AOSHQDD- Primary Night- North Carolina
— CAC

Welcome back again to the show that never ends, the carousel that oversells we call the primaries.

Tonight, we will focus on the results out of North Carolina.

Follow us along on our glorious, shiny AOSHQDD.COM site for the race to see who takes on Senator Kay Hagan, and right here for the latest on several interesting congressional races (below the fold).

NC-Senate:

Once a winner has been declared, name will go here:
Thom Tillis will win the primary. Question is now 40%...

Hit 40%? YES

NC-2:
Ellmers (inc) 19154--- winner
Roche 13587
94% precincts in

NC-3:
Jones (inc) 20049 <-WINNER
Griffin 17772
88% precincts in

And just for giggles, the OH-8 race. Boehner will cruise, but it will be interesting to see if there's a sizable protest vote.

OH-8:
Boehner 30874 winner
Winteregg 9926
Gurr 2389
Other 1575
57% in

If you've been following along, you might notice through other outlets and twitter that NC is doing something strange counting precincts. Seems like they are screwing up their early vote tabulations and counting the precincts as "reported", but let me give you a big example of how things are screwed up:

Mecklenburg county is the largest in the state. Yet it's showing only 15,000 votes cast if you go through the BOE website. That is atrocious turnout for a primary- far lower than anything seen in previous elections. My hunch is they are just plum screwing up. We are on top of things though, and you can trust our numbers.

Also- sucks to be the AP!- CAC

And for the handy-capers:

In North Carolina, Republicans are watching closely to see if Thom Tillis, the state House speaker a can capture 40% of the vote in Tuesday's GOP Senate primary.

If he does, Tillis will become the party's Senate nominee, and Washington Republicans will breathe a little easier knowing they've dodged a long and expensive runoff battle between Tillis, the consensus frontrunner, and a flame-throwing conservative rival.

He has two serious rivals for the nomination: Greg Brannon, a staunch libertarian tea party activist who wants to put U.S. currency back on the gold standard, and Mark Harris, a prominent Baptist pastor from Charlotte who spearheaded the 2012 passage of a constitutional amendment that strengthened the state's same-sex marriage ban.

36 From Weasel Zippers, Harry Reid on the current situation for Democrats. (Note his one of primary sources for all things is People Magazine, kind of explains more about who he is!) "Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid maintained that his party’s candidates lead “virtually all over the country,” rejecting polls that undermine that claim as compromised by bad methodology. “We’re ahead virtually all over the country,” Reid replied during a Senate briefing when asked about a Pew poll showing that the current political environment is more hostile towards Democrats than in 2010. “I don’t need to run through the states with you, but, we’re doing okay.” Reid said recent polls aren’t reliable because pollsters can’t get in touch with a lot of voters who use cellphones. “I read in, I think it was People magazine — one of my chief reading guides — that about 40 percent of the people no longer have landline phones,” the Nevada Democrat said, before telling a story about asking a pollster how they account for such voters. “You know what they said they do? They mathematically calculate what they think the answers would be if they got through to those people. I’d a lot rather have my method than theirs.”

Republican voters in North CarolinaÂ’s Second District will choose today between incumbent Renee Ellmers and conservative challenger/Tea Party favorite Frank Roche. Ellmers is a favorite of House GOP leader John Boehner, and she has been exposed as a vocal advocate of amnesty

I understand only 0.59% of the vote is in, but the bottom 3 candidates each have *exactly* 45 votes, and the next two candidates each have *exactly* 90 votes, or 2x45.  That seems really fishy.

Apparently this is what Tillis said about Obamacare that got people upset:

"I think thereÂ’s a lot of things we can do if we focus on a systematic approach to eliminating the bad -- and the majority of the stuff that is in Obamacare is bad, because itÂ’s not fiscally sustainable. ItÂ’s a great idea that canÂ’t be paid for -- letÂ’s focus on the net problem versus a policy thatÂ’s creating as many problems as it fixes in terms of health care, and then itÂ’s also creating the most devastating problem of a deficit and debt that we canÂ’t afford."

89 Sorry Nip. I know you've met Tillis. Perhaps know him well. But I just don't trust the GOPe's. Rove? CoC? Boner? Maybe I've spent too much time at the HQ. I hope I'm wrong and you can drag me across the coals in a year or so. He just reeks of Ellmers. We need new blood. Not favorites of the establishment. Simple. Respectfully Golfman

94 Posted by: bestie21 at May 06, 2014 07:55 PM (qifmL) My guess: 1. Juan Williams (and all liberals) are known to make up statistics on the spot to fit their arguments. They think it makes them sound smart and informed. Of course if you ask about their statistic, they resort to you being too slope headed to understand settled science. 2. The percentage of women that I know who've had abortions is probably at or near that estimate. Shocked the hell out of me when I found out about most of them. I guarantee that if you met them, you'd never guess.

