Are Conservative Insurgents Winning The Battle Of Ideas Within The GOP? Senator David Vitter Running For Governor In Louisiana. Ezra Klein Leaving The Washington Post.
— DrewM

The NYC/DC snowstorm seems to have killed all the news this morning so here's what's leftover.

1. Dynamic Candidates Can Lead To Dynamic Policy Ideas

The "tea party" vs. "establishment" fight is moving from simply politics to policy.

Sen. Rubio ran against then-Republican Governor, now Democrat-candidate, Charlie Crist. Crist was supported by the National Republican Senatorial Committee. Rubio was supported by then-Sen. Jim DeMint. Sen. Lee defeated then-Republican Senator, now DC-Lobbyist, Bob Bennett. Once again, Sen. Lee didnÂ’t have Washington support, but instead the support of grassroots conservatives like the Club for Growth.

So, in short, the folks talking about inspiring ideas are also the ones who ran inspiring campaigns and won despite having the deck stacked against them. The folks who avoided inspiring ideas in order to “not be the issue” ran dull campaigns and lost despite a reasonably favorable electoral landscape. There may be a fact pattern here.

...

[NY Times Columnist Ross] Douthat wants to ask the question of how the Republican Party breaks free from its allegedly rejectionist base. HeÂ’s asking the wrong question. The question is whether the Republican Party can break its cozy relationship with WashingtonÂ’s Ruling Class of lobbyists, consultants and defenders of the status quo enough to embrace these bold policies, differentiate itself from the Democrat Party of Big Government, and appeal to the vast majority of Americans who have thrown up their hands in disgust.

Keep the pressure on, don't buy into the "focus on the Democrats only" nonsense.

2. Senator David Vitter Running For Governor Of Louisiana.

Bobby Jindal is term limited so Vitter is going to take a shot at the race next year.

3. Ezra Klein Is Leaving The Washington Post To Start Up His Own Venture.

I'm sure a lot of surprises about starting and running a business under the big government he loves so much will be fun for him.

Reportedly he wanted a $10 million/year budget for 36 staffers staffers to stay at the Post.

As I asked on Twitter, Wherever shall the Washington Post find a new leftwing blogger with no real world experience and a faux veneer of non-partisan expertise?

4. Is the Department of Defense finally waking up to the fact the LCS program is a disaster and it's time for a real frigate in the fleet?

Seems so. And CDRSalamander is going all Richard Sherman to the Navy's Erin Andrews in celebration.

Lotta time and money wasted on something that was pretty obvious to most observers a long, long time ago.

Better late than never I guess.

Now, about the F-35.

84 A budget of 10,000,000 and 36 staffers, hmmm, that does not compute to much of a budget.

Ezra salary 1,000,000 -- or more
36 Staffers salaries of say 100k each to allow for some high and some low salaries -- 3,600,000 for just salaries, once you add in benefits at at 30% fringe rate, we get 4,680,000

So our budget is now at 5,680,000 without buying/leasing any of the following: office space/insurnace/furniture/servers/laptops/tablets/supplies/utilities/etc.

If you want to know why liberals are stupid  about guns  you need to see why they are seemingly  ignorant about  many other things.

Liberals   do  not have the ability to determine cause  and effect.   Combine that with their intentional  out of sight,  out of mind mentality  you get their stupidity.

Gun incidents  are immediate and violent  and publicized.   In  a liberals mind,  that means guns = majority of violence and serve no purpose for good.   Since they don't see the murders committed  in far greater numbers by blunt objects,  this is not on their radar.   Similar  with abortion and homosexuality.    The reason they object  so strongly   to a factual description of what occurs is because this eliminates their self imposed ignorance that they rely on to justify their positions.

108 But when Klein proposed the creation of an independent, explanatory
journalism website — with more than three dozen staffers and a multiyear
budget north of $10 million — the Post said enough is enough. Indeed,
Jeff Bezos, the PostÂ’s new owner...
never even offered an alternative figure...
=============
So much there to unpack.

1) "an independent, explanatory journalism website?" How's that something the market needs? Oh? You and I know exactly what he means--Klein comes from the recesses where people actually believe the MSM is conservative because they are owned by corporations.

2) "an independent, explanatory journalism website?" So, what you're saying--to the owner no less!--is that his newspaper is neither "independent nor explanatory journalism." No fucking wonder your ass is gone.

