And Now an Important Announcement From the Southern Poverty Law Center:
Opposition to Common Core Is Right-Wing Extremism and Racism Straight-Up

— Ace

Of course.

They don't actually say "racist," now that I read it more carefully.

It does, however, seem strongly implied.

To the propaganda machine on the right, the Common Core—an effort driven by the states—is actually “Obamacore,” a nefarious federal plot to wrest control of education from local school systems and parents. Instead of the “death panels” of “Obamacare,” the fear is now “government indoctrination camps.”

The disinformation campaign is being driven by the likes of Fox News, the John Birch Society, Tea Party factions, and the Christian Right. National think tanks and advocacy groups associated with the Koch brothers, whose father was a founding Birch member, have taken up the cause.

By raising the specter of “Obamacore,” activists on the radical right hope to gain leverage against their real target—public education itself.

You can read the whole report, if you like, though I can't imagine why. It does acknowledge that there are "legitimate debates" over Common Core, but mostly it tosses together libertarian bloggers, fundamentalist preachers, nutjobs, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), Tea Party members, the Koch brothers (obligatory disclaimer: David Koch sits on the Board of the Reason Foundation), and anybody else SPLC doesn't like who criticizes Common Core. And, yes, the John Birch Society, probably because the people on the SPLC's mailing list know who that is and find the group scary. It jogs even their memories, though, just in case: "Chief among the Patriot groups is the John Birch Society (JBS)—the ultra-right organization that once called President Dwight D. Eisenhower a communist agent."

36 The left's response to people who have been jerked around by Obamacare has been twofold:

-- Everything's working just fine now, and

-- If you dispute that, you must be a racist.

To judge by how dire the polls look for Democrats, this messaging has not been especially well received.

So if the left now want to double down and employ the identical response message when responding to concerns from parents about Common Core? All right, then.

Those of us on the right should remember not to interrupt our adversaries while they are making a mistake.

These are not the acts of a strong representative group. They are instead the acts of the sniveling coward hiding in the corner.

75 >> an effort driven by the states That's a flat-out lie. Posted by: Andy at May 09, 2014 02:22 PM (2OaXr) Actually, cleverly, it's not. It *is* a gross misrepresentation- but the statement itself is not actually false. Common Core *is* a state-driven effort. The fact that it's a "state-driven effort" in response to requirements and pressure from the Federal Government doesn't make the statement "an effort driven by the states" a lie. No, that's fairly pedantic, but it needs to be said because if our response is "It's a lie!" they're going to be oh-so-reasonable when pointing out "Well I didn't say *why* it was an effort driven by the states..." that any further opposition will just sound more kooky. So call it out for what it is- State-driven in response to Federal requirements and political pressure.

122 "However, it seems like the GOP representatives are doing nothing but letting the Dems act first. Then they either respond tepidly, or get on board, or make no effort to respond."

A lot of this has to do with the GOP being unable to cleanly disassociate itself from these policy disasters.

It was smart of the party to stay well clear of the Obamacare vote. But it proved impossible to wash away the lingering smell once Democrats pointed out the long history of prominent Republicans (Romney, Gingrich, et cetera) advocating Obamacare-style insurance mandates in the past. And in Romney's case, his having implemented just such a mandate.

Similarly, the GOP has a hard time critiquing the Common Core fiasco, because CC is essentially an outgrowth of earlier policies such as Bush's No Child Left Behind, which Republicans had strongly argued for.

The way to stop getting hoist on one's own petard is to stop fooling around with petards in the first place. Every time the Republican Party pushes for "well managed" Big Government solutions, be they Romneycare or NCLB, they're lining themselves up for eventual trouble down the road. Knock it off with that shit.

Posted by: torquewrench at May 09, 2014 10:38 AM (noWW6)

123 Here's the most insidious thing about Common Core: It makes all the testing and accountability measures from NCLB moot. Since the curriculum is different, you can no longer compare standardized test scores for a school over time (at least until common core has been implemented for a while, but then we'll probably move on to the next fad). Hence, any talk about shutting down/reforming failing schools or creating teacher accountability has just gone out the window and all that money we spent on NCLB has gone to waste.

Where they went wrong is in allowing the actual curriculum, materials and teaching to be created by individuals in the profession. The same liberal horde that corrupts the education field today and fills kids head with trash.