153 Hobo tartar? DELICIOUS, what's your recipe? With 50+ years on earth I have known one woman that had an abortion. OK she had two and was on the way to a third when she changed her mind. I'm no James Bond but I'm no 40-year-old virgin either. NO WAY has 1/3 of reproductive age females had an abortion... and as a rural family doc I am in a better position than most to judge. There is a subset of patients that have repeated - as in 5 or even 10 - abortions. THEY account for most of those performed in the US. The rest, one off's. And they are rare here in flyover hobo eating country. Single mothers? Lots and a lot of support and adoptions too. Abortion is not the knee-jerk reaction but a carefully considered option. If I was rich I'd adopt everyone of 'em. Ridiculous I know but... my team doesn't let me go to orphanages on overseas medical trips anymore. Tears me up too much. 153...NO WAY has 1/3 of reproductive age females had an abortion... and as a rural family doc I am in a better position than most to judge.

I would think that a lot of women wouldn't admit it.

Only the leftist ones who are 'proud' of it, would admit to having one.

And women in rural areas could go to a city, and have one without their rural doctor knowing about it.

For example, I know some Catholics who go to another city for confession.

They don't want their local priest to hear them confess.

So...I dunno if that statistic is right or not.

It's something that is hard to know for sure.

The trouble with that strategy is twofold, actually:

1) The Dems can point to their victory and declare that "People support our Agenda!"

2) We get the Gun Control that they've been wanting all along.

200 Breaking: Federal Judge Rudolph Randa had effectively shut down the John Doe investigation into conservative groups in Wisconsin. The ruling is not only a complete vindication of the conservative activists who had been targeted by the probe, it is also a devastating rebuke of the prosecutors' tactics and legal theories. "The judge's discussion quotes the First Amendment in a way that suggests the judge is not certain the defendants (the prosecutors) have ever heard of it," said one observer. Judge Randa's ruling orders the prosecutors to "cease all activities related to the investigation, return all property seized in the investigation from any individual or organization and permanently destroy all copies of information and other materials obtained through the investigation." The ruling comes in a federal civil rights lawsuit brought by activist Eric O'Keefe and the Wisconsin Club for Growth. Randa had earlier dismissed prosecutors' motions to dismiss the case.

Posted by: NCwoof at May 06, 2014 04:58 PM (aUQgu)

231 Look they're not going to pass amnesty while Obama is prez anyway.  Here's why.  Republicans are stupid but they're not that stupid.

As we all know, when it comes to amnesty, Republicans have to serve 2 masters.  They have to serve us, the actual R primary voters who are opposed to it, and they have to serve the chamber of commerce crowd who bankrolls them and who just wants cheap labor.

And they have the ready-made excuse teed up to satisfy both crowds as to why they can't get amnesty passed: because no matter what compromise deal is worked out, Obama will not faithfully enforce the law.  And they'd be right.  So they turn to us and say "we won't pass amnesty because Obama", and they turn to their CoC bankrollers and say "sorry, but we really wish we could pass amnesty, but we don't trust Obama, but hey give us money and we will see what we can do after 2016".

That's why.

So amnesty might happen after 2016.  But it won't happen before then.

253 Illegals are net drains on the economy. They are cheap wages because they are subsidized, so the savings are passed on to the employer at cost to the taxpayer. Who pays for their children's care, for their medical expenses? Amnesty is about attracting new illegals into the country. Every amnesty we have given has increased the number of illegals. That's what they want, incentives to convince more people to work for slave wages on the promise that one day they will be free to suck off the government tit.

It's still within the realm of probability for a candidate to get elected in states such as Virginia in this day and age as an opponent of gay marriage.

However, it's not within the realm of probability when that candidate  goes a couple of long steps past that point and declares homosexuality to be "objectively morally disordered".

286 That's a questionable debate. Different studies show different answers, aka illegals usually work and pay taxes that they can never recoop, like FICA on an illegal SS number and sales taxes. Posted by: Nip Sip at May 06, 2014 09:02 PM (0FSuD) I see your point, but my quick and dirty math doesn't agree with you. Simple version: Let's assume everything in favor of your argument, so I will hike the average wage to $10 (can't have those poor amnestied illegals working for minimum wage). 40 hours would gross around $20,800/ yr. and have about $2328 withheld for Federal taxes (using single, zero). That person, based on income, would qualify for all sorts of government cheese- Obamacare subsidies, food stamps, etc.- all valuing in excess of $2328. Add dependents and/ or a spouse and tax revenue received goes down and entitlement amounts skyrocket, plus Federal school subsidies for new schools, more teachers, ESL classes, lunches, etc. Very quickly you get to the point where this same person pays zero in taxes (due to deductions, credits, etc.) and consumes an enormous amount in public dollars AND still get's a "tax return" check thanks to our current redistribution programs.

