AOSHQDD: A Quick Look at the Gubernatorial Contests.
— CAC

In gigantic, margin-shredding map style.

GovernorsRaces2014.bmp

It's been a while since we've had any discussion on the upcoming gubernatorial races. Democrats have their sights set on Pennsylvania, where Corbett has been floundering, along with Maine and Florida, whose respective GOP governors face underwater approval ratings. Republicans, on the other hand, are targeting states they missed by a few thousand votes: Illinois and Connecticut; and a few others that evaded them in 2010 but changing political environments within each have brought them within range: Arkansas and Colorado.

So we all understand what I mean by Safe, Likely, Moderate, Lean, and Tossup, here's a brief explanation that will hold true in election posts here as well as my work over at The Federalist:
Safe: barring extraordinary circumstances, the indicated party will hold this seat by a comfortable margin.
Likely: while it is highly likely the indicated party will hold this seat, and by a margin greater than ten points, it isn't out of the realm of possibility things can change.
Moderate: the indicated party is favored to carry the seat by a margin less than ten points, and if conditions run against their favor, this seat can become competitive.
Lean: a competitive race which still has a favorite to be decided by less than five points.
Toss-up: your guess is as good as mine.

So, which races are on your mind? Which Republican and Democrat-held governors' mansions do you feel are more vulnerable (or safer) than I have pegged?

Update: a lot of you Pennsylvanians have pretty strong opinions about Tom Corbett, so here's a quick poll for ya.

PA Governor Tom Corbett has atrocious numbers, and has had them for some time now. With the election just months out, should Gov. Corbett Step Aside?

7 Pennsylvania mystifies me.

Penn State crippled Corbett, and everyone knows he's sunk in November.  And yet, where's the high-profile primary challenger in the GOP?  We saved Nevada in 2010 by primarying a weak governor with a stronger candidate.  Pennsylvania's just as bluish purple, and crickets from the GOP.

And don't say, "There's no GOPer high-profile enough to do it."  A run like this would make the name of a regionally famous politician.  Bucks County state legislators, anyone?

Here in Colorado, dems are getting hurt pretty badly by dem policies, which is good.  The problem is that this state turned from red to blue pretty quickly not just because of left leanings in the major urban areas, but also because of Republican suckitude.  That still persists.  This state could turn red pretty easy again imio, if the R's stop sucking so badly.

30 What's everyone's problem with Tom Corbett? I'm damn glad he's been my Governor and will gladly vote for him again. He's balanced four budgets without raising taxes, he has kept the anti-fracking lunatics at bay, and generally driven Democrats nuts. My kind of Governor! The Dems are going to have a bloodbath primary here, just like they did in the Senate race in 2010 which helped us elect Pat Toomey. The likely winner is Allyson Schwartz, who is a former abortion clinic owner and personality-free. Today Schwartz resigned from her co-chairmanship of Third Way after getting the shit beat out of her by the progs. She's going to have to run hard left to win the primary and I'm sorry, Pennsylvania just is not a hard left state. If that race can't get conservatives fired up, I don't know what will.

The Cali/Mi migration into the front range had a lot to do with the change in party and of course there is always the Peoples Republic of Boulder, or Berkley East as I prefer to call it.

44 In Colorado, Hymenhopper may be burdened by the democrat overreach on guns, not sure how to interpret the effect of the pot legalization though. Maybe. I think the only reason that CO went for Obama this last election was that legalizing pot was on the ballot. All the stoners figured that while they were there voting to make their herb legal, they might as well vote for him while they were at it.
But who would run? I don't see any one on the horizon that could pull the votes. Like I said, Tancredo could split the vote yet again.

He didn't increase taxes, he just increased every fee and then introduced a thousand new fees. Then had the audacity to campaign that he balanced the budget without increasing taxes. And therein lies the problem. That's why several of the northeast counties wanted to secede from the rest of the state because in a state with Colorado's population, they felt that their voices were not being heard in the state house. They get overwhelmed by the FSA in the cities.

That is one of my biggest bones with him.

He signed off on more money for the Unions while cutting money to education and medical programs (not free stuff but things for actual sick people who couldn't pay for care) for the truly needy.

Had lots of money to throw around for his cronies. The people of PA? Not so much. Typical old style pol.

Plus he's said some really bone headed things about people who've lost their jobs. And he managed to bungle the investigation of Gosnell.

He's a waste of space and he knows he's screwed. He's trying to make amends now but he's about 2 years too late.

That may be so, but I think the reason why a lot of Coloradans vote left is because Republicans can't get their messaging shit together.  They say they're for liberty and the constitution, but then they tell people what they should and shouldn't do.  They can't compete with the dem message of  'not only can you do it, but we're going to give it to you for free.'

People hear all the time about how it's impossible to legislate morality, but both sides try to and the dems succeed.  Republicans should let society fight societies battles and stick to convincing people that government is not the answer to everything.

