(Tuesday Mar 4)-AOSHQDD- Primary Night in Texas
— CAC

Three contests I've received emails about in one big state: the Republican primary for U.S. Senator, where incumbent Senator John Cornyn had been facing at least the possibility of a runoff race with Rep. Steve Stockman, though that seems very unlikely at thist point; the Republican primary for Lt. Governor, where incumbent David Dewhurst faces the risk of a runoff race; and TX-32, where incumbent representative Pete Sessions faces a potential threat from Tea Party-backed Katrina Pierson. I expect incumbents to win in all three, though I think Dewhurst is the most vulnerable.

Next week, we really kick things off at the Decision Desk with the hotly contested special election to fill Florida's 13th congressional district.

Results will be put in the thread below. Note: stopped tracking at 1015pm EST- all races look resolved (either wins or heading towards runoffs), see below

Posted by: soothsayer The popular notion is wrong, but I think your version is wrong as well. From my memory of what I learned in far too many ancient history classes in college, there was no thumbs up! It went like this: Thumb down: The Emperor does not intervene (i.e. the loser is put to death according to the rules); Thumb sideways: The Emperor grants a pardon to gladiator for his bravery (i.e. life is spared).

92 70 Thumbs down meant put your sword down. Dack Thrombosis http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pollice_verso "Pollice verso or verso pollice is a Latin phrase, meaning "with a turned thumb", that is used in the context of gladiatorial combat. It refers to the hand gesture or thumbs signal used by Ancient Roman crowds to pass judgment on a defeated gladiator. However, the precise type of gesture described by the phrase pollice verso and its meaning are the subject of much scholarly debate. The type of gesture described by the phrase pollice verso is unclear. From historical, archaeological and literary records it is uncertain whether the thumb was turned up, turned down, held horizontally, or concealed inside the hand to indicate positive or negative opinions." In truth, we don't know -- the position of the thumb was never recorded by ancient writers, so all modern explanations (including yours and mine) are guesswork.

141 In truth, we don't know -- the position of the thumb was never recorded by ancient writers, so all modern explanations (including yours and mine) are guesswork. - Here's my guess. The method of killing an honorable but doomed gladiator was to have him kneel with his head bent back exposing the throat. A sword would then stab downward through the throat into the heart, a relatively quick and painless death. My guess is that turning the thumb involved moving the forearm from the elbow with the thumb extended to the throat simulating the merciful sword stroke.

This bill was not paid for, whether in taxes or spending cuts elsewhere to pay for it. That was the primary GOP argument: Surely you can find spending cuts somewhere in the behemoth called the federal government to cover the costs of this bill. On a lesser note: No Republican amendments were allowed to the bill. Senator Burr* had an amendment that would have paid for the bill with spending cuts elsewhere. His proposal would have improved the bill as well. It wasn't allowed. *For those of you who read the VW thread, he owns a Thing. It's always top-down, because the top doesn't work.

209 "Prop 4 early numbers look good (Welfare Drug Test)."

I tend to view such things as being merely possibly useful agitprop.

The radicals in black robes have made it clear they'll slap down all such attempts from the federal level.

But, reminding ordinary voters about just how much power the black-robed federal radicals have arrogated unto themselves, that is still a healthy thing. It will get at least a few of those voters to wondering and then acting.

260 I can think of any number of places in Milwaukee with excellent pizza (and I've had pizza in Chicago, Philly, New York and - yuck - DC, so it's not a question of having nothing to compare it too). Zaffiro's on the East Side, which has been around since the '50's, is my favorite, but Pizza Man and Lisa's also have very good pizza. I'm sort of a purist - I like thin crust pizza with the hallowed trinity of mushrooms, onions and sausage, but if you're in a mood for more creative toppings, Ian's Pizza (which originated in Madison) sells pizza by the (very large) slice and has things like philly cheesesteak pizza and mac and cheese pizza.

Dan Patrick isn't a bad conservative, and might even be a passable Tea Party type, on occasion.  I'd take him over Dewhurst, for sure.

But, he's kind of a Sean Hannity conservative.  A mile wide, but only an inch deep.

He's also more of a socon, than he is anything else.  I've never known him to lead the charge on Second Amendment issues, at all.  He's pretty big into right to life, defense of religion issues, stuff like keeping the pledge and prayer in the schools.  Not that those are bad things, per se, but they're not the issues that are going to make any change to the Shipwreck of State that we're at present, embarked upon.

So, I'll hold my nose and vote for him in a runoff against Dewhurst, if need be.  And I'll always vote for him against any and all Dems.

Tomorrow's headlines will be...........interesting?

Stockman has had funny financial stuff going on in and around his campaigns for many years. He has perpetually been running for offices he knew he was going to lose - got lucky (?) in '94 with the anti-Hillarycare wave, then got thrown out in '96. I thought he had matured this last time (2010) and was going to be a real Congressman, but now he's up to his old antics. I honestly think he lives better as a perpetual losing candidate than as an elected official, so he doesn't really want to win any of these races.

As noted above, Dan Patrick is a mile wide and an inch deep. He's not a master of anything except promoting Dan Patrick, and running the State Senate is a job for detail guys who can twist arms and trade favors. You know, sausage and all that. If he wins, he will not be effective as Lieutenant Governor. But he has pledged to remove the 2/3 rule, so that's not all bad.

Woodfill needed to go. He was strong Socon but not Tea Party. He has not recruited precinct chairs and let the grassroots wither. He was funneling money through pay-to-play mailers to keep his buddies in and keep out people who would challenge his leadership (things like an audit of where the County party money is going). Worst of all, he lost Harris County to the Democrats in the last 3 election cycles and doesn't see how all the above relates to that abysmal performance. The Party is more than Paul Pressler and John Hotze.
