AoSHQ Podcast: Guest, Maetenloch
— andy

Mætenloch ventures outside the ONT to join Ace, Gabe, Drew and John to talk about the week's events.

Admit it, you've always wanted to know how that "æ" thing is pronounced, and that mystery is unraveled on this episode before getting to the changes at the Washington Post, Wendy Davis's bad week, and the story of Dr. V., whose resume is almost as fraudulent as Abortion Barbie's.

Then there are the Quick Hit and Moron Mailbag segments, which are always informative and entertaining. Submit your questions & comments here: Ask the Blog

I guess Obama was right when he said that Iraq was the wrong war.  I mean since Al Qaeda (Iran) has nearly conquered the country.

And Syria...

Colorado is advertising their obamacare exchange targeting young healthy people with phrases like, "let's make this about healthcare instead of profit."

I wonder if they ever considered the possibility of these young people comparing the plans and discovering that the for profit plans cost less and offer better coverage than the obamacare plans.  Do they worry that these people might connect the dots and start asking themselves what's wrong with this whole socialist agenda bullshit?

The problem with podcasts is that they unfold in real time.  Videos have the same problem.  Sure, if I have enough popcorn and I'm virtually assured of a rollicking good time, I'll watch something in a medium which is just an analog of how things happen in space time.

But mostly I like to read.  You can read fast or slow.  You can skim things to see if they're worth further attention.  You can back up and re-read something that deserves re-reading and the kids won't snark at you for rewinding the movie because you missed the dialog.

And everyone else does the same thing.  Three 'ettes will tell one of the podcasters that he has a pretty voice and everyone else will bring out their open thread or comment on the Huck Stomp.

97 Announcing the possibility of running is the most candidates do at this point in the game; did you not know that? Umm, yeah, I do know that. Still, awfully weak tea: "On Sunday, he said there is about a "50-50" chance he will run. Huckabee also said his final decision would still come from the heart and that Republicans already have “a strong stable of candidates” for 2016." Look, I am a moron, so I am pretty up on wtf is going on in politics. I am not saying I am all that important, but if Huckabee hasn't reached me with the message that he is running, he is not running very damned hard. But, actually, he is not running. Which is what I fucking said. And if you want to counter with another round of "oh but he is thinking about it," okay, you win. I am absolutely, totally wrong to say he isn't running when he isn't, you know, running. Maybe we could just make something up, and say, "Huckabee announced his candidacy today hoping that all women would die horrible deaths." Did you really not know that, or just being contrary?

Odd. Such a basic concept but you need a bunch of words for it.

Languages don't map 1:1, and that's a good thing.  Language-learners want to learn "how do I say that in x?" and translate everything in their minds all the time.  When you progress you use expressions that are natural and appropriate in French, and then when someone asks you how to say that in English you stumble, because it was a French thought and it takes some getting back to.

There's a background track of my mind that translates everything to German.  It amuses me and the front of my mind isn't always that interesting.  I remember hearing an NPR thing on the band "They Might Be Giants".  It stumped me, because I started going through the implications before I could krauticize it.  It is possible that they are giants?  They may be (are allowed to be) giants?  They could quite possible become giants soon?

All valid readings, all would require different translations.

He announced this while Davis and Abbott are going back and forth on bios and wheelchairs (yes - I think this is all Davis and nothing really to do with Abbott). Anyway, he kind of comes off as a somewhat wise elder statesmen in some regards - does he not.

Hey who is in charge of the podcast?  I have a recommendation.

Not knowing you guys personally and not being instantly familiar with your voices, it is really hard to distinguish one person from another.  So I just hear a bunch of random voices chiming in on stuff, and it is sometimes hard to follow.

I would recommend you have 1 designated host (it sounds like that is Gabe), and then only 1 person has the floor at a time other than him.  So this could be something like having each guest on for 15 minutes individually, or it could mean a round table where each guest gets like a  minute to respond to a question (Gabe: "Ace, what do you think about so-and-so...?" Ace: "well.... <talk for a couple minutes with Gabe>").

It is just kind of hard to follow.  Or even better yet, try to reach out to a Talk Radio show producer (I'm sure you guys could find one who reads this blog) and ask about some of the basic rules for producing talk radio shows.

But overall, this is cool and I appreciate what must be hard work to produce these!

Johnny, the first little boy called upon, walked straight to the blackboard & made a single, small dot with a piece of chalk. Puzzled, the teacher asked "what is that?" "It's a period," says Johnny. "Well, I can see that, but what is so exciting about a period?" "Damned if I know," says Johnny. Hauled back to New York from the Mexican border, Meijias-Ramos was expressionless as a judge ordered him held with no bail for allegedly slaughtering his wife, Deisy, and daughters Daniela, 3 and Yoselin, 1, during a jealousy-fueled, five-knife rampage. Mejias-Ramos confessed that he killed the girls — first hugging, kissing and begging forgiveness from each one before putting them back to bed and stabbing them — “because he didn’t have car seats to take them with him,” Brown raged. Mejjias-Ramos told cops he’d made a brief feint at killing himself..... But having failed, he decided to make a run for it, washing his bloody hands with the dead girls’ diaper wipes before showering and hitting the road, Kaszuba said. The illegal immigrant was caught Monday, driving through Texas during a non-stop dash for the border of Mexico, his country of citizenship. Sigh... really?  Have you not paid any attention at all to any of the previous presidential elections?

We CAN'T know with certainty that Huckabee is or is not going to run, regardless of what he says.

Go ahead- ask Christie, Cruz, Ryan, Walker or any other likely potential candidates if they're going to run.

Or how about this- I save your keyboard from the drool and tell you.  They won't admit they're going to run.  Not a single fucking one of them.  Not even when every swinging dick in the country KNOWS they're going to run.

They might imply it, they might say they're "strongly considering" it, but they won't say "Yes, I am going to run in 2016".
