A Little Of This. A Little Of That.
— DrewM

In case you missed it last night, I did a podcast with Marc Marano of Climate Depot on the economics and politics of the "Climate change" movement.

There's some satellite imagery of debris in the Indian Ocean that might be part of the missing Malaysian Air flight.

Obama announced some more sanctions on individual Russians and a bank. He also told Putin that if Russia is willing to totally change its worldview this Ukraine thing can all work out in the end for everyone. I'm sure Putin is thrilled with the offer.

Jennifer Rubin used to think the GOP needed to do outreach to non-traditional voters. Then Rand Paul did it by going to Berkeley and now Rubin thinks it's a terrible idea. The problem is Paul talked about things liberals might agree with him, for example his opposition to domestic surveillance. Rubin would have preferred this outreach consist of Paul talking about things like support for traditional marriage (which Rubin disagrees with) that liberals would have hated.

It's pretty clear that Rubin's "ideological purity" tests for candidates will be the ruin of the GOP.

Say what you will about Paul's stance on a given issue but he's a smart politician. He tries to find ways to allow people to support him. Even if they don't buy everything he's selling, he tries to give them a bridge to vote for him. That seems like smart politics to me.

You know, it's almost as if Rubin is a hack who will say anything and bend herself into a pretzel to protect her beloved liberal Republicans (so long as they agree to BOMB ALL THE PLACES!).

Almost.

Just more evidence that the "moderate" GOPers who cry for the "Big Tent" actually just want people to agree with their particular point of view.

They are just lacking sufficient self-awareness to be able to know this.

Even just having the force available would probably make it unnecessary.

It's all a bunch of old-style 17th century Mercantilism where China gets to buy $ 50/bbl or whatever the amount is oil in Venezuela, sells the products made out of that oil in the United States at markups to match the 100/bbl price it would cost us to make the stuff, and the Venezuelans get empty store shelves, ration numbers, and Cuban shooters on motorcycles enforcing it all.

91 I've still not had anyone explain to me how it's legal for the Preezy of th United Steezy to seize the assets of individual Russians kept here in the United States. Unless they've broken the law, how is this even close to legal? And if they've broken the law, why are they only now having their accounts frozen?

From what I've heard and read, both the Russians and the Ukraines on Obamas dreaded list did not have any assets in the US therefore a toothless gesture.  A Russian politician even mocked Obama on twitter about that.

Paul, even as a libertarian, even if he really is close to his dad on foreign policy, would be the most conservative candidate since at least Bush 43, maybe Reagan.

Out of the governors I've heard offered, only Walker or Jindal are conservatives. Bush, Christie, Romney (again)...etc...are all liberals.

I'm not *at all* worried about executive experience. Obama, for example, had none, and he's pretty much managed to destroy the US as we knew it as was his goal in 2009.

263 The reason Rand's dad is a problem for him is that Rand himself has such a sparse public record and, of course, because he has not exactly spent a lot of effort distancing himself from his father's positions in most things.

It doesn't help that his main strategy seems to be to lie his damn ass off about what his Dad's position was on stuff back in the 80's. I was 21 in 1988, I was on Ron Paul's mailing list and voted for him then. My positions have changed since then, Rand Paul's approach is to just pretend those weren't Ron Paul's positions, and I know he's lying. So all I can say is Dude, What The Fuck?

264 Judging from the actions of Harry Reid and Barry Obama, Washington D.C. is now the gangster capital of the world.

265 The Dems and their minions in the MSM will go after whoever the Repubs nominate. Any criticism of Hillary! (presuming she is the candidate) will be turned into "sexism" and "fear of a strong woman"; no matter whom the Repubs nominate, he (she) will be criticized for anything that can be thought of (this governor doesn't have any foreign policy experience, that senator doesn't have any executive experience, etc)

And don't forget that digging through trash (real and figurative) will be entirely directed at one side only.

We could just as well go with Cruz: think of Hillary in a debate with him. (I thought the same about Barky debating Gingrich in 2012. Bloodbath.)

