— CAC Warning- wide margins.

At top, the forecast from December as published over at The Federalist. At bottom, the picture as things stand today.
The news out of Colorado just piled onto the Democrats' existing problems. Everyone expected that the Republicans would target the seats in the seven states that voted for Romney: Montana, South Dakota, Arkansas, West Virginia, North Carolina, Louisiana and Alaska. They are, and they outright lead in 6 out of the 7 (Alaska, the sole exception, is likely the artifact of sparse polling). Democrats' chances of retaining the chamber remained over 50/50 when the map was limited to just that- Republicans would need to sweep 6 out of 7 targets, and their recent track record of actual wins versus contested races didn't inspire much confidence in that.
But now, not only is the GOP favored in the initial round of states, they are (at least for now) in the driver's seat in Michigan, making a big, serious play for Colorado, and depending on how they sort things out, are at least semi-serious about New Hampshire and Iowa. The larger the map grows, the tougher it is for the Democrats to keep the Senate.
There comes a point, really, where triage will begin if this map holds or even worsens. It would begin in the states even the Democrats admit are becoming tough holds: West Virginia, Montana, South Dakota. They will try to protect as many incumbents as possible, but if any start approaching Blanche Lincoln territory, it is doubtful the Democrats will pour good money in after bad.
Triaging races would likely do more harm than good: every conceded race brings the Republicans a seat closer to a majority. Firewalls work when the map remains small. This is why what happened yesterday is so important- the shake up in the GOP side for Udall's seat makes that race a top priority, adding to an ever-growing list of legitimate targets. An enemy with a wound can slink off. One with a half-dozen or more will be dead on the field barring a dramatic rescue.
The one-two punch of vulnerable incumbents and numerous vacancies is something the Republicans are familiar with: in 2006 and 2008, they were left defending incumbents in places like Rhode Island, Oregon, Minnesota; and desperately trying to save vacated seats in then-swing states like Colorado, New Mexico, and Virginia. This year has the potential to equal that two-cycle collapse in one disastrous election.
Of course, the election is still eight months out. That's plenty of time for the GOP to destroy itself, or for the economy to spontaneously roar back to life, or for President Obama to send fifty-pound packages of bacon to every household in America. But right now, things look bad for the Democrats, and they have the potential to get much, much worse.

OK. Maybe. And then, with a gloriously GOP Senate, and the House ....... what will they do?
Remember - they'll only have one third of govt. (As if, under our system, the judicial branch is supposed to be equated with legislative and executive in terms of power to take action affirmatively and independently - itself a hilarious example of GOP arrogance and contempt for their own voters)
So, meh.

You see, this is the perfect argument for plaid maps. Folks who have trouble seeing colors can key off of patterns. ADA blog compliance, y'know.

DC driver's license ...... still recall going into a drugstore a few years back, freshly returned from one of our fun, er, war zones, and being unable to buy Sudafed-like pills for a raging head cold. Drugstore system didn't have any codes for DC licenses (this was in CA). Come to think of it, that was one of the early incidents that bundled up so much idiocy of various kinds and has led to a 100% disillusionment with the country, and society over the last few years. I recall the other people in line, and the store manager, basically shared my disbelief and disgust that buying f***ing cold medicine had become such a ridiculous goat-rope.

This.
::: resigned mutterings :::
I remember the GOP having not just the House and the Senate, but the Oval Office. And what were the triumphant results?
Two wars which amounted to nothing more than profusely pouring blood and treasure out into the sand to no durable end. Not just any blood: some of the best the nation has. Not just any amount of treasure: a colossal amount of borrowed money. Meanwhile, at home: the creation of the Department of Homeland Security and the Transportation Security Administration. No cutbacks or abolishments of any existing government agencies. McCain-Feingold. Sarbanes-Oxley. Enormously bloated pork sausages masquerading as "farm" and "highway" bills. The Dread Justice Roberts (it's a tax!) heading up the Supreme Court. Harriet WTF Miers nearly on the Supreme Court. Light bulb bans. Ethanol everything. And a massive unrelenting push for illegal-alien amnesty.
Wow, with a track record like that, I can't tell you how very excited I am at the thought of voting Republican this year!
That is, I quite literally can't tell you how very excited I am.
Because I am not very excited at all. It's a grim duty.

No surprise whatoseover. An absolutely amazing number of people in Commiefornia are completely unaware that the District of Columbia is not a state. I'm not making this up. It's probably the default majority opinion here.
That's our state's wonderful unionized public school system at work.
Because, y'know, states are just part of the imperialist system artificially imposed by force (with guns!) on the pacifist, matriarchal, Gaia-worshipping natives by evil phallocentric European Christian men who hate the planet and anyone who is not just like them. So why learn about that "states" crap anyway? They will be done away with sooner or later as all are absorbed and become Of The Body.

