Abortion Barbie: Yeah, I Could Support A Limit On Abortion After 20 Weeks
— DrewM

Wendy Davis apparently just realized that she's running for Governor of Texas and not New York.

Davis, a Fort Worth senator and the likely Democratic nominee for governor, told The Dallas Morning NewsÂ’ editorial board that less than one-half of 1 percent of Texas abortions occur after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Most of those were in cases where fetal abnormalities were evident or there were grave risks to the health of the woman.

“I would line up with most people in Texas who would prefer that that’s not something that happens outside of those two arenas,” Davis said.

But the Democrat said the stateÂ’s new abortion law didnÂ’t give priority to women in those circumstances. The law allows for exceptions for fetal abnormalities and a threat to the womanÂ’s life, but Davis said those didnÂ’t go far enough.

“My concern, even in the way the 20-week ban was written in this particular bill, was that it didn’t give enough deference between a woman and her doctor making this difficult decision, and instead tried to legislatively define what it was,” Davis said.

So to sum up, the woman who made her name, such as it is, filibustering the bill that prevents abortion after 20 weeks now supports the concept?

Ok, first of all, no she doesn't. I'm sure her doctor/patient exception or whatever she'll call it will be big enough to drive Kermit Gosnel's clinic slaughterhouse through.

But...the people who support her and made her a folk hero don't want any restrictions on abortions. More than that they don't want any sort of negative connotation associated with abortion. Having the latest poster girl for their holy cause even insinuate that it could be restricted or that the pro-life crowd should be catered to will be quite the blow.

Meanwhile, Charlie Crist emails to say, "Damn, this is some shameless pandering, huh?".

Marco Rubio follows up with, "Wendy, you're supposed to wait until after the election to flip. Oh right, you will flip back if you're elected. Ok, I get that."

Seriously, it's nice to see Democrats have to deal with this for once. It doesn't matter since she won't even come close to winning but the "even Wendy Davis says abortions after 20 weeks should be restricted" will be a fun talking point.

8 Krystal Ball, one of four progressives who together make up MSNBC’s left-wing love-fest “The Cycle,” called on Hillary Clinton to cede the Democratic nomination to Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

“I deeply respect Hillary Clinton,” Ball began. “I think she’s a great intellect with great fortitude. I think she was a strong secretary of state, a hardworking and effective senator. But I’ve come to a difficult realization: I don’t want Hillary Clinton to run for president in 2016. I do not think she is the right person for this moment.”

21 Fuck them all. Fuck all of those murdering, blood soaked bastards. It's a personal contradiction and probably a personal failing that I am appalled by the glee with which abortion supporters approach the slaughter of innocents, yet if I was given the power of a God I'd gleefully slaughter them all. Not having been offered the power of a God, it's an intellectual exercise, but I can live with the contradiction. The moment an innocent unborn baby threatens one of their worthless lives I'll change my mind.

She opposed the bill for one reason and one reason only: Because of the provisions that it would hold abortion mills to the same standards as any other surgical location.

Even the excellent Free Beacon article on Hillary sort of glossed over the fact that Bill's defining characteristic was his womanizing. It's one thing to stay loyal to a serial cheating spouse. It's another to stay with him so as to profit from it. Oh, and Hillary's campaign slogan will effectively be "Vote Hillary. Don't you just feel sorry for her?"

50 "Davis, a Fort Worth senator and the likely Democratic nominee for governor, told The Dallas Morning News' editorial board that less than one-half of 1 percent of Texas abortions occur after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Most of those were in cases where fetal abnormalities were evident or there were grave risks to the health of the woman."

Been there and done that with listening to these sorts of claims.

Back in the Nineties, when the partial-birth abortion question was starting to be debated, the abortion lobby sent out a guy named Ron Fitzsimmons, head of the National Coalition of Abortion Providers, to aggressively defend the practice of PBA.

Fitzsimmons stumped up and down the country, writing op-eds, appearing on television, and stressing over and over again that:

-- There were next to no partial-birth abortions being done

-- In no cases were they performed electively to eliminate a healthy fetus from a healthy mother

-- In every case it was always 'life and health of the mother' as the clinical medical justification

All of this was a complete tissue of lies. Fitzsimmons knew this at the time and later openly admitted to same. He fessed up that there were far more PBA being performed than the abortion lobby wanted to admit in public, and some of those PBA were of perfectly healthy infants.