66 As someone who actually lives in Ohio, I can attest that Kasich is far weaker than he appears.  Not because of moderates, mind you, but because he has royally PISSED OFF his base, most by pissing all over it.  Tea Party, Conservative, Libertarian, and even moderate-but-not-too-moderate types absolutely hate the man.  He has taxed fracking, failed to even attempt education reform, lost a fight with the unions do to laziness and trying to cram everything into one bill, and to top it all off expanded Medicare by going whole hog with Obamacare.  Yes, he is one of the few Republicans in the entire country who decided to go along with Obamacare.  He is worse than the people we send to Washington D.C.

Short Version:  A lot of Republicans who go to vote this year will not vote for Kasich.  As such the polls probably make him seem stronger than he really is.  Ohio should probably be considered a toss up.

If he'd privatized the liquor stores like he said, then I'd have no problem about his cuts but what he did was cave to the union then take the money he had to find to pay them off from education and some health programs.

See how that works? Unions get more money and sucking on the State tit while those who need some help get screwed.

His malapropisms and totally stupid stuff he said early in office is also another thing.

The Gosnell thing was botched and they tried to cover it up. It came out no thanks to Corbett's cronies in place at the Health Dept.

I think CO is going to be interesting this year. The Dem's ran the table last year with gun control, instate tuition for illegals, same sex civil unions, etc. The Speaker of the House was just elected last year and was a Bloomberg apparatchik. I don't think they expected the blowback they got, and Evie Hudak "resigned" rather than face a recall because that would have flipped the Senate to R control. 81 I know there is no way to quantify general observations.  Which is why you can't really adjust any polls.  I'm just saying he is probably not as strong as the polls make him out to be in a general sense.  Taking one or two percentage points off would be stupid because we have nothing to base it on.  But just because a phenomenon cannot be reliably quantified does not mean it is not there.

I mean, who are the Dems gonna put up? Crist? There's plenty to hit Scott on from the right, but Crist sure as hell can't do it. Scott infuriated his base by caving to OCare, but that took away a sledgehammer that a Dem candidate would try to hit him with. Unemployment isn't great, but it's moved in the right direction. It's better than a lot of places.

88 And if the Ohio Democrat Party runs on Kasich's Obamacare support, we might actually see his polls crater in a few months.  His best chance is if Portune and Fitzgerald get into a nasty primary fight, and are unable to really campaign much for the general.  A lot of Kasich's fortunes depend on who the Democrat nominee is, what he campaigns on, and how well he campaigns.  But Kasich has done himself no favors.

Listen,  I was joking.  So you will know, I am against abortion, but I don't think it should be illegal, per se, except when it is butchery like late term abortion.  If a woman wants an abortion and she can find a doctor to do it, then that should be up to her and her conscience.  But her abortion should not be paid for by tax dollars.

As far as the gay argument goes, from what I've seen on this blog is that most people here are pretty accepting of gays.  I think what may people have trouble dealing with is the 'in your fucking face' nature of the gay movement.  By in large, most people don't care who's screwing who AND they don't care to know.

97 Tancredo only ran third-party in 2010 after deciding both of the two GOP primary contenders sucked, and neither could win against Hickenlooper. He called on them to drop out, and they refused.

Now, you could say Tancredo was just being self-serving, and I can understand how it may seem that way, but the fact is both of those Republicans did indeed suck. McInnis lost the primary at the last minute due to a plagiarism scandal, and I forget what scandal plagued Maes in the general, but in the end he could barely manage getting 10% of the vote.

It doesn't seem likely that this will happen again, but given how sorry the state GOP is, we could indeed end up with a horrible candidate again.

If the state GOP were actually colluding with the Democrats to keep this state blue, I can't think of one thing they'd do differently as a party.

You're correct and that's why I want Tancredo to stay out of the race. He always manages to pull that small percentage of voters that could make a difference. You are always going to have a percentage of the voters that are one issue types, whether it be immigration, gay marriage, legalizing pot or any number of issues. They will vote for the person that most strongly mirrors their particular prejudices without thinking about what effect their vote will have on the overall outcome. See Perot, Ross.

Posted by: LFW - Honorary Pointy Eared Vulcan at January 24, 2014 05:13 PM (SudzO)

127 If Tancredo gets the nomination for CO, the only way for him to win is to gin up the white vote. I'm talking dark-enlightenment: flyers on the campuses, explaining why diversity hurts. Flyers on construction-sites, explaining what illegal immigration does.

Feminists: put the differential rape statistics out there.

Gun owners: well, they know.

The Atwater strategy.

A few years ago in MA there's a well organized movement for a referendum question to lower the sales tax or income tax, I forget which.

Anyway it was met with stiff opposition from the govt hacks and unions. They ran a huge ad campaign saying the tax cut would be "Reckless" and "Risky."

Get this, they were successful. Those two stupid words resonated with the Dumb People of MA. The voters of MA REJECTED their chance to keep more of their own money.