Nevergiveup of course I agree re general weakness and incompetence, just quibbling with Egypt (you're still wrong, and it isn't lost, unless you assume Obama-like presidencies for a few more terms - the army and Alexandria want a US connection, not a Russian one, whatever their short-term procurement stunts and strategies might look like).
And Dubya very much fumbled Iraq at the end, at least in a negative sense of not working a miracle - though it's not easy to see an alternative, as the IRAQIS THEMSELVES screwed everything up with their refusal to sign any worthwhile SOFA. This was pre-screwed up when these idiots took over in 2009. By the Iraqis themselves. It was definitely not a promising situation that the idiotic Obama people messed up.
But like all else, I fear it's hopeless to actually frame foreign policy questions in a serious fashion - that is, not always and only revolving around US action/inaction. Competence is hugely important, and the current administration is the most disastrously incompetent in modern history, but that doesn't account for many many challenging things that happen in the world. They happen anyway - it's how we respond that we're really talking about.

It's really hard to argue against the statement that the differences between the two parties are differences of degree, not of kind, when the GOP is pushing for amnesty, "compromising" on the budget in such a way as to spend even more than the Democrats were asking for, throwing in the towel on the increasingly unpopular Obamacare, not doing a thing to protect Christian business owners who don't want to participate in same-sex weddings, not treating the myriad forms of corruption in the Executive Branch as anything resembling a high-priority matter, and even fighting their own base with a ferocity they can't muster for the opposing party.
I try, but when one of my non-voting friends says, "It doesn't really matter who wins, because both parties are the same," and I can't come up with a better response than, "Nuh-uh! Your mom!", that's a problem.

torquewrench, your bill of particulars on domestic policy is a grim echo of my own disillusionment (I think you left out Medicare Part D?).
But your comments on Iraq/A-stan are actually reminders of why I regret ever risking a pinky "for the country" and have no more hope for our international prospects: the country, including many "conservatives", is fundamentally unserious about national security. Neither war bears the slightest resemblance to your description, as commonplace as it is.

That does not answer my question. I repeat, is it your contention that Greg Brannon was found guilty of a criminal charge of theft and fraud?
You see, your use of the terms "convicted" and "crook" are designed to lead to a very clear implication. Therefore, I wish to know if you are willing to back up that implication. Because, you see, I knew the answer to that question before those links. I am deeply interested in knowing yours.
For the record, I am utterly agnostic (unintentional call back to the theme of today's posts) as to Brannon's candidacy. However, I am not agnostic, in the slightest, to the concept of duplicity.
So. I ask again. Are you saying that Brannon was convicted, criminally, of theft and fraud?

As did I...back in the days of wooden ships, with long voyages and lots of down time waiting on wind, one of the ways to maintain order was to keep the crew busy, so constant cleaning was a given (not to mention the hygienic benefits, such as preventing the spread of shipborne disease). A buddy of mine got the same treatment twenty years ago from a frankly pretty hot number to whom he was engaged. It hit him hard.
A couple of us guys went over to buck up his spirits with distilled spirits.
And among the observations was, "Anyone who won't treat you with reasonable respect while leaving is someone you're better off without."
It took my buddy about THREE YEARS of moping to get over his depressed dumpitude and see the wisdom of that advice. But he did. Brightened and blossomed and started dating again. And fortunately did not succumb to the "they're all bitches" syndrome that locks some badly treated guys into perpetual bitter bachelorhood.
Today, he's married to an admirable woman in a rock solid marriage and they both treat one another with an amazing level of love and respect.
The woman who dumped him had a long string of boyfriends after that and then slowly ran out of looks. Flipped out in a major way when the whistles and catcalls and the proffered phone numbers stopped. Fell off the radar. No idea where she is now or if she's even on the top side of the grass still.
Lessons learnt.

He was convicted of civil FRAUD, the stealing of $250,000 from his former classmates.
The court ordered him to repay that money.
He is a convicted crook, by the decision of a jury. Posted by: Nip Sip at February 27, 2014 10:03 PM (0FSuD)
Do you know the difference between civil and criminal court?
Let me put you some knowledge. A civil jury can find someone liable. A civil jury can order restitution. A civil jury can find a person to be negligent or to have engaged in intentional acts. But do you know what a civil jury cannot do? A civil jury cannot convict anyone of anything at all. A conviction is a finding of criminal fault.
Also the court did not order him to repay the money, the jury made such a finding and the court will enforce that civil verdict.
I see that you are bound and determined to double down on the convicted crook, by the decision of the jury formulation. That leads me to the following conclusion. Either you are incapable of comprehending the difference between criminal and civil or you are more than willing to be utterly duplicitous and use language which you are aware carries a clear implication of criminal conviction, a fact which you know to be wholly false.
I will grant that you have the wit to know the difference between civil and criminal. That means you are duplicitous. I shall bear that in mind when reading what you say in the future.
Also, I fail to note any type of finding of stealing or theft by the jury. Fraud is not theft. Fraud is not stealing. You may think that it is the same thing but stating that a jury found such? Well, I shall fall back on duplicity on your part.
Here's the ridiculous part. There is no need on your part to shade the facts as you are. Even given what I know about civil jury verdicts and how those verdicts frequently do not comport with objective reality, I would concur that this is a significant matter. But no. No, you feel compelled, for reasons that are truly beyond me, to attempt to portray this as something it is not. Okay then.