So when I hear such a _trustworthy_ (cough) individual as Wendy Davis talking about how rare late-term abortion is, and about fetal abnormalities being the indication for it, I just don't buy it any longer. Sorry. No dice.

That, to me, is one of the things that makes me sick: Too many in this society care more about the treatment of animals than our own babies.

Somebody shoots a dog and everyone is fighting for first place in line to exact pain and punishment upon the shooter.

Somebody stabs a baby in the back of the neck to kill it and . . . "that's none of your business!!"

That, that is why she opposed the bill: Because it would shut down the abortion mills that failed to meet the basic standards of cleanliness and sanitation. All the other talk was deflection and subterfuge to hide her true objections. Posted by: RoyalOil at February 12, 2014 10:42 AM (VjL9S) They did it in Virginia a few years ago. Planned Parenthood that goes on and on about how they are a "healthcare provider" for women, but they didn't have to have the meet same sanitary conditions as a barber shop. Now they have to meet the conditions of a medical clinic, and the pro-abortion forces are up in a tiz about it because the clinics were not "grandfathered" in.

That's the problem, my friend.

Once you admit it is a human being?

Esh. It gets real ugly and sticky thinking about what we've allowed to become acceptable.

If it is a human being, then we have to have severe restrictions upon the practice.

Remember "safe, legal and rare?" Only one of those is true, that it is legal. It was a lie then and it is a lie now.

When a baby is entitled to a defense lawyer and a jury of 12 before being sentenced to death, then I'll concede we've the proper respect for life.

That would be a purely awesome parody with some artfully rewritten lyrics. And if someone could be found to sing it who has the pipes of Shirley Bassey.

191 175 Why is it libs love abortion but hate the death penalty? Posted by: Navycopjoe at February 12, 2014 11:19 AM (fA5xz) --I always keep this great PJO quote handy: "The second item in the liberal creed, after self-righteousness, is unaccountability. Liberals have invented whole college majors— psychology, sociology, women's studies— to prove that nothing is anybody's fault. No one is fond of taking responsibility for his actions, but consider how much you'd have to hate free will to come up with a political platform that advocates killing unborn babies but not convicted murderers. A callous pragmatist might favor abortion and capital punishment. A devout Christian would sanction neither. But it takes years of therapy to arrive at the liberal view." --from Give War a Chance

And, good grief, can you imagine if someone took a typical African country's draconian laws about homosexuality, and purged them of any hints as to their origin, and then described those laws to the left as something that a Bible Belt legislator in the USA was proposing ab initio?

I tend to look at abortion pretty much the  same way as child molestation.  Yes, we know it happens.  Yes, it's happened all throughout history.  People, including parents, can do horrendous things to   children.

So what's the  solution?   Bringing  it out of the shadows?   Making it safe?  Acceptable?  Legal?

And if we make it illegal again, what happens?   Will it hurt the self-esteem of the monsters  who  perpretrate such crimes?  Is that what is stopping us?

275 Progtards go on and on and on and oh dear lord please make it stop go ON AND ON AND ON about how incredibly cool and awesome and fantastic and advanced Europe is, and how stupid backward bitter clinging America needs to become more like Europe in every possible way. Except of course when the subject turns to abortion, where many European countries have tighter rules about abortion timing than is the case in the USA, and where abortions must as a matter of law be performed in a fully accredited hospital by a certified surgical team. No Gosnell style abortion mills permitted. Then suddenly progtards get stammery and quickly change the subject. 276 200 This terrifies me, because I think we're heading for an era where Libs run faux-cons who will then totally flip when they get in office. It's already happening in many states. Posted by: Tammy al-Thor at February 12, 2014 11:24 AM (Z6IPg) They have been doing it for years in every conservative state. Remember, Al Gore was sold as a moderate to conservative Democrat Senator when he ran for President in 88, and VP in 92. Once he didn't become President, he reverted to his roots. The "Blue Dogs" have always been liberals, they just hide it so that they can be bought off for their vote. See the "Cornhusker Kickback",

281 Wendy Davis co-authored several amendments as late as 2013 to impose Obamacare and force Texas taxpayers to fund abortion providers.  She even co-authored a bill last year to raid our Rainy Day Fund to expand Medicaid through Obamacare.

