Kerry Issues "Warning" or Something
— Ace I don't really want to rip on Kerry too much for this (and do not mistake my reluctance to criticize him on this for some kind of general approval of his horrible leadership), because the US isn't going to war for the Crimea, and it would be silly to even suggest that we would.
One of the most famous poems in the English language is about a futile and pointless military action in the Crimea ending in gloriously bloody disaster, after all.
No one would believe it, and this would become yet another of Obama's many red lines which must not be crossed which are nevertheless crossed.
But, as Allah says, the Administration is still warning Russia not to cross "the intervention line."
What does that mean? Does the line refer to Russia's intervention, or a line that would trigger our intervention?
Either way, that line has been crossed. With Armored Personnel Carriers.

brb, crossin' an intervention line
Russia has taken over a couple of airports, a sea port, and of course the major Crimean port of Svestapol. They're also blocking telephone hubs and canceling air travel. And they're issuing Russian passports to Russian-speaking Crimeans, something they did when they invaded Georgia, too. I guess the idea is that they make them officially Russian, as some part of their "We're just intervening to defend our native Russian comrades" justification.
In short, it looks like they're taking over Crimea, as expected. The only question now is whether they will be emboldened enough to move on the rest of the Ukraine, or perhaps just part of it (the Russian-speaking half to the east).
Here's another question: Will they formally annex Crimea? Or just make it an unofficial territory?
Here's why that's important: They can claim Crimea is still officially part of Ukraine, so that the Crimean Russian population can still vote in Ukraine's elections, despite being, essentially, now part of Mother Russia.
Think they wouldn't? They'd call it a "compromise" to leave Crimean nominally in the Ukraine, when in fact it would be another move to control Ukraine.

Such a report - to have been prepared last year - would almost certainly have angered Iran and complicated efforts to settle a decade-old dispute over its atomic aspirations, moves which accelerated after pragmatic President Hassan Rouhani took office in August.
According to the sources, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has apparently dropped the idea of a new report, at least for the time being.

Not quite Russian territory, but yeah, the Black Sea Fleet is based there and they will never ever give that up. The host country is falling apart all around them and they are making darn sure that chaos doesn't reach their base.
That said, the Ukrainian foreign ministry has called flying in the soldiers a "violation of Ukrainian airspace" (which seems odd, as the Russkies must fly around there a lot) and the transitional president of Ukraine has called on Putin to "stop the aggression" against Ukraine.
So, fluid situation. I'm not certain that Russia is annexing anything yet.

This is what liberals don't understand. That a strong, capable military and our involvement in world affairs is the ultimate deterrent. Money spent on defense is you best guarantee that you may not have to use those forces in a larger military conflict- or if you do the response will be an overwhelming deterrent for others.

Crimea is an indisputable part of the Ukraine. The events which led to this latest change of government were indeed part of their struggle for freedom.
The answer of course is not war for us. But we undeniably have an interest in seeing the Ukraine succeed in their democratic aspirations.

Define rational. Is murdering nosy and bothersome (and brave) Russian reporters, for example, a rational act? If so, then Putin's very rational. By the same rationale, so was Stalin. So was Mao.
I don't think we can hope anything where Putin is concerned. He's an evil, calculating, murderous thug--you know, the kind of dictator that free countries like ours historically end up fighting because men like Putin typically have vast ambitions. He won't stop until he is stopped.
Can't wait until our weak and feckless President issues another 'intervention line', whatever the hell that is.

Something will be worked out betw. Ukraine and Russia, serious conflict is unlikely. UKR needs the revenue from energy transport, and some of the energy itself, coming from RUS. RUS needs UKR cooperation for exporting that energy. Anything is possible, but economic realities, I think, put fairly narrow parameters on both sides (not to mention on the EU, toothless anyway of course, but in this case directly dependent on the same energy exports for consumption).
I doubt Poland is next, or anyone, really. Putin is not stupid. By nixing any pro-EU or NATO shenanigans in UKR, he has protected his key interest and reaffirmed the power calculus in the region (i.e., on key issues RUS will not be trifled with). There is no need for "next". Poland and Czech Rep. were screwed right out of the gate in Bambi's first term (really one of the more shocking and shameful episodes in modern US foreign policy history, stunning really - but alas just one more jaw-dropping outrage in a torrent that dulls the senses and overwhelms the keyboard ....).
I think RUS gets de facto control of Crimea (or de jure, via referendum, legal basis for which is being laid in the Russian Duma), acquiescence to their plunging their mitts deeper into eastern UKR (was reading last night on the ITAR-TASS feed about the Duma creating streamlined citizenship process for ethnic Russian UKR citizens), and a reaffirmed power arrangement in south central Europe.

No doubt. And this would be the same group who would probably believe in the 1930's and early 40's that Germany's action were not our concern or the Soviets after World War II were simply misunderstood.
It never stops with one country (in fact it's already been more than one for the Russians) and it only gets more dangerous for our future from here.
Obama has put our country in a terrible position and he will most likely be gone by the time it hits the fan. But if past is prologue- it will.

Euro-style welfare state.
Euro-style social mores.
Euro-style energy policy (with $8/gal gasoline).
A Euro-style downsized military that cannot perform expeditionary roles.
And a Euro-style foreign policy which consists of impotently squeaking and beeping via diplomatic communiques whenever someone does something unpleasant.
So far precisely on plan.

Wow. I've been reading about how the Tatars were getting along with the Russkies until of late, so I just assumed they'd always hung around. If you can trust Wiki to report census data, the Tatar population of Crimea has been:
1897: 35.5%
1939: 19.4%
1959: 0.0%
1979: 0.7%
1989: 1.6%
2001: 12.0%
So I guess they're coming back.

Obama could put troops around D.C. airports and say it was an anti terrorist operation and everyone shrug.
Obama could put troops around Congress and start arresting republicans and the news media would call it government reform, and claim it was an investigation into corruption.

There was plenty of corruption in Germany in 1939 too and they conquered most of Europe.
The interesting thing about the sort of corporatism that is now all the rage in the US, Europe, and Russia is that it is effective enough to generate wealth across the society as a whole while especially enriching those with political power.
It is significantly less efficient then capitalism at generating wealth, but the governing classes of the states in question have figured out how to stop the food riots and such that would have plagued them if they had gone full communist...

Ah. The old "blame the computer" ploy.

Well, they're not wearing insignia, see, so we can't *prove* their Russian.

Yes, by all means let's give Putin every benefit of the doubt, put ourselves in his shoes, and empathize with the terribly unfair plight of the Sudeten Germans, er, sorry, Ukrainian Russians. Putin seems like a perfectly reasonable fellow to me. I have seen into the depths of his soul, you know, and the experience was telling (and somehow eerily reminiscent of biting into a raw avocado, but no matter).
I think perhaps we shall have a conference of some sort, Putin and I, after which we shall sign an agreement of some sort, one suitable for waving in the air and making grand declarations. It shall all go swimmingly, I think.

Of course they were then well out of position, cut off from the main forces, and surrounded by the enemy, so it was a boneheaded move, but it wasn't exactly a disaster.