I did leave out Part D, and it's assuredly part of the list, and I thank you.
"But your comments on Iraq/A-stan are actually reminders of why I regret ever risking a pinky 'for the country' and have no more hope for our international prospects: the country, including many 'conservatives', is fundamentally unserious about national security."
I spend a lot of time ruminating about national security issues. And defense is after all a specifically enumerated Constitutional function of the federal government.
I have had a long long long list of people try to argue me out of the belief that the wars of the 2000s were not completely ass-backwards and a bloodsoaked fiasco. None have succeeded. Not even close.
Any national security strategy which starts with, as first premises, the ideas that "Islam is a religion of peace," and that "Saudi Arabia and Pakistan will be our allies in a War On Terror," is a strategy which owes more intellectual inspiration to Lewis Carroll than it owes to von Clausewitz.
I put it to you that one of the chief elements of a realistic, functional national security strategy is keeping the populace aware that war may happen and that the country must be kept ready for war, just in case. A corollary is that getting into wars without good prospects of a durable political outcome (remember: war is the continuation of politics by other means) works against this end.
Where are we today? In a condition where two horribly botched, mismanaged wars of choice, wars that should not have happened, have demoralized the American electorate. Those wars revived an isolationist pacifism in America (in a world no longer structurally hospitable to isolationism pacifism), and where Americans now think it's perfectly OK to have a military shrunken to its smallest size since before the Second World War without any risk of anything going awry.

I hate it, and try to disagree with myself about it, but at this point I truly believe that decline is inevitable barring a transformative event, and I can't imagine one. I'm not the most imaginative or creative person in the world, but I can game out possibilities, and I can't imagine a major and transformative event that would make the American people want the ratchet of government to reverse its course, whereas its very easy to imagine any number of scenarios where the government must increase its footprint in order to maintain and preserver the status quo. We are all in the pot, and heat is being turned up. Will enough frogs notice soon enough to jump out? I doubt it.

Nobody was convicted of anything. A jury said he should give a couple guys their money back.

The Irishman asked for a whiskey and a glass of Guinness, which were promptly brought and placed before him.
The flight attendant then asked the Mormon if he would like a drink.
He replied in disgust, "I'd rather be savagely raped by a dozen whores than let liquor touch my lips."
The Irishman then handed his drinks back to the attendant and said, "Me too, I didn't know we had a choice."

Nothing quite like watching an idiot double down on his idiocy.
Brannon was not in criminal court, he was in civil court. Civil juries do not find defendants guilty. Every time you say that he was found guilty, you, Nip Sip, are telling a lie.
He was found *liable*. That word has a different meaning than the word guilty. He will not be sentenced to prison. Unless he wins on appeal, he will be responsible for repaying the investors who claim that they were misled by Brannon.
Does it mean nothing that he has this civil judgement against him? No, it raises serious questions about his integrity and suitableness for public office. But there is no need for anyone to run around lying about him to suggest that he is a convicted criminal. He is not.

Let's see, you guys threw down 250 large on someone's _verbal representation_ about the bright prospects of a particular company, without doing any further homework on said prospects?
Bailiff! Bailiff! Inform whomever it is in the jury room to stop laughing at the top of their lungs and making rude fart sounds!

Exactly. It boils down the difference between "it looks like Verizon might be on board with this," and "Verizon is on board with this."
Was he deliberately misleading? Overzealous? Just plain mistaken?
None of that was shown. Merely that his statements were misleading, and he owes his investors what they gave him, plus interest.

What will get blamed when it doesn;t happen this time I wonder. A storm? Some congressman who stumbles over his words in an interview? The eeeevil social conservatives? Anything but admitting the truth of our electoral system.

He was convicted of civil FRAUD, the stealing of $250,000 from his former classmates.
The court ordered him to repay that money.
He is a convicted crook, by the decision of a jury.

-------
The operative word is "civil". He was sued and lost, he was not convicted of anything. If he stole the money, why wasn't he charged with a crime?
You are either completely ignorant of the law, or a liar.
(I never heard of the guy, and live on the west coast, so I have no dog in the fight.)