3) "more than three dozen staffers and a multiyear budget north of $10 million" Is that what it costs to slap your byline on a White House or DNC press release?

4) "Indeed, Jeff Bezos, the PostÂ’s new owner never even offered an alternative figure..." Yeah, funny that. See #2.

And, well...all of those bombers...they shoot ALCMs too.

242 Vic, how many F-4Js, F-8Es, A-6s, A-7s, and A-4s were intercepted by MiG-17s, MiG-19s, and MiG-21s doing Alpha Strikes in RP IV.  Or the USAF launching out of Korat and Tahkli F-4C/Ds, F-105Ds, EB-66s to strike in RP IV.

The success rate for the AIM-7 to hit enemy planes was less than 10%.  Due to repeated man-handling to load the missiles plus restrictive RoE that prevented proper use of the BVR missile.  The AIM-9 Sidewinder was the top killer in all dogfights.  But when an F-4 went Winchester after firing 4 Sparrows and 4 Sidewinders, they had no weapons to defend themselves while still in the middle of a furball.  Meanwhile the F-8E Crusaders, A-4E Skyhawks, and even the A-1 Skyraiders on Yankee and Dixie still had their 20mm cannons to defend themselves with.

Last gun show in Jackson, MS ran across a guy with an Oriskany ballcap.  He missed their fire by three months as he was transferred off before it happened.  And luckily none of his division mates were killed in that fire.  Magnesium flares going off in a locker is a horrible way to lose a ship.  Forrestal, an armed Alpha Strike, and an electrical spark is not much better.

248 You want to know what the worse thing about all of this is? The worse thing is that we've got the winning message, and I don't know why it's so impossible for those political jerks to see it. All it takes is just a little belief in the principles that one claims to believe in, and some balls to go right at things head on. Name an issue. ANY issue, and I'll show you how it's done. I'll take 1 at random and demonstrate. Guns, mentioned above. If you let yourself get bogged down discussing mag size, bendy things that go up, bayonet lugs, any of the rest of that, you've lost. We believe in gun rights because we believe in the right of law abiding citizens to defend themselves. someone asks about guns, drop a fact or two-say, CCW holders have a lower rate of violent crime than cops, and the TELL OUR STORY. "Mr reporter, I support gun rights because of what happened to Mary Jane Rottencrotch of Cooters Notch Tennessee. Mary Jane is 23, weighs 90 lbs when she's wearing an anchor as a necklace, married, 7 months pregnant and the mother of a little boy, Scooter. Scooter's 2, he's got blond hair, blue eyes and he loves dried apricots and his stuffed Panda named Bearey. On May 5, 2013, Mary Jane was coming out of her local Kroger with her hands full of groceries when 3 time loser Dirty Dingus McGee grabbed her by the hair and dragged her into an alley. Dirty Dingus had done time for selling meth, aggravated assault and rape of a 14 year old. Fortunately, Mary Jane has a CCP and managed to get grab the Kel Tec .380 in her purse. Squirming in the terrifying grasp of the criminal McGee, Mary Jane pressed the muzzle of her pistol into the right eye of the career criminal who was intent on raping or murdering her and pulled the trigger twice. McGee went down and stayed down. Because Mary Jane enjoys TRTKABA, she went home that evening, fed Scooter some dried apricots and tucked him into his crib, snug and safe with Bearey the Panda. Why do I support gun rights? Because I believe that people like Mary Jane don't have to be victims of scum like McGee. The bigger question, Mr. Reporter, is why do you think that innocent mothers should be helpless before the vicious attacks of career criminals like McGee? In my world Mary Jane is home, safe, with her new daughter Boo. 7lbs, 10 oz and cuter than a bug's ear. In your world she would be dead, used like a tissue and discarded in a dumpster behind the Cooter's Notch Kroger, and Boo along with her. That's why I support gun rights". Adding "Now go fuck up a rope" is optional, and politically probably not a good idea. Now just how fucking hard was that? Sheesh. If we had someone with the balls to do that, he or she'd walk into the White House, and there's not a single issue you can't do that with. NOT ONE. Instead we get mealymouthed pandering. No wonder we lose.