In North Carolina, state house Speaker Thom Tillis, who is leading in a crowded field and received the endorsement of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who is pro-legalization, says he opposes amnesty and believes that Congress should secure the border before it even thinks about other chances in our immigration laws.

“We need to seal the border,” Mr. Tillis said in a debate. “We need to be clear that there is no such thing as amnesty. Amnesty has been tired it didn’t work. It created a bigger problem.”

There already IS ONE.

Are you an illegal alien in America? Do you desire a pathway to citizenship?

Return to your home country. Go to the American diplomatic facility nearest you.

Fill out the forms and pay the fees to begin the process of legally immigrating and becoming a U.S. citizen.

This procedure will work everywhere except for Iran, Cuba, or North Korea.

If you are a resident of the second or third of these countries, you're not going to be allowed to leave anyway, so the question is nullified.

Fine, then present evidence that Tillis supports "comprehensive immigration reform", or "pathway to citizenship", or that he was lying in that debate, or whatever.  I have been doing some online searching and I haven't found much, except that he's been endorsed by people like Jeb Bush and Chamber of Commerce.  Fine I understand that THOSE people are in favor of amnesty, but it doesn't NECESSARILY mean that Tillis ALSO supports amnesty.

Precisely so.

That loss will hurt the VA GOP, and the national GOP, for years to come. As the Democrat who now sits in the VA AG's office stomps flat any attempts to, for instance, install voting security.

331 This is just what I could find in 5 minutes. I'm sure there's more.

Tillis bragged over the weekend that the US Chamber of Commerce will soon be endorsing his campaign for US Senate. The Chamber is way out front nationally in pushing for amnesty for illegal aliens.  Tillis was recently endorsed by a NY-based SuperPAC that favors gay marriage and amnesty.  The CEO of Caterpillar — an Illinois resident and a leading national proponent of “comprehensive immigration reform” — has given big to the Tillis campaign through his wife.  Tillis also gave a speech to the NC Farm Bureau that gave the impression he was very much open to the idea of “comprehensive immigration reform.”
http://tinyurl.com/pqlabt8

Thom Tillis is endorsed by the US Chamber of Commerce, which is aggressively pushing DC lawmakers for mass amnesty for illegal immigrants and their employers along with large increases in legal immigration levels beyond the currently historic high level. Tillis aggressively defended illegal immigrants as Speaker of the NC House where he hindered E-Verify legislation that would prevent employers from hiring illegals. Tillis also actively blocked any legislation that would have cracked down on illegal immigration on the state level.

Remember 2007 when Bush and Company decided to try it. Phone lines melted, wallets slammed shut, and the issue magically disappeared. Even if he *does* support amnesty, he may decide his future employment prospects are quite grim if he does in fact vote on that belief. Not saying its a good thing to have another squishy R in the senate, but it's damn sight better than having a guaranteed vote for every left wing piece of shit that comes up for a vote. Not to mention that everyone seems to agree he's solid on guns, taxes, etc, and would hopefully be on our side in things like judgeships and the various scandal investigations.

Guess how that worked out? Precisely as I had warned.

356 Yeah you're probably right. While I'm worried about the direction of this country you'll be glued the election process and doing all you can to get the right people in congress. Come November when the House takes another three seats and the Senate falls into the Republican hands with that whopping 51-49 margin, things will start looking pretty bright. Of course nothing will actually change, we'll still keep spending massive amounts of money we don't have on entitlements, bloated bureaucracy, an asinine energy program and the good lord willing a pile of illegals, but hey Boehner's worthless ass is still there so it's a fucking win.

358 "And it was one of his biggest regrets, as Tip O' Neil pulled a Lucy and the football with him over other items that were promised in that deal that Tip simply lied about."

Although by 1986, Reagan should have realized that O'Neill wasn't negotiating in good faith and couldn't be trusted to follow through on promises.

Case in point: the 1982 TEFRA spending deal.

Reagan agreed to tax hikes. O'Neill agreed to domestic spending cuts. Reagan kept his promise. O'Neill reneged on his.

