And Now a Factual Documentary About George Washington
— Ace

I found this on the Internet, so, of course, it must be true.

Washington wasn't the only badass president.

And some people think that Alexander Hamilton was a president. Groupon issued an advertisement honoring Hamilton for President's day, and when someone wrote to say Hamilton wasn't, in fact, ever a president (or even a candidate for the office), Groupon responded:

We respect everyone's beliefs. You're certainly entitled to your opinion.

A nice mantra to live by, except when... it makes no sense whatsoever.

Update: Groupon's kidding. Ah okay. It's still funny, but now it's deliberately funny.

Open Thread.

58 "'We respect everyone's beliefs. You're certainly entitled to your opinion.' A nice mantra to live by, except when... it makes no sense whatsoever."

It's academic postmodernism in a nutshell.

There are no actual facts. There is no objective external reality. EVERYTHING is illusory, fluid, socially constructed subjective opinion.

These are the people who proclaim that the speed of light cannot be a constant, because to declare such would mean that a particular speed was being "privileged" relative to other speeds. (Presumably underprivileged ethnic-minority gay and lesbian speeds.)

I'm not making up that argument, by the way. Lefty feminist pomo literary theorists really do say, and believe, such things.

116 From my friend, Brent Carter's Book:

"Condiser the fall season of 1777, near Brandywine Creek, an American officer and his  escort were investigating a position to stop British General Howe's forces...  A British officer, Captain Patrick Ferguson, inventor of the first breech loading rifle, noticed two figures on horseback riding along the hillside"

Ferguson yelled a warning instead of shooting at the two officers, one of whom was General George Washington.  Ferguson could have shot Washington in the back, but did not.  Out of military etiquette.

137 True fact: Washington practically singlehandedly started the Seven Years War which was known in America as the French and Indian War. Washington was leading a small patrol which included Indian allies through the wilderness when they ran across some Indians who were allies of the French but enemies of Washington's Indians. Washington's Indians massacred the others and a global war was the result.

I blame the end of the Cold War, ESPN-2's coverage of national events/the X-Games, more entertainment options available to compete with, and MOST IMPORTANTLY NBC's increasingly poorly produced and commentated coverage. The local station affiliate for NBC is nixing daytime coverage of some events to show infomercials on weekends for piss sake.

284 "it'd be kind of cool to read an alternative history of the USA wherein all the losers of the elections were the winners, so that say Goldwater wins and little girls with daisies get nuked, and McGovern wins and we puss out, nationally"

So, um, alternate history:

McGovern wins in 1972 on the "Come Home America" platform and disengages as rapidly as is reasonably possible from South Vietnam.

Compared to actual history, South Vietnam looks different at the end of 1975 how again exactly?

Either version ends up in a national puss-out. With a Communist flag over Saigon in the end.

Further: you have to figure on the extremely high odds of, in a 1972 McGovern victory scenario, that the guy is one and done, impossible to re-elect. At least for a white radical leftist facing the 1970s electoral demographics.

Do you then see a vicious primary fight between Spiro Agnew and Ronald Reagan for the GOP nomination in 1976? Talk about a fateful showdown.

351 @332 I wouldn't put too much into the 1919. Could just be the number of forms made that or some reference to the statute requiring the form. The pistol permits were a Jim Crow deal to stop Blacks from getting pistols, so they could have started in 1919. Who knows. They are stupid and we will repeal them next session, my guess.

I think you are nitpicking here. After all, doesn't every TV series browbeat us over how intolerant we are?

383 Modern America doesn't pay a lot of attention to social interaction, so we've lost the word "calumny". Alexander Hamilton enjoyed spreading them. His error was doing it to a real louse, Aaron Burr.