She has also introduced three pieces of legislation with the intent to knee cap the oil & gas industry.  Wendy loves the EPA as she voted no on SB875.

My concern is that my fellow citizens who are either TSTL or are LIV will buy into her "blue dog" Democrat routine.

282 Abortion isn't a social issue, it is a      human rights issue.

Posted by: Vashta Nerada at February 12, 2014 07:44 AM (eGmvn)

283 Will I get stomped for this? If so, oh well. Human life begins at conception. That mass of cells? It's human. Not a cat, or dog, or fish, Human. The heartbeat, those tiny little fingers and toes, Human. Pro-choice? The not yet born human doesn't have a choice. We kill them because they're not considered human. The nazzies had the same approach to the Jews, the Slaves and others. Including those who disagreed with the state.

Posted by: ExSnipe at February 12, 2014 07:44 AM (LKJt3)

284 The discussion about restrictions on abortion after so many weeks is extrememly dangerous for the pro-death crowd and should be pursued at every opportunity. The radicals know that if they agree to any restriction the entire case for killing babies starts to fall apart. If viability or life at any point prior to the baby leaving the skin covering is accepted, the discussion becomes, "How can it be bad on day 145 and OK on day 144? 143...142...120...110?" Once they go there, the fact that they are guessing at viability and playing God is exposed and the game is over. Getting that camel's nose under the tent is very important. This is also why the only restiction I can accept morally is when the choice is between the life of the mother and that of the baby.

363 337 I am fairly certain that freedom is an incompatible concept for humanity. History does tend to lead us to that conclusion. Just look at the history of the entire continent of Africa, just for starters. But I believe that freedom is the natural state of humanity. Which is why I have such a visceral hatred of Communism. I don't just dislike Communism. I detest it with every fiber of my being.

That's not how it works.  There's a difference between the debt limit and spending limits imposed by Congress.

At this point they should just do away with the debt limit completely.  That which isn't enforced is meaningless.

Good insight, I'd just add that it's humanity's natural state until the group becomes too large.  After that, tyranny and oppression become more commonplace.

387 You are misreading her statements. She is making the old pro-choice-not-pro-abortion argument. Note, she says she would "PREFER that thatÂ’s not something that happens outside of those two arenas." But she sticks by her position that the bill "didnÂ’t give enough deference between a woman and her doctor...instead tried to legislatively define what it was." I would not be shocked at all to find similar statements from her around the time the bill was being debated (nor shocked by a lack thereof). I agree that this is an intellectually weak position in the context of late term abortion, but she is not at all saying she would support any law restricting abortion.

Seriously, it's nice to see Democrats have to deal with this for once. It doesn't matter since she won't even come close to winning but the "even Wendy Davis says abortions after 20 weeks should be restricted" will be a fun talking point.

I am extremly careful about making statements such as this one.  Democrats now have commanding majorities in every urban center in the state.  Those of use who live in these urban areas are suffering with liberal Democrat administrations in almost everyone of them.  In addition the rural areas of the state are loosing population and control of the state may be slipping.

Let us not be over optimistic, it leads to defeat.

Bill Clements (R)  was the governor before Ann Richards.  He was a two termer.  The only scandal I remember with Clements was the SMU booster club slush fund that was paying the football players.

I think Ann Richards won because the Republicans ran a member of the good ole boy club, Clayton Williams, who just had to make a joke about rape.

Now that I think on it, I guess Clayton Williams was a forerunner of Republican candidates that suffer from foot-in-mouth disease.

400 I was present for the entire debate and final vote on HB 2 this past Summer. Wendy Davis was vocal in her opposition to the bill. She spoke at length about wanting exemptions added, but I got the feeling that even if they had been added, she still would have voted against the bill. This is an explicit flip flop.

@400 darii

I don't defend Davis, but it doesn't sound like a flip flop. If anything her current statement is less anti-abortion than her aattempts to amend the bill. At least with proposed exemptions there could have been a pretense of supporting (or just merely trying to make the law "less bad"). Her current statements merely state a personal preference while restating her opposition to codifying that preference.
