnicity.  If the media had reported the story accurately, a Hispanic man shot a black man, there would be no story, as this story does not fit any narrative of racial injustice.  At least not any narrative the media is interested in reporting.

So here we are. If the media had any shame there would be some introspection during the inevitable riots when Mr. Zimmerman gets off or if they send an innocent man to jail.   But that is not how the media rolls.  And they wonder why nobody trusts them anymore.

52 Interesting take, but I view it as little more than tribalism.  Compare what's happening here with tribal behavior in places like Afghanistan, Africa or South America and the similarities are impossible to ignore.

Member of Tribe A kills member of Tribe A:  Internal matter, sweep it under the rug internally as not to embarrass the tribe in front of others.

Member of Tribe B kills member of Tribe A:  Regardless of circumstances, this an outrageous act of aggression against our tribe.  We will add it to the list of grievances against your tribe going back hundreds of years.

If anything bad happens to Tribe A, it is to be blamed on tribe B, even if directly caused by the actions of their own tribe.

If George Zimmerman was black or Trayvon Martin white, this story never would've made it out of the local Florida news.

I think they'll just get together as the circumstances call for it, and start distributing lead at high velocity. And it won't take long before the thugs run the other way. But the true crime here is by the elites. By attempting to punish Zimmerman for the crime of defending himself, they're making the barbarians more sure of their eventual victory. So putting them down will require much more of their blood than it would if the Elites would say, "We have rules of behavior for a reason."

91 Look at the commentary on Jeantel and her "culture".  The culture being discussed is based on a malign stupidity, laziness and racism but that was a-ok with the commenters who thought it insensitive to comment on her malign stupidity, racism and laziness.  Having ginned up a racial incident, what will the media and that cretin, Obama, do to defuse it.  How many deaths are worth the black vote turn out.  Think they care?

92 81 not stroke, seizure. If she had a stoke, they would say so

As I am a certified Holiday Inn Medical Examiner I will weigh in: a seizure in an adult often means tumor. Could mean drugs, etc, but with her history of breast cancer this is what is concerning...and the news is taking awhile to arrive.

93 I tried reading this, but actually the explanation seems much simpler to me. Trayvon was "aspiring" to the gang/prison culture that seems to appeal to so many power-seeking minority youth, and Zimmerman was living the fantasy life of the Lone Ranger--much more admirable, in my view, but still problematic. I feel badly for Zimmerman, but please, if you're not really Dirty Harry don't pretend to be.

94 The whole Zimmerman was a billy badass wannabe cop is pretty much bull shit. It's been pointed out he he was actually offered more training and resources by the police and he didn't take it. That does not seem like something a wannabe cop would do.

95 I liked the part about the cops protecting themselves.  I had a conversation with a law enforcement contact who said, "You know the story that isn't being told here?  That the police took their time responding."  It was raining.  Here was "that guy" (Zimmerman) again, calling them to report another incident.  Maybe if we take our time the suspect (Martin) will evade him, sparing us the paperwork and having to get out of the cruiser.  My contact said they probably didn't step on the accelerator until the other 911 calls came in, and are probably glad the heat is where it is--rather than where it could be (on them).

97 Had Trayvon offed Zimmerman you would have never heard of this case.

98 _______________________________

Zimmerman is obviously a malevolent monster of the first degree.
First of all, he was a Neighborhood Watch Captain. That damning fact alone tells you just what kind of a beast he is.

What business does he (or anyone else) have trying to play the role that only our well-trained, trusted, government police officers should be playing? Only a brutish caveman would volunteer his time and energy to take an active role in reducing crime in his neighborhood.
Crime prevention is for cops. - Period. The rest of us just need to get out of the way, keep a low profile, mind our own business, make minimal use of public areas, and hope for the best.

But what does Zimmerman do? After spotting and reporting suspicious activity in his own neighborhood to the police, he demonstrates the raw temerity to followup such as to give the police the best possible information regarding the suspicious activities. What a heartless bastard!
Sure, recently there had been multiple break-ins and burglaries in his neighborhood. But so what!
Doesn't he know that the police are ultra-trained government professionals who care more about his neighborhood than he does?

And sure, there's absolutely no evidence that Zimmerman started the fight he had with Martin. But we all know that any monster who would dare own a firearm and volunteer his time as a Neighborhood Watch Captain is going to automatically be the instigator of any fight he gets into.
That's so obvious - you don't need evidence to know it. It's like the sun rising.

So, while this monster may not be "technically" guilty of homicide, we can ALL at least agree that we automatically know he's at least guilty of being a Dirty Harry Wannabe. I mean, he's obviously guilty of bad judgment, right? Bad judgment that led to Martin's death.- We just know it has to be true. Who needs evidence, when we just automatically know.

I mean, when this case is finished and Zimmerman is either acquitted outright or the jury is hung, we still have to be able to say that he was responsible for the slaying of an innocent, angelic, black child who never meant anyone any harm.
He might not "technically" be guilty of murder; but he really kind of is anyway.

We still have to be able to say that, right?
- To hell with the assholes who intimate anything like that.
