As I Was Saying: Fear-Mongering Progressives Review the RIP Round and Gush: "96 Grains of Pure, Unadulterated Hate. A Desire to Inflict Suffering. Period."
— Ace

"This is scary!!!"

Okay I added the exclamation points but they do that when they take a reviewer's quote for a movie poster.

A site called "PolicyMic" went to an unbiased source to get his take on the weapon. A guy named Richard Rowe who wrote a very objective, neutral book called Against the Tea Party. (No, seriously.)

Rowe gives the RIP the rave-fear reviews that the ammo maker was counting on:

A New Bullet Has Been Invented. This is What it Looks Like.

As I mentioned: Focusing on how "scary looking" the bullet looks. This piece just came up 28 minutes ago.

Didn't take that long, huh?

He claims the new bullet is similar enough to another type of round (which this article calls a "tool of war," rather than a round) banned by the Hague Conventions called a flechette round.

Think a shotgun, but nastier. Traditional bullets do most of their damage by transferring kinetic energy in an expanding "bubble" around the projectile. Flechette rounds are different. They're full of nasty, tiny spikes which pierce the insides of the target (creating holes through skin, muscle, lungs, heart, vital organs, etc.) and pass through the other side.

Rowe notes: "The flechette-like needles that the R.I.P. round produces wonÂ’t even offer its victims that cold mercy, though. Because theyÂ’re copper."

He then quotes a surgeon talking about flechette rounds (and assuming you will take this quote about flechette "tools of war" to apply to the new RIP "tool of war"):

"Don't kid yourself. It is not a job for a surgeon but for graves registration."

I could see that going right on the movie-poster ad for the bullet.

...

Or as Rowe, who in the past attempted to modify his own ammunition to achieve a similar effect, calls it: "96 grains of pure, unadulterated hate. A desire to inflict suffering. Period."

Other tools of war are made for the love.

By the way, here's an actual picture of the rounds.

6 Idiots.  FMJ rounds are 'legal' on the grounds they are more humane when it comes to warfare.

So we have the SS109 5.56mm 62gr round for the M-16/M-4 series that under the right circumstances will turn flesh into jelly as it delivers its kinetic or hydrostatic shock through the human body.

Some humane round.

41 I don't even know what to say to this... "Oh, noes! This round is designed to hurt people!!!!" Of course, it all comes back to the same Liberal premise- we're all homicidal maniacs just waiting to be unleashed. "Oh, you can't have legal guns- people will kill each other!" "Oh, you can't have legal concealed carry- people will kill each other!" "Oh, you can't have high-performance ammunition- people will kill each other!" And *this* doesn't even look all that "high performance." Just at a glance, I have some questions about its accuracy- it doesn't look like it has the weight or shape to really take advantage of the rotational forces that give modern weapons their accuracy. Though I could be wrong there.

200 191 CSI had an episode where the killer used a "meat bullet". He froze a meat projectile and then loaded it into a cartridge. Used it to kill someone (remember, suspension of disbelief), and then the cops couldn't figure out how the victim died because the meat bullet thawed. Posted by: EC at January 27, 2014 04:57 PM (GQ8sn) Serial Mom bludgeoned someone to death with a frozen leg of lamb, then cooked it up and served it later.

203 That was my initial impression, also. 96 grains is actually rather light for what appears to be a 9mm Parabellum (AKA Luger) projectile. I'll stick with my evil 185 grain .45ACP hollowpoint. 230 grains. JHP

210 Checking Tom McKay's article ("This is Scary!!"-link) I notice that he has a graph at the end of his article. The graph is of the average number of rounds [needed to] incapacitate [an attacker?]. There are a few notable things in the graph: 1. The .25ACP is more effective than the 9mm, and roughly as effective as the .40 S%#38;W(a very common police choice) 2. The .32 is as effective as a rifle (a 30.06?), and more effective than all other pistol rounds, except ... 3. ... the .22, which, according to his graph, is only slightly less effective than a shotgun. As per his profile, Tom McKay graduated from New College of Florida with a B.A. in Political Science ... this figures. This article is useful for one's files, for later, when exposing gun-grabbers and their idiocy.

They brought the same level of anatomy and physiology research to that as they did to guns.  Shoot a guy in the leg with a .22LR, hit the femoral artery, and start asking him questions.  Better hurry.

And they are quite capable of making marginal shots into a quick bleedout. It would be a war crime to use them in combat. Yet they look like, well ordinary bullets. No scare factor. No interest.

