2013: A Year of Awful Writing
— Ace

Michael Moynihan looks back at the Year That Was Incoherent and Silly.

With blogs, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram, and all the other platforms I have forgotten about, we were promised a great democratization of media, a Gutenberg press in the hands of everyone who could muster an opinion about anything. And the media has been democratized (please spare me the heavy breathing about the sinister Koch brothers, Murdoch, Buffett, Bezos, Omidyar, and Soros), which has brought us more entry-level journalists, more stupid journalism, and a permanent public record of every half-witted brainwave from every impulsive Twitter user.

...

[I] watched in wonderment as serious magazines and newspapers hung on every revolutionary word of actor and self-appointed pundit Russell Brand, who in 2013 decided he was the monster who has turned on his creator, attacking capitalism, celebrity culture, and corporate control of the media (while skillfully not rejecting the lucrative paydays they provide).

...

Try, if you will, to digest these paragraphs from a recent Brand column on the supposedly corrupt British parliamentary system, surely a contender for the worst column ever published in a mainstream newspaper:

“That politics is bereft of altruists, philanthropists and idealists but instead throbs and bristles with stunted show-offs, who, granted flatter abs and cuter noses, would be jiving and caterwauling on Britain’s Got Talent or staring with glum vacuity down the barrel of a camera in a mock corridor in Holby City.”

I suspect someone bought Brand a thesaurus for Christmas.

“This pith squirt stings because we want our politicians to be motivated by high ideals and compassion and not to secretly seethe every time Harry Styles impeccably saunters through the public mind with hair that gently binds his scalp to the heavens and mankind to the angels.”

...

Brand later informs readers, those drooling sheeple conditioned by corporations, that the British Parliament “is a deeply encoded temple of hegemonic power.” What any of it means is anyone’s guess.

He then goes on to discuss Salon.com, saying it's now a college student newspaper.

5 Prior to the explosion of mass media, the prose may have been more artful, but the writing still sucked. It sucked because it was lies. It was lies and half-truths and perversions that supported a singular ideology. So while having to wade through ignominious tripe sometimes sucks, I'd rather deal with a glut of bad writers being truthful (at least up front about what they're doing) than skilled, lying wordsmiths.

21 What would one expect? Whenever you democratize ANYTHING you immediately head for the lowest common denominator. All else flows from that precept.

That being said, from the chaff, sometimes a grain of excellence emerges. Or at a minimum some common sense. A classic example was the expose of Dan Rather being a fraud by mere typewriter repairmen and software engineers adept at photoshop forgeries.

25 Parliament is a dominant power with a deeply encoded system. I guess that's what he means, which really doesn't sound much different from the way some Tea Party folks talk about the Congress, but if he's attacking capitalism he's obviously not the British version of the Tea Party.

29 It was a horrible year (why can't he just say that instead of the pretentious Latin) for the opposite of the hideous, which means the glorious, which means Obama.

So when asked to suggest some of 2013Â’s journalistic highlights, I came up with a depressingly thin list.

The author slams others because they don't write as well as a "journalist".  Here's the problem: nobody is impressed by journalists anymore.  Maybe they have better syntax, but when that superior syntax is used in the service of toadying and bootlicking, why do I care?

Moynihan is just pissed off because  the snotty fraternity that he  belongs to is no longer the only game in town.

They've been usurped by the Animal House, and nobody wants to listen to the stuffed shirts when the Delta House throws better parties and is more fun to hang out with.

What pisses  Moynihan off the most, though, is the fact that he knows that if he were to attempt to set foot in Delta House, he'd be getting a swirlie inside of 2 minutes, then be tossed out into the night wearing only his underwear and the pretentious bowtie that he thought might make him look  "hip".

41 because people pay to see someone like Brand do what they think is humor, Brand starts to think he's more than a comedian. Jon Stewart Syndrome, we can call it.

Compare what Brand writes to this quote from Mark Twain: "Suppose you were an idiot, and suppose you were a member of Congress; but I repeat myself." A reasonably bright ten year old could tell who had talent and who had a painful attack of flatulence.

52 I guess Moynihan is saying that the problem isn't Russell Brand per se, but the fact that supposedly high-class people and publications take him seriously. Yep. I agree. The problem isn't really Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn. The problem is that U. Illinois-Chicago and Northwestern actually hired them. The problem isn't Obama, but that 52% of the American people voted for him. The problem isn't nutcases who talk about the oppression of transgendered kindergarteners. It's all of the people who are too stupid or too timid to call a nut a nut and guffaw.

57 About Russell Brand, he actually seems quite quick and nimble on his feet - speech-wise, that is. I've tried to hate the douche. And kinda/sorta do. But, when compared to his entertainment contemporaries he is actually very well-spoken, has a seemingly rich vocabulary at the ready, and uses the right word at the right time with regular and impressive dexterity. Observe him on youtube and judge. (this post was written in under 45 seconds).

There will be repeats later in the day. I remember when Daryl Reaugh played for the Oilers. If Bobby Orr ever plays in an old-timers game (highly unlikely), Don Cherry will be there in all his glory and I'd pay good money to witness it.

Hello, pg. Chatted with Chidude last night there. If you can't log onto T9, try either upgrading Java, or setting it back to an older version. There seem to be version conflicts in the realm of java. For a long time, I couldn't log in with Java on either my desktop or my laptop; then suddenly it started working fine on both, without me having done anything. So try it again soon, if you haven't for a while.

No shit. When I was in school the superintendent had a Bronco with a snowplow, and if he could get to work we were having school. We'd listen to the radio, every town around us was canceled and we'd be on a 2 hour delay; when they were on a 2 hour delay we were on time. It took a storm of epic proportions for us to get canceled.

But on the plus side, we got out before everyone else because we didn't have to make up any snow days.

There was an industrial sized evaporative style cooler that was inversely effective to how deep the summer was creeping in.

I had a good school, no use denying it we were well taken care of it was a USAF base town but by God we paid to keep that building in power as a community.

Anyway we had it made understood to us that the business of America was business and our education was our business.

This makes no sense at all. Do you know Moynihan's CV, and who he is?  He's a former editor of Reason, and a conservative-leaning libertarian (as opposed to the insufferable "liberaltarian" types like Brink Lindsey and Julian Sanchez, etc.). He wouldn't be caught dead writing for Salon.

So, he's a loud ass, he's being the nasty disgusting fool, he's generally attracting universal dislike and scorn by being a person who ought to be disliked and scorned.

And he glides along from performance point to performance point making fairly nice money off of the interest-catching "Russell Brand Show", mostly because he's worked on the Public Butt persona so hard and then sold it so well.

He's a stone capitalist.

So don't hate him for being something that he's not. His personal essence is so hateful by itself, there's no need to spread your hate out. It can take it all and then some.
