AOSHQDD- San Diego Mayoral Runoff Results
— CAC

ABOVE THE POST UPDATE

After Filthy Filner bounced out, and a primary whittled down the contenders, the race today between Republican Kevin Faulconer and Democrat David Alvarez leaves us with the most exciting West Coast race until Election Day. Live result pie chart below (note there is a 2-3 minute delay on updates on the pie chart sometimes, so you can see the updated chart directly here)

The 2012 election, which saw the disgraced Filner defeating Republican Carl DeMaio 52.5-47.5 featured a Presidential electorate, so it will be interesting to see if the Republicans manage to win out with an off-year race.

The Decision Desk has it's own twitter you can follow for this and all 2014 races here.

Faulconer is a party backed screaming moderate who's been pissing on other "icky" Republicans during his entire campaign.

So if he doesn't make it in, no big whoop.

CAC is probably posting the most recent count 'cause voting here is counted and updated through the day as necessary.

49 I don't see a time stamp or anything... Posted by: artisanal 'ette at February 11, 2014 11:12 PM (IXrOn) At one point this week the race was supposed to have been a statistical dead heat. We likely wont have a usable result for at least the next couple of hours, given it ain't likely either side is going to easily concede.

Posted by: Bill H at February 11, 2014 07:17 PM (3sZO1)

50 Heads up guys- the 1.6% figure is misleading. 1/3 to 1/2 of all ballots cast are absentee/early votes. These ARE those votes so far, so don't be shocked if the total # of votes is only a little over double what is already up. At a minimum this is likely 40% of the vote. At max, a little over 50%.

Posted by: CAC at February 11, 2014 07:20 PM (4YgG5)

51 For my money, San Diego has one of the most comfortable climates you will find anywhere in the world. Just gorgeous.

That said, I know a pretty large number of former WESTPAC Navy types who had been homeported there, most of whom referred to it unfondly as "Dago", and couldn't wait to get out of there when they left the service. There were a bunch of gripes. Some justified, some flimsy.

At the moment, winning a mayoral election in San Diego is like being elected captain of RMS _Titanic_ about half an hour after the iceberg ripped open the side. Every large municipality in Commiefornia is the same. Massively overcommitted financially thanks to public union pensions and an open-door welfare state flooding with Third World immigrants.

The only way out is a combination of politically toxic tax hikes and service cuts, both of agonizingly large dimensions, neither one avoidable. That is IF renegotiation of union contracts for existing pre-retiree workers succeed. Which is by no means guaranteed. They will fight for every penny of excessive unearned benefits.

If renegotiations fail, it's next stop bankruptcy. Just as Vallejo and San Bernardino have learned.

Posted by: CAC at February 11, 2014 11:20 PM (4YgG5) Early absentees in California have typically been GOP heavy in regular elections. If this were a regular election, I'd be worried, since in recent times a 15% to 20% lead in early absentees has been associated with an even split after all the votes have been counted. This being a special election, howeverÂ…

Nice graphic, CAC...it's cool the way you can mouse over it and get the vote count and percentage.

So now there's an R in place of filthy Filner?

Let's hope this is an omen of what the rest of the year may bring.

BTW, if the Dem had won, the MSM would be hailing it as a "harbinger" for the midterm; but since it was an evil Republican we get *crickets*.