(from wiki) MythBusters testing bullets that "won't leave evidence"

Ice Bullet (Busted) -- The ice bullet evaporated before it could leave the barrel. This myth was retested in Myths Revisited, and remained busted with slow-frozen ice.

Meat Bullet (Busted) -- The hamburger bullet fragmented on contact with the skin, causing only superficial damage.

Gelatin Bullet (Busted) -- The bullet did not cause fatal injury from the 6.5x52mm Mannlicher-Carcano round, but had better result from a revolver at point-blank range.

When I was in Germany we got to fire their weapons.  Standard German rifle (I forget what it was called) had a 7.62 round.  It had a recoil.

One of my fondest memories was watching nitwits who were used to the M16 firing that thing and smacking themselves in the nose/chin/cheek with the thing.

312 Doesn't seem very aerodynamic. I mean, isn't that big hole in the front going to cause it to, one, slow down drastically and two, flounder around due to the air brake nature of it?

The base of the bullet (inside the case) is solid, so the barrel rifling is still going to impart spin to keep it stable.

As far as slowing it down- probably not at the short ranges it was designed for.

326 My father was in arms and ammunition manufacturing when I was a boy, until he was hounded into bankruptcy by hysterical liberals. During the period of the 1980s when drive by shootings were this new and scary thing, leading to scores of innocent bystanders getting injured and killed, he saw the need for a new projectile that wouldn't ricochet, but would maintain its integrity, unlike frangible bullets. That's when he designed the RAP round, which was marketed to the very inner-city youth whose sideways grip and lack of marksmanship led to so much senseless tragedy. Despite his goal to provide disadvantaged youth with their traditional cultural means of conflict resolution while keeping the innocent safe, his business was ruined over a moment's carelessness by an inattentive copy clerk when the packaging went to print. Never heard of the RAP round? That's because it was shipped under the name you probably have heard of: the R icochet- Averse PE netrator. Yes. My dad invented the RAPE round.

337 55. 71. Lest it's forgotten, Giffords had listened to her entire constituency. At the time she was shot, she was fighting against the uniparty national leadership open borders, and had announced publicly that she'd vote against the Obama sponsored legislation. "Suddenly" she and a Republican US Federal District Court Chief Judge John M. Roll (within the 9th Circuit of Appeals) were shot by a high school student (Laughner) attending an Ayers sponsored curriculum. The judge was killed. He had supported gun rights of ownership, and tempered civilian vigilante property owners from "kidnapping" illegal alien trespassers forcibly held until law enforcement arrived on the ranch. Roslyn O. Silver [labor counsel and EOC attorney] became Chief Judge, and Obama appointed Jennifer Guerin Zipps to fill the AZ district vacancy. Guerin Zipps judged Border Patrol agents guilty with 2 years in prison for forcing drug smugglers to eat pot. And yes, Giffords immediately lost her higher mental faculties, and AZ constituents went years without legal congressional representation. That said, ridiculing victims of head injuries is done by lamebrain asshats as if to look better, but look far worse for the malice.

348 If I found ignorance in the media amusing, I would be amused all day.  This is more of the same.

FWIW A lot of FMJ rifle service rounds are designed to tumble when entering flesh as to enhance damage while remaining compliant with Hague Conventions (http://avalon.law.yale.edu/19th_century/dec99-03.as) .  Combined with relatively high velocity, it can cause a massive shock wave rippling through the wound cavity.  This has been demonstrated throughout the twentieth century.

If you like to see the results of various rifle and handgun ammo fired through barriers, gel, etc.   Try the Box O' Truth website where the guys running it shoot everything and anything including body armor, bulletproof glass, wall material, etc.

The only benefit in coating a bullet with Teflon is that it reduces wear
on the barrel. It emphatically DOES NOT somehow make the projectile
"pierce armor" or whatever.

Back in the day, the ARGUMENTS were that the teflon allowed the bullet to pierce armor- so the LE types and lawyers emphatically pushed for their banning. No one really offered up proof that it did- on that it was MORE LIKELY to- in their arguments. Politicians, being of the not-so-sound mind, then proceeded to ban them.

At the same time, the Talon argument was going on; PHYSICIANS were the ones that got those pushed out. They claimed they were getting cut during surgery and that the cut gloves exposed them to nastiness. Again, no one produced a bloody glove with a slit in it to show proorf.

Hyperbole, thy name is gun control...