This is why Chris Matthews refers to that era as "When Politics Worked".

Liberals think that politics which work are politics which allow liberals to cynically roll conservatives in bogus "deals".

Well, especially when the RINO incumbent is the freaking Speaker of the House, and has an endless well of trougher money on tap.

You'll notice that Pelosi, when she was Speaker, never attracted any primary challenges. Despite her living the sort of lavish luxury one-percenter lifestyle which people in her district profess to despise.

Posted by: chemjeff at May 06, 2014 10:00 PM (9GG/0) Combo of things- two of which are because Osamu Tezuka (Think sort of Walt Disney and Stan Lee rolled into one) liked how Walt's creations all had large eyes which made doing emotions in animation much easier and he had a profound impact on the art of comics (manga) in Japan and it also translated to animation as some of his characters were among the earliest to the scene. The hair colors come as it makes it easier for the audience to tell characters apart (especially when they all wear the same uniform). The other stuff like super tall or huge breasts... ... ...everyone has got a fetish. ^^U I am sure there are other reasons but those are the primary ones I've heard bandied about.

Both areas were heavily unionized at one point, and so for Boehner to have been seated in the House continously as a Republican since 1991 is remarkable...and frustrating.

“I am humbled to have such strong support from the people of the 8th Congressional District, and I look forward to continuing to lead the U.S. House in addressing our shared priorities of jobs and the economy. With better solutions I know we can break America free from the Obama Economy’s sluggish growth.”

And then the second man in order of Presidential succession fell to the ground and began to sob uncontrollably.

438 Well for good news there is a runoff in Texas on the 27th and it looks like we will be rid of Dewhurst when it's done.

439 chem, well in fairness Boehner isn't representing his constituents, but hey funds and backing are everything . and peace. back to tetris.

440 424 Yeah it's supposed to be really healthy and I usually hate that, but dang! It's good. Posted by: grammie winger at May 06, 2014 10:28 PM (oMKp3) --I'm totally converted to almond milk as well. Less that 50% of the calories of bovine mile, and no farting. 443 willow I didn't say I was even a huge Boehner fan.  I'm not.  But I don't hate him so much that I loudly proclaim that I'll support his opponent, and then fail to do so when called on it.

Posted by: chemjeff at May 06, 2014 06:33 PM (9GG/0)

444 Boehners district is not just dayton suburbs. It extends pretty far north into other more rural areas and towns. And it is heavily republican. He usually gets about 70% in primaries when he has had a challenger(s) and in the 80s on elections. Winteregg did shit for campaigning the orange skinned deadeyed fuck spammed ads and mailboxes far more than ever before. The campaigning he usually has to do makes wintereggs lackluster efforts look like an all out assault. And with all that extra effort boehner doesn't look like he's going to get the same support as usual.

To be completely fair, cashew butter is probably not rated as "healthy" as almond butter.  Hey, it's not my fault that the fat is where the flavor is!

452 so, I know y'all are too high-minded to care about such things, but TMZ has a eye-popping take-down of V. From the Tillis victory speech:

"I want to go to Washington and clean up Kay Hagan's mess," Tillis told his enthusiastic supporters in Charlotte.

"If we want to change the mess of Obamacare, we have to change our senator," he said. "If we want to end the government's overreach, we have to change our senator."

*cough* BS *cough*

462 The sad part, and this has been the sad part for a while now, is just how ignorant the voting bloc in this country really is. Over and over and over again, the candidate that spends the most money wins. Now, in a day and age where information was harder to find, that would make some sense and be understandable. To a point. But in this world, where you can find anything out about anyone in under 10 minutes? And yet we are still swayed by whose television commercials we saw the most? Or who mailed us the most flyers? That is, whichever candidate has the most money? It's inexcusable. It's just another example that despite how bad things have gotten, they apparently haven't gotten bad enough for the populace to start doing their own homework and paying attention. They still have to be spoon fed everything.

Jenny Beth Martin of Tea Party Patriots Citizens Fund just emailed out defeat (“Tough Night”) in the North Carolina Republican Primary for U.S. Senate.

But a strange situation is developing:

Only 14.37% of ballots have been counted,  even though 90.53% of precincts reporting.

469 464 I will call you out as an embittered loser and possibly a Democratic troll. Get the fuck out of the Republican Party and form your Freedom Party and see how well you can do. 474 This is a huge pet peeve of mine- don't spread shit that is fundamentally untrue about election returns. the 14.37% figure is the TOTAL % OF REGISTERED VOTERS in the state who bothered to show up and cast ballots in the election. They're being counted as we speak- in fact 90% of them have.