So, that's who we're dealing with.

170 The U.S. Navy is about to cut in half the number of aircraft carriers it keeps ready for combat. Starting in 2015, just two American flattops will be on station at any given time, down from three or four today. The change is spelled out in a presentation by Adm. Bill Gortney, head of Fleet Forces Command. The U.S. Naval InstituteÂ’s published the presentation on its Website on Jan. 24.

256 Thanks for the info, I'll keep that in mind.  I actually was considering going with the Missouri as it would give me access to more of the state.  As this point the carp have basically taken over, so they aren't hard to find.  Know any fishermen?

Posted by: Captain_Cookie at January 24, 2014 05:47 PM (qJPSp)

257 Double heh. My UPS guy hates me. A few months back, I got a couple thousand rounds of Mosin food. In the wooden crates. Posted by: DC in Towson at January 24, 2014 09:45 PM (eQJwb) *whistles* Got me beat. I went with 250rds of 00Buck. My FiL gave some from his personal stash for Christmas. So I've got 300-350rds each of 12ga and S&W .40. No more buying for me though. I'm pretty sure I found my next gun today. And of course it's not chambered in .40, so that's more ammo that I'll need to stock up on.

Well, praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!  Thanks so much for that ray of hope, Cave!  Love that girl.

261 Posted by: Captain_Cookie at January 24, 2014 09:47 PM (qJPSp) I do off and on fishing here. Just river fishing most recently, sunfish mostly, I've done trout in the past at Montauk.

262 That's right, I forgot that an Ette got ahold of D'Oh Boy. Still, would be nice to hear from her.

263 So the wife (notice how I didn't say MY wife) asked tonight if I am worried about my liver failing. Knowing where this was going, I said, "No, I really am not." She said, "Don't you think you might be becoming an alcoholic?" I said, "Becoming?" "I don't ever drink before 5 PM, and I've been drinking like this since 1972." I don't know what the hell she thinks has changed, but I sure as hell can't afford a divorce. Sheesh.

Posted by: Tobacco Road at January 24, 2014 05:51 PM (4Mv1T)

264 up here in NW Missouri, it is very conservative, there is only 1 D state house representative in the entire region and even he is not a screeching moonbat but an old-time moderate D, everyone else is an R and a solid conservative R too, it's good people up in this area of the state

Posted by: chemjeff at January 24, 2014 05:51 PM (9GG/0)

265 That is great news about Ms. D'oh... I've been worried too - even as an outsider.

267 Yeah, I think carp is a resource just waiting to be properly exploited.  Far as I can tell, the only competition (sort of) is some plant they are building in Grafton, Illinois, just to the north of St. Louis.  Maybe going to the Western part of the state is the best option after all.  Lots of room to grow. And you said they were hurting there?

No new calibers here. I'm running out of room, and money. But mostly money. For CCW in .40 look into the Springfield xds. Cougar has the xdm in 9, and it is a really slick shooter.

278 So is where I'm currently at: Toledo, Ohio.  The difference is NW MO probably doesn't feel entitled to businessmen magically appearing and saving the day for union and government incompetence.  Still, I imagine there are a lot of skilled people in the labor market.  I'm mostly looking for someone with experience as a factory foreman or floor manager.

286 well it is sadly true that MO is not yet right-to-work.  the R legislature has put that forth as one of its priorities. but we have a POS D governor, Nixon, who pretty much lives up to his presidential namesake when it comes to sliminess.  if the R legislature can override his certain veto of right-to-work legislation then it is all good.  that might actually happen this session.

I grab .22LR pretty much wherever I find it.  Got 3 .22s and I shoot hell out of them.  Very handy to keep in practice without breaking my budget.

The 7.62 and 30.06 is a problem due to storage issues--I physically can't put any more in stock.

Not to mention the 1911 food.

304 Depending upon the Republican primary, Arizona could be more purplish than red.  There are a lot of candidates on the GOP side whereas the Dems have already lined-up behind their guy.  If the GOP primary gets bloody (think Tea Party vs. Chamber of Commerce) and one of the weaker candidates prevails, it could be a tough fight in the general.

Remember, AZ elected and then re-elected Janet Nepalitano a decade ago...

Plus, current Jan Brewer has been a big disappointment so even if an R gets elected it is no guarantee that the right policies will be pushed.

305 Kitzhaber is a sure thing in Oregon.

Posted by: Woody at January 24, 2014 07:16 PM (07RHD)

306 Washington State is a safe one for Democrats. A Republican will never get elected here and if by some chance there is a close election a couple boxes of ballots will be found in the trunk of a car.

Posted by: wodun at January 24, 2014 07:57 PM (fbqZE)

307 Even though Dems stole the 2010 election for Dayton (with Independence party taking almost 12% of the vote) , he probably won't lose Minnesota in 2014...It has more to do with such uninteresting candidates running as R's...