255 Things I learned about TV after spending the last 4 days on the sofa with a bad back: 1. All daytime TV programming sucks, including FOX News. Except Megyn. Her show doesn't totally suck. 2. AquaTeen Hunger Force is really, really funny when you're zonked on painkillers 3. Flowers in the Attic was freakin' horrible. Total abomination. Not having been a teenaged girl in the 70s I don't know...did the book suck as hard as the TV movie? The young girl from Mad Men was pretty good in it though. 4. Disney Channel and NICK are truly the work of the devil. Who the hell writes this stuff? Incredibly amateurish, and you can tell they try really hard to come up with plausible excuses to get pre-teen and young teen girls into revealing outfits. Also, these shows are shockingly ghey. 5. MSDNC is as bad during the day as it is during every other time. 6. Eventually I gave up and just re-watched old Breaking Bads on DVD. 7. Overheard before The 700 Club on ABC Family: "The views of the following program do not reflect the views of ABC Family." 'Cause religion is not a family value. 8. BUT...there was lesbian kissing on not one but TWO straight shows on "ABC Family." During the daytime. And now I know why I hardly ever watch TV, except when I'm stuck on the sofa with a bad back.

It is also easier on your engine and provides more oomph when accelerating.  It's about 20 cents per gallon more expensive here in Tulsa, but, I don't buy much gas--about 7-10 gallons a week, so it's no biggie.  I paid $3.29 for 89 octane at the Sinclair station I mentioned.  I like supporting the Oklahoma refineries as well.  My guy's brother is the head engineer at the Ardmore Valero refinery.

Meh, if the media were interested in people with actual education in the topics they talk about, there are tons of Masters and PhD grads in various fields who I'm sure would write for WaPo. But they weren't, they were interested in a sophist for their cause. And Klein fit that bill. I suspect he'll get by on a comfortable living from his new venture, but like Andrew Sullivan, he'll drift into obscurity and light night CNN panel hosting.

A squad of Marines were cross training with Army airborne and were briefed  on  a  scheduled  jump from a plane  that morning.    Afterwards,  a  couple of airborne guys came across one of the Marines in the bathroom who appeared nervous as hell and sweating profusely.

The airborne guy said,  "  I thought you Marines were tough and here you are scared of jumping out of a little old plane.   Don't worry,  I guarantee you that your parachute will open and you'll land safely"

The Marine, with a look of relief  on  his face said " We get to use parachutes?"

What I recall, working from memory, is that overall the loss rate from any enemy aircraft was VERY small.  We didn't lose any for the two cruises I made while the war was still on.

Also with regard to "tracking" surface ships I will repeat the story I have posted here many times.  After the war was over (for us) we decided to fk with the Russians on the way over.

We decided to not let them find us with their traditional Bear Bomber overflight.  They knew where we left from and when and they knew where we were going.  We went a different route, we outran the spy ships they had posted outside of Pearl and crossed the Pacific w/o them finding us with 3 different Bear Bomber launches.

As for the Forestall it was simply a bad luck ship or the crew was careless and they could not fix it.  We called it the USS Forest Fire.

283 "Within The GOP?" Conservative "insurgents" win the ballots, the elections. To no avail when the "Leadership" usurp the victories, pervert the newcomers into Washingtonian Land. It isn't as if a massive electoral victory for the Tea Party ever changed a RINO's tune given the evidence of perpetual producers sponsoring comprehensive legislative REFORM packages, one after the other, ALL written to dissolve every semblance of our Constitutional Republic and to disregard the Rightful Responsibilities of each sovereign citizen, the citizenry as a whole, and each Sovereign State within the nation.

288 Mike Lee only beat Bennett by stacking the convention, which made Bennett 3rd in delegates and bumped him from the primary ballot.  If Bennett were on the primary ballot, he would have beaten Lee handily.  Stop pretending otherwise.

Rubio was not a Tea Party candidate - the Speaker of the Florida House is about as establishment as you get at the state level - UNTIL Cornyn blundered with the early endorsement of Crist (who was leading with clear majority support in the early polls).  So while he benefited from Tea Party grassroots action, he didn't come from the movement - as evidenced by his joining with Chuck Schumer for amnesty.

Tea Party candidates are not all diamonds in the rough, either.  Joe Miller blew a sure seat, as did the dalliance with Christine O'Donnell.  Buck, Angle, Maese, Mourdock, and Akin were all awful candidates who blew winnable seats.