267 There's always talk from the GOPe about how the party has to adjust their policies to appeal to voters who normally support Dems

Rand Paul has by far the greatest appeal to the youth vote because he stands for government that leaves us alone, opposes sticking our nose into every foreign involvement, and thinks that privacy and protection from prying government eyes is kind of important

But of course the GOPe doesn't want anyone actually doing something about it if it doesn't support rent seeking large donors like the Chamber of Commerce

268 Under what Authority is the US President seizing the Assets of Russian Private Citizens, without any Court Proceeding? Note, the Constitution's 5th Amendment says 'NO PERSON'... not no Citizen. Posted by: Romeo13 at March 20, 2014 11:47 AM (84gbM) ________________ Umm, I believe it was done by an Executive Order - which, as we well know, are not governed by the US Const (or something like that)

269 "224 By the By, because of this Ukraine stuff, Russia is going to fubar the Iranian Nuke talks, and obama will be left holding the bag and all he will be able to do is fold. That will leave it to Israel to act on it's own and the Middle East will be that much closer to an explosion. I always beep my bag packed for occasions like this

Obama has plenty of options.  Many of them involve him just ceasing to obstruct energy development in the United States.  He could also issue an executive order to the EPA directing them to stop preventing economical conversion of existing vehicles to run on compressed natural gas so that millions of individual Americans would pay their own money to convert their own vehicles and reduce US gasoline consumption by some significant amount.  Both of those actions together would drop the world oil price overnight and make Putin's oligarch buddies cry.

Obama also has plenty of military options.  Since he plans to economize with the military, he could relocate most of the NATO resources left in Germany to Poland which has a much lower cost of living.  He can give away tanks, planes and other military equipment that we will not have the men to operate to Poland and the other former Warsaw Pact countries.  He can push to add any former Warsaw Pact countries that are not yet in NATO into that organization.  He can give Great Britain the aircraft carrier that the US Navy will no longer be operating.

Of course, we know that Barack Obama will do none of those things.  Vladimir Putin was smart to act early in Obama's second term after he had a first term to weaken the United States and while we have to wait another three year to try to repair the damage.

270 President JugEars McFuckstick just announced new "draconian" sanctions against Russia: He's cancelling Putin's Netflix subscription and sending Dennis Rodman to drunkenly defecate in the halls of various 4-star hotels in Moscow.

It's unlikely we'll have another President of either party this feckless, foolish, weak and inept for a very long time. Bad guys, strangely impervious to President Obama's sheer messianic awesomeness, see an opportunity.

I'm guessing China will make its play next. Last month, the Chinese said, 'Why no, we have no plans to establish an Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) encompassing the whole of the South China Sea.'

Watch. The Chinese will do just that in the next few months--and maybe sink a few Philippine fishing boats while they're at it, just for fun, knowing the United States will do nothing. Obama will, however, lambaste the Japanese for reconsidering their no-nukes policy in reaction to Chinese expansionism, 'cause that's how he rolls: reward our enemies, punish our allies.

We've never had a worse President. Not even James Buchanan, a closeted secessionist, confederate sympathizer and suspected traitor, was this dangerous to the country, and that's saying something.

And the best way to help the Ukrainian people is to buy my health insurance!

But wait, there's more! If you act now, you not only can keep your doctor and stop Putin: You will also get the Bamboo Steamer and a Pocket Fisherman (shipping and handling not included)!

273 >>Under what Authority is the US President seizing the Assets of Russian Private Citizens, without any Court Proceeding? As I understand it a freeze is not a "taking". During World War One, the royalties Springfield owed to Mauser for the bolt assembly of the 1903 rifle were paid into trust, and released at the war's end. Germany earned on every rifle, but didn't get paid during the war against her. It's part of the traditional notion that no foriegner has a right to come to the US and make money, which usually Obama decries as racist and extremist.

I'd have no problem with the United States straight-out confiscating whatever holdings the Russian oligarchs bankrolling Putin have in our country. None.

After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the Russian people had a real chance--for the first time in their long history--of establishing a free country. That window closed when former KGB and communist party hacks gobbled up the country's capital for themselves. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. Fuck them.

276 Liberal branding goes both ways. In foreign policy Rand Paul is a liberal with a capital L. And Rubin is not. So... You are as right as you are wrong. I'm just looking for someone to stop the Socialism and get back to some rugged individualism... If Rand Paul does that... good. If we elect a liberal Republican of any stripe... getting the government surveillance stopped is a good thing. Any Republican is better than any Democrat.

277 New MU Law poll out next week of the WI Gov's race. Rasmussen has Walker/Burke tied and the jobs numbers out yesterday were brutally bad and were top of the page headlines today. If he has any thoughts about running for President, he better start doing a better job campaigning here.