274 Racism It's anything you want it to be. --- Pretty much. Various articles are calling the Golden State Warriors' firing of coach Mark Jackson "racist", or saying it should at least be discussed in the prism of race. They don't want to address that this is a guy who cheated on his wife with a stripper, gave her a bunch of hush money, got the FBI involved when the money got to be too much, and has been acting erratically all year, with one coach leaving for a head coach position elsewhere after a falling out with him, another coach fired due to taping conversations in suspicion that he was being frozen out of decisions (he was), a third being fired by Jackson only to end up demoted to the D-League instead, and Jackson getting paranoid over players and management speaking with each other. It appears that the guy totally fucking flipped out and yet people are bringing race into the discussion solely because he's black. Nothing to do with all the shit that would have gotten him fired if he were any other race.

276 I can't imagine a more immoral or dishonorable act that could be committed than actively working to keep one's own brethren in a state of perpetual poverty as so many blacks in politics and positions of leadership in their community do.

Of course it happens in the "white" community as well (as if that is even definable), but it just seems more evil and corrupt and cynical in the black community.

But saying that is obviously racist so I condemn myself.

I'm so happy I raised a girl who can think for herself.  Example: She totally adores her AP English teacher.  Only recently did she tell me that this teacher is the advisor for the school's "feminists club."  I asked her what she thought about that and she said, "all that feminism stuff is a joke.  It's mostly angry girls who can't get dates and lesbians.  Girls can do anything they want now, I don't even understand what use there is for feminism."

We had a rollicking discussion about Common Core the other night. Luckily she hasn't been subjected to much of it because they are starting in the earlier grades, though the testing has begun and is much harder than the old state  tests.  I showed her some of the Common Core math stuff that got Louis C.K. so angry, and let her read Diane Ravitch's blog about it, and she was outraged.   She has had great math teachers and loves math.  I am so glad she came up before they ruined math education.

Anyone who has young children now or plans to soon should RUN AWAY from any school that is using Common Core.  It's a pure and simple disaster that is already failing.  But some liberal states are going to cling to it as long as possible.

358 I just came on here to scream and yell and rent my garment about Gallup saying Obama had moved up to 47% and opposition to him moved down to 48%. I see you are already discussing it. WTF? How can this be? What has he done to move up anyone's poll (wait--there's a visual) :-)

Strange mathemtics that even the teachers don't understand. I can multiply 82 times 88 in my head and get the answer 7216,  but that is not the kind of thing you teach in fourth grade.

361 ...advocacy groups associated with the Koch brothers, whose father was a founding Birch member... Mmmm... I love the smell of guilt-by-association in the morning. It smells like ... McCarthyism!

362 Yeah, fuck William F. Buckley. I used to laugh at the Birchers too, because that Yalie "face of the conservative movement" snob said to.

Given events of US governmental policy and the entire pop culture media-entertainment industry becoming a wholly owned societal control machine for one party that maintains the ability to buy votes and perpetual power, I dare anyone to step up and tell me that in broad concept the Birchers were wrong. The Left has completed the "long march through the institutions" that they said they would. Cloward, Piven, and Alinsky announced it, Buckley ignored it.

Buckley killed the messenger, that's for damn sure. But that's OK, the establishment conservatives still sniff the GOP jock and get invited to the right sorts of parties. Never mind the culture war is over and we lost. Never mind the fact that we're ten years at best from shooting at each other in this country, the economy is doomed, and a significant portion of the other side wants every damned one of us dead or in camps.

How is that different from what the Birchers said the end state would be?

And here is where the "Every thing is to be blamed on the Establishment" leads you.  See, the Birchers were "victims" of the Establishment.

Clearly there are those on on the Right who want to have victim and oppressor classes.

364 I remember when Ann Coulter was writing books about how McCarthy was a victim AND a hero.  That was back when the Right was in charge and feeling good about itself.  And now that the Right is out of power and feeling miserable about itself, (plus some of her fans have turned against her do to her Christie support) she's writing books about how the GOP's leadership sucks.  WHAT A COINKYDINK!

By the way, the Left is using McCarthyist tactics by calling everyone racist & sexist & whatever, but that's *different* somehow!  Let's waste our time rehabilitating a group of losers that the Right didn't miss anyway.

365 Interestingly enough, a number of my so-called progressive friends here in San Francisco are vehemently opposed to Common Core. One woman is an education activist and thinks Common Core is one of the worst ideas to hit education ever. So I don't know if this idea that it's a right-wing issue will take hold.
